Till date have been very satisfied with everything I've gotten from them. Pretty good!

I came here with the dude, and we ordered 2 pulled BBQ sandwiches, a St. Louis rib plate (Wednesday special) with mac and cheese, corn nuggets, hush puppies, and then had banana pudding for dessert. This was not my favorite BBQ. It was very tender, the bun was delicious and I enjoyed the slaw. Still, the pork itself just didn't have enough flavor for me, and I had to keep reapplying house sauce to get it how i wanted it. Boy liked it a lot, but I just wasn't so much of a fan. The ribs were the same - really tender, but not much flavor until you slathered it with the table sauce. Hush puppies were good. The Corn nuggets were something else - creamy, sweet, dessert-like. I'd get those again in a heartbeat. And, I really liked the Mac and Cheese. Boy and I both also really enjoyed the banana pudding. He was so stuffed that he couldn't drive afterward, if that's any indication of how well we cleaned up read more

Byrds is a no fuss no hassle place for good bbq. We had the pulled pork and beef brisket both with immense pork and beef flavor (respectively). The corn nuggets are the reason I chose to visit this middle of nowhere restaurant. Creamed corn fried up to perfection. Not too overpowering or greasy, very solid. The bbq beans were also very delicious. Mac and cheese and potato salad are pretty standard. read more

Byrd's Barbecue - Barbeque Near Me - Durham, North Carolina

Subpar everything. If you are this close, head on over to Johnsons for a better pig plate. Pork is not smoked, fairly B- baked chopped BBQ. Collards were bland and soupy. Staff was nice and nice mix of construction workers and guys in ties. Overall it was fine, but probably my least favorite BBQ joint in Durham County. read more

We were looking for a North Carolina style bbq place on our way from Durham to NJ. Byrd's fit the bill plus it is open on Mondays! The brisket was tender and juicy and a generous portion with sides of baked beans and mac & cheese. They gave us two sauces, one sweet and one vinegar based. The second plate was chicken (fried) and pulled pork. It was a massive order of pulled pork with 2 pieces of chicken. The pulled pork was excellent, not fatty whatsoever. The chicken was meh. The collards were tender and benefitted from a splash of the vinegar based sauce. Unfortunately they gave us a second order of macaroni & cheese instead of coleslaw. Our son had no problem with this! Their hush puppies come with the plates and are awesome. The two plates were more than enough food for us and we could have fed a 4th person. I love the fact that NC bbq isn't over seasoned, over sauced bbq. You can taste the meat, it was yummy. Make sure you check your take out for the appropriate utensils, we were short. Also, there is a great park a mile away with picnic tables. Keep in mind that they do NOT wear masks! We kept ours on the entire time and ate elsewhere. read more

Great North Carolina BBQ!! The staff is always polite and professional! Amazing brisket, turkey and pulled pork!!

Amazing NC BBQ with a very friendly staff. Like a lot of BBQ places, their sides are only okay (at least what I got), but they MORE than make up for it with the quality of their BBQ, which is spot-on. The only downside to this place is that they are not open on the weekend. I really want to try their breakfast, but with work, it's really difficult to get out there in the morning during the week. read more

The food was great here, friendly staff but no table service. There is a dining area but you place your order at counter then food is delivered to your table. I would definitely eat here again. read more

This was my first experience with Byrds BBQ . The BBQ was neither eastern nor western NC style. Eastern NC is vinegar based and western is tomato based. Byrds BBQ had no favor at all. Highly disappointed. I am not from San Francisco, CA. North Carolina born and bred. I know good BBQ. read more

We tried them for the first time my wife got the pulled pork and I got the sliced BBQ I did not enjoy it at all the meat was tasteless and we did not get any kind of sauce I will not be going back read more

The pork barbecue is tender and juicy but lacks any discernible smoke flavor. The collards merely exist; they could benefit immensely from some bacon and a splash of apple cider vinegar, and perhaps some red pepper flakes. However, the Brunswick stew is delicious, thus bumping my rating up to three stars. read more

This place is out-of-the-way! Although it's only about a 10 minute drive east on I-85 from Durham, it really isn't near anything. But, I was glad I made the trip out there because it is the cutest, country-est barbeque place I've visited around the Triangle. The restaurant is really small. You walk through an area with about ten tables to the back, where you order at a register. You can get your BBQ to go or they'll bring it out to the tables if you choose to eat in (while I was there, about half the business was take out and the other half was eat in). The atmosphere is casual, but really friendly, and my food was out before I knew it. They serve the traditional BBQ fare--pulled pork, sliced pork, BBQ chicken, etc.--with the traditional sides--green beans, mac and cheese, etc. In addition, they had a little counter and refrigerated section full of homemade goods to take home. I noticed potato salad and pimento cheese, as well as banana pudding and pound cake slices. You could certainly tell everything was made relatively fresh. I opted for a small pulled pork BBQ plate, which came with hushpuppies and two sides. It was a little over $7 before tax. I wasn't crazy about the BBQ--it was very soft, almost soggy. The flavor was good--delicate and not to smoky, but I couldn't get over the texture. It came plain, but there was a house hot BBQ sauce--tomato and vinegar based on the table that I really enjoyed. It was heavy on the vinegar, but I'm a vinegar-based BBQ sauce fan, so I didn't mind. The hushpuppies were okay too. What really stood out were the sides. The green beans were really good, as was the creamed corn nuggets. Seriously, little fried balls of creamed corn! They were sweet and creamy and fried and just amazing. However, they weren't on the sides menu posted on the wall when I ordered--I knew to ask from other Yelp reviews--so remember to ask if they have any corn as a side (they also had fried corn on the cob). read more

Byrd's is hands down my favorite BBQ place in North Carolina. It blows Allen and Son's out of the water. I worked close to Byrd's for a couple of months and found myself stopping in every other day. Byrd's gets my 5 star rating mainly due to the fact they were consistently awesome. The best chicken fingers I've ever had. Diamond in the rough. The area is rather dicey, so I wouldn't make any trips after dark. read more

Great pulled pork vinegar pepper style and super friendly service! Fun real BBQ place!

So, I'm not a barbecue snob like some of my friends that are native North Carolinians, but I do enjoy barbecue. Byrd's is a barbecue restaurant that hasn't quite gotten their sauce right. It tastes alright, but there is too much vinegar or some other ingredient in it. It comes off a little bitter, but not unbearable or anything. Prices are cheap, and service is quick, but in the motherland of barbecue you can find better options if you look. read more

Amazing place , food is delicious And the service was great too. Fast , quality and great price . I recommend this Byrd's barbecue . read more

First of all it sets the standard for how a true BBQ hole in the wall place should look. Any true good BBQ place should have a bit of sketchyness to it and Byrds has it in spades. I had the pulled pork plate with pinto beans and collards. The pork was very tender and juicy with good flavor even without a sauce. However, I could not detect any smoke flavor at all so I'm guessing they don't smoke their meat. The collards were very good but the pinto beans were unremarkable. I would come back here but all in all this place would not make my top 5 BBQ joints in the Durham Raleigh area. read more

Best breakfast and BBQ on this side of town. The service is fast and the food is always fresh.

Only been down south for 2 years now and I am still discovering all the best places to eat around here. Byrds though has to be one of the top places I have eaten so far. Very fast and friendly service combined with some awesome mild BBQ goes a long way and they have it. I recommend the hot sauce with the BBQ, it's not to hot but packs a ton of flavor and their slaw is a great sweet finish. read more

Blink and you might miss this home town original, BBQ shack settled in "almost" rural East Durham. Byrd's BBQ isn't fancy but you don't go there for the decor or location, you go for some of the best pork bbq in the Triangle. Try it with signature NC vinegar bbq sauce on a bun with creamy cole slaw, add a side of authentic, homemade Brunswick stew, so good we always take a quart to go. Hush puppies are good and something that personally tickles me is they serve BOTH Pepsi and Coca Cola products (NO, Pepsi will not be ok lol) Tiny, country dining area or take out, restrooms for customers only. Now ALL that said those few things I mentioned above are phenomenal but the rest of the menu is really to be honest garbage. Case and point, very recently my husband and I went there for lunch...I got stew, was delicious. However, hubs got a lunch plate, Tuesday was fried catfish..ok, should be banging, right?? Gosh, NO...they bring him this wimpy plate of over fried, clearly frozen fish, instant potatoes and canned collards. Instant? Canned?? FROZEN??? And it was 8 bucks!! None of it seasoned well or tasted just inedible. I hate it to because their BBQ is so good, so go for the pig, leave fish in the sea. read more

REVIEW Byrd's Barbecue 2816 Cheek Rd Durham, NC 27704 Phone: (919) 530-1839 They are open M to F, 6 am to 7 pm, and on Sat 8 am to 3 pm. Also, posted to my website, Http://drdaddycooks.blogspot.com/ In short: Solid, savory, and cheap. $/***1/2 Son Jon and I lunched today (Wednesday) at Byrd's. An online comment mentioned that they offered a ribs or brisket special on Wednesdays. Who could resist? The place is on Cheek Rd., less than a mile east of the Cheek Rd. exit off US-70. On the right, you will see a simple single-story building with plenty of parking surrounding. A sign on top indicates they have been smoking meat since 1959. No pig statue evident anywhere! Just inside the front door you enter a simple cheerful dining room, brightly lit by many windows. C&W plays quietly on the boom box propped above the vinegar assortment and plastic tableware. To order, pass through the dining room to the counter behind and place your order. They offer both sandwiches and plates. Desserts too. We both ordered the rib plate special. Includes two sides and free bottomless ice tea. Take a seat in the dining room (almost empty at 2 pm), and the counterman will deliver your food when ready. Each plate held generous portions of ribs, the sides, and pups. The ribs were fall-off-the-bone tender, meaty, and moist. Lightly dressed with a tangy sauce, tomatoey and slightly sweet with molasses with a mild smoke flavor. The green beans were simply seasoned with salt and pepper and appeared to NOT be slick with fat back. I also ordered "fried corn on the cob". Sounds like a state fair item but turned out to be very tasty with a caramelized color and flavor. Frying rescues frozen corn! The pups were crisp, fresh out of the fryer, and slightly sweetened. The tea was homemade and delicious. Son ordered the ribs too, but had mac and cheese and fries as sides. Said the m&c was "gooey", that is, very good. He pronounced all MOST acceptable. Plates were $7.99, including tea. I took half of it home with me for later. As we left, I ducked in to tell the counterman and the cook how much we enjoyed their food. Both were conspicuously grateful. I promised to put the good news online. Here 'tis. Y'all come. read more

Great service and wonderful food. Michelle always has a smile on her face as she greets you. Food is always fast and delicious. Great breakfast menu that is faster than fast food and tastes a million times better! read more

Byrd's pork BBQ is one of, if not the best in Durham. The Brunswick stew is second to none. If you can make it for breakfast, their chicken biscuit is 5 out of 5. Big, flaky, buttery, lightly battered. Prices are very reasonable for the quality of food. The only downside is that Byrd's is not open on Saturday or Sunday, they only do their catering business on those days. I can see being closed on Sunday, but my wife and I often enjoy a Saturday AM biscuit and would love to have Byrd's as an option more often. read more
