Coming here is a no-brainer if you live in the area! Recently, I ran out of hand soap and was able to concoct a DIY dispenser out of an empty kombucha bottle and shampoo pump. It smells delightful when you walk in and there are many great options whether you're looking for dish soap, hair care, or no-waste dental products. As an avid tea drinker, I also love seeing some options for my beverage of choice! I ultimately went with the rose geranium hand soap since I'm a fan of florals, and it's serving me well so far. Unlike cheap brands that don't fully clean or even name brands full of forever chemicals, BYO's hand soaps clean without stripping your skin of its natural oils. The consistency is comparable to SimpleHuman's gel soap for their automated dispensers. Will plan on returning for a refill when I once again run out! read more

The fact that this place exists is already amazing. I really like their dishwasher pods, laundry pods, and toilet paper. But their teas are good and it's a great place for non plastic stuff I use for camping or my home. Not only that but the people working here are super friendly. Turns out, they have many things I use regularly (essential oils, laundry detergent, hand and body soaps, etc.) I've used the conditioner many times since and it works and smells great! Found this cute shop when I was walking around East Village. The Sales Associate was very friendly and informative. I enjoyed their curated soaps and conditioners and ended up getting a cedar wood and sage shampoo with some argon oil. My hair is loving both during the colder, dryer months! I Purchased a few items from the shop and normally find the representatives to be helpful. I was looking for a dish brush as well as dish soap to be more green and I was offered a suggestion- 72% Garanti soap. I tried using it on my pots and pans and it leaves a nasty film plus the brush I Purchased scratches them ruining my dishware. I reached out to the owner of BYO and she told me that she wouldn't refund or exchange the items because the soap is considered "all purpose". However when I contacted the company directly, they told me that this soap was not meant for dishes but hands and clothes only. I'm giving the shop a poor rating not only because you refuse to work with a customer when you were in the wrong but also because you should know what you're doing/selling. Please do not recommend items and sell them for improper use. It's fraud. I would like to receive a refund for the two items plus the pot that was ruined (onyx-size large). Recently been getting really heavily into living a plastic free lifestyle as many house hold products and self care products contain PFA which are considered forever chemicals that don't go away and disrupt your endocrine system and are carcinogens (cause cancer) . Our world is filled with them there's almost no escaping it ! Even if the product you buy is PFA free or fragrance free they're usually in a plastic bottle :( ! Anyways I'm super into NO fragrance in my body wash, hair , & household products ! This is the place to be if you have already containers you can use to refill it'll be so much cheaper . Love their laundry powder/salts so far has been the best alternative to fragrance free washing & it really works ! Love their non scented body wash/lotions . I splurge a bit and let myself have a bit of a mix with my lotions and put some orange blossom lotion into my lotion & their leave-in conditioner is lightly scented as well . I also got some jojoba & almond oil for both skin & hair ! So far been loving this . I find it cost efficient & love getting out the house to refill ! Please consider going plastic and fragrance free for your health. Cancer & other diseases have only appeared when we started massively using plastics , before they used to only use glass! read more

A store with goals as good as this, cannot recreate the Rodeo Drive scene from "Pretty Woman". As I touched the door handle at three thirty in the afternoon, a head popped out "We are closed today"....(ok, that's fine)...."What are your hours?". (With emphasis expressed for the noncomprehending). "We Are C-l-o-s-e-d today! (realization of what my question was, must have occurred.) "Oh, five thirty." Door is shut in my face. This lets me see their hours, which, in fact, is very lightly scrawled on a plaque as six o'clock. The mission is essential, if perhaps it is only a drop of water in the polluted ocean. The shop girls need to be cognizant of courteous (humane) behavior. I will return but I hope no one else encounters such attitude, because they may not return. read more

I recently decided I want my apartment to smell amazing all day, everyday so I needed some good essential oils! I yelped 'essential oils' and it showed me this place and I'm addicted. Emily was so kind and knowledgeable about all the products and different ways to use them. I wasn't planning on buying loose leaf tea but I've always wanted some (as well as an infuser if you don't already have a teapot with loose leaf option). They have four stores between OC and LA and they're all recycle-friendly. They also have organic soaps, laundry powder, laundry scent crystals, shampoo, conditioner and *some* cooking herbs (cinnamon sticks, turmeric and about five others). All staff members I've worked with (3 of them now) have been extremely nice, helpful and informative. I'm fairly new to the green scene and they are super informative without making me feel dumb. They have refillable things from laundry detergent to hand soap to charcoal sticks for water filtration. If you don't know how to use something, ask and they'll tell ya! Their website is has a lot of items, but often times, they'll have more in store. Check out their IGs for what's in stock and latest news. Sustainable options may not be the most affordable all the time, but that's an issue of society, not BYOLB. They do their best to balance sustainable options for everyone, while also running a small business. That being said, some items may seem more expensive in comparison, but the way you use it, consumes less. Today was my third visit. I waited a while to write my opinion so I can try out their products and give a honest review. I love this place and their products. I've tried their rose water, witch hazel, shaving bar , 3 different shampoos and conditions. The shop keepers are so nice and more importantly helpful. I have a goal of making my bathroom routine greener and BYO is making it so incredibly easy and enjoyable. Going green in your beauty/bathroom routine doesn't mean you'll be a "dirty a hippie". Their products make me feel luxurious. A store clerk suggested I bring travel size containers, so I may try many products because my first visit I was a bit weary but curious. I strongly suggest getting a receipt sent to your phone because the ingredients in your products will be listed under product name which is helpful for future reference. read more

I'm very confused by this store. I went in looking for a small glass bottle that we could use to transport some dish soap for a trip. The only small glass bottles they had out were bottles with droppers for essential oils. I asked if they might have any that don't have the attachments, and was given a very large bottle with a spray nozzle? When I explained I needed to bring dish soap with me, the shop clerk offered to give me a bar(?) of dish soap I could bring. She then gave me a unlabeled, unmarked bar of (scented) hand soap. I asked if I could see the label, since this is something we will also be using for my infant's bottles. She seemed very confused by this request, but eventually handed me a package (of a visibly different soap). When I pointed out that the package said, "for face, body, and hair," she just stared at me blankly. "It's dish soap," she finally said. I looked at her, then pointed (again) at the words that said, "for face, body, and hair." "Yes. Well. We sell it as dish soap." Wtf? I actually did not know what to say, so I just left. I guess this is a better experience if you need essential oils, but I can't say this is a very useful addition to the neighborhood. read more

This shop is amazing! This store has made me realize how much I'm actually paying for PLASTIC or PACKAGING and not the product itself. I found my new favorite sunscreen and conditioner here. I love that they have the refill station. Everything is reasonably priced. I've learned quite a bit from the workers about the products and why I should make the switch. I also really appreciate that they have a recycling area for items that we typically can't recycle like mini toothpaste containers. read more
