Wish there was a store like this I'm every city. Been slowly but surely switching to less plastic. This world is doomed. Called to see if they had the stainless steel safety razor in stock. I wanted to go to this location because I knew that parking wouldn't be an issue. Kelly picked up and answered the phone in the most professional manner. She did get a visual of what I was asking for and was kind and helpful enough to tell me about the other styles. Told Kelly I would be there very soon and was greeted by Kelly. They allowed only two people in at a time because of social distancing. I got to see touch and feel the difference between the butterfly and 3pc razor. It's a lot different seeing things in person than just ordering online. I ended up picking up the butterfly with the longer handle. They had tons of reusable items and refills for sale. I love this store. This is a store that is dedicated to alternatives to the usage of plastic. Its located at the same place as the marine research center. They encourage everyone to bring your own bottles and bags to prolong the usage of them so that it doesn't end up in a landfill or worse, the ocean. They even encourage people to bring plastic bottles to re-use them again. But if you didnt bring your own bottle they sell some re-usable bottles as well. They have refill stations for shampoo, conditioner, body-wash, soaps detergents and tea (organic). All are sold by the ounce They sell bar soaps as well along with deodorant and lip balm with biodegradable packaging. They sell bags with can be used for obtaining food at farmers market or grabbing rice at the bulk bins (I need to buy one). They even have bamboo straws and brushes. The price range is very broad so there is something for everyone. To use the refill station: get your bottle, go to a scale, and measure the bottle. this is your Tare. Then fill your bottle with the desired amount. I went for the citrus shampoo. Afterwards, you measure it again, subtract it from the intial weight and then the result is the amount you have to pay. The store is very clean and the cashier was very helpful and helped me with filling my shampoo bottle. I also bought a soap bag - which holds soap bars and also acts as a loofah. Absolutely in love and obsessed with BYO Long Beach! From the people working there I've met to everything this business is about! I found out about them after coming across their booth at the Long Beach farmer's market on sundays. My first purchase was bamboo utensils, which I love and get compliments for at work! My second visit at their store, I picked up more bamboo utensils, a metal straw, and a utensil pouch to add to my white elephant gift exchange this Christmas! Great little shop in the middle of the Ballast Point plaza where you can bring in your own containers and refill on stuff like shampoo, lotion, detergents, liquid soaps, etc. They have a good selection of plastic free home stuff like sponges, brushes, dental floss, straws, bags, razors, etc. They don't make the refill stuff, but most of it sourced from the west coast. They get new products in all the time, and have cheap stuff to more expensive things so you can totally introduce your "normal" friends to zero-waste and plastic free living. Love that BYO has teamed up with a non-profit and that they do workshops! It's also a Terracycle drop off location so you can bring your empty beauty product containers, dental stuff, water filters, and granola bar wrappers to be mailed in and recycled. read more

I'm an Environmental science major and I was so unaware of what we're doing to this planet by consuming so much plastic. We're killing the environment and this store and stores like this can seriously help us consume less. They make great and natural products that are an easy swap, and the soaps, lotions, and shampoos smell absolutely delicious. I have gotten some things here including mason jars and lids to drink out of, a boba straw, a small cutlery set to keep on my purse, the mint grapefruit shampoo and reusable cotton pads. They have so many products that are easy to swap to create a more sustainable community. It's sad I'm just finding out about how much were affecting the environment and I'm so grateful for this store since it can really help us all. read more

I went in to refill essential oils and wasn't offered any transparency... wasn't told the price until I asked after seeing a falsely imputed receipt. Once I told the person who helped me that I was not happy with this receipt and that it was incorrect they didn't make sense as far as the measurements they used and didn't offer any follow up. They only apologized and did nothing about it. I have tried contacting whoever is the owner (information I wasn't offered) and still have not received any solution to this problem. I was looking forward to being more sustainable in helping the environment and this experience has been so disappointing. read more

I went today to buy 2 new pump bottles and the soap to go in them. I bought a glass pump bottle the last time I went and it got knocked off of my sink and shattered all over the bathroom floor. I was told by the person working that I couldn't shop there because I didn't have a mask. This was obviously a personal/business choice because the Sheriff of LA county said they wouldn't be enforcing mask requirements. I don't want to support businesses that require me to wear a mask in order to shop there. But the concept of the store is good and they have decent products. So, 3 stars. read more

Love this shop! I've been going to the farmers market at Alamitos bay for the past year and finally made it in to see the shop. The owner is very knowledgeable about the products and all things zero-waste. Tons of options for any budget, even if it's just free tips on how to make small changes in your daily life. This store should not be in the most tourist place in long beach if there want residents of the community to shop here. All the prices are inflated and I am certain it is due to the location. went here for the self serve refill during covid-19 pandemic. at first I was hesitant to come because I didn't know what was gonna be different since customers aren't allowed inside the stores for health and safety reasons. it was surprisingly easy, and the employees do everything for you. just come with your containers and make sure they're clean and dry and you tell them what you need. you put your container on the scale and they grab it and fill it however much you want. they're still selling containers too if you're looking for something particular. they were also able to answer any questions about products that I had. very great experience! read more

I just went in here this past weekend and it was too fun! I really enjoyed going in here and I already have started recommending this place to my friends and family. We, unfortunately, do not have a bulk/low waste store like this in Orange County that I know of. I used to life in the Camarillo area and would commute to the Refille Shop in Ventura but since coming home had to find a new place to go. They have loose leaf teas, house cleaner refills, shampoos/conditioners/lotions etc. Everything you could think of for hygiene. They have a lot of great cutlery sets, metal and bamboo straws... It is honestly just fun to go in here and if you were looking for a bulk refill store then this is a great option. People here are really nice and they have scales all around the store to weigh your jars or bags before you put the product in. Can't wait to come back! read more

I came here over the weekend with someone who received a fraudulent receipt after purchasing a refill of essential oils and felt the need to point out the privileged/disconnected and profit-driven world view/ culture of this store. After noticing that the receipt in question stated she had purchased 25oz and 50 oz of essential oils (which was clearly fraudulent as her containers were easily 2-4 oz max) I encouraged her to point out the miscalculation to the employee only to receive some excuse about calculations that did not address the core legal and ethical issue of receiving a fraudulent receipt. During our visit the employee was very polite and very kind as well as informative, and I could tell that she did genuinely care about sustainability. I asked if they carried any flossing tools and she informed me they did not but directed me to a company who sells them for $38/each. This was a very apparent sign to me of the completely privileged and disconnected world view and culture of this business as $38 reusable flossing tools are not an investment that a lot of LB residents outside of Naples can afford, especially when there are other sustainable and much more affordable options out there after a quick search online. My indigenous ancestors were basically yelling at me at this point that this place does not align with my core beliefs about sustainability and the importance of making sustainability something that is attainable for lower income and POC communities residing in other neighborhoods around LB. Charging someone $50 for 4 oz of essential oils does not make coming here sustainable. Without the transparency of knowing pricing before buying and disclosing where and how ingredients are sourced does not instill trust in consumers and it's evident to me that the goal of this business is profit and mitigating guilt more than creating sustainable and viable options for ALL consumers. I assure you there are plenty of community-minded, sustainable businesses in LB to support outside of this place and they likely will not supply you with fraudulent receipts or respond to your Yelp review before giving you a call like an accountable and respectable business owner. It's clear where priorities lie for this business, so I highly encourage any conscious consumer to shop elsewhere after this experience. read more

I went here for the first time today, but I will definitely be back! I brought some mason jars and filled them with shampoo and conditioner for color-treated hair. Both were so nice when I tried them; clean, light smell, good lather! I also bought oxygen bleach and laundry detergent at a great bulk price. I look forward to trying other products as mine run low (essential oils, teas, bags, toothpaste, etc). Oh, and the person was so helpful and friendly.
