We have been here to eat several times. The last time we went I was extremely disappointed. We had ordered a gyro Sandwich and a cup of soup and also four other entrees. When it came time to pay the bill they charged us I believe $3 or so for sharing a meal. We were in Rochelle Saturday morning and wanted not-fast-food breakfast. The Butterfly Restaurant was great. The lot was very full when we pulled in and I was afraid there would be a wait for a table, but we didn't have to wait. DH was hungry and ordered the platter with 3 eggs, 3 sausage patties, hash browns, and 3 pancakes. Wow. Everything was very good -- and I got to share the pancakes because that is a lot of food! I ordered Eggs Benedict and it was perfect. They were generous with the hollandaise sauce which suits me just fine. The American fries were delicious -- a very generous serving! My only complaint is their iced tea is either instant or made from concentrate. I should have gotten coffee. We'll go back the next time we're in town. read more

On the road breakfast is the number one meal for me. Wherever I go finding a great local breakfast joint is of paramount importance. I can do breakfast at any hour of the day or night. Rochelle is small town yet a very traveled town out in the parts of central Ill. In a town full of traveling truckers and hard working farmers there is always a local gathering spot to start your day. It's these kind of places that you get the nitty gritty, the local news, and real flavor or a town. Like most places I stumbled upon Butterfly restaurant while on the scout for good filming locations. The job gives me the opportunity to look into places that if you're not a local you might pass by. When walked though the door a bell rang the kind that announces a new customer has entered. A few folks turned and looked and threw up a kindly wave even though They didn't know me from Adam you couldn't tell by the welcome. At the counter a man chatted up with the counter girl about his farm and the seasons crop as she offered to pick up any shifts he might have available for extra money. This small town America. The service was prompt and friendly as a young girl sat me at a booth and left me with a menu. The offerings were various and all seemed good choices but I came for breakfast and in the menu it said 'Breakfast served all day". Words that are music to my ears. The coffee was strong, like farmer strong and tasted like good coffee should. I ordered the Country Breakfast made up of two eggs over easy, (I always add an egg for three), home fries, which is nice chunks of potatoes with green pepper and onion, as opposed to hash brown strings, and covered in sausage gravy homemade sausage patties and rye toast. Sounds simple right? Well, you'd be surprised at how many places can screw up a good breakfast. Thankfully, Butterfly is not one of those places. It was a hearty plate, with excellent cooked eggs and the home fries covered in sausage gravy were excellent. I judge a country breakfast by its sausage gravy and theirs is right on point. The sausage patties are homemade on their line and likely made from fresh pork. It's in the taste. The patties were cooked well and crispy on the outside while tender on the inside. Even the rye toast had a good amount of caraway seeds with that warm, sweet, peppery taste they offer. I am not sure but I would not be surprised if the rye toast is locally made. This was no small breakfast and it was excellent and just what I was on the hunt for. I returned for breakfast several times during my month long stay. I will be back to try their dinners which I am certain and just as awesome. The service is super friendly and the restrooms are really clean and well taken care of. Even the napkins are quality which is a huge indicator for me of the care with which they order supplies. It's no wonder the Butterfly Restaurant is a local meeting place. read more

We were in Rochelle visiting, so we stopped by. The food was delicious, I had the senior special (baked cod) , which included soup, salad, potatoes and a vegetable. This place has some of the tastiest meals! We walked in and due to some server errors we waited quite a while to get served. I went to the host and asked him to please inform our server that we were waiting. She showed up and apologized and from that point everything improved. The drinks were promptly served and our meals came out quickly. The food was well prepared and there was a lot of it! Whoever was cooking in the back had their A-game going. I definitely will return. This was a fantastic little restaurant to stop at on our trip home from Wisconsin Dells. It was only a couple of miles off the Interstate and very easy to find. The pictures on line showed a salad bar as one of the draws, which it doesn't actually have. While we were initially disappointed about that the food and service were so excellent that we didn't miss it at all! It was very family friendly and with a comfortable atmosphere. You can't beat the pricing for the size of the potions either. We were able to feed 4 teen/preteens and two adults for under $75.00 and all left stuffed! I love this restaurant! I have never had a menu item that I didn't like. The staff is so friendly and helpful. Come to think of it they always get the order perfectly and the food is always delicious. I first visited here in 2004. And when I moved here in 2017 I became a frequent customer. I moved back to San Diego for a while and told everyone about the Butterfly Restaurant. I moved back after yet another heartbreak from trying again with my boyfriend. Not too bad of a place to eat, it is your typical all-in-one restaurant. They have Greek, American, Polish cuisines. I choose the traditional patty melt sandwich. Not too bad - the bread was nicely toasted and diced onion oozing out as expected, tasty but not exceptional. Parking was plentiful and pretty crowded during the lunch hours. Typical small town diner-fare. Not bad, but not great. Breakfast is probably their strong suit. Try the 2-2-2. Two eggs your way, your choice of either two pieces of french toast or two pancakes, and your choice of either two pieces of bacon or sausage. It's a really good value and very filling. If you're there for lunch or dinner, you probably can't go wrong with their chicken noodle soup, which is consistently delicious, and/or the salad bar. read more

Went for a late breakfast on a Friday. The restaurant was clean and seemed well staffed for the amount of customers. Ordered the biscuits and gravy special. The gravy was different from what I make but tasty. My scrambled eggs were not dry/over cooked. Food came fast and was warm so it hadn't been sitting under a heat lamp. My only complaint would be I'm not used to asking for a refill on my coffee. That being said I think that was an issue with my waitress not all of them. Overall I would definitely be back for breakfast and would like to try lunch. read more

We stopped here after church on Saturday. We read the reviews and gave it a shot on the word of a fellow pastor. People who expect five star restaurants in small towns need a dose of reality. The food was good. My wife had an open face sandwich. I had the Julienne Salad. We shared coconut cream pie and drank water. The waitress was more than pleasant. Our bill was less than $21. Corned beef hash is not from a can and they accommodate changes and special requests as best as they can. Coffee is nothing special but not bad. It's hard to mess up breakfast. Yelpers steered me wrong on this one. Homemade cooking? If your mother reheated frozen dinners for you, maybe. Here's the details on why this isn't nowhere close to a 5 star rating... 1. Walked in and we were by far the youngest people in the place, and I'm 45... 2. The menu had about 30 entree choices, or 20 too many. 3. A lot of it was seafood. It's Illinois, folks. 4. The rolls came in a basket and each one was individually wrapped. I'm guessing that is so they know which one has been touched so they don't reserve it to the next customer. Gross and weird on every level. 5. Daughter's hamburger had no blood in it, and quite obvious it was not only prepackaged but precooked. Just heat and serve. 6. Wife's "homemade" meatloaf was sliced in perfect circles, as if shaped in a can. It didn't taste good, but it looked worse. 7. Everything came with the same brown gravy. So why more than a 1? 1. The prices were very low, but you get what you pay for. 2. You get more food than should be allowed. Meals come with soup, salad, and dessert! 3. The salad bar was the best part of the meal. But it's still not half as good as a Ruby Tuesday salad bar, so don't get your hopes up. 4. Service was friendly, but for some reason the waitress felt comfortable enough to eat off another diner's plate. From my eavesdropping, I think her friend was babysitting the waitress' kid and brought in him to eat. I felt bad for her so still tipped her 20%. We waited for awhile before we got our soups and then we had to ask for our salads, didn't seem to attentive. When we paid and left we realized she hadn't given us our dessert that came with dinner.
