Lord, where to start.... The reviews were mixed at best, but we haven't been here in a while so we figured we'd give it another chance. Walking in and seeing new trim around the windows - okay, good sign. Also seeing a paint can on a table....? Okay, not a good sign. We decided to try this place again because we saw a sizzling steak on their roadside reader board as we drove back into town from the south. The last few times we went here, it was sandwiches only, so maybe the new owners were moving to the next level? Inside, you see a sign Salt 7. The bill reads C.C.S. Golf LLC. The menu - Salt 251. Confused yet? We ordered their Lobster Dip Appetizer. The photo only shows half of it. My wife said "I couldn't find any Lobster in it." Neither could I. It was tasty, but if you say Lobster Dip, shouldn't you find some Lobster in it? From there, we waited. And waited. And waited. And finally, the waitress / bartender who was working the restaurant by herself (while the two owners were doing something else) stopped by and took our drink and entrée orders. For drinks, I ordered a Manhattan, and my wife ordered a Gin Martini. The combination waitress / bartender admitted she had to look that one up. Both drinks were okay, I've had better Manhattans. For entrees, my wife ordered their Grilled Shrimp Scampi and I had their 8 ounce Garlic Sirloin. This took a fair amount of time, around 20 minutes to plate. Both dishes came with a nice, fresh salad, with dressing in a small cup on the side. Given the size of the salad, they needed to provide more dressing. I was scraping the rest of it out of the small plastic serving cup. On to the entrees: Shrimp Scampi That's a pretty regular dish - grilled shrimp sautéed in butter, garlic and white wine and served in that sauce. The grilled shrimp was there with some seasoning, but the rest which makes it Scampi wasn't there. Plus, the fresh vegetables were in a teriyaki sauce, which was sweet and of course didn't blend well with the Shrimp and it's seasoning. It came with a baked potato that my wife said "It must have had a bad spot - a chunk was missing. Whaaaaatttt? Never had that in all the baked potatoes we have had. Not a good first. I was there for the steak, so I ordered their 8 ounce garlic sirloin, medium rare. That should be a warm, red center. I could see the garlic on the sirloin - but the steak was well-done. Gray, hot, chewy (chewy chewy), and I had to use steak sauce to make it palatable. Now two people who we think were the owners come by (they didn't introduce themselves) and ask is everything okay, of course we do what everyone does, we fib - yes, everything's fine. They apparently don't watch Bar Rescue - their combination bartender / waitress could have used some help serving or covering the bar, but nope, she didn't get any help. She didn't complain, she just did her best. I did order their Tuxedo Bomb Dessert, which was actually pretty good. A slice of chocolate cake, covered with chocolate mousse, covered with vanilla mousse, with a chocolate coating drizzled in vanilla icing with some whipped cream. It was the best part of the dinner. Of course, I failed to get a picture of that. Argh. read more

My fiancé and I came to Salt 251 to try out the food for our potential rehearsal dinner. We corresponded with Megan via email in the weeks leading up to dinner, and she was so helpful! When we got there, we were surprised at how big the place was! We sat in a private room with drinks as we spoke about the rehearsal, went over menu ideas, etc. Then, it was time to eat! Unfortunately they were out of the Pretzel Bites, but they offered to put a side of the beer cheese with the White Fish Bites. We also ordered the Truffle Fries (which were some of the BEST we've ever had!!) We both ordered burgers, which were pretty good. I ordered the Pit Master, which was actually a little too spicy for me. However, we traded (my fiancé got the Roadhouse) and it was delish. They've been super accommodating and we can't wait to have our rehearsal dinner here in a few weeks! read more

I ordered the most expensive item they have and it was not only over cooked but it was also full of fat. Yes I know fat is flavor but not to this extreme! I do not recommend this restaurant. read more

We stopped at the 19th hole. We ordered a Cesar & whitefish bites. The Cesar dressing was ok, but in a whole, solid food. If you are stopping in for an app, get the whitefish bites. The bartender, Stephanie was super attentive. We will be back! read more

A friend and I decided to visit this place for dinner. We arrived at around 7 p.m. and there was about 10 people at the bar. A sign said "seat yourself", so we chose a location in the corner, far from the bar. We were the sole table and the bartender was also waiting tables in the dining room. After 15 minutes of waiting to be greeted, she came to our table and sincerely apologized for not noticing us. A couple of minutes longer and we would have walked out. After a couple months of being open, the restaurant still has a very limited menu. We both ordered cheeseburgers, fries and sodas. While we were waiting for our food, the bar crowd was a little bit loud and rowdy, talking about conversations that you wouldn't want your children to hear. After we placed our order, the food came out relatively quickly and was delicious!! My friend said she would definitely come back for the cheeseburger. Just a few tips to the owner: the entrance being in the back is a bit confusing. There needs to be a sign by the sidewalk instead of a note on the door. You never hear any locals talk about Salt 251. Advertising locally and supporting another local business at the same time could help. The tables right next to the bar make it hard to walk around the bar to the dining room, especially if people are standing near the bar. And if you are going to ask people to seat themselves, make sure the bartender is attentive. An old restaurant across the street used to have similar issues and now is permanently closed. The decor and bar area is very nice! Hopefully the above improvements are made and this local business stays in operation for a long time! read more

Not good. Went for Valentine's Day, and the staff was in shambles. I overheard at least 3 orders come out wrong. Our food only had a minor issue, but it was SO OVERPRICED. I paid for a large prime rib, and it was tiny and overcooked. The restaurant is not nice enough to be charging so much, and the waitress clearly did not know the menu. We waited forever for drinks and the food. I only gave another star because the soup was good. I don't think I'll be back. read more

This is our favorite bar and grill in Rochelle. If you had a bad experience previously, please return and give it another chance! Their food and service has improved drastically. This was my first time visiting this establishment and I had high hopes and expectations for the simple fact that our small town needs more restaurants in it. I was greatly disappointed. We went there for the Mother's Day brunch. We made reservations for 6 and upon arrival were seated immediately. There were roughly 10 tables, all set for 8. For our family of 6, I felt the table was enough space but had we been a small family of 3 or 4 the table would've been incredibly overwhelming. The center pieces were extremely tall. So tall I couldn't see my husband sitting across from me. On to the food. It was terrible. The scrambled eggs were cold, the biscuits and gravy tasted awful, the fried chicken was dry, none of the pastries were tasty, there was a "salad" bar but no fruit on it like advertised. The waffle bar was not manned therefore I had to make not one but 4 waffles for my kids and myself (I went to brunch so I didn't have to cook). The cornbeef hash was the only edible thing that I ate, but certainly not worth $15/person. Some of the cooks came out to bring fresh food and they looked dirty and wore jeans and a tshirt. I would've liked to see them wearing some sort of uniform (black pants & a white button down shirt would've worked) The ONLY reason I gave this restaurant 2 stars was because the waitress was extremely friendly. However, she was the only one working so our table had stacks of dirty dishes (not her fault at all! Badly understaffed but she did a heck of a job!!) I would really like to see this place improve because I would love to continue to support our small town businesses. But unfortunately, we won't be returning to eat there again until their reviews are much better. read more

Always a pleasure to go to Salt! After 2-1/2 months of shelter in place we were thrilled to see it opened up again and with patio seating. So calm and serene and the patio is a great place for a few drinks, some Boom Boom Shrimp and a couple of Smash Burgers. The food is great, only surpassed by the prompt and friendly service! Checked this place out over the weekend. I had a "reuben". In my opinion not worth the $10.00 price tag and nothing special. The bread was perfect, the fries were perfect. We visited this restaurant/bar at noon on Saturday. Our 16" sausage, mushroom, onion pizza was tasteless and bland. The ingredients were scarcely seen or tasted. The couples we were with had burgers and said they tasted good. One person had a Reuben sandwich and said it was average at best. The waitress was the only one working that day. We were never checked on after the meal was delivered. No refills were offered at the table due to the waitress returning to tend bar. Three stars were given due to the good burgers. read more

I decided to try this place out regardless of some poor reviews because it's close to my new place. I was very pleased. They were pretty busy for just one bartenders / server but she was friendly and doing her best. We had high hopes....sorry, big let down. First, the waitress was wonderful and the food was obviously not her fault, and my son loved his cheeseburger. Second, what onion rings are worth $9? In Rochelle? So of course, my son wants to try thinking they must be extraordinary. Ugh...the whole bottom of the plate was covered in grease and the rings were saturated. They were like battered and breaded....nope. Last, I was excited about my wedge salad....the "bacon bits" were so stale, I could barely chew them. How hard would it be to throw 2 pieces of bacon on the grill, chop it and toss on top? Go the extra mile and take care of these things, or you'll be added to the long list of restaurants who tried but failed. Unique, fresh and reasonably priced will keep you in business. If it's a shortcut, comes prepare from a package/freezer or is not up to snuff...do not have it on the menu. Don't add things just to extend the menu...add them because you make them amazing...because you add a twist or something special...because it's your chef's best. Don't just try to survive...try to blow our minds. There's still time. If I hear you've revamped your menu, we'll try again. "I wish I'd taken short cuts and used more frozen and packaged ingredients in my recipes" said no chef ever!! GO FOR IT!!! PS: educate on the fryers. You definitely need to alter your temps. This place canceled our event FOUR DAYS BEFORE IT WAS SUPPOSED TO HAPPEN. How can you allow reservations for events if you cannot provide simple and important paperwork? Luckily we found a much better place to hold the event. I suggest never booking an event at this business. read more

This is the worst establishment to plan an event. They cancelled 4 days before our event due to not being able to provide simple paperwork such as a liquor license or insurance. Highly don't recommend ever hosting an event here. read more

Stopped in for lunch with a friend. We both ordered salads and we both thought they were delicious. I had the Cobb salad, the veggies were all fresh, and the chicken was grilled perfectly. My friend ordered a cranberry walnut salad, which she proclaimed was fresh and delicious. My bill was $10 and some change (just ordered water with lemon). WHO SERVES THEIR CUSTOMERS RAW/COLD CHICKEN??? My wife and I went here for lunch and ordered the bone in hot wings and 2 cobb salads. We got through about 3 wings when we realized they were still cold, frozen, and raw!! Seriously? How in the heck can you serve people chicken that isn't cooked thoroughly? & the salads tasted dirty. Definitely did not wash the greens before serving them. We had a waitress that was very attentive and when we told her about our wings, she did take them off of the bill (as if I was going to pay for them anyways!) The manager made his rounds to a table with two older gentlemen next to us and never once bothered to come to us to apologize or offer any sort of explanation. Never, ever will I go back to that place. If they can't ensure that their food is cooked to the proper temp before serving it, I can't trust them with my food. They get 1 star because that's the lowest I can give. But the star goes to the waitress. NOT the restaurant. read more
