A new favorite in Berkeley! The fish was very fresh and melts in your mouth. The menu was creative, and I loved the flavors and the seasoning. We also ordered two rolls, but we did not like them that much. The next time we're here, we will probably stick small plates and nigiri/sashimi. I would recommend making a reservation, as the wait can get pretty long (it's a small restaurant). The servers ended up adding an extra table outside so we can squeeze in.

I have never had sushi that tasted like this before! It seriously blew us away. We celebrated my husband's birthday at Butterfish, I made a reservation online through Yelp and I'm glad I did because the restaurant is very small and quaint. They have 5 tables and bar seating inside and a few tables outside. They have wine, beer, sake, and non alcoholic options. What we ordered: 10 piece nigiri, artic roll, smoked hamachi roll, otoro nigiri, chef's poke inari, butterfish nigiri, and salmon roe nigiri add quail egg. All of the fish was incredible quality. The smoked hamachi roll is just as delicious as it is beautiful. It's seriously a showstopper with the smoked dome reveal. I had never had inari before, it's a tofu pouch with the poke and rice inside. The pouch was soft and a little sweet. I'm glad I gave it a try! The otoro was super buttery and luscious. The artic roll was light and kind of had a floral taste to it. The butterfish nigiri was my favorite bite of the night, I understand why it's their namesake! The fish was lightly torched and had a little sriracha and fresh truffles on top. It was out of this world! For my husband's birthday they gave him a fish ice cream on the house. They played birthday music and had a sparkler. It was really fun and sweet! We can't wait to come back!

This place has become MY FAVORITE SUSHI RESTAURANT IN THE BAY! Omg so delicious, the fish is crazy fresh, and the ambiance is perfect for date night or a nice dinner with friends. Prices are not too bad and service is great. I've never had such good sushi in the bay before...the fish just melts in your mouth. It was so good we ordered another sushi roll afterwards hahaha.

Decided to stop by on our way back to the city from Tahoe and man am I glad we did. This was some of the freshest, best sushi I've EVER had. I'm sad the don't have an SF spot! Super hospitable staff, creative menu, excellent flavor profiles. We started with the cucumber salad which had some purple wakame in it which was stunning a delicious! The butterfish appetizer and salmon / fresh crab rolls all melted in your mouth. Can't wait to go back, they have a few tables outside too if it's a sunny day.

Made a reservations to have Sunday lunch with my cousins. We each got the omakase 7 piece nigiri special and shared some rolls. Two of my favorites were the smoked hamachi roll and escolar roll. Both were smoky and delicious. All the fish here is so fresh! The uni, caviar, and monk fish liver spoon and toro nigiri were my favorites in the omakase. The restaurant is quite small so I recommend making reservations to get seats without waiting. Service is good and prices are reasonable for the quality of food. This is one of my favorite sushi restaurants so highly recommend giving them a try!

Butterfish Sushi is definitely my favorite sushi spot in Berkeley. We came here to celebrate my birthday with a reservation for 6 PM (make sure to make a reservation in advance or else you might have to wait). When we got there, the first thing I noticed was how cute the outside and inside ambiance was. Highly recommend it as a date spot or nice dinner with friends/family. We ordered the: Fresh Oysters (absolutely delicious, loved how fresh they were and the sauce was amazing) Bluefin Tuna Combo (the tuna pieces were extremely high quality and fat) Crab and Salmon Roe Inari (First time trying Inari, it has kind of a sweet flavor, not my preference and probably would get handrolls instead next time) Atlantic Roll (definitely my least favorite and it basically tasted like a California roll with salmon on top, nothing special) Salmon Nigiri (super fatty and delicious!) Overall, besides the Atlantic Roll which I thought wasn't too special, everything else we ordered was delicious. For their service, fish quality, and ambiance, I definitely have to give Butterfish Sushi 5 stars and would love to come back again!

We arrived at opening and was able to get a spot immediately but the restaurant definitely fills up quick! It's very cozy but charming. Fish is very fresh and possibly my new favorite sushi spot. Loved the Inari set. Service was great. This place is a gem but is pricey and will likely have a wait unless you come at odd hours.

I went to a Butterfish sushi restaurant with my sister and it was such an amazing experience The food was absolutely delicious especially the fish. It was incredibly fresh, sweet, and just melted in your mouth The atmosphere was lovely and very relaxing, making it a perfect place to enjoy a meal. The chef was wonderful and paid great attention to every detail, and the service was outstanding from start to finish. Overall, everything was just perfect. Ordered though door dash and still received amazing quality food! Ordered the Shittake mushroom roll which I'm used to just having mushroom and rice in, but this one also has carrot and cucumber inside with avocado and tomato on top. The chef's poke inari, which was my first time having inari, and it was so good I will be seeking this out everywhere I can now! Atlantic roll. Absolutely delicious with the miso aioli. Light and fresh roll. And the escolar roll. Holy decadence. Fried shrimp and I think jalapeno inside, if it's not jalapeño it's Serrano, topped with the escolar, I think chili oil, and black truffles. Escolar is so good and I don't find it in many sushi restaurants. Highly recommend this roll!

We went to Butterfish Sushi on Valentine's Day and arrived right when they opened, so we were able to get seated right away. The restaurant filled up quickly after that and was completely packed. The space is small and super cute, and it reminded me of the cozy restaurants in Japan. We shared the smoked hamachi roll, spicy tuna lover roll, and the bluefin tuna combo that came with sashimi and nigiri. It was very filling for the both of us. Everything tasted incredibly fresh and delicious. I would definitely come back and I highly recommend this place!

The food was delicious. I only got one roll because everything on the menu was incredibly expensive. The service was slow. We waited 45 minutes for a table with no reservation. Only a few parties can be seated at a time. The ambiance is very nice and is good for date night or get together with friends. read more

Wow.... Again....I have lived in Japan and the quality of fish from Chef Wan..... don't order off menu.... Sit at sushi bar if you can... If you cannot... ask to talk to chef Wan...... He will create magic for whatever you want.... The music and decor are so on point ..... But who cares about that .... The sushi matters .... Rolls for beginners ..... nigiri for pros....imatsu..... engawa slightly seared.... Never wasabi.... Only yuzu kosho on the side... you'll thank me... This place is banging!!! Had a lovely bite during their soft opening week. I am a sucker for oysters, and they had a lovely pacific oyster with some tobiko on it. So delicious! The shiro maguro was perfect and buttery, miso good. Atmosphere was good with nice lighting and hip hop music (which we liked). Everyone was very friendly and attentive! This place is incredible. The signature rolls, like the Smoked Hamachi were completely new and interesting experiences, while more traditional rolls were exceptional. The tempura in an our rolls was warm and crispy. The staff and service are also top notch. Can't wait to go back. read more

This is the best sushi I've ever had. Yes. That does include Kirala. It also includes the sushi I have had in Japan during many trips there. Smoked Himachi will blow your mind. The Pacific Roll is flamed and a smoked flavor makes it come up several levels. The Unagi is perfect and the sauce is divine! The service is fantastic, as is the ambience. I'm so grateful something good has opened on University Avenue. We have so few worthy restaurants close to campus. This is one of them. Definitely an adult spot. It's a little pricey, but definitely worth the price difference. This place has made me like sushi more than money so that doesn't seem to be a problem. Additional recommendations include: Fatty tuna nigiri! (What do they put on that?!), Roe Roll, crispy salon skin roll. Also Matcha cheesecake and or ice cream for dessert is pretty yum. I always walk out of there feeling like I just did myself a favor that's going to last a long time. The only downside is that I'm out front right now and they are not open. It's Tuesday. I'll be back as soon as possible. read more

Everything was quite sensational. To give you an idea, we had a friend flying in from overseas to celebrate the holidays and we wanted to take her to an amazing sushi place (because she loves sushi) Therefore, after a fine evening at a bar, we got recommended to Butterfish Sushi. I called and within 5min they had a table ready for us ! We had a fabulous evening, great ambiance. Food was beyond delicious (we got 4 different roles with 2 platters + a bottle of sake). Dan, our waiter, went over and beyond for us to have a phenomenal experience. Therefore, I would recommend that place. Not just recommend it, but hopefully wish that everybody has the same experience as us. Enjoy ! read more

Took my friend here for her birthday dinner and it was so good that I decided to go with my boyfriend literally 5 days later. Seen the reviews about wait times so I made sure to make reservations both times I came here. The sashimi set was so fresh and buttery, and nigiri set was just as good. Also tried the otoro don and it was so good, but filled us up pretty quick with all the rice beneath. Not necessarily a bad thing tho lol The service was great. First visit we had a gentleman seat us and he was nice and made recommendations on which sake to try, even gave me a sample to try before I decided which drink to order. Id come back for sure. A bit overpriced, but this is Berkeley so to be expected. I really enjoyed the food here, from the plating to the taste and texture, everything was delicious. I had a various assortment of nigiri, my fave is the salmon which did not disappoint. Fresh and such a buttery and velvety texture, I could eat this all day. The black cod entree was sooooo good, a little on the sweet side but such a yummy experience. I really enjoyed the rolls I had and thought there was a nice balance of rice to fish, with flavors that complimented instead of overwhelmed. And ohh, the salmon roe was yum, my son would describe this as a taste of ocean in every burst. read more

What an unbelievable experience. This place is phenomenal. We were greeted by Dan who was kind, fun and energetic. He set the mood for the night very well. We sat at the bar and were taken care of by Chef Wan who is easily one of the most talented sushi chefs in the country. He is so friendly and knowledgeable and his passion for his work is so clear. The food was out of this world. I had the winter yuzu roll which was so insanely good. My family and I shared several different kinds of nigiri whose quality was top notch. This is the kind of place that experience sushi lovers need to try because the chefs will not give you anything that they do not think is the best of the best. The restaurant itself had such a nice vibe. The music was fun and lively, the interior was clean and sleek, and the service was fantastic. Mark my words, this place will be famous soon. Berkeley is so lucky to have a sushi place of this quality. Get in now before this place blows up and becomes super famous. read more

I would like to first start off that the service was good, we were offered snacks while choosing from our menu. The environment was small, very little room to move around. The food was very disappointing especially given the price. We ordered the Chirashi and the Rainbow rice dish. The Chirashi had rice that was unevenly mixed with vinegar. And the fish in both did not have the high quality that the other reviews mentioned. However it is possible it was just the items we ordered, but it was 30 dollars for a rainbow don and 40 for Chirashi. read more

What a surprise to find this gem of a sushi place on University! The service was great and the food, exquisite. Find a way to have the yuzu-infused tobiko. So good! The fish was fresh and delicately, thoughtfully arranged. I got the sashimi salad and my kiddo (a huge sushi fan) ordered the Winter Yuzu special. We ordered the Hamachi special- it had king crab instead of rice - seriously THE BEST SUSHI I have ever eaten in my life. He had us order other things but I can't remember their names. This place has simply the best sushi I have ever had! It lives up to its name... the fish is truly buttery and it melts in your mouth, the dynamite roll is truly dynamite, spicy edamame is so good and the pacific roll... we had to order a second round! If you have second thoughts about the crostini, DON'T!! It is so good! I had my doubts but I am a believer now! If I would've known how much of a treat this place was I would've said Why Not. I'm in love.
