I'm on week 3 with TSH now. I went back in week 2 and looked for meatier dishes as recommended and spent a little less for the week, $330. I'm realizing my eyes are bigger than the stomachs I'm feeding as I didn't run out after the first week. They offer so much variety I want to try it all. Most dishes are ok, some are exceptional, and only one so far we haven't been crazy about. I have experiencing some herxing one night, from having their meals multiple times a day, so I have to be careful with my gut for now. This food is medicine, which is great, but can be too much for some people like myself. There was even one meal my husband liked everything we had. The frittata and mushroom soup. I'm glad he's starting to come on board despite not too many solid meat options, as most are ground. read more

Awesome unique spot that I found while on a quest to try all the local ferments in the area. They have a fridge full of large-format bottles of kombucha and water kefir in cool edgy flavors such as nettle as well as more standard flavors like hibiscus. I only had the chance to try one thing and opted for the blood orange cardamom kefir made with molasses and vanilla bean. How cool. I really enjoyed it. Cardamom and blood orange are both easily overdone, but not in this case. Extremely well executed. I think the vanilla bean worked behind the scenes to help mellow everything out. Yum. I downed the bottle and returned it (for a cash refund of the bottle deposit) before moving on to my next fermentation destination. read more

I do the weekly online pickup order - they always well organized and they have plenty of other options in the store. The staff is very friendly and knowledgeable too. The soups and stews are out of this world good. Nutritious, flavorful, and so easy to rotate into daily meals. The paleo crunch is addictive! However, it's pricey! And I understand why -- the quality is excellent, and the rent must be expensive where they're located. Unfortunately, this means that if you're on a tight budget it might be out of range. But if you want to splurge, wouldn't you rather do it on high-quality main dishes instead of junk food and snacks? This is the place to treat your body right! read more

Noah and Vicky have been so nice and helpful during my recent visits. This shop is across the street from my son's Hanwen aftercare program and I'm so sad that Hanwen is moving but I will still go out of my way to return here for the soups, tonics and other excellent, albeit expensive health products that the store offers. You get what you pay for to be sure. I also picked up some items for a housewarming party. I will be attending and was grateful for the input provided by the employees on what would be good gifts to purchase. It is only open starting on Wednesdays so don't try to go on Mondays and Tuesdays as I have before. They give you $1.50 credit for each empty bottle that you return in their parking lot receptacle. Got the Chicken Soup with Wild Rice and Mushrooms (22 oz). It is super tasty and the person who gives you your pickup order is nice. If I want to get credit for the jar they give the soup in I have to wash it and put it in the bins in the parking lot and let them know that I've returned it so they update my tab to discount the $1.50. I just want to say again that the soup is really tasty. The order process is a bit confusing (ordering it online on their website instead of in person), but the food's tastiness makes it worth it. It's so nice to see a new menu in my inbox from Three Stone Hearth this week. It warms my insides up - just as their nourishing broth used to do. Three Stone Hearth has been around for years. Their food is made with superb ingredients and their whole business is woven with intention and integrity. They're a well intentioned business with hard working staff. I haven't ordered from them in awhile - due to cooking more on my own etc, but I would wholeheartedly recommend them to someone looking to heal their gut and looking to nourish their body with nutrient dense ingredients. Three Stone Hearth was actually the nation's first Community Supported Originally inspired by the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) model. Over the years they have evolved into a more conventional model of online ordering and brick & mortar sales. This week they made my very favorite salad, the fattoush, so I bought two jars. It's a mixture of wonderful ingredients, romaine lettuce, French green lentils, sheep feta, cherry tomatoes and sliced cucumbers in a lovely, light sumac and mint vinaigrette. I had one tonight for dinner, along w/ asparagus from last week's BBW run and fruit from Frog Hollow Farm CSA, which has been doing a Thursday drop-off since last summer, so I'm set. Thursday is when I pick up my TSH order, so it works out perfectly. Last week they had coconut macaroons w/ chocolate chips and they have been delicious. I have one a day and have a couple left. They have moved the jar return inside at the front of the store. It's still on the honor system. The sweet people who work there help me out to my car, carrying my stuff. Most are young; some are middle aged. I am well cared for here; everybody knows me. One young man even remembered my fondness for Ukrainian beet borscht, even though he hadn't seen me for more than a year. Amazing! As it happened, I had just had some for lunch. read more

Well, I was quite excied when they opened. I had been reading Sally Fallon's book, Nourishing Traditions, and was excited that there was a spot opening up that would serve food inspired by the very traditions she wrote about. However, when they opened, I was appalled by how expensive it was. They advertised themselves as Trader Joe's type food, made with quality ingredients. Instead, their mantra should have been Trader Joe's type food, for people with money to burn. $10 for a four oz pate, $14 for a quart of bone broth or stew, means that this is meant for the upper 1% of the Bay Area. But that's now what drew my ire. My problem is that I tried to volunteer with them. I signed up with and went through the kitchen tour. We met, toured the kitchen, ate a meal together and talked. I'll be honest. I was there to learn how to do some canning and other techniques, and because I was a soap maker and was looking for an outlet to sell. Not a problem. I saw it as a win-win. We had a tour and ate a meal. I imagined that we'd sit around a giant table, say thanks for the food, and introduce ourselves one by one or in small groups and proceed to talk. That didn't really happen. I think that I had a total of two people speak to me. I felt like a ghost, much like I did when I went to the racist Christian school. I went around and talked to people, asked questions and was truly interested in what they were doing. I talked to the Kombucha guy who claimed that he'd never made it before and was just trying things out. I mentioned that I'd made Kombucha as well, nothing. I talked to the woman who was preparing our lunch - which was made up of unsold goods that were about to expire. I explained that I was gluten, shellfish, and dairy intolerant and she considered that in her choices of food. But I got my dinner and ate in silence. There was no, "Hey, how did you find out about this place," or "Are you a customer" or "Where are you from?" Nothing but silence. They were looking for a local soap maker and afterwards, I went up and told them that I made soap and had been doing so for about 10 years, and that I taught classes at the adult school. Again nothing. No, can I have a sample (I had some in my car), do you have a card (had them on me), or would you like to come in and present your products to us for consideration? Crickets. Now such a behavior has a name - microagression. It is what happens when people aren't openly hostile towards you in an agressive way, but rather they ignore you or act like you aren't around. It's crazy making because they seem like nice people, but it's clear that they really would rather that you not share the same space as them. This is a white, liberal space for rich people to provide fancy foods for their white, liberal, rich friends and unaffordable prices. Meanwhile, they claim to lose money on everything, yet somehow they can keep that way to big space and continue to provide a weekly menu and have the time and money to fund the processing of their food. At the time, they were looking for volunteers and I told them I was interested. At the time, I had Friday's off and planned to spend that day, earning $1 credit of time for each our worked. But I was not inspired. It didn't seem like I was the type of person they were looking for. They had a newsletter and would show six week trainees from New Orleans, Atlanta, or some other place with poor people. I assumed that their presence meant that there would be space for me. But I learned that libral doesn't mean that they like black people. I made the mistake of walking into a white space as their equal and they were having none of that. Meanwhile, I make a mean bone broth, a fantastic stew and chilli, and a wonderful pate. They inspired me to cook more for myself and go to YouTube and Amazon for inspiration. I could not find it locally within their walls. For that reason, the store is not a fav. I go there for inspiration, but they don't get my money. I don't want to spend my money with people who can't even bother to say hello. read more

I heard about Three Stone Hearth a few weeks ago, and it has already become my new favorite store! I'm on a restrictive diet (AIP), and before I found this store, I had to cook every single meal. Now I have a place that gives me either whole meals or important building blocks for my meals! Their menu changes weekly, and this week was particularly magical: - Ground beef skillet with greens that I added to three meal prep kits. - I devoured the Blueberry Gelatina with Lemon Coconut Cream (probably too fast it was so delicious). Dessert has been one of the hardest things on this diet, so it was so lovely to have this available! - I've never had a carrot orange kombucha before- it was fantastic! I've started to find excuses to drive over from San Francisco on a Saturday to pick up my order. I also used their delivery option once, which was very reasonable. Just started doing a weekly order from TSH to have healthy weeknight dinners for Monday through Thursday night. So far we love the caulironi and cheese, white bean and pastured pork stew with greens, curried red lentil puree with coconut milk, gluten free brownies, pickled beets, mushroom sausage and cabbage soup, chicken liver pate, baby lima bean minestrone with chicken, Dominican beef and plantain casserole*, Nopales Guisados with Pinto Beans, Creamy Carrot-Ginger Soup, Morel's rye bread, lentil chili with lamb. Sea Vegetable Salad with Carrots, Daikon and Burdock, cottage pie*, Piccadilly and black bean pie* and melon gazpacho*. Absolutely scrumptious. *ridiculously delicious, ordered more for freezer AND children loved it even younger more selective eater. We (the adults) find the stews and soups with chicken not super tasty and the meat rather dry. They are edible just kind of blah. On the other hand, the kids like the chicken dishes. We have found this true in the baby lima bean minestrone with chicken, chicken vegetable soup (mirepoix), chicken and rice in Brazilian coconut sauce. The last dish had a ton of rice and not much chicken, like we got the bottom of the pot. So while there have since been really tasty looking chicken dishes especially an African chicken stew, chicken pozole etc I can't stomach spending the money. Given the cost, sometimes $17 for a quart of soup, I expect perfection. Since I'm a rational adult that has spent enormous amounts of $ and that these meals are very nutritious, I will eat it all, every last drop. Let's just say that since we started purchasing food from here, we eat what the kids don't because it costs too much to let it go to waste. :) The customer service is friendly and responsive; I love picking up food and trying samples, though I wish they had better hours. I absolutely love that our family cooking load is reduced and we can enjoy spending time together eating wholesome foods rather than stressing about grocery lists, planning, prepping and cooking during the week. Three Stone Hearth lists "digestibility" as a goal in their mission statement and ... Yelp does it again! Thank You Mud for getting back to me and (finally) listening to the concerns of your customers. Black pepper is now found in almost all processed food so it's incredibly hard to get away from. Now that we no longer make our own food, it's incredibly important that we are allowed to at least spice our own food with the basics just like we used to. Remember the salt and pepper shaker that used to grace our tables? There was a really good reason for that. True, true, black pepper isn't a nightshade but that doesn't mean people can't become sensitive to it. I'm really glad you folks have decided to let us take seasoning into our own hands ;) Three Stone Hearth has an awesome CSA for vegetables and meat (if you cook for yourself) and raw A2 milk. I don't think you can find real, raw, A2 milk anywhere else. I react to it so I can't use it but I gave some to a friend who normally drinks Lactaid and she's signed up. There's a comment about Claravale Raw milk so maybe the A2 isn't there anymore. Not sure. They also have a good bookshelf. There's a book about the gut and psychological diseases which is incredibly important. Who knew the gut was implicated in paranoid schizophrenia? I guess they are temporarily closed right now but I found them at the Adeline Farmers Market. I got the better bitters kraut. It really isn't bitter at all and is delicious, fresh, and some of the tangiest kraut I've had. I really appreciate that some of the best kraut I have had is available local. Love this place - but as others have said, they have strange business hours. I'm now placing my orders on-line so I can get what I want, as they are often out of products I come in to get otherwise. If you like brownies, do NOT miss the gluten free walnut brownies. I'm not on a gluten free diet, but these are the best brownies I've ever eaten: rich, super chocolaty, dense in the right way, and nutty. My husband loves brownies too and had no idea these were gluten free. Although the products are expensive, I know they are a much more healthy and delicious alternative to buying processed products in other stores. read more

This place took us way too long to find. It is perfectly aligned with our desire to eat healthier and with less plastic delivered. Use of cardboard boxes and mason jars is wonderful. They are not available every hour or day. During hours they are open, you stand outside to pick up your order but if you want to shop inside the store, they let you right in. If you go by outside of open hours, you won't be let in. Does that explain why you didn't get in? read more

The communal/community kitchen was a concept beloved by hippies and derided mostly for its healthy but tasteless food. Three Stone Hearth is related to that tradition only by way of ancestry. TSH is a remarkable, revolutionary place whose mission is to not only make great food that nourishes the soul and the land but also to teach people around the country how to do the same in their towns and cities - and in the process, take some of the power out of the hands of the industrial food producers. The food is made by hand in small batches by an army of volunteers guided by any one of the five partners, depending on the task: Porsche Combash, Misa Koketsu, Jessica Prentice, Catherine Spanger, and Larry Wisch. Every ingredient has an identifiable source, and most products are grown within a 100 mile radius of the kitchen. The eggs are pastured, not just 'free range". Vegetables are organic and sustainable. Animal products are raised humanely and with great respect for the land they graze. The food is minimally processed. One of the best surprises is the range of beverages the kitchen produces - healthy fermented drinks that are a great alternative to the confusing array of 'adult' soft drinks found on most supermarket shelves. Every week there are a number of interesting beverages, from Douglas Fir-flavored coolers to Root Beer Coolers to traditional Kvass, a lightly fermented beverage from Eastern Europe that at TSH is made with fermented beets. Started going here a couple months ago. Good decision. I go every other week as yes, it is expensive. But for the quality nutritional meals one gets, you'd do well to make room in your 2010 tiny-ass budget. The reviews on here will give you plenty of reasons why supporting organic community kitchens are in your best interest. So, here's what I do: Get the the fresh stews or soups or rice dishes or whatever the specials are for the week. They usually cost $16 for a quart. When you get home, bake your own potato/steam your own veggies and you get a great meal for 2-4 peeps at about only $20. Totally doable. Well worth it compared to going out and dropping twice as much for far, far, less in nutrition. Their menus always have lots of choice. Their Beet Kvass is superb. read more

We have been coming to TSH for a couple of years now, so I am fairly certain I have sampled everything they have offered thus far...and kudos to them! Other Yelpers have clearly explained all the particulars regarding nutrition, integrity, community-supported kitchens, the Westin Price nutritional movement, and the taste. I probably cannot offer much more other than my food porn experience today....Yes, gluttony and lust have overwhelmed me once again, but since it's from TSH, at least I know these 2 of the supposed "7 Deadly Sins" are not so sinful, after all! If you need any more convincing other than what the other 8 reviews reveal, let me just say COCONUT FLAN....I make my own sometimes, I buy it when I'm at Market Hall, I try not to buy it at Tacubaya (but I am weak...and often succumb)...you get the idea. TSH makes theirs with Strauss milk, Summit Farm eggs, coconut milk, vanilla, some sea salt. and some sort of sugar..and I think that's about it! Packed in a glass container where I can see the caramel-y goodness swimming at the bottom...the creamy mid layer, and the heavy, thick coat of coconut goodness on top...Maybe other people don't get this excited about custard desserts, but this is simply the best around! Another tasty dessert these kind and talented folks make that I cannot get enough of would be the Rose Panna Cotta...romantic dessert at its' finest! Of course these sorts of indulgences force me to head off to the gym, but the ultra high quality, the integrity, and the local ingredients are not what I feel guilty about. No...it's my own indulgence which I have zero intention of foregoing! I cannot recommend the foods, classes, and information from Three Stone Hearth highly enough. First off: this place is not a restaurant. It is not a food market. It is a subscription-only traditional-diet food community kitchen. That means no white flour, no white sugar and food that keeps you young and healthy. Anyone ever heard of Weston A. Price? If you haven't, you should read up.
