    cookies and cream cake slices
    Alexis M.

Butter& has such beautiful cakes, and I've been wanting to try them for the longest time. I ended up trying the cookies and cream cake along with the lemon cake, and personally thought they were just okay overall. The lemon cake was definitely the better of the two, while the cookies and cream tasted pretty average to me. The inside of the shop was super cute, and the staff were friendly as well. I've always wanted to order a full cake from here, but considering the price point and taste, I'm not sure it would be worth it unless you're mainly going for the aesthetics.

I recently got a small expose cake for my partner's birthday. I had tried a slice of their brown butter and meyer lemon cake when I stopped in the store and loved how light and subtly sweet it was. When I saw that they have a lychee and raspberry cake, I knew I had to get that for a birthday cake! It's simple to place an order online and pick up is at their Dogpatch location. Everything was super smooth and I grabbed candles in store when I went to pick it up. The cake was gorgeous with gold lettering on top (you can customize it but I went with the traditional happy birthday). The cake layers were gorgeous and I loved the lighter than usual lychee flavored buttercream and the tart raspberry jam in between the cake layers balanced out the sweetness perfectly. Would definitely recommend Butter& for celebration cakes or just if you're craving a slice of cake. They have seasonal/monthly special flavors as well which I'll definitely need to try in the future.

First time customer here and definitely will not be the last Worth it? Yes! - Ordered a Lychee & Raspberry cake for a going away party in the smallest size available and for the price $, I would say it is absolutely worth it! Ordering: - It was super easy on the website and seamless which made it less stressful when ordering last minute (ordered 2 days before when it was needed which was their standard anyways). Delivery/ Pick up: - I decided to pick up rather than deliver (which could honestly turn into a nightmare especially if it is cake) right before they closed and it was convenient that they were able to contact me through text with updates. Better to pick it up yourself for that peace of mind. Customer service: - As I walked in, my cake was very much ready and the host greeted me with clear instructions of when to keep the cake out before consuming for best quality (instructions also included with the cake). They also wrote a letter that I've asked to be added on the side. Writing on the cake was beautifully done. Letter was nicely written, or typed? Packaging was very secure and cake had no chance of sliding around. Now to the cake itself : - Flavor was absolutely amazing. The lychee and raspberry could not be missed from every bite! It stayed moist and even after days, it was still fragrant and flavorful. - Easy to slice and serve with no mess at all. Each slice off of the cake was clean cut and it stayed pretty. Overall : Highly suggest Butter&! I ordered this cake was for someone else (who is not a huge cake fan but they LOVED it and enjoyed the flavor so much) This cake was cakin' even for its size. Delicious baking by the team at Butter& and I look forward to trying other flavors! I'm getting it for myself this time Thank you for fulfilling our night as well as satisfying our sweet cravings Butter&

The cake shop has been on my list a long time and I was finally in the area. I only wanted a slice of cake. Out of the three options they had, I went with the brown butter and Meyer lemon. The cake was moist and yummy. The flavors worked well together. Even so, I cannot justify coming back and spending $9 for a slice that's about the size of my fist.

There are not that many places that can live up to its hype but Butter& can. Don't even debate ordering from here, just do it. I ordered the brown butter and meyer lemon cake for my girlfriend's birthday and it was probably the most delicious cake I ever had. As Paul from Great British Bakeoff would say "I want the lemon flavors to punch me in the face" and this cake indeed did just that. The lemon was sour enough to pack a punch but not overwhelming enough to be like a war head hard candy. The brown butter balanced it out excellently and I am so excited to try future cake flavors. Now let's next talk about service. I had this cake delivered because I couldn't pick it up and it was exceptional service from beginning to end. The Butter& team was in communication with me 24 hours after I put in my order and made sure all my phone numbers were updated on file so they would be able to contact me or my girlfriend. On top of that, I wanted a golden custom script but sadly what I wanted to say wouldn't have fit on the cake. I didn't realize this was a $20 extra fee and ended up paying for it. Thankfully the staff was so on top of it, that they emailed me the following morning and made sure that this wasn't a mistake. I ended up getting a refund for the $20 after my cake was delivered without even having to contact them. This alone sold me on the integrity of the business let alone the quality of the cakes. I was super thankful. Last but not least let's talk about the delivery. The window I chose was 10-10:30 AM and my cake came by 9:50. I couldn't have asked for more prompt and professional service. So. After going through this experience, ordering delivery, and tasting the cake, I would highly highly recommend Butter& to anyone and everyone. The price you are paying for is not only for the cake itself, but to ensure the workers here at Butter& also receive a fair living wage. That alone is enough for me to want to become a long time customer. With that said, I hope my review pushes you over the edge to order from this wonderful bakery and cheers to the owners for running an amazing business. P.S. One small feedback. You should just create another menu item under the personalized message option that says "Leave Blank" to prevent more experiences like mines. More so because I can only imagine how time consuming it must be for your staff to double check with every customer. Other than that everything is great and easy to navigate.

Wedding cake for 26 and a gluten free small cake.

If I could give them more than 5 stars I would. We got our wedding cake from here and it was the easiest part of the whole wedding. I loved that we could do a tasting at home and we were then able to include my mom and dad via zoom. The communication and ordering was seamless and the staff was so responsive to email questions and scheduling for drop off concerns we had. The drop off at the venue went off without a hitch and our cake was ready to be cut when we were ready! For our anniversary they sent us a little order reminder and we got a cake to cut on our one year anniversary! So happy with our choice and loved the cake?

Mini 2 tiered strawberry & cream kintsugi marble cake
    Jessica H.

My best friend ordered a mini 2-tiered strawberry & cream kintsugi marble cake w/ fresh flowers for her wedding. I can't speak on the ordering process, but I was the contact person for delivery & that process went very smoothly. The day before delivery, I received a text from the bakery with an update/confirmation that the cake would be delivered on the expected date & time. On the day of, I received tracking information & the cake was safely & timely delivered to the restaurant. The cake itself was not too sweet. The strawberry compote/jam in between the layers of vanilla cake was nice & tart and complimented the cream on the exterior. Overall this was a very lovely wedding cake.

A lot of friends recommended their cakes since I am looking for a wedding cake. I was checking their website and saw they have a cake tasting option. I ordered and it was soo good! I loved all the options which is going to make picking a cake so much harder. The staff was super friendly and they make ordering online for the cake tasting and pick up so easy. I am def going to be ordering cakes from here. It is so bright inside which makes the place so inviting.

    Small Lychee + Raspberry Cake

Butter& truly does have high quality cakes and flavors. We saw the lychee raspberry cake and had to try it. The raspberry jam/paste had a nice natural flavor, sweet and slight fresh tartness. The frosting had a slight lychee flavor, but I was hoping it would be a bit more noticeable. It was still light and delicious. The cake itself was quite dense. Good moisture level but very packed and dense. You can tell the cake was made fresh and they provide detailed instructions on how to best enjoy it. Pickup was super straightforward and the inside of the bakery is modern and nice. High quality cake, but definitely a steep price. In terms of value, that'd be the one place I would knock it just a bit

    Brown Butter & Meyer Lemon

I've had this bakery bookmarked for ages so I was thrilled when my partner surprised me with one of their cakes for my birthday! He preordered a brown butter and meyer lemon cake and pickup was quick and easy. Their store is bright and clean and you can purchase single slices of their cakes too! First impression: what a beautiful cake! And such detailed instructions for transport, storage, and serving. We refrigerated the cake since we were eating it much later that day, but took it out 3 hours ahead of time as advised before slicing. The cake was delicious! It was moist, had a wonderful lemon flavor, and the buttercream was rich but not overly sweet. I don't usually like cake much because it can be overly sweet but I loved this one and would definitely order from them again!

These cakes are delicious -- there's no arguing that! I was excited to order one for a Friendsgiving to share with friends that have not had Butter& before. I ordered the cake to arrive 1.5 hours prior to having to leave, so there would be plenty of time in case of traffic, etc. I noticed 3:30 pass... 3:45, 4pm, and still no delivery. I texted the number provided and was met with pretty poor customer service -- just telling me to contact DoorDash because that's who they use for deliveries. Also kind of shocked given the caliber of this business they'd use a service like that for deliveries. Anyways - my cake is now on its way, and will get here late, making me late to the dinner. Hoping the Dasher handled the cake with care. Just a disappointing service experience that I was not expecting from a company like this! Lesson learned - go pick up the cake myself. Update: was refunded the delivery fee plus a small portion of the cake price because of these issues

After a handful of dinners in Mission Bay, I've discovered Butter& on a mission to solve my need for a sweet treat and am grateful to have found the solution here. The bakery is clean, simple and modern in lockstep with the vibe of the neighborhood and the room is mostly used by the staff for assembling and creating cakes. When you walk in, you'll see cases of what cakes they have in rotation, and what slices are left for the day to purchase. I personally fell in love with their holiday stroopwaffel flavor back in December that had me coming back over and over. The cake just like all of their varieties was simple, everything tasted freshly made, and had notes of cinnamon that really made it a perfect indulgence for the Christmas season. The strawberry & cream cake was a delightful take on the traditional cake and the strawberries and cream also tasted extremely fresh and not filled with chemicals and sugar like the comparable store bought variety or ones from 85 degree bakery. What I love the most about the experience at Butter& is how knowledgeable and excited the staff are when it comes down to talking about cakes. They used words that I had never heard before to see if I was eating it now or later to ensure they brought the cake down to the right temperature. And when I bought it for the Christmas dinner back in Fremont, they gave me all the steps needed for proper refrigeration, and time needed to temper the cake to be served. At no surprise, my sister mentioned she actually had the cake before at their dear friends wedding. Definitely worth the visit if you're in the mood for some cake!

Presentation alone will tell you these are fancy expensive cakes! Hubby of course got 2 cakes for me (needless to say, he's excessive). My 5 year old chose the gold leaf topping. Jeez Louise lol. The name of this bakery tells it all--cakes are literally primarily made out of butter. After just a tiny sliver you really feel the butter in your body. The cakes are heavy and dense but very soft. Being Asian, I prefer mildly flavored and super light sponge cake anyday, though I do thoroughly enjoy a Sprinkles red velvet cupcake or Cafe 86 ube flan cupcake. Converse to the cake, the frosting is light and relatively airy. Vanilla cake has plenty of visible vanilla beans in the frosting which I love--you can see, smell and taste the real vanilla. Not too sweet, so I can more easily eat this one. Lemon brown butter (?) cake had 2 layers of frosting--brown butter (?) and lemon curd--in between each cake layer. Lemon is not my choice of flavor in dessert ever, and this curd was definitely on the more tangy side. It was fine, but this cake is super sweet and incidentally not at all what my hubby ordered--they must have switched cakes. He ordered hazelnut or something and he has the receipt to prove it. A bit disappointing as it was my birthday cake but it's not his fault. All this being said, my Italian hubby loved these cakes and said they're the best he's had. But--he's also not a true sweets lover so take his word with a grain of salt.

When it's overcast & cold outside, does anyone want cold pineapple buns to go with it? That was my first experience, so I was curious about how the do over was going to go. Night & day... Yelpess with the mostess Cherylynn was spot on when she said the buns need to be warm & eaten asap. This is key to experiencing a stellar treat over a humdrum one. On our 2nd visit they were hot. They were pillowy. They were divine. Gloomy sunset weather? It could be RAINING outside & I wouldn't care right now. It was a total 180. Butter. Do it! Our cousins were familiar with both bakeries and graciously volunteered to be our foodie guides as we drove to these two bakeries Saturday morning. After visiting Tartine and B Patisserie, Arizmendi was our final bakery and our last stop on our Bay Area foodie tour. Just like the other two bakeries, Arizmendi was a popular destination, it was different than the other two in the selection of the pastries, and I highly recommend their corn cranberry scone and their cheese focaccia. Arizmendi is also located in the Mission District specifically on Valenica and 24th Street. The bakery is in between a Royal gas station and the KitTea Cat Lounge. Parking consists of street parking and just like the other bakeries, parking could be challenging, but Arizmendi is worth the trouble parking and walking to this confectionary paradise. This bakery is a business where their baked goods are enjoyed at home since there is minimal seating. What's unique about this bakery compared to the other two is how the baked goodies are selected. It is self serve where it's a little hectic trying to maneuver around other customers to pick the pastries and breads you desire. The young black lady behind the register who checked us out was courteous, friendly, and took care of us quickly. As you enter Arizmendi, there are four wooden display cases with plexiglass holding scones, cinnamon rolls, muffins, pies, croissants, focaccia, cookies, and shortbreads. As you peer through the plexiglass to decide what to select, make sure to grab the provided wax to pick up your baked goods and place them in the provided bags. One of our friends asked us to grab scones, so scones were one of the items we knew we were going to purchase. My wife selected other items, but I asked her for a focaccia because my cousin said that Arizmendi was know for their pizza breads. I highly recommend you purchase their corn cranberry scones. These scones are hearty, the cranberry is plentiful, and I really enjoyed these while I was drinking a coffee at home. The focaccia I picked was a cheese focaccia made with poblanos, kale, and queso fresco. That square pizza bread was a savory revelation where I devoured that as snack after heating it in our home toaster oven. It was cheesy, the poblanos and kale were tasty, and I completely agreed with my cousin's assessment about their pizza bread. We're so grateful to our cousins for taking valuable time to serve as our foodie tour guides during our trip to San Francisco. Bay Area denizens are blessed to have three bakeries where they can satisfy their pastry, dessert, and bread cravings. We're fans of Arizmendi's scones and pizza bread.

They offer a variety of baked in house items that range from the savory ( mushroom and cheese "tart") to the sweet of banana croissant invention. EVERYTHING is tasty. Items are limited in quantity, so go early. The mushroom green onion tart is delish! It has a generous amount of mushrooms, manchego cheese, and light green onions. It's a lovely flavor profile. The only downside is that it's not given to you heated. Eating it cold was not optimal. The banana "tart" because I don't recall the exact name, is to die for! It's sweet, it's sooo good! It's like banana crack. It has caramelized parts to it, and you won't want to share it!! The double backed pistachio/blackberry croissant is a food group all its own. It's everything you want in a pastry! The Thai tea was just OK. Super pricey for the amount. It's not that traditional taste profile. The people that work at Neighbor big house are friendly, expedient with service, and this definitely needs to be on your secret places to try when you're visiting SF. It's not that we want to gatekeep, but you are gonna want all these pastries to yourself!
