I made a reservation a few weeks in advance but was unfortunately not impressed by my experience here. I understand it's a popular spot for Philly natives but theirs nothing special or unique about this steakhouse. Our server Brian was nice. I ordered what I was familiar with, my friend ordered the pasta and did not finish it.

This place is so beautiful and the filet mignon was melting in my mouth! It was amazing. It was packed on a Tuesday night so I definitely recommend getting a reservation. Our server was nice.

Four us came for dinner in a Saturday night. We came about a half an hour early so we could sit at the bar. Robbie was our bartender. He took great care of us. And he made the perfect dirty martini. I started with a Caesar salad with no croutons, but added garbanzo beans. I asked for the anchovies but they were not the white kind I like. Then I got the filet mignon medium rare. We ordered a lot of sides including the stuffed hashbrowns, which is their signature side. OMG it was delicious!! Perfectly crunchy on the outside and potato-y on the inside. We also ordered the broccolini, the mushrooms and onions and the mac & cheese. Service ok. Water constantly refilled. But wine and all drinks were backed up. They did ultimately comp a round of wine since the wait was so long. We could have drank more!! Our salads sat a long time in front of us and again a long wait after saying we wanted a few boxes to go. They seemed short handed which is surprising for a Saturday night.

Delicious from the service, to the ambiance, to the food. Not one thing we had was average. The food was incredible. I had the filet- highly recommend the hashbrown as a side as well. My boyfriend said that they had the Martinez he's ever had. Also the seafood platter was to die for. Come here for your next steakhouse experience!

My first experience was amazing. The vibes were great and beautiful. The background music was perfect. The interior decor was very classic. Came here for desserts and they did delivered. Got coffee, baked Alaska and crème brûlée which was all amazing. All the employees and waiters were super amazing. Highly recommend coming here for dining experience.

Bone in filet mignon. Hash. Broccolini.

A well known steakhouse that did not disappoint! Service was friendly and professional. The small bar was cozy and bartenders very lively. 1. Bone in filet mignon - Big cut, cooked perfectly, loads of flavor and did not seem dry at all. Had it with broccolini. 2. Hash brown - Lived up to the hype with "full of love" filling inside. Lots of flavor, can be a bit salty on the outside. 3. Onion soup - Big portion. Very good flavor and lots of cheese on top. Appreciated that it did not have too much bread in it. Initially hesitant since it's a steakhouse. 4. Escargot - Very good, hot, garlicky. Close to classic and comes with some crunchy bread. 5. Cheesecake - Soft, fluffy, likely has cheesecake mixed in with sour cream or yogurt. Very good! Overall had a well rounded hearty meal and will definitely be back for more! I agree with other reviews that Barclay Prime has more advanced meats and a bigger menu but this steakhouse still executed well!

Left - Mashed Potatoes, Right - Mac N Cheese Back Middle - New York Strip

For starters we had the complimentary made in house biscuits with honey butter. Arguably one of, if not the best, complimentary breads I have ever had. Best way to describe it is grands flaky layers but turned up to a thousand. They're made in house by a lady who makes all of their desserts and has since the restaurant opened their doors. We also tried to wedge which was plenty big enough for two people to split. It was very good and the first time I have had a wedge with Russian dressing however, that could be a Philly thing. The steaks were flavorful, moist and cooked to perfection. The crust on the steak was perfect and did not contain too much gristle. For sides we had mashed potatoes and mac 'n' cheese. The mac 'n' cheese was good but not top 3 or 5 mac 'n' cheese in my experiences. However, the mashed potatoes were great! Have that homemade, buttery taste that pairs great with the steak and one of their side sauces. For dessert we had the Lemon Ice Box Pie. It was very good as well. Not too tart or too sweet. The service was 10/10. Jared was our waiter and he was very helpful and informative. He knew everything there was to know about the menu and history of the restaurant.

Blackberry Cocktail

Butcher and Singer is truly a work of art. It is one of the most beautiful restaurants I have ever seen. The art and decor boasts post prohibition vibes. Service was excellent, even when we had a large party that came in later in the evening. I took all the waiter's recommendations, and was not disappointed. I can honestly say their rolls are the best I have ever eaten. I ordered the Blackberry cocktail, which was very refreshing. For my entree, I did Surf & Turf with the truffle butter, and the filet was one of the best I have had. If you are looking for a 5 star meal and experience when you are in Philly, you will not be disappointed!

NY Strip

Butcher and Singer is a steakhouse, and in Steven Starr's thematic approach, has a kind of Mad-Men-era vibe. (Starr is famously a concert promoter-turned-restauranteur, which is often credited for his curated collection of foodie experiences.) There is a fascinating collection of Manhattans on the cocktail menu, and I found it interesting that there are no martinis featured on the menu in the way that the Manhattans are. I was sorely tempted to try the Robber Baron, which would be a Rob Roy by most definitions. I ordered a NY Strip, which is a cut I almost never cook at home, but often find on the menu in steakhouses. It's a leaner, grainier, beefier cut than the fan-favorite ribeye, but I make ribeye at home all the time. One thing I'll say about Butcher and Singer's take, and it reminded me immediately of the specimen my son, who attends a local technical high school's culinary arts program, brought home from class one memorable day: the cut was of the bone-in variety, and this made the experience of eating it completely different from the thinner boneless version I've usually enjoyed. I prefer the bone-in version hands down. The kitschy, throwback-to-bygone-era vibe even includes Baked Alaska as a dessert option. It's hard to pass up; like the Lobster Thermidor at the Knife and Fork in Atlantic City, it's one of the few (if only) places I go that has it on the menu. The service is impeccable-crisp and professional.

Complimentary Birthday brownie with ice cream.

After being in Philly for sometime (temporarily), we finally made it to the storied Butcher and Singer. The restaurant had been a bank and a stock brokerage before it became a restaurant. Stephen Starr renovated and reopened it in 2004. Its cavernous interior looks like it had been a bank - the overly dark atmosphere isn't my favorite. I'm not sure why they keep the lighting so low - it's not inviting at all - even with the bold design. Enough of that - let's talk food! First up - the biscuits. Light, fluffy and delicious, they were as good as any I've had - what a great starter! Next, The Wedge - I don't eat blue cheese often, but tonight was the exception. It's rich, creamy, but bold and pungent flavor is something I can only have once in a while. The salad was very good with LOTS of blue cheese chunks and dressing - a little too much. See picture - a thick layer underneath the bacon bits was slightly overwhelming. It could have come with twice as much lettuce - don't get me wrong - the dressing was fabulously decadent - but sometimes 'less is more'. We then ordered the crab cake - who expects to get a first class crab cake at a steakhouse - I wasn't. But it was - I spent 25 years in MD, so I have to admit I'm a crab aficionado. The lump crab with hardly any filling was excellent! Next, the stars of the evening - the steaks. I'm old fashioned - I like my steaks medium to medium well - pink throughout. I typically order filets - but after Delmonico's (NYC), Barclay Prime (Phil.) and Ruth's Chris (DC) all served undercooked versions, I was hesitant to order a filet. After a brief discussion with our server at Butcher (he said the filet would have to be 'butterflied' for medium well), I opted for the sirloin, which is MUCH easier to cook medium/medium well....and they executed perfectly! It was so juicy with an excellent texture and a rich peppery flavor. I decided immediately, no more filets - I was glad I converted. My partner however, resisted and ordered the filet mignon. It wasn't medium well as she had ordered - it was well done - and dry as a result. I want to point out, this is not a criticism of Butcher - but the realization you can't order a filet 'medium well'.....anywhere. From now on - we both order sirloins. The reviews of the stuffed hash browns on Yelp were so good, we HAD to order them - even though our go to potatoes with steak has always been mashed - not this time!! We ordered both - the mashed potatoes, which were very good, and the hashed browns, which were 'over the top', and a must order. It was my birthday dinner, and an excellent one I'll not forget!

It was a resounding 100/100 experience. Crab cake: OMG BEST EVAAAAR Fresh rolls: I CAN DIE NOW HAPPILY OMG WITH HONER BUTTER I AM DEAD Chilean Sea Bass: THIS IS THE BEST CHILEAN SEA BASS I'VE EVER HAD, AND THE PORTION WAS HEFTY Broccolini: exquisite Evan's Filet Mignon with goat cheese and scallops: He gave it a 9.5/10! Investment Manhattan: I took my time with this, as it was the equivalent of an expensive perfume you never want to fully deplete. Again, I'm a cocktail snob, and this sophisticated concoction blew me away. They included a sherry and Grand Marmier in it, so...yeah. Ah say GOTTDAM! Ambience: Classic and upscale Service at the bar: Outstanding I will return with glee.

Butcher and Singer is a fancy spot in Philadelphia's vibrant restaurant scene, brought to life by the legendary restaurateur Stephen Starr. It's like old Hollywood glamour of the 1940s. Its dim lighting, high ceilings, leather booths, and ornate chandeliers exude a timeless classiness. Originally constructed in the 1920s, it was home to a financial institution before its transformation into one of Philly's most iconic dining destinations. The building itself is steeped in history. The space retains its historic charm with art deco-inspired details, seamlessly blending old-world elegance with modern luxury. I stopped in for just a drink this time, and the Old Fashioned stole the show. I've eaten here several times but this stop was just to drink. Definitely put this in the list.

Ask the Community - Butcher and Singer

Would love to sit at the bar and enjoy apps and a few good cocktails. Is this doable on a Saturday evening, if we go early? TIA

I imagine it gets crowded and the bar isn't large, but yes, you should absolutely try that. There are many other places you could wander off to if it's full.

Good for date night?

100%

Do the steaks include sides or is it only the cut of meat?

Sides are a la carte.

Would you say the vibe is more couples, family, work dinners or friends?

I would definitely say more work dinners or friends going out for a boujee night!

Is there a dress code?

Not officially but its best to dress a bit nicer

So I'm looking for a nice place with nice calming music that we can eat and get up and have a small dance to a song. I don't want a night club. I want a nice please to eat and dance to some jazzy music if I feel like it. Is it like that?I assume not?

No, it is not that kind of place.

Hello! We have a small group of about 10-14 coming into town for this December's Army-Navy game. Dinner at a great steakhouse is a long-lived post-game tradition for us. Is your restaurant appropriate for two well-behaved kids, ages 10 and 13? TIA!

Absolutely. We would love to welcome your family to dinner. Usually we begin booking 8 weeks in advance. If your group is 13 or larger you are welcome to reach out to our event coordinator. Diane@starr-restaurants.com

Do you serve dinner at the bar for people dining alone?

Absolutely. We serve the full menu at the bar and 6 lounge tables available for walk in guests.

What do you use in the roasted chicken jus? How do you cook it so that it gets so tender & juicy?

We do put a tab of seasoned butter under the skin of the chicken while it is roasting. The juices in the pan are then reduced with butter and chicken stock until the sauce is shiny and to the desired consistency. I hope this helps!

Do you have a corkage fee? Can I bring a favorite bottle with me?

The corkage fee is $25 per bottle for up to 4 bottles. We ask that it not be a wine that we have on our list.

For birthdays, do you do anything special? Such as writing happy birthday on the dessert plate?

Yes! We are happy to put whichever dessert you order on a Happy Birthday plate with a candle. If you desire a personalized plate please give us a call 48 hours in advance so we can have our pastry team create one for you. We look forward to… Read more

I am curious what cut of beef you use for your Delmonico steak? Some restaurants typically use a rib eye cut, ( Delmonico's here in NY ) while others use a (NY/KC ) strip. Thank you for your time. Cheers!

Thanks for asking. We use an 18oz Prime Ribeye from Strassburger meats. It is my personal favorite!

It's so strange that some people say the steaks are perfect and others say it tastes like Outback Steakhouse. What is the difference between a $18.99 steak and a $49.00 one?

They also were very kind in offering us a comp dessert for our anniversary which we got to pick. Typically restaurants just bring out whatever dessert they want so I appreciated that we got to choose. We chose a vanilla Carmel cake. It was good but we were also so stuffed! Minus 2 stars - as the end of the night, our server disappeared & when he did reappear, I could never get his attention to get the bill. I flagged someone else down but they just shrugged. It took me putting my jacket on (& 20 extra mins) to get Lawrence's attention. Also, it was close to the end of the night as we were wrapping up - maybe 9:30ish. There were still PLENTY of guests eating dinner, and the workers started breaking down tables in our section, moving things around, replacing large tables for smaller ones, etc. We're trying to have a nice (expensive!) dinner & workers are cleaning up around us. The space is breathtaking--soaring 38-foot sculpted ceilings and a 34-foot wine tower at the center of the bar create a truly luxurious and unforgettable ambiance. The hospitality is just as impressive as the setting. Every member of the staff was professional and attentive, and the managers checked on us throughout the meal to ensure everything was perfect. Our waitress, Ayoola, was exceptional--warm, personable, and genuinely thoughtful. She made us feel completely taken care of from start to finish. We began at the bar with a cocktail called the VIP, which was perfectly balanced--smooth, refreshing, and very easy to enjoy. I didn't even think to take a photo until we were nearly finished--that's always a good sign. The complimentary bread was outstanding--warm, buttery, and perfectly fluffy with a delicate texture. Easily one of the best I've had, and very hard to resist. My husband and I shared three appetizers, two mains, and three sides, and even the sides were generously portioned. It was quite a lot of food, but every dish was beautifully prepared, flavorful, and deeply satisfying. The tuna tartare--with avocado and prawn chips--was incredibly fresh, delicious, and well-seasoned, with a delicate balance that really let the quality of the fish shine. The medium-rare sesame ahi tuna was another standout--perfectly seared, tender, and rich in flavor. It was so good that my husband started digging in before I could even snap a photo. We couldn't even finish all the sides, and by the end, we were completely full and had to skip dessert--but that just gives us a reason to come back.
