Look, I have always loved this Burrito Express. But I ordered my regular burritos and enchiladas from there yesterday. Man, something changed with the cheese they are using in their food! It is extremely stringy like string cheese and has absolutely no taste anymore. I am so disappointed, that I don't think I will return here again. Has anyone else noticed this change in the quality of the cheese that they are using? I called the restaurant to see about the change, and they said it was the same Monterey Jack cheese that they always use. Sorry, this is more like Mozzarella string cheese. Not like it was before. What in carnation is this joint all about?!! The carne asada burrito was more like an overload of beans and some hard reheated carne. Drove by this spot for many, many years and finally tried it. I've been coming to Burrito express since Vic owned it, and he was shipping frozen Burritos across the country to college students who missed good Mexican food. I usually order breakfast and have something called the Sterling special! Yes that's right I have my own breakfast dish named after me! But it's not on the wall don't look for it! 10 years later still love this place. I thought after a few tries I would give a review for the new 40th Anniversary "Pasadena Burrito". The Pasadena burrito is a single tortilla with beans, carne asada, cheese, guac sauce, tomatoes, onions, cilantro and fresh made french fries. When you first pick up the burrito you can feel the fries on the inside, a crunchy little change from any of the other soft fillings you would normally find in a burrito. I opted for the verde sauce on the side so the fries stay crispy. They fry them fresh per burrito so the order takes an extra few minutes. Just pour the sauce on then take a bite. Definitely the way to go. If I could change anything (and you can add or subtract pretty much anything normally from the menu) next time I will try it without the onions the way my son prefers it. This burrito doesnt replace my favorites, but it is a pretty good choice and quite filling. Over the past few years, the food has still stood up to most other burrito places in Pasadena. I did discover besides carne asada they have beef burritos. Slow cooked sort of stewed beef as an option for burritos. read more

Burrito Express has been a favorite since we moved to Pasadena 12 years ago. The JVC burrito is hands-down the best burrito ever. With carnitas is preferred but I've had meatless and they still rock! In the current climate, we phone in our order and it's usually ready in 10 to 15 minutes. About the time it takes to get there. Everyone is wearing masks and still friendly behind them. If you're still in doubt, my 6-year-old daughter highly recommends the chicken tacos. She requests them every time we walk on Washington. read more

Been coming here for many years. Was always pretty good and usually a weekly customer. Since the original older gentleman, always behind the register, handed it off to family, it has slowly gone downhill. The burritos used to be full of good tasting fillings. Now there's more tortilla than anything else and not nearly as tasty. Cost cutting measure? I don't know, just disappointed. Pasadena born and raised and I used to LOVE this place! Growing up my family would be here at least once a week. After moving away from the area, my boyfriend and I were visiting friends and I told them we just HAD to come here to eat because I missed out the last time we visited because it was closed. Clearly in my 5 year absence things have gone down hill, flavor and price wise. $27 for 4 spicy chicken burritos with no extras/no chips/no drinks is a damn joke. ALSO we got there 30 minutes after they opened, why was the meat in our burritos cold?! Completely unacceptable and I felt embarrassed for the suggestion.When I was coming here the owner used to run the cash register. I'm sure his presence had a big impact on the quality before. This review is not for Burrito Express, but actually for "Shavies", the little shave ice stand connected to it. While Shavies' fare pales in comparison to the shave ice establishments I've visited on Hawaii, it'll definitely satisfy your shave ice Jones and keep you from impulsively maxing out your credit card with a spontaneous flight to the 50th state because you couldn't control yourself. They have a pretty decent selection of flavors, and you can get ice cream on the bottom and sweetened condensed milk on top if you want. A regular size is $4.25 and a large is $5 and change. Cards are accepted, but you have to go around to Burrito Express to pay, so it's easier if you bring cash. I believe Shavies is also only open during the summer months, too. One warning, Burrito Express is not like most Mexican restaurants. No, you don't get chips for free. There's no self-serve salsa and pico di gallo bar, refrigerator full of Jaritos, or homemade guacamoli. Burrito Express is Burrito Express. It's a funky stand on the corner, and they do things their own way - always with a smile. So leave your expectations at Baja Fresh. Now, the food: The Ross Perrot burrito is, in my opinion, the most important burrito in all of Los Angeles. I've eaten hundreds of them, and I never get tired. You've got to try one. Either regular or Vic's Special (smothered in green sauce). You can't go wrong. Their hot sauce that comes in little cups is amazing. Not SUPER hot, but very tasty. Another personal favorite is the quesadillas with chicken.
