Well the food was great although I have had better mostly the sides the meat is good, I got a 3 meat between me & my partner and I still ate a bag of expensive bar b que burns brand chips. We arrived at our hotel and wanted something local. We ordered through Doordash and the service was very prompt. The food was disappointing. The ribs were tough and flavorless. Their sauce tastes like it came out of a bottle. The potatoes in the potato salad were cooked to mush. The green beans were cooked to a mush, as well. The sliced beef was nice and tender, but all but one bite had any flavor. And then it was just where they must have dumped all the salt. If I can give one compliment, the dirty rice was good. Nickie took our order, SO SWEET, asked us our names, gave us awesome recommendations and made sure we got to try all the favorites. We got a 3 meat dinner to split, brisket, ribs, and spicy sausage. 3 sides, mac n cheese (to die for), beans (amazing), and green beans out of this world y'all. Okay so I'd hate to say it guys but I think there must have been a rift in the family because Pappa's Burns original doesn't taste so original anymore. The love... unfortunately, just isn't there anymore. The meat wasn't tender, the sides were lacking in favor, and the meal made me nostalgic for the old group that worked in the back who knew how to keep up the legend of Pappa Burns. This was my first time visiting Burns and I'd heard so many positive things about it. I was really looking forward to going and getting some amazing bbq. I'm originally from Houston (born and raised) and visit often. I now live in Los Angeles and often crave the comfort foods of home, including BBQ. So when I'm in town I take advantage of the usually superb food. Unfortunately, I was highly disappointed and totally let down by my experience today. I understand today was a holiday, Juneteeth and perhaps that's why they were very busy. Plus it was also a Friday, I get it. Nevertheless, that's not an excuse for poor service and even worse food. I waited in line for a little over an hour just to get my order taken. It was raining a little, very wet, hot, humid and there were plenty of mosquitoes out too! Typical Houston, nothing new. However, it was a bit unorganized upon arriving and it was also my first time coming here. Apparently you needed to get a number first from a security guard/officer working near the front of the patio, then get in a long line that extended past the burger joint. Then as the line moves, you stand in the patio area before someone takes your order. Since I waited in line for a over an hour, it was a little after 5pm by the time it was my turn to give my order to a woman outside. I asked if they were out of anything and she said yes, there was no more chicken or potatoe salad and if I wanted pickles and onions on the side, it would be possible that by the time my order was ready they'd be out of that too. That was definitely a bummer since I was looking forward to trying their potatoe salad and I also LOVE pickles and onions with my BBQ. I was then told I'd need to wait to go inside to pay and then gave the make and model of my car as well as the number I was given when I was first got there. This is how they're supposed to identify you when your order is ready, as you need to go back and wait in your car after you pay for your order. There were only 2 cashiers working and the one that rung me up accidentally rang each of my plates up wrong (entered 3 meats instead of 2 meats for all 3 orders). Luckily I noticed, mentioned it to her and she apologized and redid my order. At no point did anyone mention to me that because I ordered sliced beef it would take an additional 30 min or that they ran out of the sides I ordered: beans, green beans, dirty rice, macaroni. My receipt was stamped 5:11pm. I waited in my car for over 40 min and still nothing. We were parked right in front of the restaurant on the street. My mom is handicapped and had been waiting in the car this entire time. She flagged down a female worker and asked about the status of our order. Unfortunately, the female was very short, clearly irritated, annoyed, probably extremely tired and rude. She wasn't wearing a hair net, gloves or mask. I understand she's just delivering food to various cars, but other workers doing the same thing were wearing gloves and all of the others were wearing masks. I work for the biggest liquor supplier in the world and deal with people all the time from 2pm to 2am. I know what it's like to be overworked, tired and not in the best mood. But good customer service, being friendly, kind and treating people the way you'd like to be treated goes a long way. It also speaks volumes about a business in general. The female worker tells my mom in a very curt, cold manner that they're super busy, only have 4 cooks working, can't she see all the cars lined up throughout the street and that everyone there is working and busy. They will get to us when they get to us. My mom shows her the receipt, she dismisses her and says it doesn't matter what we ordered, they'll get to our order when its our turn. She then says she needs to see what we ordered. She states that oh, because we ordered sliced beef thats whats taking so long because they didn't have any ready and someone inside "should've told me" it would be an extra 30 min. We finally got our order at 6:15pm over an hr after I paid for it (at 5:11pm). Again, I understand, its Juneteenth, a Friday, this isn't my first rodeo. I tell my mom this better be the BEST bbq I've tasted since it took over 2hrs to finally get it!! We get home and as soon as I open up the boxes (I got 3 orders of 2 meat plates) I noticed the sides of TWO of the plates were wrong!! Uuuhhh. Annoying and already off to a terrible start considering the over 2hrs of wait time. One order was supposed to have been macaroni and green beans and the other beans and macaroni. Instead ALL 3 plates had the same 2 sides of beans and dirty rice. To keep it 100 the ribs were good, but definitely not AH-MAZING. However, the sliced beef that apparently was the reason for the over 1hr wait on the food was very tough, dry and lacked juiciness. Boy was I disappointed. I wanted to LOVE it, I did. This is probably my favorite BBQ restaurant in Houston since my other one closed down recently. Their other 2 locations, on Antoine and N. Shepherd have closed down, so they are just back to the original location as far as I know. They have remodeled to where you can walk in and order at a counter. There are still no indoor seats, but there are about 6 outdoor wood benches to sit at. When you order at the counter, you can sit on a few benches inside the ordering area, but they're not really for eating though. I have been coming here for years for their fall-apart ribs, melt in your mouth brisket and homemade links. They have regular, chicken and homemade links. i usually order the homemade, which are not like some other places in town where the casing is chewy. They smoke the sausage longer so the casing is crispy similar to smoked boudain and you can bite right through it. My typical order is the 3 meats for 11.99. This comes with no sides, just break onion and pickles upon request. Although I'm one of the only white person's here when I show up, they still give me great service like family. This hole in the wall is not to be missed by any BBQ lover. read more

Sigh. I don't think there is a greater disappointment in life after you ask for moist brisket with burnt ends but instead receive lean tough pieces of meat with minimal bark. The ribs had a good smoky flavor and the BBQ sauce was one of the better sweet sauces I have tried. I gave Burns Original BBQ (a Texas Monthly Top 50 BBQ joints) a try after receiving a message from the owner that "Burn's Bar-B-Q & Catering" on Shepherd is not the same location as the famous "Burns Original BBQ" on De Priest, which had just re-opened. read more

Had lunch here today with a friend from Houston. I had seen this place on " Man, Fire, Food". Rogers description of the place was exactly what I found. I had a nice chat about BBQ's places in the parking lot with a gentleman that worked there, Bryon Dunham. He told me I would like it and I did. The woman at counter was very friendly and joked with me how a pronounced Boston. I had the ribs and brisket, they were text book done. What has happened to Burns!? The taste and flavor I've known for years is no longer there! The Mac & Cheese reminds me of the glue paste we use to eat when we were in kindergarten! The only difference is the Mac & Cheese is yellow! The ribs no longer fall of the bone like the used too. In the past, I really didn't need the bar b que sauce because the ribs were tender and well seasoned....not these ribs! Everything was tasty! The green beans were kind of sweet but not in a bad way. The sauce was also very good. Be prepared to sit outside. The seating was covered and there were large fans circulating air. The flies were really bad. We sat at a table in the middle not directly in front of a fan and it seemed like they were bothering us lot than other tables. We went here with some friends while visiting the area. I ordered the sliced meat (brisket) sandwich. It is just meat on two slices of white bread however the serving size was much larger than I expected. I LOVE that the meat is served with the sauce on the side. Sandwich was very good. My hubs got the brisket and chicken. He really liked both. The sauce was also very very flavorful. I would recommend the Burns lemonade. Neither of us cared for the Mac and cheese but that is just a preference thing. We are definitely going back there to eat again next time we are in town. read more

Burns is a staple in the Acres Homes neighborhood, and if I lived closer I would probably frequent here. Someone usually brings it to me, so I have not visited in over 20yrs. I hear the lines, wait can be long or they may run out of something in the late evenings. It definitely hits the spot, and my only qualm would be the potato salad. I'm not sure if it's homemade but it takes just like a Wal-Mart/H‑E‑B store bought salad. I will try different sides next time. read more

I love chop beef baked potatoes and for the price the potato was 1/2 the size plate and BURNED. The bottom was charred and I was so hungry I ate half. Great BBQ! I had the two meat plate with ribs and brisket. While I admittedly am not a BBQ connoisseur, I was thoroughly impressed with the ribs. I usually don't eat ribs, but these were cooked perfectly. The brisket was also great, it had a nice smoke ring on it. It also didn't have too much fat, just the right amount. For sides, I chose green beans and BBQ beans. Both were solid. I definitely will try to go back and try their homemade sausage. Be ready to wait in line, this place is popular. I just went, 2 meat plate with Brisket and Homemade Links. The Beans are good (think Ranchero Beans), Potato Salad was good - These are the only sides they have. Homemade Links are on par with IF NOT BETTER THAN Killen's - They have some nice spice to them (not on fire but not bland) and the texture is on par with Killen's, It was damned good. The Brisket is slathered with sauce by default, I begged them to not do that and just give some sauce on the side (I even offered to pay extra) but they looked at me funny and told me that's the only way it comes. As for quality - It was low....it reminded me of Demeris' "Lunch Meat" quality brisket but I saw them slicing some decent fall apart quality meat back there.....coulda caught an off brisket? - Dunno. I asked for Bread/Onions/Pickles - 3 slices of pickles, 3 strips of onion, and no bread. They can sit at the table with Triple J's and Gatlin's but they ain't touching Killen's (except for DAT SAUSAGE) Service was a little lack luster and just well....hood - That's to be expected with a joint off in the cut in Acres Homes though lol read more

I just rushed by Burns to pick up my online order. Please tell me why Burns is selling old meat. I order three meats to go, which was ribs, links and chicken and every piece of meat was old and dry. Burns, you should be ashamed of yourself for selling food that is not eatable. Something is wrong with your kitchen staff. Let me give you a piece of business advise, you are not making money by selling old meat, you are establishing distrust and distrust.
