We had lunch at Burger Deck Today. All of their seating is outdoors and they are dog friendly. Parking is always difficult in this area, but if you are patient you can usually find parking. The concept is fast casual. You order at the counter and are given a buzzer to alert you when your food is ready for pickup. The person at the counter was friendly and helpful. The menu is limited to smash burgers, a crab cake burger, fries and onions rings. The food was ok. Double Deck Burger - great bun, soft and very fresh, all the veggies were fresh, the burger lacked flavor. Seasoning while cooking would have made a big difference. It looked great, and tasted ok. French Fries- thin cut and not even warm. We returned them. They brought out fresh fries that were hot and tasty. Onion Rings - they were crisp, but barely warm. If they were hot they might have been really good. Our order was two double cheeseburgers, an order of onions rings, an order of fries and one bottle of water. The total bill was $42 before tip. Burger Deck is operated by the same people as Rubicon Deli. Rubicon has always been great. I was an expecting the same from Burger Deck. I completely understand the fast casual trend. It allows the operator to save labor cost. But when you are getting fast casual self service, and receiving mediocre food, and still paying a premium price, it's very disappointing. I had the single deck with added bacon. The burger came with all the fixings: "Creekstone Farms beef, cheddar cheese, vine ripened tomato, white onion, butter lettuce, dijonaise, house bun" (Burger Deck, 2032). The cheese burger was $9 plus an additional $3 for the bacon. It was an okay burger, but it was heavy on the dijonnaise, but I am sure mine was just regular mayonnaise. There was no hint of dijon mustard. Since they put the spread heavily on both buns, I wiped off a considerable amount of it with a napkin. I suggest they back off on putting so much sauce on the burgers so that the quality Creekstone Farms Beef patty's flavor comes through nicely. The first thing I want to taste when I bite into a quality burger is the protein, not the sauce. I want that delicious beef flavor that lingers on the palate. The beef on this burger tasted good but was a little on the dry side. The tomato and lettuce were fresh, but they forgot to put the white onion on the burger which was a bummer, and they initially forgot to put the $3 bacon on the burger too, so I had to return and ask for the bacon. Not a huge menu or big selection of beer. Highlight of the meal had to be the truffle fries: better than most that I've had. Burger patties made fresh and some were made better than others as we orders 4 burgers. Overall a decent meal, but nothing too crazy to go out of your way for. This place used to be amazing, but the quality has definitely gone down. The patty is so thin and crispy, borderline burnt. This was my experience with my last visit as well. As a smash burger, it should not be this thin, and the patty should not be crispy. You order at the kiosk, then pick a table, which don't seem to be wiped down from the looks of it, then pick up your food from the kiosk and serve your own ketchup and sauces. We were super excited to try out Burger Deck, the latest offering from the creators of Rubicon Deli, the amazing sandwich shop that sits below its new burger establishment on India Street. I'm happy to report that the food was outstanding even if the time it took to receive it was bordering on incessantly long. It was the first official night and there was a party atmosphere on the deck when we arrived. Balloons, $1 beer specials and a prize of free burgers for a year to every 50th customer were highlighted. We will probably return again to see if the service time improves. It might just be that they weren't expecting so many people - I did hear them tell someone that ordered after us that they were out of crab cakes as well. We ordered Dirty Deck burgers which come with American cheese (you can switch to Cheddar if you like), caramelized onions, onions, pickles and deck sauce (not sure what exactly is in the sauce) on a house bun which was super fluffy and fresh. For sides we ordered onion rings and fries. The burgers were delicious but we were a bit surprised they weren't hotter upon biting into them. Onion rings were super crispy and hot as were the fries. Fries are super thin and crispy which we loved. We ordered some tasty Chipotle aioli to dip the fries and rings in. The order took between 30-40 minutes to receive which, again, I attribute to opening night crowd. I'm giving them three stars for service because they were doing their best and jovial. Hoping the next time we try them it I will have a different experience that will allow me to move the stars up. Parking on India Street is always challenging but there are metered spots in the area. If it's after 6pm you don't have to pay so that's always a plus. I look forward to going back when it's not quite as busy because the simple menu and delicious food could be a big hit. read more

The Mission Hills location of Rubicon Deli has converted its upstairs deck into a walk-up counter. Burger Deck serves four preset burger combinations along with an option to build your own. The meat patty (beef sourced from Creekstone Farms) was 1/3 lb each and available as a single or double. The crab cake weighed in at four ounces while the mushroom burger used a marinated portobello variety. The buns were baked daily from the deli. Onion rings and french fries (regular, dirty, or truffle) were available as sides. After placing our order at the service counter, we sat at one of the several communal tables that were shared with the neighboring eateries. Each one had a canopy for shading. There was also a countertop with stools facing west so you could overlook the below traffic on India St. I chose the Crabby Deck which featured a house-made crab cake, tomato, red onion, butter lettuce, fresh herbs, lemon-caper tartar sauce and garlic Tabasco mayo. My friend selected a single Dirty Deck with bacon which cost an additional $3. We also split the onion rings because the kitchen had sold out of french fries. The food arrived on one tray. I think there were seven onion rings in the order. The batter was light and crispy. It was probably one of the better executed onion rings I have tasted in a while. I liked them better than my burger. The crab patty was very good, however between the tomato, the mayo, and the tartar sauce, it made the combination mushier than I desired. If I had a redo, then I would have asked for no mayo on the bun. Parking on this block was all curbside and metered until 6 pm. Customers can now get their favorite alcoholic beverage at the next door pub and then walk over to this place for burgers and fries to drink and eat on the outdoor deck. It should become a symbiotic relationship going forward, especially as word about Burger Deck starts to spread. read more

Located above rubicon deli, walk up the stairs to the right of rubicon deli. Next to Shakespeare corner shoppe. They offer 4 different burgers. Fries, truffle fries, onion rings and dirty fries basically a burger on fries instead of a bun. I ordered a single dirty deck. It came with American cheese, caramelized onions and pickles and added bacon for $3 and onion rings for $6. Burger was delicious, The bread was caramelized nicely and was juicy and fresh, they are run by Rubicon Deli so I assume its the same delicious bread that's made daily. The 1/3 pound smashed on the grill patty was delicious and juicy, all the components went well together. My only regret is that I didn't order a double! The onion rings were out of this world! Light and crispy tempura batter. You have a choice of sauce, I chose jalapeño ranch, it wasn't spicy at all but had good flavor. Highly recommend the onion rings! There's outdoor covered seating. Parking can be hard to find after dark but I came before 6 on a week day and found parking right out front. The meters are free after 6 so I just paid a little in the meters. Tip: Theres also parking on San Diego Ave, the next street over. The burger deck is run by Rubicon Deli which is my favorite sandwich shop in San Diego. Which is why I came to try out their burgers. If you like their sandwiches, you'll surely like their burgers. Theres even the Mushroom Deck if you're a vegetarian. read more

We ordered their "The Deck" burger which was topped with two smashburger patties, tomatoes, lettuce, onion and their "dijonaise" sauce. Overall, the smashburger was good. The sauce added some great flavor to the burger. We also ordered their truffle fries to share. They have a sauce station where you can get up to 4 different sauces (Ketchup, Ranch, Chipotle, and a Cilantro Lime Ranch I think?). I loved having the unlimited sauce option available. I've been to Burger Deck several times and they make a fantastic smash burger, the french fries and onion rings are on point and they have lots of drink options including micro brews and kid friendly beverages. The outdoor seating is spacious and it's a great place to grab lunch or dinner and sit outdoors. So how did it get better? Three words, chili-cheese, fries!
