Its San Diego time again! I have been to the original Hodad's in Ocean Beach, so during a staycay in the San Diego Gaslamp, I said I gotta hit up this location on Broadway. The portions are big and the quality of the food is very good. The breading and seasoning on the chicken was tasty AF. Secondarily, the burgers are 1/4 lb and a single is plenty for a normal person. Lastly, the rings were thicc and GBD. Unfortunately, we sat in traffic for 3 hrs from OC, when it normally takes 1 1/2 hrs: We were really hungry, and Hodads met our needs. Regarding the ambiance, its a bit grunge but np for me. The name has a whole lot of nostalgia in SD. The service was friendly & warm. Our food came out quickly. The only downside was the chicken & rings needed some kinda sauce, but otherwise everything else was great. Would def return the next time I am in the area.
Was walking around sea port village and my brother recommended me to eat at HoDAds. Alex the server seated us very fast and got our order taken within minutes. We ordered onion rings 4 burgers and some shakes . Definitely impressive and highly recommended. Don't miss out on their burgers definitely hit the spot and super huge. Alex made sure my family was happy and will definitely continue to come back
We didn't feel like leaving our hotel so DoorDash to the rescue. We ordered burgers only since we had a big lunch. Burgers were a good size and meat was juicy so it was all good. Our Uber driver had mentioned that Hodad's was a local favorite and it was a good recommendation.
This place used to be packed, but then again, we used to come when it was during Comic Con weekend. Today we arrived on a midweek lunch hour and there was immediate plenty of seating. Service was swift. Menu is the same but probably with higher prices. We remember that the portion sizes were on the larger side, so we decided to order small and even split some plates. We ordered the four piece chicken tenders, mini bacon cheeseburger, and the grilled chicken sandwich. To add on fries or onion rings, there is an additional charge of either $4.50 or $5.50, respectively. So prices on top of your main item can definitely get pricey. Food flavors and presentation seemed average like your standard diner type restaurant. Nothing was remarkable. Just solid.
Bacon cheeseburger was pretty good. Fries were good. Kids said chicken strips were yummy. Chocolate shake was tasty. Service was pleasant.
We grabbed a late lunch at Hodad's today. We waited a few minutes by the entrance, and we were then seated at a high-top table. Our orders were taken quickly, and large waters with lemon were brought out to us. Our burgers came out in about 7 minutes and they were just what the doctor ordered. :) My chicken burger was especially delicious, and I'd asked for extra pickles, and let's just say that the Hodad's chefs did not disappoint. There had to be at least 15 pickles on this bad boy. YUM! Onion rings were crispy and delicious. M. loved his burger and as usual, his only complaint was that he wished it was bigger. Haha. We enjoyed our food and the fun, kitschy Hodad's dining area. I feel like every time I come here, I spot something on the walls, or dangling from somewhere, that I haven't seen before. It's always a good time at Hodad's and it is certainly worth a visit if you haven't been here before. Keep in mind they do have a limited menu (burgers, chicken burgers, veggie burgers, fries, rings, shakes & some beverages and beers.) However, the table next to us ordered shakes and they looked hella good. Next time for us, for sure!! Mahalo!
My son found Hodad's when I took him and a friend down to San Diego for Comic-Con. Now, my son is a bit of a borger connoisseur, so we stopped in for lunch. The borgers were big, with thick patties, lots of fresh toppings, and came with a good size helping the sides. I opted for the onion rings, which came out as ginormous deep-fried deliciousness. My son opted for the potato wedges, which were well seasoned and had a nice crisp on them. We all enjoyed our lunch, and we also liked the vibe of the restaurant. The decor was like a surfer/skater vibe, and they sold a fair amount of swag (shirts, stickers, etc.). The service was friendly, the place was clean, and the prices were pretty typical. Their menu is mostly burgers, but they do have a couple of other options such as chicken burgers, a veggie burger, a tuna sandwich, and chicken tenders. So, if you're in the downtown San Diego area, and you're hankering for a borger, stop in and give Hodad's a try.
If you are visiting or even local to san diego most people would recommend Hodad's. I mean it's kind of hard to miss, they are even at most big venues like Petco park and the new snapdragon stadium. Upon entering this location downtown the theme gives off a rebellious punk rock theme. It also feels very old school skater vibes as well . There are many things to look at and overall it's a nice blast in the past for scenery. I ordered the bacon cheeseburger , and strawberry malt milkshake. It's a solid burger joint. The patty was cooked to perfection, very juicy and tender bite. The cheese was excellent and complimented the meal very well. You can taste the combo of the juicy patty and melty American cheese. The condiments of the onion, tomato and pickles are subtle but refreshing. The applewood bacon however ...... i wish it was not hard as a rock. Maybe skip out on the bacon and just get the cheeseburger. The fries were also a nice addition to the meal. They are your standard potato wedge fries. The strawberry milkshake was a nice addition as well. Very creamy, sweet and a nice big generous portion. If you dont end up finishing your shake you can also ask for a to go cup and you can take that monster back home with you. The service was exceptional. Staff were very friendly and food was gave out hot and ready. Overall if you're craving a good burger joint, this is the place to go too. Will definitely be coming back again.
This joint is eclectic and right next to Ocean Beach. Like the surrounding areas, it's quite a unique looking place. Represents people from everywhere with its many license plates! Food wasn't anything crazy, like the decor. Was crazy good though, if you really want to add crazy to that part of the review. The burger was cooked to perfection and full of fresh ingredients that made my tastebuds happy! The onion rings were also cooked to a nice crispy, golden brown. Don't need to order the big burger unless sharing with someone else or if you are super hungry. The small portion filled me full. Definitely recommend if in the area.!
was craving a burger and my coworker asked if i ever tried this place. I never heard of it an apparently it is a san diego staple. I read that it got more popular with out of towners and gained more visibility due to it being shown on diners drive in and dives. I waited two weeks for my burger craving to be fulfilled (work team decided to do the monthly lunch here so i could try it lol). This place did not disappoint! Firstly, its street parking. Be mindful that in the area that it is in, there's a lot of no left turns and one ways lol. Took me 20 minutes to figure out how to get to the meter parking across the street but because of the one ways and no left turns, it became an adventure lol. I looked at the front of the place and asked my fellow san diego natives, is this open?? It looked abandoned haha! But that's their gimmick apparently. Walked in to see a big place, about 8 booths, one long table. It is table service. We were seated immediately. my coworker and i split the guido burger, half size frings, and strawberry milkshake. Wow. The half sized frings is big enough to share with 3-4 people. The onion rings sold me. So crisp and the onions were sweet. Potato wedges were good too but the star was the onion rings. Glad we split the burger because even half size it was huge. Very delicious! Milkshake was a huge portion and was yummy and Balanced the salty from the burger. They told me to check the location by the beach to get the true experience. the food is filling and it ended up being my only meal of the day. Staff were very nice. they do have high chairs as well for the little ones. definitely will come back.
It was our first time in San Diego last week, and we were told that we had to visit Hodad's. We chose the downtown location, and headed there straight from the airport. It was 2:30 on a Thursday, and it was super easy to find parking right around the corner at a meter. When we walked in, we were blown away by the ambience! License plates, stickers, and other fun art all over the walls and booths. There was a ton of seating, and we were greeted right away. We placed our orders within five minutes, and received our food really quickly. The burgers were giant, and the fries portions were huge. Half-price beer and milkshakes every day from 2 to 6? How can you beat that?! They brew their own beer, and the four we tried were really good. The milkshakes were humongous! The looks on my kids' faces when they brought them out to the table were priceless. Needless to say, we had to get some to-go cups because they could barely even finish half. Great service, delicious, messy burgers, good beer, and great shakes. What's not to love?!
Stopped in here for a dinner before attending a nearby show at the House Of Blues. Hodad's is perfectly within walking distance of House of Blues, so I highly recommend coming in for a burger next time you're pre-gaming for a show. This whole place is fun to look at, with funny license plates, surf boards, and the walls covered in Hodad's stickers. The music is vibing and not too loud to carry on a conversation, with a mixture of punk, rock, punk rock, and metal. There's ample seating with a bus booth (probably seats 3ish comfortably, 7 four top booths, one long picnic table with 8 seating benches that would sit two comfortably on each bench, and 4 high top tables. There was a basketball game playing on their three tvs for those that love a bit of sports with their meals. Our server Anson was the highlight of the meal other than the food. He has this confident calm demeanor with a seriously wicked smile and he was so nice and patient, giving us some great recommendations! We opted to try the Guido burger as it's mentioned it was inspired by Guy Fieri, and basket of frings. The fries are those amazing thick wedge fries and were so perfectly seasoned and the rings and fries were so perfectly crispy and hot. Definitely fresh made. The Guido burger was juicy, flavorful, and everything you would want in a burger. Can't wait to come back soon next time I'm seeing a show at HOB or just for a fun night out.
If you're in the mood for a burger, this is the place to go. The mini burgers come in at a sixth of a pound, while the singles are a third of a pound, and they definitely don't skimp on toppings. Expect a burger stacked high and overflowing in the best way. The bacon is more like a thick patty than traditional strips, which was a pleasant surprise. The fries were soft and almost mashed-potato-like in texture, but the onion rings were the real standout. They were easily the star of the meal. Service was excellent as well. Our waiter was friendly, attentive, and helpful with recommendations, which made the experience even better.
I was craving ice cream and d came to Hodads since they serve the best old style shakes ever. As you can see from pictures of my last review they serve amazing burgers. All of mine are super sized so they might look a bit messy. What's good about their bacon, is you don't just get a couple pieces that can fall out of the burger. At Hodads they make a bacon patty like the burger patty so you get bacon in every bite. They also have some amazing onion rings. read more

I used to have hodads back in college, this place seems pretty different now as an adult. The burger was lacking in flavor and juices, I wish it were a bit greasier . What stands out is the sides and how much of it they give. As an adult I don't get as much so I went with the half order of their fries and onion rings, boy is it a lot still. My taste buds have changed a lot since college it would seem, I think their food tastes average and the value of the burger isn't up there but the sides are massive. Hodads will always be a SD gem, I'm just not young anymore. Cheers. read more

We have been going to Hodad's for years and never had Issues when order, until recently. We asked for side order of fry's and onion rings, didn't know " you have to say "Basket" if you don't they will give you a few fries and onion rings and still charge you for a full basket. Now you have to say "Basket" Especially the one on Broadway. I starting to understand why this place is always empty. read more

With a line down the block at the OB location (always!), we stopped into this location after a Padres win, to see what the fuss was about. I'd rate this spot a solid 3.5. Here's why: STAR#1: Location is easy to find amidst the buildings of downtown and wasn't all that crowded. The interior is a smattering of old license plates, meets fun graffiti and an old bus sits in the corner - that anyone can dine in! The vibe is surfer meets metal (as that was blasting throughout the space) and we felt right at home. STAR #2: The menu is small but mighty - in the sense that it offers all that it excels at making! We opted for the little bacon cheeseburgers with one side of fries and the other, onion rings. Our burgers came out about 15 minutes later, piled hiiiiiiiiiigh with fixings (lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, mayo, ketchup and mustard) which made it hard to see our little burger patty. Lesson learned - order the regular sized burger if you're looking for a more meat taste. The burgers were fresh, delicious and huge - despite being "little". Solid burger! The wedge fries were a nice touch, lump and aplenty. The onion rings were perfectly fried, not heavily breaded and SO good as well! YUM! STAR #3: Pricing is decent for these massive babies in that it was under $40 for two - yay! Worth it! I'll knock 2 stars off for the following: Service. I hate to say it, but this location was massively understaffed. We were greeted right away, but with the dirty tables, it took a bit to clean the space for us to be seated. Our server was friendly but also taking care of the entire dining space and pouring drinks behind the bar. A few others came in and out - bussing tables, saying hello and giving refills, but the overall vibe was kind of chaotic in that everyone was doing everything for every table. BAH. Cleanliness. When we entered, tables were strewn with dirty baskets, napkins and just overall unkept. The floors were sticky; the bathrooms were messy with an overflowing trash can and I got the overall impression of yikes. Otherwise, I'd return to this spot for a burger again! read more

I arrived for a pretty late lunch since I was in the area for a conference and have been meaning to try out Hodads. I came around 3 PM on a Monday and there was no one else in the shop but me which meant I got super quick service. I opted for the single cheeseburger with onion rings and a Dr. Pepper. The burger was pretty good and the onion rings were amazing. It was definitely worth the 20 minute walk that it took to get there. I'd go back in the future just for the onion rings alone! The best part is that they give you 2 stickers at the end of your meal! I'm pretty sure you're supposed to stick the stickers on the walls of the establishment somewhere but I wanted to take mine. read more
What can I say? HUMONGOUS chocolate shake! Egads, enormous burgers, piles of fries or onion rings anyone? Popular and full of eager eaters waiting for a table in this very small and well known eatery, this is a must try if you are into any of those items I mentioned. love this place. might be our favorite burger place in san diego! we got the mini cheeseburger with fries and the chili burger. both were delicious in their own way. the fries are great wedge fries with a good crunch and flavoring on the outside but soft and pillowy on the inside. we also got a vanilla shake that was huge. after drink half we brought home the rest which filled up their whole to go cup! there was plenty of seating when we went and the staff was super attentive and brought out our food fast. read more

Bf and I wanted to try this burger spot after seeing 3.k reviews, it was an absolutely excellent decision, we enjoyed our meal very much!! The ambiance is wonderful; different mix of music playing, from alternative to rock to indie and even 2000's. The service was excellent, there was a single server working and I was very impressed! The food was absolutely delicious, especially the ranch, I need their ranch recipe!! I highly Recommend trying Hodad's read more

Burger was exactly what I was craving, patty was well made and the request for extra pickles didn't disappoint. Fries are not my preferred, I would rather have basic simple thick fries but that's just a preference, still ate them all. 10/10 Service was pleasant and quick, big plus. Ambiance was very positive A lot going on with the decorations but everything is neat and clean, felt at ease. read more

Visited here for lunch shortly after they opened. Sat in a booth and enjoyed the eclectic decor. There was a picture of a cute doggie on the wall next to our booth. Our server was friendly, helpful and speedy. I ordered the bluejay burger and a chocolate malt. It's been awhile since my last visit and I had forgotten just how big the burgers are. Not necessarily the patty; just the whole girth of it when you include all of the options for toppings. I enjoyed the blue cheese sauce, bacon, grilled onions along with lettuce, tomato and pickles. My chocolate malt was superb. I needed a to go cup and container when we left as I could not finish my meal. Things to note: They offer their own brand of beer with numerous choices. Several televisions are propped up on the wall. A softball game was on when we visited. They have many different t-shirt designs and one hoodie design. We saw that this place was listed as a recommended place by Food Network. Although it was hard to find parking and expensive to park in a parking lot, this place was definitely worth the trip. The ambience of the place was fun and the workers were casual. Our server was great. I ordered a single burger and my fiancé ordered a double with bacon both burgers or massive. We also ordered onion rings. It goes without saying it took us forever to make our way through our burgers, but we had so much fun doing it and trying the different beers on tab. Hodad's is an American burger restaurant that has been around for quite sometime in San Diego, CA. I've been to the location in OB, but I decided to try this location on Broadway for the first time and unfortunately, it was okay at best. The restaurant itself is located on a corner in the city of San Diego and for it being a Saturday night, it wasn't that busy at all. Parking is kind of hard to find, but there are paid lots nearby to park in. The restaurant had a nice atmosphere of being that "beach" vibe and felt very welcoming. Everything seemed pretty cleaned and well-maintained, but I do wish the bathrooms were kept more clean. The service was great. The workers were nice, professional, and had a positive attitude. Our waiter didn't do his full job however and we found ourselves being assisted by another waiter throughout most of our stay. The restaurant wasn't busy either, but it wasn't that big of a deal. I ordered the Blue Jay burger with a side of fries and onion rings. Everything came out pretty fast which is sometimes a bad sign. The burger itself, as shown in the photos, was smothered in blue cheese. I'm a fan of blue cheese but that is all I tasted when eating the burger. I asked for medium rare and the patty was medium rare. The patty itself lacked seasoning and just tasted like straight beef. The other additions of the burger such as the bacon, onions, tomatoes, lettuce, and more were just shadowed by the sheer amount of blue cheese. The entire burger itself was very greasy and I had to down the burger fast to avoid it all from just falling apart. I realized this only happened to my burger, probably because it had more in it than the classic burger options; however, if the restaurant can't properly serve a burger other than their classics, then they should reconsider serving it all. Then again, it could've just been an off day. My party ordered the classic burgers and theirs came out fine and they enjoyed their meals. The fries, more like wedges, were not that appetizing since they were obviously frozen wedges that you can get at deli from Albertsons or Stater Bros. The wedges had good seasoning and weren't dried out on the inside. The onion rings were not the best I've had and were obviously frozen prior to being served. The batter was dry and thin. The onion ring itself lacked flavor and the onion on the inside was dry. I had to rely on the ranch and BBQ sauce to help out. Overall, I probably won't come back to this location again or even any Hodad's location for a while. For the limited options on their menu and for what you get, the price is absurd. I would recommend going to In N Out for the same, if not better quality, for a much cheaper price. To my knowledge, no military nor first responder discounts offered. read more
I got the Guido burger, and it was for what it was. In all honesty it was nothing special. Wish burger came with fries. Meat patty itself was a decent size. Located in downtown, east village. Street parking. Smells like urine outside and inside of the establishment. Tried the Guido burger and fries. Big portions. Service is mid. Instead of raising their prices due to inflation, they add it as a 3% service charge. read more

First hodads experience after the padres game this afternoon, was able to walk in and get seated quickly and had someone come take our order Once the food came out we were ready to indulge, the burgers were massive but looked super good and packed with all the toppings, the half order of frings was piled high and were brought out with two big sides of ranch The burger was super flavorful, bacon was crispy all the toppings really worked together with the sauces and burger, the onion rings were easily some of the best ive had and I really enjoyed the seasoned potato wedges! Only downside was the lack of server check in, while I typically enjoy being left alone during a meal one check in is always appreciated for refills as we did run out of water early into the meal read more
Burger.Goodness. Hello San Diego! This spot is pretty unique and a must try for HUGE burgers that hit different. I tried the Blue Jay burger - if you are a blue cheese LOVER then this is a must try. Full of flavor with blue cheese spread and grilled onions and the HUGE helping of "bacon" is mouth watering. All of the burgers come fully loaded so before you order make sure to read what that means. Mine I did all except tomatoes and enjoyed it...I will not the size of these burgers are NO joke. Honestly, I would recommend asking for the Blue Jay in the mini size...seriously the regular is bigger than what most would want to eat. Definitely get this side basket of onion rings. These things are amazing!! The size are crazy and literally two people can share the basket of onion rings. Make sure to get a side of ranch. We also ordered a single cheeseburger all the way no tomato and the server alerted us to how BIG the burgers were as we were going to order doubles, ordered singles and probably should've got a mini on that as well but well worth it! read more
We enjoyed a delicious hamburger at Hodad's Downtown San Diego. This was my first time at this location we usually go to Hodad's in Ocean Beach. I highly recommend the Guido Burger inspired by triple G's Guy Fieri. The burger is served with pastrami, pickles, Swiss cheese, grilled onions and spicy brown mustard. I ordered a small side of French fries. This burger was outstanding 5/5 stars!! My friend ordered the double cheeseburger with bacon and also gave it 5/5!! This burger joint is on Broadway on 10th street near the City College Trolley station. The service was great and restaurant was fully decorated with stickers, surfboards, and license plates decor like Hodad's in OB. Check it out when in the area! Happy Yelping :) read more

Great juicy messy burgers but that is the way it should be. Got the Guido burger and fries and it did not disappoint. Went to the Ocean Beach location and it's not easy to park there. BUT worth the effort to go and enjoy the food there. read more

Where is the best place to park at the Downtown location?
The best place to park for Hodads downtown is the parking lot on the southwest corner of 11th ave and broadway, just around the block from the restaurant.
Can you dine in?
Right now, Yes. We do have indoor dining at our Downtown San Diego location. This could change if the County goes to the more restrictive Purple tier in the coming weeks
Do the bacon burgers still come with a patty of bacon or is it in strips now?
They still come with bacon patties.
When are the least busy times to go?
Weekdays M-Th opening and mid day after lunch. Depends on what's going on in DT. Or gloomy days!
Do they have gluten-free options, like gluten-free buns or lettuce-wrapped burgers? I'm assuming that the fries are cooked in the same fryer as the onion rings and therefore aren't gluten-free?

They do offer high chairs, but the place tends to be loud.... my guess is it's fine with kids/toddlers, but would depend on parent preferences :)
