I've passed by Chicken Over Rice numerous times and never thought much of this unassuming shop with a simple menu. But, I'd started to hear about it and didn't realize this storefront was once a OB Farmers Market staple! They've got one thing on the menu. You guessed it, Chicken Over Rice. You choose your base of rice, greens or pita. They have spicy or regular chickpeas and chicken. Then, you pick your toppings like pickled onions, pepperoncinis, lettuce and sauces. Simple but super flavorful! Everything is well seasoned and it's got that nice dankness to the bowl, while still remaining refreshing. The bowl runs around $17 so not cheap, but given how large the portion is, it's a good deal. Can easily make for about 1.5 meals! read more

I'm a big fan of assembly line style quick and easy meals such as chipotle and cava so I knew I had to check out Chicken Over Rice. The overall cuisine is closer to Mediterranean not so much Mexican flavors. They are a no frills shop as they only offer chicken in 3 different flavors. The food itself tastes great, very fresh and clean ingredients. Overall, a satisfying and healthy meal for me. Street parking is abundant and they have seating inside. I'll have to knock down the rating 1 star just because compared to CAVA and chipotle the options here are quite limited (chicken being the only protein) which is completely fine if you just want chicken. Also I think $17 is quite the hefty price for one bowl HOWEVER, they do really give bigger portions here so at least that makes me feel better about spending almost $20 on a bowl. This is located in Ocean beach, a neighborhood in San Diego that doesn't have too many options so this will be the best next thing to getting chipotle and cava. I think if I lived here I would come quite often but not worth it in my opinion to drive all the way here. read more

Ordered food delivered about 1.5mi from restaurant- food arrived hot. Our first time trying the brick-n-mortar location and the food was even better than we expected. My Filipina wife said the rice was cooked spot-on, the veggie/garbanzo salad was fresh and excellent, the chicken version was tasty too. The spices they use (it is Mediterranean food) were balanced. Chicken Over Rice is a simple yet delicious choice. The set up gives me chipotle meets poke vibes. Where you pick the style (rice, salad, or pita) and whatever you do not want on the bowl. They have options between spicy chickpeas and spicy chicken or regular chickpeas and regular chicken. I chose to get spicy chickpeas and regular chicken (def recommend!) I was a little apprehensive about the chickpeas at first, but it was very good. The accoutrements are also bomb! There's a mint/cucumber moment you definitely should not skip out on. The service was great! Although the menu is pretty straightforward, the gentleman's did a great job of explaining the process and what our options were. There is street parking, but there's also a parking lot in the back, which is a great option. Most of the tables inside are high top, but there are several outside that are a little bit lower. I absolutely love this place! The food is really delicious, consistent good quality and the portions are perfect. I can see they also use Olive Oil for grilling the chicken which I LOVE because it is actually a healthy oil to use. The staff are really lovely as well. My only issue is that the price is a little too high. If the price of the bowl was around $12-13 I would go eat there many more times a week but at $16 it is difficult to eat more than once or twice a week. A Filipino restaurant used to occupy this suite on Sunset Cliffs Blvd in OB which is now the home of Chicken Over Rice. The set of businesses at this address has a shared dedicated parking lot behind the structure with over a dozen spaces available. The inside of the suite had only a few tables and a countertop with stools near the front window for seating. The menu was as simple as I had seen for a brick-and-mortar eatery. It was a Mediterranean-style bowl with a base of rice, pita, or salad for $15. The included toppings were chicken, chickpeas, lettuce, onion, parsley, cucumber salsa, and pepperoncini. You could order some of the ingredients as a la carte sides. Soda and water were the available drinks. My bowl had rice as the base while I asked for the three sauces (garlic, hot, tzatziki) in small cups instead of being mixed in. The order was quickly prepared and placed in a takeout paper bag. I ended up using just the garlic and tzatziki sauces to enhance the flavor of the bowl. The cucumber salsa had a unique taste while the rest was fairly standard. I don't know if you could order a veggie version for a lesser price, but then why come here when their focus is on chicken as the main ingredient? read more
