Visit date: July 29, 8pm. Came to OB for the Farmer's Market and drum circle and wanted to try something new to eat. I saw an Egyptian food stall with people lined up to order and waiting for their meal. I waited in line for five minutes and decided to find something else. My hunger needed to be quelled soon as evidenced of a growling stomach. Just a couple minutes of walking along Newport and I stumbled upon Shawarma House. I wasn't sure if they were still open but Mathios- the gentleman at the register assured me they are with one condition...I have to eat at the available tables outside which was fine with me. The photo of the Falafel Plate looks like it could satisfy my burgeoning hunger so that, I picked. Situated myself on the street side table with two chairs and faced myself towards the crowds leaving the Farmer's Market. Soon after, out came Sam, the proprietor holding a huge plate of Mediterranean rice, falafel and hummus and a smaller plate of pita bread and spicy sauce. I was overwhelmed at the sight of this meal and doubted my ability to finish every bite. I was able to eat less than half and promised myself I would work on the rest tomorrow. The next day, it was still too much for me to completely devour! This would be a perfect single dish for two people! What an awesome place. Quaint but welcoming, the staff is very friendly and they keep things simple inside. I got the combo plate and it is definitely a hearty portion. Everyone has described the different components so I'll forgo that bit, but the best part is the flavor of every individual bite. The rice underneath is the perfect vehicle for carrying the flavors. The plating is a beautifully arranged personal buffet of succulence. Each accompaniment pairs with the protein of choice and the laffa acts as nice little scoop. Great place for a meat eater to take his vegetarian date for a meal! You can order Spacedust draft IPA in a mug and sit and people watch or take your food to go and walk 2 blocks to the beach. I'm very disappointed with this experience. I ordered the complimentary Gyro Pita through Yelp Elite, and I ordered the Beef Kebab Plate too that I paid $26. I was really excited to try it, but the meat tasted old, and there was a funky smell to it I ended up throwing all of it away after having one bite that I spit out too. We came here late on a Sunday night. I was afraid I would be too late to be served as they were closing in about 20 mins. However they still let me order. I got the falafel pita wrap as I don't eat meat so it was awesome they had some vegetarian options. Now I am not a big fan of Mediterranean food so I wasn't expecting much. When I got my wrap the first thing I noticed was how fresh it was. Everything was just made. This wrap was HUGE! I had to split it with my husband! The falafel was delicious, the veggies inside were fresh, and the pita was perfectly grilled. Its pretty small inside so I think most order to go, but you definitely can eat there as well. The owner (I'm assuming) was super kind, even gave me a free extra sauce to try. The woman and the front that took my order was ok, not the most enthusiastic but helped me decide what to get. We started off with sharing appetizers Dolma (stuff grape leafs), beef egg rolls, and hummus. My favorite was the egg roll. My buddy got the kabob plate which was beef skewer. I love this little spot in Ocean Beach! They've got a great little bar that overlooks Newport Avenue and you can watch all the folks walking by. Sometimes that can be quite a show lol. Both times I've been here I've gotten the chicken Shawarma wrap with the lemon garlic dressing. It is absolutely divine in every way. I was in downtown San Diego for business, I looked up Greek food in my area, this place was 20 minutes out of the way, but had by far the best ratings and reviews. When I stopped in, I immediately loved the vibe. They are extremely friendly and helpful, I got the beef Shawarma plate, which I give 9.8/10, for the price you get a generous helping a protein, with delicious rice. Not overcooked. With the plate comes hummus with pita. For this restaurant being open for less than a year, I suspect they will get well over 1000 reviews and maintain their 4.8 stars, due to the great service they provide, quality ingredients and prime location they are in they are a must see when in Ocean Beach. Shawarma House is located on Newport Ave in Ocean Beach/OB and had opened over a month ago. Limited street parking and private parking lots close by. Yesterday, while out in OB, my friend and I saw Shawarma House and decided to try their lunch. Most indoor seating were taken as there was a large group of military people having lunch. Luckily there were a few tables and seats outside with an umbrella shade for us to enjoy the OB sunshine. The cashier staff named Mais was cordial, helpful and nice. She explained some of the items on the menu, which was mostly Mediterranean selections. I like Mediterranean food and glad this place was new and clean. For my dining friend the Beef Shawarma plate which has the sliced marinated beef, yellow saffron rice, salad, hummus and pita. For myself, the Greek salad, with added Falafel. And of course french fries to share. The food looked appealing, presented nicely, generous portions too; we should have just ordered one dish. We were hungry and ate some of our lunches but couldn't finish it all and had most of it boxed togo. I like Mediterranean food and the food here was ok but just not the best I've had. I tried some of the beef shawarma and it had a taste of lamb, which I'm not a fan of. A big fan of lamb is a furbaby, and she liked it. Perhaps a beef kabob would taste more like beef and not taste any hint of lamb...? The saffron rice tasted bland just like the hummus. The pita bread was not fluffy but rather flat. Fries lacked sea salt seasoning. Upon cutting a falafel ball, it was mostly chickpea and not green inside, which lacked parsley herb. My fav was the Greek salad which was enough to feed four, had a medley of cherry tomatoes, sliced cucumber, slivered red onions, pitted black olive and sprinkled feta cheese with oil and vinegar dressing. This salad was great but would have liked for more feta cheese and perhaps serve it in a nice thick chunk, as it's usually done. The owner was nice and did come out to check if all was satisfactory, we wanted to be reciprocally nice and said everything was ok. If you're not as particular with seasoning and flavors as I am and want Hugh portions of Mediterranean food in the very casual area of sunny Ocean Beach, try Shawarma House. read more
