Sad. Sad. Picked up an order about a week ago, and if things don't change back to the old Buns, sad to say, we won't be back. A child's grilled cheese is up to $7? For cruddy American cheese, one bun and 3oz of fries? I weighed. That, like, almost no fries. Really? Kids meals should make parents want to come there, but this price to food ratio is now a major deterrent. We've been driving past Al's for years to get to Buns, but now I guess we will just go to Al's. When the owners changed, quality did take a dive. Sometimes our burgers are too burned to eat . . . And portions have been cut down by at least 75% in the kids meal. So disappointing. For the record I tried to email this to Buns directly, but, like, their email inbox is full so it bounced back. For the low, low price of $4.50 you get a one-patty burger and a pretty extensive choice of free toppings (including some less-expected options like pepperjack cheese, wasabi mayo, and jalapenos). They also had two burgers on special, one of which was a tasty-sounding Cajun variety with andouille sausage. I stuck with the basics and was rewarded with a juicy burger...cheddar, dijon, lettuce, tomato, on a wheat bun and hold the ketchup, thanks much. No qualms with the burger. And my single side of regular cheese fries was a whopping portion (definitely splittable), but it was a sad pile topped with liquidy cheese. Definitely a let-down following my very recent indulgence of Raleigh-Times cheese fries (which are perfection). But I think Buns is a terrific late-night option and a pretty good spot for lunch too. This is a great joint in downtown Chapel Hill. The restaurant has a modest décor - it has a counter for singles, some high chair tables, and some booths. For those who are new: order at the front, get a number, and then sit and wait for yummys to arrive. The cashier (maybe he was the owner) was extremely friendly and patient as I fumbled through the menu. He offered to give me fries with half sweet potato and half regular, his suggestion. He also waited as I pondered over which dip to get for my fries. The fries - This is probably the biggest basket of fries I have ever gotten in my life. Can anyone eat all of these fries by themselves? They were crisp on the outside, tender inside. They were not over fried and not salted heavily. The honey mustard dip was sweet and tangy. The dip went well with the sweet potato fries. I asked for cheese on the side and they gave me 2 cups of cheese! The cheese went well with the regular fries. The burger - Goat cheese with balsamic reduction, mushroom, tomatoes, and a turkey patty = DELICIOUS and light. The vinegar and goat cheese added something different to the boring old burger combination. I didn't really taste the goat cheese, but my friend, who doesn't like cheese says that he could. So, I think that the goat cheese is light enough so that it is not distracting. The mushrooms were so soft. The turkey pulled all the ingredients together. Oh how I've missed this place! Buns was one of my favorite places to eat out on Franklin St. when I was in college and it is still as delicious as ever. So when we decided to head up to Chapel Hill to watch the NCAA tournament at the bars with our fellow Tarheels, I immediately knew Buns is what I wanted for dinner. During my most recent visit, I ordered the Goat Cheese Burger. I love the richness and creaminess of the goat cheese contrasted with the balsamic reduction. I also added on some grilled mushrooms, caramelized onions and lettuce. The burger was juicy and satisfied my Buns craving. Don't feel like you need to order the double or triple patty burger, because the single patty is plenty big! And you CANNOT come to Buns without ordering fries. We ordered a regular basket of fries, with half regular fries and half sweet potato fries. It is the perfect amount to share for 2 people and you are not going to find better fries in Chapel Hill. The dragon sauce is my favorite dipping sauce for the fries, which I think might be a mixture of mayo and sriracha sauce. There are so many restaurants on Franklin St. that have come and gone, and hopefully Buns will not fall into that trend. Excellent spot for a burger and fries on the corner of Franklin and Columbia right off UNC campus. They've got a generous array of free toppings, many of which you'd be forced to pay extra for elsewhere, including a number of cheeses, caramelized onions, cole slaw, and grilled mushrooms. The prices for the burgers themselves are fairly reasonable, at $5 for a single or $7 for a double. Add fries and a drink for another $3.50 to make for a filling lunch around $10. I think the real star here are the dipping sauces for the fries. I've tried the dragon sauce, which is similar to a sriracha mayo, curry mustard that amazingly replicates that Indian flavor in an appropriate fry dip profile, and chipotle mayo, a solid take on the tasty classic. You get your choice of regular or sweet potato fries that come in freakishly gigantic portion sizes and taste incredibly freshly made. But to be honest, I could just as easily dip these things with celery, where I can get all the tasty goodness of the sauces and save a few calories. They would taste good on just about anything. The burgers are great as well, although I wouldn't say the best I've ever had. Not really a knock though, cause the burgers are definitely delicious. I also have to give a shout out to the employees. Pretty friendly and accomodating. My gf decided after the fact that she wished she had asked for coleslaw on her burger and when she went to the register, they filled up an 8 oz. cup to the top with slaw. While there's plenty of solid choices on Franklin St. for lunch, I find myself turning to Buns time and again when I'm in the mood for some meaty goodness. read more

I got a double burger with pepper jack, slaw, pickles, caramelized onion, ketchup, and mustard on a wheat bun, plus fries and a drink for a little more than $9.00. Be sure to try all the dipping sauces as well, since they're free. I chose the curry mayo, but the super friendly owner kept suggesting I get the chipotle mayo as well, so I ended up with both. The thing you need to know about this place is while they have a zillion toppings for your burger is also that they have truly amazing VEGGIE burgers also. They're larger than any patty you'll be pulling out of the freezer and have a lot going on with the veggies. You won't feel like you've got a scrawny little veggie burger while your friends get a gratifyingly sized "real" burger, which is very nice. The second thing you most definitely need to know is they give you a metric ton of your choice of (sweet potato or regular, perfectly salted) fries as a "side". By this i mean enough to feed a family of 4 fries for dinner. So unless you REALLY want a lot of delicious fries, or have office mates, roommates willing to help you out, or just have buckets of self control...just know this going into the place. read more

There are so many times when reading reviews on Yelp come in so handy! One recent time was last Saturday when Husband & I found ourselves in Chapel Hill for a fascinating cemetery tour. Before heading for the cemetery, we were walking around and happened upon Buns. Instantly, my brain went to Yelp-memory-mode and I said...hey, this place gets really good reviews! Having had a fairly large lunch earlier in Raleigh, we decided to share a burger and fries. When you walk in this small place, there are suggested burgers on the board. Or you can create your own. We went with the pimiento cheese jalapeno one. (beef) With regular fries and dragon sauce. (a double cause we were sharing). We asked that it be cut in half, added an extra fountain drink to the order...then found a seat in the main room to await our Yelp fate. I will say, we had to remind ourselves that good things come to those that wait, because it did take awhile. This is not fast food. It's food that is cooked to order, and well worth the wait! They did not ask how we wanted our burger cooked, and pretty well-done it was, but that was okay with us. We were both impressed with the fact that they weren't afraid of flavor here. Burger was nicely salted and peppered. We both agreed that it might be the first pimiento cheese burger we've ever had where we could actually taste the cheese! (even with tomato, lettuce & onion)....really really good! And the fries? Perfect! Not just a few of them, but ALL of them...crispy! Dunked in the slightly sweet/slightly spicy dragon sauce? YUM! Buns is tasty tasty. I love their burgers, I love their veggie burgers, I love their hot dogs. I love that I can put anything I want on any of those. Caramelized onions, chipotle or wasabi mayo, pepper jack cheese or cheddar or swiss, chili.... You can make your burger or hot dog anyway you like. Delicious veggie burger with bacon? Go for it! (Yes... I'm weird) The only thing I'm not a huge fan of is their fries... however I'll munch on them with chili and cheese, can't go wrong there, or with another sauce. And I know most people love their fries, I'm just weird about them. I do like their sweet potato fries however. The place is a little small, which others have mentioned, but they deliver and it's really worth it to wait a bit for a table. The people you order from will keep you highly amused while waiting and ordering. Buns is great if you want delicious tasty burgers or dogs. I was derping one day in Chapel Hill and knew I had to give the famous Buns a try. But where in the world do I park? I decided to chance it in a neighborhood because I'm totally hard like that. I strongly considered the Bison Burger special before settling on a double stack. Buns has a ton of toppings available, most of them free. I can't believe my cheese didn't cost extra. I picked pepper jack, chipotle mayo, lettuce, caramelized onions, mushrooms (yes, free! finally!!), jalapenos, and bacon. Add fries and a drink for $3.75 more, and yes, they serve Cheerwine here. The food came out in a timely fashion, and I was absolutely delighted with the size of the burger. I was used to trendy burger places ripping me off with patty size *ehem* BurgerFi *ehem* but these patties are very big. A double stack is enough for big appetites such as my own and the great Romin B's, so believe me when I say that a double stack combo should be enough to fill you up. In addition to the size, I was delighted by the taste of the patties. Too many places don't pay enough attention to their patties, preferring to let the toppings make the burger. Buns recognizes that a good patty is the foundation of a good burger, and I think I am in love. 5 stars. Though I downed my burger very quickly, because even tough guys like me are afraid of tow trucks, I still enjoyed every minute. Having free parking would've made this place too good to be true. Buns is an awesome and fast burger place if you are on Franklin Street. As I do with most of my Chapel Hill reviews, I'll go ahead and tell you that nostalgia may play a role in my experiences and feelings towards this place. Buns is not a big place and a lot of people just get their orders to go. You order up at the counter and they give you a number that you can go sit down with. They bring your food right out to you, which is normally a quick process. The workers there are always friendly and willing to make suggestions. Just about everything is customizable. You pick your meat: Beef, Turkey, Veggie, or Grilled Chicken. You can choose between a white, wheat or brioche bun. They have a number of cheese, sauce, and various other toppings options. You can keep it as simple or get as crazy as you want. They also have some signature items if you're feeling indecisive, and each day they have a burger special of the day. I normally go with the jalapeño pimento cheese burger or some variation of those ingredients. The burgers are juicy and the toppings are always fresh. Their portion sizes are huge and this includes the fries. I always go with the sweet potato fries. These are seriously some of the best around. I also always get wasabi mayo and chipotle mayo to dip the fries in. I know this sounds odd, but trust me, it's delicious. They also have Cheerwine in their drink machines which is always an added bonus. I would highly recommend Buns if you are craving a burger on Franklin Street. It is a great place to head after a game. I can't emphasize the sweet potato fries and dipping sauces enough. Buns is one of my favorites in Chapel Hill. read more

Had lunch here with some awesome friends from Chapel Hill. The ordering process was cool, choose from the menu or build your own burger. I chose to keep it simple.. single patty angus on white bread with mustard, ketchup, chipotle mayo, lettuce, tomato, onion. Fries. Dragon sauce, honey mustard. The guy who took our order was super nice and friendly. Didn't take long to get our food for a table of 4. I was surprised to see a HUGE basket of fries with my burger. The dipping sauces I tried were awesome, I became a fan of the dragon sauce immediately (it's a little spicy). The burger was, well, the reason for the 3 star review instead of 4. It was a little dry, overcooked, and just didn't taste all that great. Nothing special about the bun either. I was a little disappointed, especially at $10 for the meal. The fries and awesome dipping sauces really saved the experience. We also were able to sit there for over an hour without feeling like we were in the way or bothersome. Being vegetarian, I'm not a huge burger fan (obviously) but came here to try the veggie burger with a few meat-loving friends. I must say, the veggie burger was absolutely DELICIOUS! I recommend it even for people who can eat meat. The veggie patty itself is vegan and has such a wide variety of vegetables. It's topped with such fresh ingredients - alfalfa sprouts, avocado, lettuce, tomato, cucumbers - all sandwiched by fluffy buns made in house. The sauce could have been a little more flavorful, but it didn't detract from the burger overall. The portions are extremely generous as well, making the visit here very affordable and satisfying. I've heard the dipping sauces are really good. The barbecue sauce is tangy and a perfect topping for the fries here. If you want even more bang for your buck, ask for your fries to go, because the to go box is huge and gives you more than the dine-in portion. Buns serves some pretty good burgers. Although it's a bit pricey for a burger and fries, I've never spent over $11, and I've never been able to finish a meal at Buns without being full either, so in the end, I think it's a worthy deal. The burgers are highly customizable with a variety of bread types, vegetables, and condiments to choose from, and overall, the taste is good. Personally, I think that the texture of the buns feels a little bit hard to chew sometimes, but that's a minor issue. What makes Buns unique for me, though, are the delicious fries and the dipping sauce that comes with them. A side of regular fries and the tangy, addictive Dragon Sauce (my favorite) is inevitable if I'm going to Buns. This was a take out order, so it wasn't fresh off the grill yet, it was still a decent burger and fries. I appreciate the huge array of choices they have, and that you can still add extra stuff (for a price). It was not cooked medium as I asked though, so I thought it was over-cooked. The meat tasted okay, but wasn't great like some places I've had. I ordered the gluten free bun, and it fell apart while I was eating the burger. The fries were abundant and were really good - and I'm sure would be even better had we not had it to go. The honey mustard was good, it was more of the spicy (very mild though) rather than the sweet kind that I like. I might give them another try, but there are several other burger places that I really like so maybe not. There can never be too many burger places to choose from so carry on Buns. read more
