My wife, daughter and I finished a brief mini tour at UNC Chapel Hill and we're looking for a quick bite before heading home. The students in the Visitors Office recommended Buns, so away we went. Juicy, well seasoned with plenty of flavor...everything is made to order...I ordered the Jalapeño Pimento Burger...It comes with bacon and your choice of cheese (in addition to the pimento cheese spread)...not a fan of the pimento so I had them hold it...also has sautéed jalapeños...lettuce, tomato and their spicy mayo sauce or whatever it is. All of the ingredients came together well...the bun was soft and toasted (a bonus)...I recommend if you're with 2 or more people, order the basket of fries with cheese sauce...we'll worth it...fries are fresh cut with the skin on...makes for a heartier taste IMO...everything tasted good! The simplest choice at Buns is for the buns (white or wheat) itself but after that it gets a bit complicated in a good way. Choose from three different patty types and sizes along with twenty free toppings and seven premium toppings. You've got two different types of fries, two fry sizes and eight dipping sauces. Throw in some specialty burgers, hot dogs, drink options and there must be a bazillion lunch combos to eat here... Service was quick and friendly at the counter and the dining room cheerfully decorated. Self-service your drinks and napkins, grab a seat and hang loose for a bit. The burgers are decently sized, my cajun with andouille sauce was really filling. What really shined was the plateful of sweet potato fries that I paired up with Thai sesame sauce, dee-licious! Gosh knows I loves me some ketchup but that would be BORING at Buns. Probably not the best burger I've ever had but love those sauces and all the choices. Buns is a wonderful little spot for a quick and inexpensive meal in Chapel Hill. Tricking out your burger just the way you want is a great idea. This is trendy, colorfully decorated, simply furnished little burger joint sits half a block off Franklin Street. The menu is simple - Burgers (3 sizes to choose from), Hot Dogs (1 size only), FF, a Grilled Salmon Sandwich (it is Chapel Hill after all), a Grilled Chicken Sandwich (and it is in Orange County), and a Caesar Salad (and it is a University town). There are also sauces, toppings, and drinks - including beer. This is a semi-fast food setup - your order is taken up front by one of several young men wearing matching Buns shirts. You pay, get your drink cup & and a number, fill your drink, and grab a seat. Food is cooked to order, so it'll take 10 minutes or more depending on the crowd - food is brought to you. The Hot Dog (you have only one choice here) is a Foot Long, dressed as you choose, for $5, unless you choose to add Chili - that will cost you 75 cents - or Cheese - an additional 75 cents, as well. Wow, $5.75 for a Foot Long Hot Dog with Chili - that's more than a little bit silly. The Hot Dog as served is just strange - when they brought it out, my first thought was - that looks like a specialty Sushi Roll (check out the posted photo). The dog is loaded, no really - loaded, with mustard, which is the last item on the dog, in a striped pattern - it dominates the flavor, and gets all over everything, including unsuspecting bystanders, windows, and ceiling fans. The onions are Red Onions - just a bad choice. They bring it to the table accompanied by a plastic knife and fork - you are responsible for getting your own bundle of napkins, and insurance. This is a bad dog, and an even worse idea. Now the Burger is well cooked on the grill, comes out with a very nice flavor. You have some interesting choices on the toppings - 7 kinds of cheese, including Blue Cheese, Swiss, Gruyere, and the ever popular, Brie. You can choose American or Cheddar, but it may draw stares or even hoots. You can add ketchup, 2 different kinds of mustard, and 4 different blends of Mayo - all at no extra charge. Other toppings are the usual suspects, with 3 different kinds of onions, slaw, tomato, etc. Avocado, Fried Egg, Bacon, and Chili (yes, even Chili) at $1 extra - wow again, $1 for Chili. As I said, the Burger has a nice taste, but it is over-priced, and can be dressed for a costume party. This was an interesting Chapel Hill moment, but I'll settle for Sutton's or Merritt's next time. read more

As a college student, the fast-food hamburger evolves into a necessary part of the quintessential college diet. Buns, however, is quite the exception to greasy burgers and soggy fries. Having experienced all the burger shops on Franklin Street, I find Buns to have its own particular strengths and weaknesses. Walking in, you will find a shop with ample seating and friendly cashiers. The smell also offers a pleasant aroma of patties and fries, nothing too overly greasy nor meaty. My go-to order consists of a custom burger with fries and a strawberry milkshake. The burger is consistently made - the patty is cooked pink as requested, the exterior never charred. The fries do tend to suffer in their cookery - sometimes the fries are haplessly burnt, while other times, they are fried to a golden instagram-worthy texture. The addition of salt to the fries also appears to be sporadic, with some fries being way too salty and others lacking any seasoning. The milkshakes have a wonderful consistent texture - the ratio of ice cream to milk allows for a creamy mixture. In general, Buns is a decent bang for your buck when it comes to the burger elements. The fries are truly a hit and miss, but if you aren't that picky, Buns is the place to pick. If you are a foodie like myself, and are looking for some other joint for a better bite, there are other shops in the vicinity that may offer what you are looking for. read more

As far as campus burger joints go it's hard to get much better than Buns. Open late? Check. Large portions? Yepp. Reasonably priced? I'd say so. Delicious? Definitely. A plethora of options and build your own burger? Icing on the cake. To start with they have a lot of great burger choices, some of my favorites being the chorizo burger and Carolina burger topped with chili. Don't feel like one of Buns' options though? You can design your own burger with between 1-3 patties, choose your cheese, toppings and sauces and enjoy. They have some creative condiments such as wasabi mayo, curry mustard and dragon sauce- similar to "Yum yum" sauce in many hibachi restaurants. The burgers are consistently good as are the fries, which come in huge portions. The regular size is plenty to share or take home for later unless you're starving, and I'd advise adding chili and cheese for $1.50- totally worth it. The service is usually friendly as well, and they've even offered to cut the burgers in half when I'm sharing with my girlfriend which was a nice surprise. The only downside is that they can take a little bit of time compared to fast food burgers since they are made to order, but for the better quality this is just nitpicking. read more

Buns has a variety of meats available for their burgers (beef, veggie, and turkey) but I can only speak to their beef burgers. Overall, it's a pretty good burger, and they can cook them to order (I got mine medium rare), but it's not my favorite burger in the area. Their sides are huge! My fries could have easily fed multiple people, so keep that in mind if you're ordering for a group. I had a lot of leftovers, and they reheated surprisingly well in the oven the next day. My mom and I got takeout from here, and it was ready right on time. We had minimal contact with the staff but they seemed friendly and accommodating in the 2 minutes I interacted with them. The burgers and fries were great, though the fries were a little cold. The sheer variety of options to customize your burger were definitely impressive! I was able to just about recreate an affordable version of my favorite burger from back home. The one thing I wasn't wild about was the caramelized onions, as they were much sweeter than anticipated. We were given a gift card right before the pandemic from some friends and had been hesitant to use it because we know businesses have been struggling. That being said we decided to go ahead and use our card today and just tip big. Unfortunately when I went to pay for my order the cashier told me my card had expired. I asked him how old it was and he said he had no idea so I asked how long cards typically are valid and he said he didn't know. So my friends ended up getting us a $50 gift card that had no value (and there was no indication of any type of expiration date on the card). So I ended up paying for my food and leaving. You can customize your burger from the bun up, with a ton of choices for toppings, patties, and sauces. And if you really want, you could get a BLT or hot dog. But I stick with the all-beef burger, 100% of the time. The portions here are MASSIVE. These guys don't skimp on the burgers, you get every penny's worth of the $6-8 you pay, in quality and size. The only way I ever finish my meal here is if I either don't order fries or split with a friend -- and the fries are pretty good, so you want to order fries. And eat them quick, before they get soggy. You get a choice of either regular or sweet potato. To take full advantage of the 10-ish different types of dipping sauces here, I recommend getting the regular fries. My favorite sauces are the Dragon Sauce and Chipotle Mayo. The Curry Mustard one is alright. All in all, Buns is an awesome place to grab a bite with your friends... and if you're not getting that heavy food coma afterwards, you're doing it wrong. ;) read more

I learned so many things about the menu and how to run a successful business. The food here is so fresh they even have veggie burgers and sweet potato fries they make from scratch . You can make your own or pick from the options they have. They have over 5 different sauses to choose from my favorite was chipotle mayo dragon and thai sause. The amount of food you get for the price is good. There is enough seating and even a window view to enjoy the sun and view of the shreet. They have take out thru takeout Central and parking accross the street is only 1$ for a hour. After 8 mon-fri it's free. Come out get some food and tell Edgar Angee sent yah for some V.I.P treatment. I do not have a single complaint about Buns, so let me tell you about all the things I love about this place. I'm entering my twentieth year as a vegetarian and this place, by far, has got the best goddamned veggie burger in the Triangle*. I don't know what all's in there because, generally speaking, I cannot wait to wolf the thing down as soon as I get it in my greedy, greasy hands, but it's rice-based, I believe---as opposed to bean-based---and maybe has some oats in it. And I'm fairly certain there are other vegetables in it, like carrots, etc. I honestly don't know. And it honestly doesn't matter, because it's amazeballs. I usually get mine with lettuce, tomato, red onion, pickles, ketchup, and chipotle mayo. Occasionally I'll add gruyere or avocado brie. OMG, yum. I usually skip the fries---I adore baked fries, but fried fries are too much; it's too much!---but this last visit I ate about a half portion of sweet potato fries, and they are off-the-wall delicious. The curry mustard is a must as your dipping side. I've had the regular fries, too, and those are also quite fabulous. They've got Pepsi here. Oh, sorry, I said I didn't have any complaints, so, uh, moving on ... They have bottles of beer, too! $2 domestics / $2.50 imports / $3.50 craft brews. Not too shabby!
