Sup Dogs is hot dog heaven, full stop…read more If you love a creative, loaded, over-the-top hot dog, this is your place. The Firehouse Dog is a must -- bold, flavorful, and perfectly balanced with just the right kick. The cheesy jalapeño dog is everything it should be: melty, spicy, messy in the best way. And the taco dog? Somehow ridiculous and incredible at the same time. The fries are crispy, seasoned, and absolutely addictive, but let's talk about the real stars: the sauces. There are so many good ones that choosing becomes the hardest part of the visit. Drizzle, dip, smother -- you literally cannot go wrong. Even the buns deserve love -- soft, toasted just right, and strong enough to hold up to all that delicious chaos. Everything here is done right, from the flavors to the quality to the fun vibe. Sup Dogs is one of those places that makes you excited to come back before you've even finished eating. Five stars, no debate.

Sup Dogs was a big disappointment. We arrived on game day but early enough in the day that they…read morewere steady but not super busy. It was freezing today outside and we were seated by the door. Everything was fine until the hostess propped the door open. They left the door wide open and everyone in the front seating area was miserable. I asked if they could please close it and I was told no. They said the hostess stands by the door on game days. So they really don't care if their customers are comfortable or not. That says a lot. They certainly could've made adjustments given the cold and windy day. But our waitress was kind enough to move us when a table opened up in the back. That was a big relief and much more comfortable. Now to their food. The bacon cheese fries were great but didn't have bacon so we had to get them to bring back to sprinkle on top. The ranch was excellent and we all liked the app. My youngest got a grilled cheese which he enjoyed. My oldest got a burger which he said was okay, but nothing special. But the real disappointment comes in with the hot dogs. My first dog was cold, like unappetizingly cold. The waitress was very nice and took care of it immediately. However, the second dog came out almost immediately. If you like a boiled hot dog that's reheated in a microwave, you'll like their hot dogs. But I want a quality grilled hot dog. We'll stick to our ol' faithful CH burger joint from here on out. And I hope next time your customers are extremely uncomfortable on a freezing day sitting right next to the open door, you exercise some courtesy and close the door next time.

Out of their signature burgers, I've tried the chorizo, the jalapeno-pimento cheese burger, and the goat cheese burger, all delicious. The restaurant itself is homely and welcoming. Service is timely and amiable. Their loaded fries are also always a staple. Another plus is that they're open very late, meaning I can count on buns to satisfy many late-night cravings. Eating at Buns overall guarantees a unique flavor experience every time I visit, which is why I regard it so highly out of all the other burger spots in the Chapel Hill area.

I decide to stop in. The menu looked interesting esp that fried bologna sandwich but i was there to try out the dogs. At the window, im speaking to and elderly gentleman about NC State Athletics and was not in a rush to order at all. Just so happens, the rude guy working the window had a different thought in mind and literally said talk to me not to him if you're trying to order. So i turn my attention to the disrespectful guy, and start to place my order and he walks off and tells the young lady to finish taking my order. Just your rude customer service alone wins you a nice one star rating. You're in customer service he hospitable. Maybe you were having a bad day or something, but guess what being rude is never acceptable. And let me set the scene, the elderly gentleman and i are the only ones standing out there. A little more Hurricanes gear, which I didn't need, but what can you do. 3 dogs and a coke for $14. Prices may not be the same, but such is life. I ordered all three dogs with mustard, onions, and slaw, and one also had the chili. I have to admit a few splashes of Texas Pete hot sauce took them over the top. The dogs themselves are great quality, none of the mystery meats that some of these other Carolina dogs have. And I'm glad they didn't load the chili on. Maybe this is not legal to say in the south, but I'm just not a fan of a chili dog with so much chili that the whole thing falls apart. The toppings should complement the dog, not overwhelm it. OK, I digress... The service was tremendous. I chatted with the owners about various topics for a good half hour and they were incredibly hospitable. They even gave me a couple of Tootsie rolls. Even though I can't do chocolate, I was glad to take them as a token of hospitality.

The Roast Grill feels less like a restaurant and more like a preserved piece of mid-20th-century Americana hidden in plain sight along West Street. The narrow counter, wood-paneled walls, neon beer signs, Coca-Cola memorabilia, handwritten notices, old photographs, Hurricanes tributes, and decades of accumulated objects create an atmosphere that simply cannot be manufactured today. The place reminded me a little of Chicago's famous Billy Goat Tavern--especially the feeling of discovering something authentic tucked beneath an increasingly overbuilt urban streetscape. I ordered two hot dogs all the way with mustard, onions, chili, and slaw--absolutely NO ketchup, of course--along with a Coke in a glass bottle. The chili is legendary and reportedly takes up to three days to prepare. Whether that is folklore or fact, it certainly gives the hot dogs a flavor unlike almost anywhere else in Raleigh. One of my favorite details was the mounted goat wearing a red hat beneath the neon beer signs. It somehow fits perfectly within the visual layering and quirky personality of the interior. Even the traditions remain intact. At the end of the meal, every customer receives a Tootsie Roll. Places like the Roast Grill are becoming increasingly rare. It is not just a hot dog stand--it is a living piece of Raleigh history. If interested, you can view my post in "The Architecture of..." But other than that the way the cooks acted towards my mother was unacceptable. The female cooks in the food truck kept looking at my mother in a disrespectful way while she was eating her food. When being treated in this manner, it obviously leaves the customer uncomfortable and we will not be returning to this place no matter how good the tacos or food could be. If you want to actually eat here on the benches they have, to enjoy your food you won't experience that because of the unnecessary stares you will receive by the cooks.
