A1 Gyro and Philly, a food truck that serves lamb gyro, Philly cheesesteaks, burgers, and grilled chicken sandwiches, came to a neighborhood in Carrboro, NC today, and as a lamb gyro enthusiast, I decided to buy a couple (1 for my girl). I was the only customer, and the friendly Middle Eastern guy in the food truck asked what I wanted: 2 gyro wraps. He asked if I wanted to add hot sauce to my gyros with tzatziki sauce, and I said, "Yes". I asked him where the food truck is based, he said that he goes to different locations, and didn't mention a permanent location. I checked the address here on Yelp and it says it's based in Durham, NC, which is not too far from here. Each gyro wrap cost $12, and my total came up $26+ (I assume with tax included). I was about to pull out $25 cash but after he said total, I pulled $30, and he said not to worry about it. I insisted to give the $30 and he gave a $5 change. I guess I got a $1 discount. He finished cooking both gyros in about 12 min., a bit longer than I expected, considering I was the only customer he was serving at that time. The gyro wraps were served inside a small paper bag, and wrapped in aluminum foil. I was quite surprised at the size of the order for 2 gyros. When I opened my gyro wrap, the size looked regular yet a bit smaller that what I had in last October's State Fair, which was fine, considering the State Fair gyro (which came with side of Greek fries) cost me $18+. However, unlike that State Fair gyro, I did not enjoy A1's main specialty. I would have to agree with what the previous reviewer Renee said, "Onions does not make a Gyro make". I love onions but not too much on my Gyro; this one is loaded with so much onions, lettuce, and tomato to the point that it's drowning the flavors of tzatziki sauce and hot sauce (Did he forget to put it?). The amount of lamb gyro meat didn't seem to justify its $12 price; it's not even spiced well, and the mush of ingredients to hide the fact that it's lacking meat just looked as bad as it tasted. That's not even the worst part. When I ate the gyro wrap, the pita bread tasted soggy, and that unpleasant texture and taste were more emphasized on every bite than the lamb gyro. I was not able to finish it; and just threw my leftover away. As I'm writing this review, my girl hasn't eaten her gyro wrap yet, and I haven't told her what I thought so she could judge by herself. We recently enjoyed an $11+ gyro in Kebab Skewer in Cary, and a $12+ chicken + lamb over rice at Tasty Halal Eats food truck in Morrisville, NC (both I reviewed here on Yelp), and I'm sad to say that A1's gyro wraps were nowhere close to the food quality of those foods and the State Fair gyro I mentioned earlier. The food truck's friendly customer service and 99% Sanitation Score are the only positive things I could say about this food truck. A1's gyro is clearly the opposite of what "A1" means. Pretty good! Nothing fancy - bread, meat, and cheese for the most part. We got the chicken philly. The owner was very kind and made our food quickly. The wait only came from some many others in front of us. The food was piping hot and flavorful! We believed you received your money worth in this sandwich. For us we got mayo, onions, green peppers, cheese, and of course chicken. I did over hear him explain in the lamb gyro, there is no pork - but he wasn't sure if no beef was included. I've gotten A1 a few times now at our neighborhood clubhouse. My family has gotten the different gyros and Philly Cheesesteak. The owner is pretty nice and straight to business. The food is pretty good, especially for the price and quanity of food. I'm sure people from Philly would have complaints about the cheesesteak, but I thought it was decent. I wouldn't go out of my way to try it, but it's worth a try if it's in your area. read more

Had their food truck stop by the apt complex tonight. Arrived, set up, and serving on time! Super nice guy who knows what he's doing. Ordered the Lamb Gyro and was not disappointed. Served up super quick with generous portions (lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and Tzatziki sauce). Cannot tell you how yummy this was. If you get the chance to try them out ... do so! A1 Gyro and Philly has a selection of both gyros and phillies (who would have guessed!). The food was really good, didn't take long, and wasn't expensive. I am a huge Philly cheesesteak fan, and I thought these were on the money. The bread was great! I also got to try the gyro, which was as good as any around here. If you're in the mood for a quick hot meal, can't go wrong with this place. I do wish they had fries or something other than chips for a side, but this is a pretty no-frills truck so I can't count that against them. read more

The A1 Gyro and Philly truck is one of my favorites that come to my office park. As I walk over to where the food trucks park, if the wind is blowing in the right direction, as soon as I turn the corner around the last building and the truck is in sight, I am greeted by the most wonderful smell coming from the truck (really just a small trailer). Sam doesn't run his truck like most people. He's got a system that works for him, even if it's not what you're used to. He's a one man show manning the grill. When he gets a second he'll take your order and start making it right away (you pay when your food is ready and he hands it to you). I will admit that the only thing I've had at his truck is the steak philly. It is just so perfect tasting the way it is, I can't bring myself to order something else. Whatever kind of spices he puts in there are just amazing (and as I said before, it smells wonderful). My only complaint is that he's apparently not into social media or any of the other marketing things the kids are using these days (like I said, he's got his own way which works for him). As a result, I can't figure out how to easily figure out where the truck is going to be. Last time he was at our office park he was complaining that the day he was assigned was the same day one of the bigger offices provided free lunch each week, and I'm afraid he may have opted out of coming to our park. But if you happen to see him around, I would definitely recommend trying it out. Or just stand downwind from the truck and you will soon not be able to resist! read more

Ok. So. I absolutely am obsessed with chicken Philly sandwiches. And I try them whenever I can at whatever restaurant is featuring one of my loves on its menu. Well. I've had success in about 2 cities that have taken me to heaven and blown me away with their renditions of a chicken philly. I am hella grateful (bc I live here now) to announce that none other than Bull City has taken the position of 3rd city! I had the massive epicurean pleasure of having a sandwich made the other night by this guy with a genuine love and respect for not only food, but what he does and how he delivers his food to you. As he was preparing my sandwich he said, "this is going to be the best sandwich you've ever tasted" & trust me, I was praying to all of the food gods in my head, that he was right. After getting back to my place as fast as I possibly could, I washed my hands (bc hygiene) and was taken to another planet. A planet where chicken Philly sandwiches are prepared with love and made to perfection by people who actually love doing what they do. It always shows up in the food. So in conclusion, Yes! Give this food truck your money. You will not be disappointed! & by doing this we're being awesome and supporting local business! ...now I want a chicken Philly and it's 10:33 am on a Sunday, lol. My wife and I just finished eating 2 Philly Cheesesteaks at Amberly in Cary. Really good! Fresh bread, great flavor and no gristle in any of the meat. We are kinda Cheesesteak snobs having grown up near Philly. Best $10 sub I've had in a while. An incredibly disappointing philly steak sandwich. I ordered mine with all the toppings and no cheese--what I got was flavorless meat and some cooked onions on bread. Unless the cheese is the only thing you care about (and hopefully fully, it's good), then you're better off getting something else. read more

A1 came to our apt complex, and I'm so glad we got to try their food! My husband got the Philly cheesesteak, which he said was REALLY good. I chose the lamb gyro, and it was absolutely delicious. It didn't taste gamey like lamb sometimes does. The gyro was so stuffed full of lettuce, onions, tomatoes, and tzatziki that you can't even take a bite without it overflowing. That, to me, is the telltale sign of a good sandwich. The pita has the perfect texture and warmth. All of this for a very reasonable price! I would love to try this place again and if they decide to add sides to their menu, I would definitely try them, too. read more

Lamb gyro veggie/meat ratio was skewed - too much veggie. Sauce was not a cool cucumber /dill taste, but more of bland mayo. Chicken philly also did not have enough meat. read more

Great, quick meal. Lots of fresh ingredients. My gyro had chunks of tomato and onions, and I was all about it. Wow! This is a small food truck/cart located across Roxboro St from the courthouse, and I will definitely be a new regular there! They serve breakfast and lunch, however I have only tried the lunch so far. There is no price that goes above $6 that I saw, which makes it one of the cheapest lunches I've seen in the area. I got a gyro sandwich, a bag of Doritos, and a Gatorade, for only $8.50. So the gyro... It was one of the best I have ever had. The guy heated the pita, cooked the lamb, and assembled it all right there on the flat-top. The tzatziki sauce was great. From there he added some lettuce, onion, and tomato, before finishing it off with some excellent hot sauce! This has been the first spot since I've moved to Durham that was worthy of a yelp review. Went to this food truck the other night and got two chicken gyros and a lamb gyro. The chicken gyros were AMAZING!!! I could eat those everyday. The tzatziki sauce was incredible. They have a good selection of drinks and chips. The owner was incredibly friendly, personable, and very passionate about his food truck which really shined through in the food. The lamb gyro did leave much to be desired. I was anticipating fresh, grilled lamb, but it was sliced like deli meat... not great. The chicken, though, definitely made up for it. After reading the reviews I was excited to see the truck coming this week. I tried the Lamb Gyro for $7.50 which by the way he charged $8.00. The Gyro was OK not great. The tomatoes stood out as most likely frozen, very bland definitely not fresh. The meat was standard an the sauce wasn't special either. With that being said this was OK but certainly not worth the walk to the truck or the $8.00 charge for just a sandwich. I might give this truck another try with the Philly but honestly Arby's Gyro is equivalent to this and cheaper. read more
