    Disappointing
    Karl K.

What a colossal disappointment. I was lured to Missy's Grill by a 4.5 star Yelp rating from a decent data set of 22 reviews. I don't know what these other reviewers are tasting, but the lunch I had today was worth two stars at best. Name any--ANY-- fast food chain, and I can promise you a better meal there. Hot dog all the way: below average pink wiener on an untoasted bun. I could not even get a reading on the chili because there was so little of it. Same thing with the slaw unless you count the marble sized chunk of cabbage core that I encountered. Double cheeseburger: they don't have pickles. What kind of a place serves cheeseburgers without pickles as an option as a topping? It wouldn't have mattered. The patties were dry and bland with no char and no taste. They smacked of frozen and/or cheap quality. French fries: these started out pretty good, but I was not provided with salt, which they desperately needed. Then I encountered one that tasted rotten and fishy. Nasty. Sweet tea: above average. It is sad that this was the best thing about my meal. I took my lunch to the nearby Efland United Methodist Church parking lot and ate it there. At one o'clock the church bells began to tintinnabulate "The Old Rugged Cross". I love church bells. And old hymns. But these bells were not tuned properly and the song was played half in a major key and half in a minor key. This does not work. It turned a rather reverent and hopeful hymn into something quite doleful. At least it matched my meal. Speaking of which, the people working at Missy's were very nice and the meal was very cheap. But I guess you get what you pay for.

As I was on my way to Tanger Outlets in Mebane, I noticed the sign for Efland, and that reminded me that someone had mentioned Missy's Grill. If I recall correctly, they had highly recommended the hot dogs, and I seem to be on some Holy Grail quest for the best Carolina-style hot dogs. In reality, I think I'm always searching for a hot dog like the old Amos & Andy's in downtown Durham a long, long time ago... or the Eagle Drive-In that was at the northeast corner of Old Oxford and Roxboro... Since those ancient days, my favorite dog was It's a Wiener at 54 & 55, but the Dog House appears to have sadly put them out of business. Well, back to Missy's... I decided to see if I could find the place. Finding it was no problem. It really IS just off the interstate. I placed my order, 2 hot dogs, mustard, slaw, chili, and onions, and a diet Coke. A few moments later, my order was ready, and I headed to one of their picnic tables for my research. The dogs looked pretty much as I had anticipated, and I didn't think they were bad. I did almost immediately note that the slaw tasted like it came from a little plastic container at the local grocery store. In my opinion, if you're going to serve coleslaw, it needs to be freshly prepared. Cutting corners never pays, and I have to admit the slaw is what really lowered my impression. It's possible that the same dog minus the slaw would have been really good, but I'm not sure. My hesitation has to do with the sweetness of the overall package. I assume it was the slaw that was overly sweet, but it is possible to make chili sweet. I'd say "too sweet," but that's just being redundant. If the chili was sweet, that would be a real turn-off. On the positive side, the prices are pretty darn great. My order was three bucks, even. You can't do that at the other hot dog places I generally like. I might try Missy's again, but I'm not in Efland very often...

    BLT and grease-stained paper

I had no idea this place existed until yesterday. I got off the highway to get gas and my plan was just to get a bag of chips and a drink from the gas station. The Coble Dairy sign and handful of construction workers standing underneath the covered seating area lured me in. The guy in front of me ordered a BLT and he seemed to know what he was doing, so I ordered one too, on toasted bread with mayo, salt and pepper. I didn't even read the menu that was tacked up on the inside of the ordering window. And I still don't know what they serve, except for "BREAKFAST ALL DAY" and I noticed they close at 9pm. Plenty of time to drive down I-40 this summer for BLTs and milkshakes, if they serve them. Anyhow, I also ordered a bag of chips (90¢) and chocolate milk (1.10). I waited in my car, because it seemed safe (not that the covered area seemed unsafe) because a new ATM was being installed and the noise was distracting. Very quickly my order was ready and it was a little more than $5. That BLT, that BLT, THAT BLT! No less than 8 pieces of bacon! I had to take 3 pieces off so I could fit my mouth around the bread without harming myself. Fresh, thinly sliced tomato and crisp iceberg lettuce. For $3 I really didn't expect much, but it blew my mind how big and heavy and good that wax paper covered sandwich was! And my milk wasn't a carton, it was in a big ol' 24oz cup. I really can't wait to go back. I can't say I'll try anything else on the menu, but it's DEFINITELY worth the pit stop on the way to any point east.

Wife had the pork bbq and I had bbq chicken. She thought the pork was the best she's had in NC and liked the white slaw. The chicken was good. Tender . I got the red slaw and baked beans. Will get white slaw next time. Note the baked beans are not gluten free and have pork in them (important for allergies). We will go back and I recommend for all ages , dates and even the right type business meeting (one that would be ok at BBQ joint).

We were sat within 15 to 20 minutes, with a party of 10 which is pretty freaking awesome. We started with some beers, waters, Diet Coke, and a few cocktails. We also tried the fried pickles which were pickled spears crispy, tasty, and light unfortunately though the coating kept fell off a lot, and that was a little annoying. The dipping sauce I believe a homemade ranch was good. Everyone basically ordered a plate which consisted of a meat of your choice two sides, and hush puppies. Overall, the food was tasty. The brisket was juicy. The pork was eaten up by all, and the hush puppies were crispy. The only issue would be the sides were OK. The french fries were good. The collards were raved about the corn pudding was OK and the green beans were tasty. I'd say this is a place to try. It's definitely a little bit of down home feel with comfort bites.

We started with the Pimento Cheese Hushpuppies, which I had high hopes for. They were a bit over‑fried and dry, with more breading than cheesy center, and the jalapeño bacon jam was watery and didn't quite complement the hushpuppies. That said, the concept is fun, and with a thicker, chunkier jam, I think they'd really shine. The Fried Oysters, however, were a completely different story. Perfectly breaded, not overly heavy, and full of flavor. My husband--who's keto and peeled the breading off--still commented on how good the oysters themselves were. If anything, we just wished the portion was bigger. The star of the starters for me was the She Crab Soup. Creamy, rich, and loaded with crab. It was one of those dishes you keep going back to between bites of everything else. And here's my pro tip: dip the hushpuppies into the soup. It transformed them from dry to delicious, and I even suggested to our server that the kitchen consider offering them together. For my entrée, I had the Bang Bang Shrimp Tacos with a side of pasta salad. The shrimp were cooked perfectly, and the Thai‑inspired sauce had a sweet kick that I honestly wish there had been more of. The pasta salad was classic but surprisingly good--fresh, balanced, and better than most versions I've had lately. My husband ordered the Salmon & Shrimp Scampi, swapping the pasta for extra spinach to stay keto. Both proteins were cooked beautifully, full of flavor, and plated generously. Overall, the meal had a few highs and a couple of misses, but the quality of the ingredients and the creativity of the menu make this a place I'd absolutely visit again. With a little fine‑tuning on a few items, 2 Twelve has the potential to be truly exceptional.

My meal, the Charleston Crab Cakes, was really good too (I asked that they put the creamed corn on the side -- the crab cakes will come on top of the creamed corn if you don't make a special request). But when (not if) we return, I will be ordering the seafood pasta for sure because it was that good! A friend recommended the pork chops and the burgers. The ambience is quaint and the indoor dining space is very small and cozy. There was a bit of a wait when we arrived. I recommend making a reservation if you don't want to dine outdoors. It was January so too cold for us to eat outdoors because there is no heating and the overhead fans were on! Also, please bring a little patience for parking because this restaurant is in an area of downtown with limited parking.
