Much like all of the reviews before me say, do not let the unassuming interior and exterior fool you, this spot has some delicious food. It was a hot September day, so we grabbed some chips & salsa, chips & guac, and a diet coke to cool off. They also have Mexican coke in the bottle, which is a nice treat. The guac was so fresh and flavored perfectly, I had to remind myself that I was sharing with another person so that I would not eat it all. Moving onto our entrees, I was really torn because the burgers look SO GOOD but I was really in the mood for tacos. I got an order of the shrimp tacos and my colleague got the burger that comes with chorizo on it. He raved about the burger so if this interests you, I think it is a good choice. His order also came with house made chips, which are always delicious. My tacos were fresh and had a crema on them. I thoroughly enjoyed. This is a great spot to stop in if you're nearby. From the moment we walked through the door, the owners, Slim and his wife, Lynn, made us feel like family. Neither me, my family nor Slim are originally from Siler City, but you'd have thought we'd all known each other for 30 years. They were professional, genuinely welcoming, and went the extra mile to make sure everything was perfect. They brought our food out promptly and Lynn spent time working the room (lol) with her mix of warm, welcoming personality and a sense of humor that had customers smiling and laughing everywhere she went. Slim and I had a chance to chat a bit about his story, and at the same time he made sure everything was exactly the way it should be. Getting to know both of them and hearing about the journey they've been on over the last few years was honestly one of the highlights of our visit. Now let's talk about the food... absolutely phenomenal. The mild chicken wings were exactly what my family has been searching for ever since leaving the Southwest, where bold flavor and great food are simply the expectation. Today, I'm happy to report that The Bone Yard has officially become our East Coast BBQ spot! We sampled a little bit of everything, including the mild wings, a full rack of ribs, and a half pound of pulled pork topped with Slim's own Carolina mustard sauce. Every single item brought something unique to the table. Nothing tasted ordinary or mass produced. The ribs were tender, juicy, and practically fell off the bone. The pulled pork was packed with flavor, and that mustard sauce put it over the top. Every bite showed the care, passion, and pride that goes into the food. You can genuinely taste the difference. As I looked around the restaurant, all I saw were smiling faces enjoying incredible food, and I knew we weren't the only ones who felt this way. In our opinion, this is hands down the best BBQ we've had anywhere in North Carolina. Would we drive 40 minutes just to eat here again? Without hesitation... hell, we might do it again tomorrow. I have gone there at least a half dozen times in the last few months. Brisket and pulled pork are really great. The cornbread muffins are fantastic. And, that succotash, which I had never had before, is absolutely, "reach across the table and slap grandma", fabulous. Really, I had never had succotash before. It looks like a mess, but wow, the tomatoes, corn, lima beans, and whatever else is in there, set my tastebuds on end! The hoppin john is great too, but the succotash! I don't usually like french fries with anything on them but salt or a bit of spicy rub, but whatever that crispy stuff is on the outside is very good. My only lament now is that they don't have Cheerwine on the fountain or in 20 oz bottles. But insofar as the Q goes, this is the real thing and it's done very well. Oh, and the sauces, they are great. I wish though that the hot was a bit hotter and maybe a bit more viscous. But I mix it with the house and its great. I do also love the mustard sauce. I mix that with the other two as well. Now that white sauce, it doesn't appeal to me. I've had it, but I'm from the midwest barbecue triangle, St Louis, Kansas City and Nashville where red sauce is king! Other than that, I can't say Knucklehead is better than a few other Q joints I frequent, but they have definately kicked up their game and are putting out food that is on par for great food that is what I see as competition for the other places in town. The two on the south side of 85/40 are okay for a quick hop of the highway and get back on. Neither is of the high quality Q that should be expected. Knucklehead and that other place (on the other side of the tracks) are real competition for each other. Neither though (bowls over) the other. The one think I do want to praise is that on my most recent visit a couple of days ago, I noticed their rating from the food inspector service was %100. A rating of 100 for any restaurant is very difficult to achieve. I rarely see a 100 rating. To me, a 100 rating tells me that they have taken to task getting things done in a manner of high quality. It means they are taking steps that put them into a mode that they keep their kitchen and food preperation on par as if it was my own kitchen.
