The sandwich had honey-ham, salami, provolone, lettuce, tomato, onion, mayo (I declined this), and Italian dressing on a French roll. It also comes with a side and I chose baked chips. Food was ready within 15 minutes, which was when it was estimated ready for pickup. The sandwich was pretty good! I would consider the taste to be similar to the Italian sub at Firehouse Subs - just this one being a few dollars more. I'd go back here again because I love supporting local businesses! read more

Work travels took me to Burlington today so in my sandwich shop search, I remembered seeing this location. It's very easy to order before seating and there is a pick up window that displays your ticket number when your food is ready. I ordered the portobello sandwich and changed the wheat to sourdough. The bread was nice and toasty and I only needed to add a little salt and pepper to the mushrooms. The same with the pasta salad. My only wish that the veggies were a little fuller on the sandwich. read more

Go only if you like really, really bland food. Nothing had any seasoning, except for salt in the French onion soup. The Ruben kraut had no texture or flavor, nor did the sauce. My wife said her side salad was "fine." Her "sweet lady" sandwich had smoked turkey that could have been used to make a decent sandwich, but the seasoning wasn't there. She discarded the sandwich and ate the turkey - an unintended diet! By chance we both got the sourdough bread, which we both love, but not this poor grocery store variety. So, there's not much to recommend the place unless, as I've said, you like your food very plain. Service was fine, the restaurant was clean and kitschy (fine for lunch), so no minuses there. In this world of inflated reviews, I might have given 3 stars, but the place is overpriced. $30 for two half-sandwich half-side combos, no drinks, is not a one $ place in my book. Great soups and sandwiches. The decor is a fun mix of antique railroad memorabilia. Locally owned - which is always a plus in my book and the main reason I use yelp - so I support local businesses and not faceless corporations, but this is a spot I have frequented since my kids were little. They loved the train memorabilia and they ate things like tomato bisque (delicious!!) with a half a sweet lady (grilled turkey, cheese and apricot preserves) in the winter and a sweet lady and water melon in summer. They always have fruit on the menu as a side dish option, fresh if they can get it in season, canned if not. My kids were excited to pick one of the trains off the shelf by the front door to play with for a moment before their lunch arrived. Since the toys were a little sticky from years of play, it taught them to wash their hands before eating and to put borrowed toys away, neatly and I had a rule that they could pick a train to play with until their meals were ready and then they put the trains away and washed their hands and ate. On a recent visit, a very elderly man who moved very slowly left his cane at his table (closest to the pickup window) and came to claim the wrong order. The young man making sandwiches and assembling final orders politely asked him to double check his order number and got the order to the right customers. While the elderly gentleman made his way back to the table to check his order number, the kitchen staff member grabbed the right order, ran through the kitchen to the dining room, and met the man at his table with his correct order. The cook covered a good distance while the customer made it 6-8 feet. The elderly man was impressed with the service and happily sat down and ate his meal, rather than being embarrassed by forgetting his order number. read more

The food, service and atmosphere are great! I highly recommend the Jamaican Train Wreck, but it is addictive! My only negative feedback is the price. In my opinion it's a little overpriced for a sandwich, particularly for the ones you could make at home. But I know margins in the food industry are slim and costs are high at this time. read more

Southbound Sandwich Works is located along South Church Street (US 70) in a small shopping center. After getting settled into the hotel we were staying at, we decided to get something a little more. After checking reviews for different places, we decided to give this place a try. When we got here, the lot was pretty empty, but it was around 7:45 pm when we got there, and their closing time was 8:30 pm. Once you come up to the place, you can tell right away that this place is train themed. The names on the menu items also reflect this theme. We were immediately greeted by one of the staff. We took a little while to decide since this was the first time here. After looking over the menu, I ended up going with The Highrail sandwich with chips, which is a Philly cheese steak, but told them no mushrooms due to an allergy. A few minutes later, the order was ready. The one who served us at the counter ended up bringing it out to us instead of us going up to the window to get it. My mom had gotten a half salad instead. The Highrail was good and hot, along with the bread being very soft, so it was very good and easy to eat. My mom said the salad was good as well. Overall, this was a good find in the Burlington area. The food was good and so was the service. It was nice and clean as well. The one thing that could be improved is the pricing. The half salad seemed to be overpriced for the size that was actually received. Even though that was the case, I would come back to this place in the future if I'm in the area. read more

In spite of the great sandwiches the customer service is terrible. We were not greeted when we walked in only stared at. However, the chicken salad I had today was chopped in small cubes that the mayo was not intergrated into the chicken to make a lush chicken salad. It was sparse, hard to eat and it fell apart. First time here to this very cute and clean restaurant with a train theme. I came specifically for the Rueben, but was slightly disappointed. Sourdough instead of Rye, which is fine for a lot of folks and was tasty bread, but I prefer rye. Also, too heavy on the thousand island dressing so it was hard to taste if the sauerkraut was good or not. I excepted a sandwich specific restaurant to serve crafted entrees, but this seemed to be mostly pre packaged. That said, I'm picky about my Ruebens. There's a couple of other sandwiches I want to try here, including the Jamaican Trainwreck and the Portabella Porter that both sound very tasty. And also, several salads that sound yummy. Prices are good. $7.50 for full sandwich and side. I think next time I'll try 1/2 sandwich with a small salad for $8.19. These prices do not include beverages, those are $2 each. Exceptionally clean and friendly staff. Casual environment. You pay up front, get your order at a window and clean up your own table. No tipping required. Ordered for dining in and was brought a to go bag to the table. I had asked for a description of the spicy chicken soup and no one could tell me anything about it. I said as long as it wasn't tomato based and it was a broth it'd be fine. What I got had the consistency of pizza sauce and was all tomato based, tasted horrible and couldn't eat it. One of our sandwiches came out wrong and they wouldn't fix it. We walked out without eating, left our uneaten food on the table.
