I had heard good things about T Distefano's bakery before and happened to be in Mebane for the day. I'm so glad I was because everything we tried was delicious. The shop has the display cases right when you walk in the door and there is a little cafe area off to the right which seemed cute. We were greeted when we walked in and the girl who helped us gave us plenty of time while we decided what to order. I asked what her favorite thing was that they had and she told me the danishes or the cheesecakes. I ended up ordering several things to try: a glazed donut, glazed raspberry filled donut, powdered raspberry filled donut, cheese danish, chocolate chip cookie, and cinnamon roll. The donuts and cinnamon roll were given to family who already knew how good the donuts were and we tried the chocolate chip cookie and cheese danish. The chocolate chip cookie was huge, chewy, and had a great flavor. I think my favorite thing I tried was the cheese danish. The dough was buttery and the filling wasn't too sweet. It was a great suggestion from the girl working there. Also, all of this was under $18 which is crazy. Will definitely be coming back. read more

Mebane is a haven for chains, so it was a pleasant surprise to find this small independent bakery so close to all the national retail. It reminded me of Amoroso's in Greensboro albeit with a more limited selection. That said, everything that was in stock - cakes, cheesecake rolls, traditional Italian desserts, and more - looked appealing. The woman working the counter was patient while I looked everything over. In the end, I opted for a cannoli, and it proved to be a good decision. Even after the drive home, it was still tasty. Mebane is far from the first place that comes to mind when you think of Italian bakeries, but if you're out this way and looking for one, Distefano's is the first name you should think of. read more

I found this gem while finding a local coffee shop while driving. I was not expecting a bakery full of massive desserts, which got me more excited that I stopped here. I got the Boston Crème Cake and a peppermint mocha latte. The two ladies behind the counter were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. I stopped here on my way to shop at the outlets. I wanted something sweet and tasty and this place was recommended by Yelp of course. Wow, once entering the smell of fresh my baked goods hit you. They have tons of choices of sweets, from cupcakes, cookies, pastries, donuts, I feel like I'm missing something I was so overwhelmed...lol. I ended up getting raspberry twist, raspberry cream cheese filled pastry, apple dumpling cupcake, and a cream horn. All were fresh and very tasty. The cream horn was not overpowering with the icing inside, it was fluffy and delicate if that makes sense. It was so good. I highly recommend stopping here if you have a sweet tooth craving, you want he disappointed!!! I look forward to stopping again when I'm in the area!!!!!! read more

What can I say. Tom and his employees have knocked it out of the park with this bakery! We went for the bagels (which sadly they aren't making currently) but we stayed for the people and the sweets! They helped us turn around a day that was otherwise pretty dreary and made it so sweet! The tiramisu was hands down my favorite (and I'm a tiramisu lover!) but we didn't try anything we didn't like! This is a great spot for pastries and bagels. I've been a few times before and each time they have a different selection. I went about 15 minutes after they opened and they were still bringing out some of the items. The bagels were so fresh and delicious and still hot when I got home. We got the cheddar bagel and sun-dried tomato bagel, both were so good! We also got a few muffins, which were also amazing. WHAT HAPPENED??? We started going here shortly after Tom started DiStefsno's. The pastries were SPOT-ON and the fillings were MORE than adequate, BUT, that was then.....this is now! I paid (and I do mean paid) a visit just a couple of days ago and purchased a dozen of Tom's offerings, all white cream except for four combo white cream/raspberry filling. No longer were any filled to capacity, no longer were any fresh and puffy, now they had a minimum, stingy amount of cream and jelly. They were no longer light and fluffy, now they're coarse, dry, and almost stale. Tom: The exceptional amount of filling and the absolute freshness was the very factor that made your product(s) head and shoulders above your competition! I understand the rising prices, BUT, due to past temper tantrums and severe drop in quality.....this Veteran will not darked your threshold again. read more

Got a bunch of sweets to try from here. I believe they are known for their cream filled donuts but anything here is delicious! They also have a drive up window so you don't even have to exit the car. I think my favorite thing so far has been the red velvet cupcake and donuts! It's totally worth the drive for some food sweets. As per the norm, other Yelpers suggest and I obey (particularly when venturing forth into the smaller towns of NC where no Baker has gone before). As per the norm, I'm very glad that we listened, as T. Distefano's Bakery takes 'pastry power' to a whole other level. Let's get things straight here: despite any hint or suggestion to the contrary, this isn't a 'coffee shop'. It's a bakery that sells drip coffee, which is quite different (as has been explored in an earlier review). Don't get all worked up if you think that donuts, muffins, and more should automatically come with espresso delights - that's just your not-really-European-but-you-think-it-is-because-you're-a-Starbucks-bred-American caffeinated sensibility talking. Distefano's isn't about waking up; it's about bringing about a delicious-induced carb coma, with occasional jolts of sugary goodness. We stopped here prior to venturing into the maw of the capitalistic beast (i.e. Tangier outlets), and it provided our two nap-less little girls with just enough M&M cookie energy to carry them through the outlet-shopping without a complete and total meltdown. The cookies seemed massive prior to our actually holding them, and when our girls actually had their little paws on the things, it became apparent that distance and non-glare glass doesn't skew the actual size of baked ridiculousness. See the photo - their cookies were as big as their faces, and they loved them. I got an apple turnover (crispy, chewy pastry crust spewing forth chopped apple gooey sweetness - 'spewing' isn't usually a great verb, but trust me - it works here) and my beloved got a almond something-or-other (that's portrayed in another of the pictures here). She geeked on it, describing it as densely sweet and crunchy. She also bought a half-dozen of their glazed donuts (some stuffed with fruity stuff, some plain). When it was all said and done, it cost us just over $12, which wasn't bad at all. I ended up going back in to get one of their huge blueberry muffins, which I ate today - even a day later, this thing held its moist, berry-stuffed consistency. Friendly, helpful, and patient service, with the fellow helping us talking through each pastry with my wife (who, bless her soul, loses all ability to make food-related decisions when it actually comes time to order anything). It had plenty of tables inside, and a couple of outside tables with chairs, where we sat and stuffed our faces in the warm North Carolina sun. We'll be back. read more

This place is the real deal! What a happy coincidence we found it. On our way from GSO to the coast house shopping we needed a coffee stop. After stopping at Distefano's it makes me think "maybe we should be narrow our online search for homes near places with good bakeries." We did have a good cup of coffee and a latte as we were searching for. In addition we had the most delightful, if slightly unconventional, bagel - light and tender inside and gently crisp on the outside. They even have bismarcks made of a delicious donut, buttery angel cream filling and raspberry jelly. Everything was fresh and fully homemade. Maybe I'm glad we don't live closer. read more
