My daughter is a student at Elon University (NC) and was turning 21. I live in MA and needed to locate a bakery to create and deliver an amazing cake, so I searched the internet for bakeries in Burlington (NC) and located Main Street Cake Shoppe. After spending time on their website, their FB page and reviewing YELP, I decided to "go for it" and place an order for a cake similar to one that I saw on their FB page. I completed the "contact us" form and waited. And waited. I ended up phoning after a few days and spoke with April, who...in the beginning, wasn't very helpful with flavor combinations (suggested I check the site) but was very pleasant and patient while I did so. Ultimately, the cake was done (on time) and April even texted me a pic. They also delivered directly to my daughter exactly during the timeframe that we discussed. The cake was beautiful, the exact color combo that I requested...and hand painted to boot! I ordered pink champagne for the first tier and coconut for the second. I obviously didn't taste it but my daughter said that it was amazing!!!! All's well that ends well!!! Next time I'm in Burlington, I'm definitely stopping by to say thanks personally! After leaving music class I noticed the cutest cake shop. We decided to check them out. The parking lot is extremely small so be careful. The inside is warm and inviting and everything is displayed so beautifully. The staff answered all of my questions and broke down their prices for me. We tried three of their cupcakes and everything was moist, fluffy and delicious. We had their red velvet, strawberry and cream and cherry vanilla! The strawberry and cream were my favorite! They also had free face painting and cookies to be decorated for free! We will be back because I want to try their brownies. read more

I came back on 2/2/21 just because I heard the bakery had new owners. Under previous ownership the customer service was as dry as the cake and they had the most awful tasting frosting. Under new ownership, I was greeted & given information about the products and sale of the day. The cake was flavorful, moist and decadent as cake should be. I can finally say the product matches the decor now. I will be coming back! I didn't give 5 stars because I haven't tried the cake slices yet. I only had cupcakes today. read more

I was blown away with the custom order I picked up today. I called Main St Cake with a bit of a last minute request for a customized Harry Potter themed birthday cake for my fiancee's 33rd birthday. The staff was, prompt, professional, accommodating, and had plenty of suggestions to help me fill in the blanks of my idea/vision. When I picked the cake up today I was FLOORED! A really cute bakery with great customer service. I arrived 35 mins before closing and was surprised by the assortment still available for the day. I went for a slice of lemon blueberry cake and triple berry cake given there wasn't anything dark chocolate on the menu. It's important to note that they offer different options each day which is awesome because it gives a nice sense of anticipation upon arrival. For those who prefer to know the options beforehand, you can download their app and the list of daily baked delights is revealed. Okay, so now back to the cakes. They both went straight for Oreo, one for the sliced cake the 3 year old for the cuppie cake. Of course, I went for the tried and true coco slice of cake. My daughter the coconut. I am a young black guy I have never bought personalized cakes before. I was looking for a shop and happened to pass this on the side of the road. I wish I never would have saw this shot and would have continued driving. When I went into the shop the people seemed unsure if I was actually going to purchase a cake. They introduced me to the new owner and pulled out a receipt bought book and for a cake that's less than 6 in she basically told me it was going to be a almost 130 dollars. I was a little taken back but I decided to go through with it because it was for a special birthday party. After days of calling the shop and leaving voicemails and waiting for the shop to open back up and return my phone calls; I finally had them returned my calls. They called several times because they had forgot everything I told them I want it on the cake when I first paid for half of the cake. I had to give them the colors of the cake again and also the type of flavoring of icing I wanted. When I finally went to pick up my cake someone met me at the shop, a guy whom I never had seen before. His nails were extremely dirty so I had assumed he had just rushed and put finishing touches on my cake. As I am heading down the road, I stopped to look at the other side of my cake that I didn't have a chance to look at it and see THEY SPELLED THE NAME WRONG. I called late that night and left a voicemail explaining the situation. Over a day later someone finally called me back. In explaining my frustrations they basically told me there was nothing they were going to do about it and hung up the phone on me. I have continued to call the shop and no one will pick up anymore. I have called over 10 times. WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T GO HERE. THERE ARE BETTER AND CHEAPER SHOPS AROUND BURLINGTON. This new management sucks!! Please save yourself the trouble of having to communicate or deal with them. Update: Days later she returned my call but not once accepted responsibility for the child like coloring on cake and the misspelled name on the cake. She put everything on me. She didn't even acknowledge that she ignored my calls over 15 times. She treated me like I was stupid because I was a young black man. She ruined my FL trip because she made me feel like nothing. On the hunt for a great bakery to order cupcakes, Main Street was recommended to me by some friends. I had never tried their cupcakes or cakes before, but decided to place an order for my son's first birthday party just based on the recommendation. When I went to the shop to place my order, I was disappointed by the lack of customer service. I wanted some direction and advise on popular flavors and good combinations of cake & frosting, but was only offered, "it's up to you" or "whatever you like." Also, I asked if the carrot cake could be made without nuts and I was told no. Really? Why not? Regardless, I ordered 3 dozen cupcakes (birthday cake with buttercream frosting, red velvet with cream cheese frosting & apple cinnamon with cinnamon buttercream frosting) and a smash cake (birthday cake with buttercream frosting and no sprinkles.) Totaling $100. Wow! I wasn't expecting the cupcakes & cake to cost so much. Before picking up the cupcakes on Friday afternoon for the Saturday morning party, I called ahead to be sure they were ready. To my surprise, the cupcakes weren't ready!!!! The order was never made. The owner made an effort to fix the mistake. She baked them fresh Saturday morning and allowed me to pick up before the store opened. I was very pleased with the presentation and taste. Horrible customer service. Dry cupcakes. Sickeningly sweet icing. Having lived in Burlington for a few years, we've seen bakeries come and go but Main Street Cake Shoppe has outlasted their competition and we were excited to try this local bakery for my daughter's upcoming 8th birthday. We would need up to 4 dozen cupcakes. We (my husband, my daughter and I) decided to just stop in, sample of few of their items and get information on pricing, flavors etc. We received no welcome or greet when we entered. The saleswoman simply frowned at us silently. I immediately smiled as we approached the counter to hopefully turn around the very cold atmosphere. She did not smile back. I inquired about cupcake ordering for an upcoming event and her response was short, "Do you have a date?" She did not explain the ordering process, expound on their many flavors, or do anything to cater to a new customer. Understanding that we would be receiving no help, we decided to order 1 of each of the 4 displayed cupcakes to take home and try. Salted caramel pretzel, orange creamsicle, chocolate and vanilla. All four had icings that were very sweet and had a hard crust on the outside. The salted caramel had pretzels on the bottom of the cupcake that may have softened when baked with the batter which gave it a very weird mushy texture. The most important were the chocolate and vanilla as they would probably be chosen for my daughter's birthday. Both cakes had muted flavors and were so dry. I'm not quite sure what put a scowl on the saleswoman's face. It may have been the interracial family that walked in, or the fact that we were all wearing athletic gear, having taken our daughter to the park earlier that day. There was a very large white dry erase board that had rules for customer behavior standing high on their counter in the middle of the shop. It began with the statement that running and screaming children would be warned once and then asked to leave. While I agree with the sentiment, I wonder if that directive is necessary. I do not see such posted signs in bakeries in Greensboro or Chapel Hill. Maybe they do not cater to children. Maybe my quiet 7 year old daughter is what disconcerted her. Maybe this local business does not want the business of good, local families. At 25$ a dozen for a single flavor, my needed 4 dozen would not have been cheap but after the confounding and disheartening way my family was treated combined with the low-quality, unpleasant cupcakes I will gladly pay more and travel farther to bakeries in Greensboro or Chapel Hill. How unbelievably pitying for the residents of Burlington to have no other local option than the unkind, unpalatable bakery that is Main Street Cake Shoppe. read more

One word; BLAH. I hate that I have to give such a low review, but I've given this place so many chances, and I'm constantly disappointed. Not from the staff, they're sweet as pie ( dun dun tsss) but the cakes and other products are less than stellar. Bland, disappointing, nothing that sets this place apart. I've tried cakes, cake pops, cup cakes, you name it... And I'm just extremely disappointed. I do a lot of cooking, I've tasted al to of things, so I'd like to think I have more of a sophisticated taste than the average Joe. But the cakes just take like average boxed cakes with flavor SERIOUSLY lacking. Some of the cakes taste no different than the average Duncan Hines cake box mixes. One of the nurses I work with just brought in a box of different cupcakes from there this afternoon. I tried, once again, the cookie dough cupcake. and it was so disgusting I spit it back out. Had several issues with this bakery. I placed an order on line for a cake after browsing through the pictures that they have posted on "their" website. I payed for the cake online through "their" website. The next day I received a phone call from someone at the bakery telling me that they were the new owners and that my payment was sent to the previous owners. Guess I should've know how disastrous this was going to be once I heard that. They told me that they would have the charges reversed and that I would need to just pay when I went in for pickup. That's not a problem. Upon getting there to pick up the cake that I ordered I am presented with a paper that says all sales are final etc. I don't sign it I ask to see the cake first and good thing that I did. Completely different cake with totally different made roses then the one that was online. Who ever was working decided to tell me "Well it's because they're made with icing. I told them that is why you keep it in the fridge!! To which he responded "The refrigerator is broken!!" I'm sorry but how are you operating a cake shop that uses perishable items as part of the ingredients if you have no working refrigerators. Pretty sure that's a health violation.
