The last time I ate here there were two waitresses screaming as loud as they could at each other arguing about something behind the counter (one exclaimed she was quitting), took a long time to get the food after that. Meal was good over all and the "show" it came with would have been entertaining if my young daughter hadn't been with me. read more

I stopped here while passing through because they supposedly won some "best burger in NC" award. I don't understand that because I can think of at least a dozen places that have much better burgers. I will say the patties are huge, but they lack seasoning and taste like they are made with low fat meat. The grind is also too fine for burgers. Wasn't a fan of the fries either, they are frozen crinkle fries, which would be ok if they were fried properly and crispy on the exterior, but these were lifeless. Out in the middle of nothing but pure country beauty, this little cafe was filled to the brim with customers on a sunny Tuesday lunchtime. Situated next to a butcher shop/grocery at the crossroads of Hurdle Mill Road and Highway 157, it offers daily specials with 2 sides and all the usual southern fare--hush puppies, killer cole slaw, black-eyed peas, green beans, beets, cajun fries, etc. The waitress said she took the job just to learn the chicken salad and cole slaw recipes and she wasn't lying--they were good, good, good. We got the BBQ and it also did not disappoint!!! Bring a cooler and stop into the shop next door to take some freshly butchered, well-priced meats. PS. They cook food a day or so ahead of time and just warm stuff up. Service is not bad but should watch what they say or talk about in front of customers. The place itself needs major updating and should consider paying there team a actual fair wage and treat them with more respect. With the things they do there I'm surprised they haven't gave anyone food poisoning at this point. read more

I have enjoyed a few meals at this restaurant however each time I see an issue getting worse . I have been in the restaurant business for over 20 years and never see management be this rude to customers plus her appearance leaves something to be desired. I'm sure that the owner means well and has no idea what is going on in the front of the house . you should steer clear of this place until I get this mess straightened out. read more

This is a nice little down-home country place. We were there for lunch and it had a pretty good crowd. They serve up BBQ, burgers, cheese steaks, and other simple fare. The food is quite good and the staff is friendly and accommodating. Additional benefit: The drive to it along 57 and 157 is very scenic and bucolic. So, go on a country drive and stop in this little place and have some good food. Its not far from Hillsborough. You might want to bring a cooler if coming in the summertime. The attached grocery has some very interesting looking hams that look like they could be quite tasty. read more

Great country food, all fresh and served with a smile. Monday's lunch special Is hamburger steak with gravy and grilled onions and peppers, which I had with mashed potatoes, great coleslaw, and hot, crunchy hush puppies. Everything was made from scratch. Breakfast is great. The biscuits are perfect, seriously. They do a dinner allegedly on Friday night - 2 NY Strips and 2 sides for $25 per couple. By the looks of it, it's BYO ... so you could probably hit this for a cheap dinner (with your Yellow Tail Shiraz in tow), then head back to Hillsborough for some drinkin'. read more

We ran into the Flat River Cafe while exploring the countryside north of Hillsborough. It was lunch hour when we walked in and saw a table full of roofers/carpenters scarfing thick hamburgers and sandwiches with French fries. We sat down and ordered the BBQ and Hamburger steak with choice of veggies and hush puppies. Good chow! The hush puppies were light, not greasy, nicely browned, and very tasty. I'd go back just for a side of the hush puppies! Maybe not worth a trip from CH or Durham, but good simple food served up quickly and with a smile. read more

I have only been for breakfast and have always been very pleased with thr foor and service. You will not find a more relaxed and friendly place. It seem simple to cook an egg but many placed can not. Flat River might be the best I have ever had, especialy with a greta piece of tender loin and awsom biscutes. Nedd to really get back for lunch. One review said it was a little fae to drive from Durham or Hillborough. If you are tired of fast food and would like to have a meal with people that really appreciated your bussiness and always thanks and come back this is the place. Had lunch here with a friend on Tuesday, September 9. The lunch special was Pork Chops, grilled or fried. I opted for the fried variety and must say they would have my momma proud. Accompanied with sauteed squash and onions and pickled beets, it was as good a meal as I've had in some time. We were "just passing through", but next time we'll be going there "on purpose". In town for business and I was passing by and saw that the parking lot was very full. With that being said, I figured I would stop and see what the hype was all about. I'm very glad I did, the staff was very friendly and attentive. The food was great, I ordered the hamburger steak with sides of squash and mashed potatoes. I saved some room for dessert and I ordered the sweet potato pie and it was baked with a meringue topping, it was great! I also ordered the banana pudding. Don't let the small portion full you! This is just like Grandmas homemade banana pudding!! I can't tell you how many times I was told the banana pudding was great and when it comes out it's as bland as eating plain old vanilla pudding from a box and few vanilla wafers tossed in. With not a sight of a banana as there aren't any monkeys near by either. This was far from boring and if you happen to see it on the whiteboard as the dessert of the day, do yourself a favor and order it. You won't be disappointed. But do let me say, it's very sweet but very good!! read more
