Hands down, my favorite place to go! Molasses Grill has easily become mine and my husband's favorite date night spot. The ambiance is always perfect, from the music to the lighting, candles, decor, and of course, the absolutely delicious food! Everything is always fresh and you can tell that the chef really puts his time in when making these amazing dishes. The attention to detail, flavors, and diversity of the menu truly sets this place apart. One of my favorite things about dining at Molasses is talking to the adorable women who work here. Everyone is always super friendly, but if you get the chance to dine with Jordan the bartender or Cristina the server, you are in for a great time. Best restaurant in Halifax County. I would even say one of the best in the state. I've never had a bad meal here. Their pasta dishes are always great, and the desserts are incredible. Some of my favorites are the Sticky Molasses Pudding, Creme Brulé, and Key Lime Pie. They also have great seasonal cocktails and a nice selection of beers. The atmosphere is great too: lots of space and some cool artwork on the walls, some of it created by the chef himself. The servers are friendly, knowledgeable, and highly attentive. I really can't say enough nice things about this place. Do yourself a favor and give them a visit! read more

Wow! This popular local joint was packed and rocking with festive diners the Sunday night that we first dined there. It was three days before Christmas and fortunately, at the advice of a Yelper, we had a 7:00 reservation which was, as it turned out, imperative. Based on the crowdsize and the Yelp reviews, my wife and I had high expectations, most of which were met. Located in a beautifully renovated historic building on Main St in Halifax, the dining area consists of somewhat tightly packed tables surrounding an L-shaped bar that seats 12-15. Original features such as tin squared ceilings and exposed brick walls contributed to its charm. Service was friendly and attentive from beginning to end. The do-it-call red-aproned owner, Chef Stephen, was regularly seen out and about, hobnobbing cheerfully with guests who appeared to be regulars. Mealwise, things started out a little shakey however for us. My wife had to carefully pick thru her baby greens salad due to some slimy leaves of red leaf lettuce (one of our biggest pet peeves); otherwise, at $6, it was excellent as it was loaded with scads of housemade candied pecans and goat cheese. The dressing was also delicious. Her wine, a dry house rose, was unspectacular, but then again it was only $7. Things looked up with our entrees, which arrived about 50 minutes later. My crabcakes (at $21) were golden brown and perfectly done on one side but a bit dark on the other. The sweet potato fries were fabulous (maybe the best I've ever had) and were lightly battered and fried, but not greasy at all. My other side, spinach cole slaw, was also sweet, vinegary and tasty. My wife ordered the Pork Tenderloin entree, served with mashed sweet potatoes, black eyed pea medley and collard greens, for $18. It was highly recommended by our server and other Yelpers. She did enjoy it, but it was served somewhat lukewarm, no doubt a victim of the full house. She should have requested it be nuked but when you pay $20 per entree, you shouldn't have to. We finished off splitting a piece of their highly touted coconut-pineapple cake. Delivered by Chef Stephen, it was as delicious as advertised, and although evil, a must. Overall, despite a few blips in our case and in an area lacking other fine dining options, this place is definitely a Gotta Try. Remember though, reservations are a must! read more

This restaurant was recommended and it did not disappoint. The hostess was welcoming, our server was excellent and the food delicious! Christina was so personable, made great recommendations, asked questions of likes and dislikes and ensured things were to our liking. Even as we were closing the restaurant down, we did not feel rushed to leave and enjoyed nice conversations with Christina. The special, not on the menu, heirloom tomato appetizer was delicious! We also ordered the grilled oysters and vichyssoise to start. For entrées we ordered the trout and salmon which were prepared perfectly. The homemade coconut cake was melt in your mouth good as well as the homemade blueberry goat cheese ice cream. For anyone that stays in South Boston or the Halifax area this is the go to restaurant. Unfortunately it is open only Thursday through Sunday so if you're not there on a Thursday night as a traveler you will not be able to experience it. The food is incredible and I would get there early. There is space at the bar but many locals know to get there early and sit down. The service is quick and attentive and the options are absolutely delicious. It is a quaint little informal restaurant with some of the best food I've ever tasted on the road. We were in the area for our 30th wedding anniversary and had dinner at the Molasses Grill, based on the recommendation from our Airbnb host. To say it was amazing is an understatement! My husband is very picky; literally meat and potatoes only, and likes his steak well done. He ordered a ribeye with a baked potato; he said it was cooked to perfection and was literally the best steak he'd ever eaten in his life! Wow! I ordered the salmon with asparagus and it was equally delicious, as well! Our waiter was the best, unfortunately, I can't remember his name...but he was very attentive; never let our glass run dry and offered us a 2nd basket of bread, which was also delicious! The ambience in the room was great; low light/a romantic atmosphere. I can't recommend this restaurant enough; we'll definitely visit again, if we're in the area! A+ read more

If I could give this restaurant 6 stars I would. If you're within 150 miles of Halifax Virginia it is well worth the drive. The waitress was perfectly attentive and brought out warm bread and butter to start. The menu is locally sourced ingredients. I started with A half dozen oysters which were delicious. For my entree I had the Catfish with corn potatoes and andouille sausage with a remoulade sauce. I'm not a catfish fan but this was delicious. I had no room for dessert but was enticed to try the coconut cake I had seen recommended. Again an excellent choice. The slice of cake was huge. I also tasted their paw paw crème brûlée which was.....as you guessed Deeelicious. One caveat is don't forget to make a reservation as this place is deservedly busy. read more

My husband and I love this place. We eat here about once a year to celebrate our anniversary or a birthday. Hubby usually gets the 16-oz steak and I get the Parmesan crusted salmon. I love the asparagus, and anything else I have tried. The steak is always done just the way my husband likes it - medium rare. I usually get the cheesecake for dessert. My husband always gets their homemade ice cream. We were there tonight for an early Valentine's Day dinner and our server was Daniel. He was very attentive without hovering. We had the room in the basement so it was nice and quiet. Do not try to come here without a reservation. This place is always full of happy customers. The owner almost always makes his rounds to check to see how the food is and if we are satisfied. His wife knows their regulars and she stops by as well. I was visiting my friend who brought me to Molasses and it is the cutest restaurant, with the best food, staff, and service! We had the grilled and baked oysters, both of which were delicious, but we both said we liked the baked better with the melted cheese and wilted greens. We also enjoyed a couple dirty martinis and the bartender even stuffed some olives with blue cheese for us. We shared the twin lobster tails, with broccolini & mac and cheese and left nothing...the whole meal was wonderful. One of the nicest places to eat in Halifax. Beautiful restaurant with Greta ambiance. A variety of delicious souther classics but elevated. The waitresses are friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. I got the calamari which was cooked & seasoned perfectly. Main course was a burger because I wanted a "light" dinner. I was in the area for a track weekend with another car enthusiast and we ate dinner at Molasses Grill. This little gem of a restaurant in South Boston has been open for 18 years. It is a clean, upscale atmosphere without being pretentious or stuffy. The staff are friendly, competent and accommodating. The food is outstanding. We shared the hickory grilled oysters as an appetizer and they were very tasty. I had a scallop special for my entree and he had the ribeye steak. Both dishes were excellent and perfectly prepared. The sides were as well. Portions are generous and even though we were stuffed, the bourbon pecan pie and coconut cake were too good to pass up. I will bring my wife here the next time we are in the area. It is worth going out of the way to get here. read more

Virginia magazine put the Molasses Grill on their Virginia bucket list of the 25 restaurants to dine in before you die. This restaurant locally sources the majority of their food that is rotated seasonally. You can't go wrong with any of their appetizers or any of their warm oyster platters. They have a slew of staples from an interesting take on shrimp and grits to their hanger steak that's always cooked to perfection. They really go next level when you order any of their daily specials that have ranged from duck two ways, rutabaga fries, and many variations of fish just to name a few. If you have food allergies or would just prefer a different item don't be afraid to ask as they are more than accommodating. Their craft beer game and craft cocktails are on point for being in such a small town. Wonderful meal once again. The service has improved since the last time we were here for work but I didn't think the food was quite as good as last time. I do like how most of the food is locally sourced though! Also, the dark chocolate cherry brownie was to-die-for. Thumbs up to their pastry chef for the creative dessert options. One small thing to mention. I am extremely picky about my orange juice. When I asked the waitress about the type of orange juice they serve, she was unable to answer my question but did offer me a sample of the orange juice to ensure that I would be happy with the taste before ordering it. In the end I felt the orange juice tasted like concentrate, but I really appreciated the waitress taking the extra step to make sure I would be happy with my drink, despite it being something nonalcoholic and as silly as orange juice. We had another excellent meal at Molasses. The Calamari was delicious, scallops were perfectly cooked with some of the tastiest cherry tomatoes I have ever eaten (It's only July). My wife's pesto linguini was loaded with veggies and flavor but the best part of the night was desert. It was Blueberry goat cheese ice cream sandwich between molasses cookies with Lemon creme. Even the mint garnish was tasty. We had the kitchen split it to avoid arguments! Our waitress was Amber, and she was one of the best we have ever had. A hidden fine dining gem in a small town. Local beers. Simple Menu. Great ambiance. There aren't many things a restaurant needs to get right to be a good establishment (and impress me!). When I travel, I want to drink and taste the local cuisine. So when Molasses Grill was serving local brews on draft, that was a huge highlight for me. They had a draft Rye IPA which was fantastic and unique. The bread they served was warm and super fresh. We started off with a calamari, which was crispy but well-paired with a tomato caper sauce on the bottom. None of that tartar sauce nonsense here. I like that.I ordered a pork tenderloin, which was complemented with roasted mashed sweet potato, black eyed peas and collared greens. Fantastic. Pork was tender, and the sides were all properly seasoned and not overpowering. The sweet molasses based sauce (true to its name) was also a great juxtaposition to the heartiness of everything else.If I come back here, I would try the shrimp and grits - my coworker ordered that and it looked fantastic. The place is packed on a Thursday night, and it seems like the entire town had come out to grab dinner here. People in the town are very courteous, and that added to the surroundings. The place was dimly lit, not very loud, and everything felt pretty clean (no sticky tables or crumb-covered chairs here!). Prices were fair for fine dining. probably more so considering the great food and the fact that I'm used to SF levels of price gouging. $12ish for calarami appetizer. 18-20 bucks for a salmon/shrimp & grits/pork tenderloin, maximum is $30 for a ribeye steak. My only gripe would be that it did take some time for the waiter to finally swing over and take our order for food, and that one side of the pork was slightly burnt. But that's just me being picky; you should definitely swing by here if you have the chance. read more

This place is a stellar find. This is an absolutely fantastic restaurant, not just for the area, but could hold its own in Chicago, NY or SF. Most is local sourced ingredients, and some items are seasonal (so see the menu). Good selection of craft beers and local wines. They could definitely improve their wine list. The list had no years and had entries like chateaunuef-du-pape, and cornas with no associated producer. Also, the server wasnt very good at explaining wine. Mixed up cab franc and cab sauvignon, and called a local viogner "light and crisp" (not so much). So realistically 2 stars for the wine list. The food however was amazing. From the melt-in-your mouth calimari, to homemade andouille sausage and grits, to the sweet potato salmon, the simple but amazing balsamic grilled veggies. Stupendous, but the best single thing I've eaten in a long, long time was a simple appetizer of smoked chincoteague oysters on the half shell with a butter-shallot-tabasco sauce. Wow, just wow!
