Listen this is a GEM one of the most delicious steak cooked to perfection. This was wonderful dining experience. It is great vibe in this place!!! I enjoyed the chef who is personal care and greeted the table.

Heirloom Tomato Salad

This restaurant was recommended and it did not disappoint. The hostess was welcoming, our server was excellent and the food delicious! Christina was so personable, made great recommendations, asked questions of likes and dislikes and ensured things were to our liking. Even as we were closing the restaurant down, we did not feel rushed to leave and enjoyed nice conversations with Christina. The special, not on the menu, heirloom tomato appetizer was delicious! We also ordered the grilled oysters and vichyssoise to start. For entrées we ordered the trout and salmon which were prepared perfectly. The homemade coconut cake was melt in your mouth good as well as the homemade blueberry goat cheese ice cream. If you get a chance to go, enjoy a meal and ask to be seated in Christina's section.

If I could give this restaurant 6 stars I would. If you're within 150 miles of Halifax Virginia it is well worth the drive. The waitress was perfectly attentive and brought out warm bread and butter to start. The menu is locally sourced ingredients. I started with A half dozen oysters which were delicious. For my entree I had the Catfish with corn potatoes and andouille sausage with a remoulade sauce. I'm not a catfish fan but this was delicious. I had no room for dessert but was enticed to try the coconut cake I had seen recommended. Again an excellent choice. The slice of cake was huge. I also tasted their paw paw crème brûlée which was.....as you guessed Deeelicious. One caveat is don't forget to make a reservation as this place is deservedly busy.

This is one of the best restaurants around. I've come here twice and both times the food has been wonderful! The chef came out to check on the food while we were there, which you really don't see very often. It's best to make reservations, because this place stays booked! I didn't know that the first time I visited, but they still allowed us to sit at a table outside anyway.

Wow! This popular local joint was packed and rocking with festive diners the Sunday night that we first dined there. It was three days before Christmas and fortunately, at the advice of a Yelper, we had a 7:00 reservation which was, as it turned out, imperative. Based on the crowdsize and the Yelp reviews, my wife and I had high expectations, most of which were met. Located in a beautifully renovated historic building on Main St in Halifax, the dining area consists of somewhat tightly packed tables surrounding an L-shaped bar that seats 12-15. Original features such as tin squared ceilings and exposed brick walls contributed to its charm. Service was friendly and attentive from beginning to end. The do-it-call red-aproned owner, Chef Stephen, was regularly seen out and about, hobnobbing cheerfully with guests who appeared to be regulars. Mealwise, things started out a little shakey however for us. My wife had to carefully pick thru her baby greens salad due to some slimy leaves of red leaf lettuce (one of our biggest pet peeves); otherwise, at $6, it was excellent as it was loaded with scads of housemade candied pecans and goat cheese. The dressing was also delicious. Her wine, a dry house rose, was unspectacular, but then again it was only $7. Things looked up with our entrees, which arrived about 50 minutes later. My crabcakes (at $21) were golden brown and perfectly done on one side but a bit dark on the other. The sweet potato fries were fabulous (maybe the best I've ever had) and were lightly battered and fried, but not greasy at all. My other side, spinach cole slaw, was also sweet, vinegary and tasty. My wife ordered the Pork Tenderloin entree, served with mashed sweet potatoes, black eyed pea medley and collard greens, for $18. It was highly recommended by our server and other Yelpers. She did enjoy it, but it was served somewhat lukewarm, no doubt a victim of the full house. She should have requested it be nuked but when you pay $20 per entree, you shouldn't have to. We finished off splitting a piece of their highly touted coconut-pineapple cake. Delivered by Chef Stephen, it was as delicious as advertised, and although evil, a must. Overall, despite a few blips in our case and in an area lacking other fine dining options, this place is definitely a Gotta Try. Remember though, reservations are a must!

I have been eating here since it first opened. My favorite is the sweet-potato crusted salmon, but everything on the menu is perfect.

The bartender greeted me and asked if I wanted the regular menu or was the lunch menu sufficient. I perused the lunch menu, which had several different options. Surprisingly, everything on that menu was half price! What a deal! I ordered the most expensive item, the catfish sandwich, which was only $10. Even though they were very busy, I got my sandwich within ten minutes. They call it a sandwich but there ain't no way I could eat it like a sandwich, even with my big mouth. The catfish came with onion, lettuce, tomato, and some kind of sauce on a toasted sub roll. It came with a knife. I cut off the first bite. It was .......... GREAT! Wow! I have always gotten BBQ or fish tacos before. Fantastic blending of flavors. It came with a choice of a side and I chose fries. The fries were barely alive. Good flavor but partially limp. That was the only negative. I wish I lived closer to Farmville. I would make them regular visits during the week. They keep teasing us about expanding to Madison Heights but no action yet.

Tldr: good value meal and would recommend if you happened to be in Farmville but wouldn't…read morenecessarily wait in line for it We went for a Saturday lunch and did not have to wait at all. Between two people, we ordered drinks and Billy's seafood platter to share, which consisted of shrimp that you can choose the style of, fried cod and catfish, with hush puppies and cole slaw. We got the bang bang shrimp and they were on point. They were definitely our favorite thing on this platter with the size, texture, and flavor all hitting the mark. The two sides hush puppies and cole slaws were also good. The two fried fish was a little underwhelming, with the cod being a little under-seasoned and dry. The catfish was seasoned well and soft but had that sort of slightly fishy flavor to it. I liked having multiple sauces both on the platter and the table (there were a bunch of different bbq sauces, which I'm sure go better with their meat offerings) - the butter and the zing of the North Carolina hot sauce were our top two sauces of the meal. Definitely enough food for two people but I wish there was a bit more on there than just the cole slaw to suppress the greasiness of the fried fish. Service was great and they have a good sized parking lot as well. Can't say anything about their bbq since we had the fish platter but as soon as you get to the parking lot, you can smell the fire going!

Upscale without being stiff, comfortable without losing that polished feel. I ordered the jambalaya, and it was a standout. Well layered flavor, not overly heavy, with a nice balance of spice and richness. The proteins were cooked properly and the vegetables still had structure, which matters in a dish like that. It felt intentional, not just thrown together for a brunch menu. Across the table, the Eggs Benedict was equally strong. The hollandaise was smooth and properly seasoned, not overly lemony or thick, and the eggs were cooked right where they should be. That is often where places miss, but this one didn't. Dessert was where things really elevated. The strawberry cheesecake was clean, bright, and not overly sweet, with a good texture that held together without being dense. The chocolate Rasberry glutin-free dessert torte, was rich in the right way. Deep chocolate flavor without crossing into heavy or overwhelming. Service was attentive without hovering, and timing between courses was well paced, which is not easy on a busy holiday like Easter. Overall, this is a place that clearly pays attention to execution. Not just presentation, but flavor, balance, and consistency. That is what separates a good brunch from one you remember. We will be back.

Server wasn't much help and said she was new. Service was slow and embarrassingly bad. Our food was subpar and nothing to write home about (we didn't even take photos) - the best bite was the Thai Chili sauce Brussels. 3 out of 4 at our table had a that a veg side and everyone liked them! My wife had a the filet, which wasn't very tender. We came for dinner based on advertisement of a James Beard award winning chef. We've been to many restaurants (not in LYH) that have a James Beard award winning chef- don't be fooled this one wasn't!!!

Charley's Waterfront Cafe - Garden salad

Charley's Waterfront Cafe

It was my first time visiting Farmville, and I wanted to check out a local restaurant for dinner. I…read moredid notice that Charley's had varied reviews but the more recent ones seemed positive, so we gave it a go for dinner. It was a nice day, so we asked to sit outside. As a party of two, they don't allow you to sit waterside, because, as I heard the host tell most every party that arrived after us as well, those tables are reserved for larger groups. So, keep that in mind if you're looking for waterside dining. We were seated next to the door, and I didn't notice until halfway through the meal that my chair was covered in cobwebs. Kind of gross. The floor to the exterior patio was also very dirty. My mom was stomping away at ants. I'd recommend they consider cleaning more outside, especially considering it's the main allure of the restaurant. After being seated, our server greeted us. She was overall friendly albeit a bit slow, and when I asked which Riesling was sweeter (they had two), she didn't know. She asked a manager, who replied that he can't drink on shift. It was a polarity compared to the service the table next to us later received from the bartender, who provided samples to them and was on top of things for them the entire meal. I was mildly jealous, honestly. Without the option to sample, I selected a Riesling at random (the German one), and it was fortunately very good. I also heard the sparkling Moscato was pleasant. We ordered the jumbo pretzel to start, which came with a tasty cheese mixture. I would say that's where the good part ended for me. My mom didn't want our salads to arrive with the pretzel, so she asked for them to be spaced out, but then it took aaaaages for the salads to come out. The cheese on the ceasar was good, but that's about it. I couldn't taste any dressing, so I left most of it behind. I was torn in between the mahi and red snapper entrees, but ultimately chose the red snapper despite the server calling it fishy. I asked for extra sauce when I ordered it, but it came with regular sauce, so I asked again. It took some time to arrive as the kitchen had to heat it up, but when it did arrive, it was a TINY amount. I was so perplexed. The fish itself was not that great. It didn't taste fresh to me. My mom ordered the ribs, as they were explained to be really good and "fall off the bone." Can attest they were not. They were actually very fatty. They never should've left the kitchen. I relayed this feedback to our server, and she took both of our meals off the bill since we didn't eat them. I was shocked but thought that was very kind of her. I'd say this spot needs some more quality control between food and cleanliness. I'm unlikely to return personally, but it's worth a shot if you're in town and interested in waterfront dining or a nice glass of wine, I suppose.
