Super disappointment. I accompanied a friend who likes this place. Now have lived in the New York City metro area and attended college and lived in Washington DC where there are amazing Greek and Mediterranean restaurants so I knew what I was ordering. I have also expertly created spanakopita and baklava myself. So, I ordered the spanakopita and baklava for dessert. The spanakopita had a weird stale taste. I ordered 2 of them, opened one up to look inside, there was a raw dough like substance, I did not see any feta cheese. The other had a small blob of what appeared to be cheese in it. The phyllo dough was not firm on the outside. If I was not so hungry I would have thrown it in the trash. The baklava was awful! Awful, awful, awful! The phyllo dough was not crisp it was soft and the inside was not tasty at all. I was expecting a honey-like inside with walnuts or pistachio. I requested that they warm it, thinking that it would in an oven that may take the chill off of the inside and crisp up the outside and the guy put it in the microwave. Terrible customer service. While I'm Hillsboro delivering packages for work I stopped in because I wasn't feeling well and needed to put something on my stomach and to grab a cup of ice. I waited at the register for 5 mins before the gentleman behind the counter came to take my order. From there I purchased a gyro the gentleman had a sour attitude and yet I paid him no attention. I then asked for a cup of ice and was told it would be a dollar. That plus the amount for the sandwich would've been the same as me getting a combo. So I'm going to be up charged and not get fries. And all for a cup of ice I honestly drink 85% water, 2% juice or soda, 13% alcohol routinely. Not only is that highway robbery but you have to be rude. I was good on the food and cup of ice. I assume it was the owner, but he offered me a cake and a few suggestions while I was making my choice. I ended up ordering the lamb gyro plate and it was delicious. Came in as we were passing through from Burlington to Cary. Figured to eat and avoid traffic. Found this place by looking on maps and zooming in. The food came out quick and just how we ordered it. Don't let the name fool you - this place serves more than just American food and more than just Heros. American Hero is the classic 70s lunch counter. Everything from the old school menu to the red and white checkered plastic tablecloths screams retro. While you may walk into the place thinking about a sandwich you will see that the selection is quite broad. Yes they have subs that are pretty good but they also have Italian dishes (which I have not ventured to try) and Mediterranean dishes like falafel and gyro which are A-OK. The menu is reasonably priced for lunch ($6-7) and they have a wide range of both bottled and fountain drinks. No alcohol as far as I can tell. They do have a display case of cakes but I've never seen anyone eat them and I'm not sure I'm willing to try either. read more

We ate here at an odd hour (3:30pm on a saturday) so that may have had some influence on it, but the food was a bit overly salty (and im not shy of salty goodness). I had the Gyro pita combo and my wife had the Gyro Plater (basically Gyro meat on a large Mediterranean salad) and we added a large side of onion rings. Simple fare. Food was finished quickly and the service was good, the tables were clean etc... just the meal was somewhat uninspired. Worse i suppose is the Taziki was just yogurt with barely any seasonings. This is really unfortunate because we had just concluded a 5mile hike at Eno River state park, and were very hungry, so even given that, it just didn't impress. Price wise, not bad not great, it was about 22 bucks for all aforementiond and i gave them a 6$ tip -- portions were of good size so i suppose it wasn't the end of the world. I'll give it another shot sometime in the near future and will provide another review at that point. Point of issue i have with the place: There are numerous signs stating that if customers give them a 5-star review here on yelp (and/or a few other review sites), then said customer gets a $1 or 2 discount on their order. I work in the area and Greek food is my favorite so I am disappointed to have such a negative experience. I ordered online. I went to pick up the food at the time it was to be ready and noticed that people arriving after me were picking up their food. I asked at the counter and they pulled off a ticket from a side counter without apologizing or acknowledging it was forgotten. They mumbled something "about the front" which I assumed meant they were putting my order at the front of the line. I sat another ten minutes and then noticed people coming in and ordering were getting their food before me. I went up again and they said "well, we told you it would be at the front". With two people working there preparing food at the grill and a slow restaurant, they could see me waiting the whole time. By then the food was cold and it was a very sad Greek platter. I have never received such rude treatment at a restaurant. If you order here, just know you may be treated rudely (as other reviews state) and don't order online! read more

We also ordered fries (they come with/without seasoning salt) and our food was ready in minutes. They're a nice restaurant. It's an "order in line and pay at the end when you receive your food" sort of place. The meats are cut fresh (a HUGE PLUS compared to those $5 sub places) and the toppings are generous. Someone behind us ordered a Greek Salad and it looked delightful (and plentiful!). There's a large array of desserts, fountain beverages, sides and subs - hot & cold. There are gyros, hummus platters, plated meals, and salads. I'm not exactly sure what this place DOESN'T serve. They also had "baklva" as the sign said. I passed, but the dessert fridge was very appealing. They even have an ice cream freezer for those ice pops, cookie sandwich and ice cream cravings. I really like this place and have no idea why I don't eat here as much as I should. It's almost as health (I think) as the $5 sub, but I think you get more food for a competitive price. Would give this place 2.5 stars. Food is very average. Not terrible, not great. Got a chicken philly, chicken wings, French fries, and a salad. It's food you can really get anywhere, but it cost a lot here. They give you bare minimum, one serving of ranch to split between my salad and wings. When I asked if I only got one, I was told I "can choose which one to use it on", the salad or wings. Wanted to try the place out, wasn't expecting anything great, probably won't go again. If it was cheaper, it might be more of an option. Jay's Chicken Shack is a walk away with similar options. Unfortunately, there aren't more options in the area than fast food. read more

I'm not sure how this place has good reviews to be completely honest. The only thought I can come up with is that the people of Hillsborough are simply used to mediocre food so they enjoy mediocrity? I got the chicken gyro platter which was a Greek salad and rice topped with chicken and a side of toasted pita. Sounds great right? Turns out their Greek salad is romaine lettuce olives and feta with oil and vinegar on top, and their chicken is this strange paper thin fake chicken. Very mediocre food for sure. My friend got a sub, and he didn't think it was better than your average subway visit. Go to meditaranian deli in chapel Hill for Greek food, go to Jersey Mike's or even Jimmy John's for subs. read more

My family and I love this place- a hidden gem in Hillsborough. We usually get the Mediterranean food, but their other food is good too. The gyro platters are delicious, and more than you can eat in one meal. Their chicken orzo soup is one of the best soups I have ever had. The broth is incredibly flavorful.
