    Lamb Gyro Platter

I came in around 12:30 Pm on my lunch break. I was immediately greeted with friendly smiles from behind the counter. I assume it was the owner, but he offered me a cake and a few suggestions while I was making my choice. I ended up ordering the lamb gyro plate and it was delicious. Definitely made fresh and was happy to discover this awesome place. Clean facilities and definitely will be back soon!

Food was amazing! Fast and friendly service. We were passing through and looking for a quick, healthy lunch. This place was perfect!

Came in as we were passing through from Burlington to Cary. Figured to eat and avoid traffic. Found this place by looking on maps and zooming in. The food came out quick and just how we ordered it. I got the veggie patty which I think may be made in house and it is good! My daughter got the regular burger and she gives it ::: thumbs up :::. There are free refills too. Plenty of seating but probably because we are in between lunch and dinner. The I'd come back!

Don't let the name fool you - this place serves more than just American food and more than just Heros. American Hero is the classic 70s lunch counter. Everything from the old school menu to the red and white checkered plastic tablecloths screams retro. While you may walk into the place thinking about a sandwich you will see that the selection is quite broad. Yes they have subs that are pretty good but they also have Italian dishes (which I have not ventured to try) and Mediterranean dishes like falafel and gyro which are A-OK. The menu is reasonably priced for lunch ($6-7) and they have a wide range of both bottled and fountain drinks. No alcohol as far as I can tell. They do have a display case of cakes but I've never seen anyone eat them and I'm not sure I'm willing to try either.

Good food. Nice people. The look is nothing special, but it's worth the visit. Chicken parm sub was tasty. Can't wait to go back for falafel

So far I have tried the gyros (on top of rice) and a meatball sub, both of which were very good.

Service is very friendly, and as quick as possible, considering that stuff seems to be made to order. I ordered a chicken kebab platter which comes over a bed of basmati rice, possibly with saffron. Whatever the rice tasted great and it wasn't dry like at a lot of places. The chicken was marinated in a tangy yogurt-spice mix, grilled and topped with a tahini sauce. Delicious! As sides I got mujadara and roasted vegetables which were also tasty. I'll be back for takeout for sure in the future.

"Bodega-like Mediterranean Grill & Grocery in Parkwood area of Durham"…read more This place is WAY off the beaten path for most, but I'm so happy to have gotten to try it out. Nestled in a little strip between a Muslim school and a mosque is this grill and grocery. We came on a Wednesday evening, and almost every table was already taken by diners. You order your food at a counter, and it has the Middle Eastern foods you'd expect-- kofta, shawarma, gyros, falafel, baba ghanouj, hummus, baklava, etc. I opted for the lamb gyro sandwich with a side of baba ghanouj, and my dining partner had the falafel sandwich. They call your number when it's ready. Food took maybe 10 minutes to receive, so we browsed the market area. It's not a huge selection, but very traditional-- nice seeing so many labels in Arabic, and along with standards (e.g., canned fava beans for Ful Medames), they also had things like frozen chopped mulukhiyah leaves-- that's definitely a rarer sight. Lots of good spices too. The food was EXCELLENT. The lamb was juicy and perfect (unlike what another Yelp review said), the tzatziki sauce was delicious, and the baba ghanouj was perfectly cooked and textured. I had a small bite of the falafel, and it was indeed one of the best I've had in the US. Price was fair, too-- the sandwiches are all under $10 before tax and tip, and making it a combo with side and drink cost just something like $2.50. And service was friendly-- although they called out numbers, they did walk out with the food to try to find and bring you your dishes. And while it was an older space, it was overall still generally clean. Overall, I'd VERY happily come back.

My Knufe Pancake was just the right mix of sweet and savory, an unexpected hit. I give all five stars for this visit! The Deets: Some friends in Durham invited my for brunch and we decided to hit the Sunday brunch over at Nikos in Brightleaf Square this time. This Greek restaurant has recently been included as a "Selected Restaurant" within the 2025 Michelin Guide so with that and seeing their pretty interesting brunch menu, I was in (considering Greek cuisine is usually not one of my go-to foods, I was still intrigued). We had a reservation right as they opened and it did not take long at all for Nikos to have almost every table full quickly so the word is out. The atmosphere is very bistro like in feel and appearance. Our very helpful and positive server Maggie made sure we had our menus and took our drink/starter orders. I went with a hot latte that was perfect when delivered. I also enjoyed one of their mocktails in the Athena Blush (muddle cranberry, lemongrass, apple tea, and club soda) in that it was a great combination of flavors with successfully avoiding being too sweet as mocktails most often can be. We noshed on some great tzatziki (Greek yogurt, cucumber, garlic, lemon) for starters that came with pita but we also ordered their sourdough bread. It took a bit longer to get that sourdough loaf but it was so worth it...warm, fresh, and so delicious! For my main, I went with the Knufe Pancake (filled with mozzarella cheese and kataifi, topped with pistachio praline and served with a side of warm lemon maple sauce). I loved it. It was just enough sweet and savory both to satisfy me. I am glad that the warm lemon maple sauce was served on the side...I took a few bites with it and liked it but I found it much better for my tastes to be paired with the pistachio praline that topped the pancake. My friends thoroughly enjoyed their selections (see my pics for their meals) as well. I am so glad I ventured a bit out of my comfort zone and went with brunch here at Nikos...it was wonderful, I highly recommend!

Unfortunately, this visit was extremely disappointing, especially given the importance of the occasion and the amount we spent. The service was very slow, and the overall experience simply did not match the standard that brought us back in the first place. While the manager did apologize and brought an extra dish to the table, the repeated apologies did not really make up for the poor pacing and frustration during brunch. The menu has a lot of variety but there are no substitutions or adding protein to a salad.... But the food was good! Since the food took a while -spirits were dampened. This is a great place for two to four people but since we were a party over six, our server was guaranteed a 20 percent tip -so maybe there was no incentive for great service.

We tried the hummus and pita, which was delicious. She mentioned their falafel was one of their best items, so I had to try it. It came with four pieces. They were piping hot and so good. I dipped them in the hummus. I also ordered the chicken kabab (marinated chicken with peppers, onions, and tomatoes over their homemade rice. I asked for no tomatoes and the beef shawarma plate with a Greek salad and tahini sauce. The food was good. I loved the Greek salad with big chunks of tomatoes. The chicken kabab (which she did explain did not come in a skewer) was a bit dry. I dipped it in the hummus. It lacked a bit of presentation. Something that took me by surprise was that we were given our food on paper plates, with paper cups and plastic forks, even though we were eating inside the restaurant. Not sure if it's the same for all lunch and/or dinner. The owner is very nice and I truly appreciated her letting us eat there even though it was close to closing hour. I took the rest of the hummus and pita to go so they could close at 2:30pm. Overall, great experience and good food.

The disappointing part was that they were already out of the Doner plate by 2:30 p.m., even though we came for dinner service. It was frustrating because that's one of the main dishes people go there for. What really stopped me from giving this place a higher rating was the condition of the men's bathroom. It was pretty gross, with visible mold and a wet towel on the floor that looked like it was there because of a leaking toilet. A lot of people say the bathroom reflects how clean the restaurant is overall, and honestly that crossed my mind while eating there. The food and service were good, but the restaurant really needs to improve the cleanliness and do a better job keeping popular menu items available.
