Helena K's review has got tons of good info, so I'll just add some more details: - veggie burger is BEAN based, I asked the manager or co-owner (he seemed important). - their milkshakes are delicious, but very heavy. I recommend a small, a large is a bit much even when sharing. - they have an amazing selection of no-charge toppings, go crazy. After Susan's first visit to Buns last week, she bought some kind of coupon and wanted to come back again the very next weekend. I've been to Buns a few times and I've always been a fan, so it must be time to sit down and write a review. I always get the veggie burger when I come here because it really is one of the best veggie burgers I've had, and I never find myself craving meat when I order it. The veggie patty is bean based and packs a lot of flavor, but you can also add a load of interesting toppings. We tried the pimento cheese burger (with some other toppings like tomato, onion, pickle, etc) and the goat cheese & roasted beet burger. Both of these were excellent, and there are about 8 other custom burgers to choose from if you don't know exactly what you want on your burger. I especially love getting fries here because they have great dipping sauces available: ketchup, yellow mustard, dijon mustard, mayo, pesto mayo, wasabi mayo, chipotle mayo, malt vinegar, and maybe a few others. They also have sweet potato fries, and even offer an option to get half normal and half sweet potato. I recommend trying half and half because the portion size is already huge and variety is always nice. As far as burger places go, I feel that buns deserves 5 stars for having such an interesting menu and a high quality veggie burger. Roasted beets and goat cheese are a natural combination, but I never would have thought to try topping a burger with it. I haven't really tried their other menu items, but for vegetarians or veggie lovers, this place is a must-try! read more

Hands down, best burger I've had in Chapel Hill. I love that the burger changes whenever I come there, even if I don't get a specialty burger. However, I do love the specialty burgers, with my two favorites being the brunch burger and the fire-roasted jalapeno burger. The jalapeno burger's spiciness depends on the jalapenos you happen to get, so it's a gamble. Some of my friends have almost died from it, but I've gotten some very mild burgers before. I've literally had everything there, even down to the sides and the different types of patties. On that note, I think it's one of the tastiest vegetarian patties here in Chapel Hill. Some things I recommend: -Small Caesar Salad with Seared Tuna: If you want, make sure you specify that you want it very rare or else the kitchen might take extra precautions for you and make it pink instead. Get the small because they will give you more than enough for the cheaper price. -Fire-Roasted Jalapeno -Brunch Burger: If you like sunny-side up eggs like me, ask for it to be runny, and served with the top bun on the side. George, the owner, will automatically leave the top bun off for you if he's there, but sometimes you have to ask otherwise. -Hot dog: I seriously love this because of the slaw that they make and the caramelized onions. You can ask for fire-roasted jalapenos on top without extra charge, I think. The best thing here is that if you want it, they'll make it. -Lamb burger: if it ever comes back. i think it's off the menu for now. -Chuck Burger on Brioche: I'm not sure what the exact name is, but it was a special for a couple of days and was ground in-house. Therefore, it can be cooked medium rare! It was a blend of several different cuts of meat, chosen by the owner, and served on Brioche buns with Gruyere Cheese. Come in, get your burger completely personalized (I go for double - one turkey, one beef - with cheddar cheese, grilled mushrooms, onions, jalapenos, tomato, lettuce, avocado, and chipotle mayo) and enjoy it in a casual atmosphere. Ok, I don't want to totally skewer this place at the risk of being run off by the Yelp community, and I don't think it deserves to be totally skewered because it has its strong points, but for a burger place I kind of expect a better burger. Let me explain - I have been looking for tasty and delicious, non-hockey puck, fat juicy burgers ever since I moved here. There are laws against cooking burgers the way I like (run the cow past and i'll just take a hunk) but that doesn't mean that a burger has to equal a limp and sorry little charred patty. Pros: Pretty much everything other than the burger itself. Dipping sauces blew my mind, selections to go on your burger are rockin' and they have lots of veg options. Oh, and sweet potato fries. Mmmm, sweet potato fries. Prices are reasonable and they serve booze. Cons: It can get pretty crowded at peak times, they don't deliver for less than 50 bucks, and the patties themselves make me sad. Buns is one of those places where if you want to pig out it's a great place or if you just really need a burger, but honestly it's not that great and I'm going to tell you why. -They cook the burgers all the way through. This results in dry gray patties. They aren't really seared so there is no textural contrast, its basically a beefy disk. -Honestly there are way too many toppings that basically are there to divert your attention from mediocre beef. It's great that they give you options, but none can really enhance a nominal patty. -The bun isn't toasted and is pretty thick. The ratio is way off and it just makes it way too hard to enjoy. Nothing is worse than a cold bun. -The fries are the only thing that are somewhat redeeming, but sometimes they are cold and stiff. -Also, it's pretty expensive for nothing special. I love this place. If you like a good burger that you can dress up any way you want look no further! So many free customizable condiments and toppings (different sauces, onions prepared different ways, several varieties of cheese, different veggies, etc) and some other "gourmet" toppings for a small fee (fancy cheese, fried egg, avocado). I'm of the personal opinion that a burger should be extremely messy so this is perfect for me! I've had all three varieties of burger, veggie, beef, and turkey and liked them all! I usually try and choose my toppings based on the meat however. The beef patties are spiced with black pepper which I enjoy but could turn others off honestly. The veggie patties have little flecks of veggies that you can see and are made in house. The turkey burgers are also very good but honestly a little bit blander. I again though enjoy them all. But my favorite thing about Buns is probably the sweet potato fries! While Buns has regular potato fries it also has sweet potato fries for no additional charge. They're cut and fried in house and are the perfect size to be crispy on the outside and still soft and flavorful on the outside. I literally will get cravings for these fries at times. They also have tons of dipping sauces but I will admit that I'm the faithful type and always get the sweet potato fries with the spicy Dragon sauce which I believe to be a perfect pairing! Also of note is that the staff is very friendly and helpful. It's usually the same people working when I go in there and I always get a smile and a very genuine feeling of politeness from them, even when I'm taking forever to decide what I want on my burger or order twenty toppings. The place is also very clean and welcoming. I've literally sat in the place after eating with a friend for two hours talking with no issue or feeling like I was being rushed along or unwelcome once my ordering was finished. Overall I love Buns and am a faithful regular. As a student at UNC I regret only having ventured into the establishment during my junior year, two whole years wasted! (One thing to say though is that this site says that Buns has delivery service, which I think is stretching the truth as you have to order $50 worth for delivery. Last year, on the first night of a four night stay in Chapel Hill, I asked a friend where I could find fresh, well priced food late in the evening. He recommended Buns. I told him I didn't want to hit a strip club, and he explained that Buns is not a skeezy Hooters clone, so I gave it a try. Seared Tuna burger? Well alright! Now we're talking. Never frozen, quality ingredients, lots of choices, and seared tuna, salmon, and turkey options? Heck yes! Night one was the Seared Tuna burger. Scrumtrulescent - light and flavorful. Lunch the next day was a regular burger (sometimes you just need the red meat goodness). It hit the spot. Dinner the next night was a turkey burger (wonderful!). And night four...back to the Seared Tuna burger. Yup, it was good enough that I would try it every night of my stay. I am usually a little skeptical of veggie burgers, since a lot of times it feels like they just dumped a morning star patty on the grill. Not at Buns! And that is just the "burger" part of the burger - they have a nice list of additional toppings to make your burger just the way you like it. My husband had the brunch burger which was a single beef patty with cheese, bacon, and a fried egg on an english muffin. How did I manage to go out in Chapel Hill for basically two nights a week for nearly two years and never come to this place until now?? This should be one of your go to destinations on Franklin Street for all your drunken night out munchies. Buns is fairly large on the inside with a decent amount of seating space. Burgers range from $5-$8 without fries and drink. They have some pretty dank sweet potato fries here ($3 for reg/$5 for large) though we did a few undercooked fries when we stopped in around 2AM the other night. I recommend you get it with some Dragon Sauce (a sweet mayo sirarcha sauce) - yum! I opted for a premade burger combo - the fire roasted jalapeno burger, which also comes with avocado and bacon. The burger was fantastic, though I think the bun could used a little bit more toasting. My roommate, who's been coming here since his undergrad days has an amazing custom creation of turkey, swiss, chipotle mayo, caramelized onions (& other toppings) that was literally amazing. I know what I'm getting the next time I'm coming here. And oh boy, will there be a next time. read more

So, I've been to the Franklin Street umpteen times and went to Buns for the first time just last week. Go figure. What a fun little joint! First off, the people taking the food orders are hilarious. The woman was singing and calling everyone "honey" and "sugar." Nothing like some good ol' Southern sweetness. I had already eaten lunch at my desk, so my heifer-self ordered a basket of fries and BBQ sauce. I watched in awe as my co-workers ate their burgers in ecstasy. Now, I am not a red meat eater, but those burgers sure smelled delish. They also have chicken sandwiches, which I have every intention of trying next time. My only gripe was the seating; I thought they could have squished a few more tables in the dining room area. And if you do think it's too expensive (I don't know how) you can rationalize it by thinking of it as the price for 2 meals since you probably won't be able to finish the food. Decor: I'm a sucker for their bright colored dining room and plentiful TVs. Food: This is obviously why you came! There's many different options from your meat, to your prep, to your toppings (tons for free!), to your fry sauce. My favorite is the wasabi! Not a bad place to stop in on Franklin st. if you want a tasty burger! The patties and options there are a-plenty, as you have a choice of single, double, veggie, fish, turkey, etc. There are tons of toppings available, and you have a choice of wheat or white buns, or regular or sweet potato fries. We tried out a spread of a couple of things to get a good spread of the menu, and weren't displeased at all - but it was nothing spectacular to go home. The buns were a bit too thick for my tastes, and I ended up ditching it.. and the sweet potato fries actually tasted a bit too burnt or something. You know how I know I have problems? I can't say the name of this restaurant without giggling. Anyway... wow, seriously... OK. We got our order to-go. Despite the 20 minute drive home, the burgers were in great shape. I had a double patty with cheddar, mushrooms, carmelized onions and chipotle mayo. The toppings were a highlight. They were plentiful, flavorful, and seemed fresh. I devoured the whole thing. Don't worry, it was healthy -- I got the wheat bun. The large fry is quite large. We got sweet potato fries which were tasty, but not crisp. I think this is more of a function of them being sweet potatoes and sitting in the styrofoam packaging on the drive home than anything. Also, they were still tasty. We got dragon sauce and honey mustard. The dragon sauce had a sriracha flavor and was a good pairing with the sweetness of the fries. While ordering, the cashier was jocular and upbeat, which made me smile. He was helpful with some suggestions, though I wish they had more posted near the menu. You know, they could pair a few of the toppings and give them clever or descriptive names just to make it easier on you. I like that most of the toppings are no charge. I love Buns, and I eat there a whole lot, but two things bother me slightly. 1. They seem to have a perpetual problem of bringing out plates of food within the same order at different times. Obviously this doesn't affect the overall delicious qualities of their burgers, but it just annoys me when I get my food before/after someone I'm there with. 2. It is a teensy bit pricey. That being said, I suppose you get what you pay for in some ways: they give you an absolute ton of food, and the ingredients are of good quality. However, I just feel that upwards of 10 dollars for a burger and fries that you order at a counter is ever so slightly questionable. Otherwise, it's a great place. I definitely agree with Mari, the Buns' veggie burger was quite yummy. The portion was huge and if it was a frozen patty, it sure didn't taste like it! The large selection of toppings and sauces makes this a fun place to come to and try new things. It's a little more fru-fru than your typical burger joint by offering sauces like wasabi mayo and chipotle mayo, but it's a change for your taste buds. I love sweet potato fries, but I felt like Buns' fell short. They just didn't pack much flavor and were a little limpy. My friend had regular fries that I thought were a lot better, better flavor and better crispiness. I was also a little bit surprised by how sweet the carmelized onions were so just keep that in mind when making your burger. I think that's clear, but I should probably point that out anyways :) To this point, I hadn't really found a straight-up burger joint in Chapel Hill (and no, The Golden Arches do not count). I came by here with some of my fellow grad-students, and found the setup to be conducive to ordering relatively quickly. The entire menu is on the wall, and easily readable. You can get single, double, or triple stack burger, with a variety of toppings and sauces, with some stuff (fried egg, extra cheese, bacon) for a dollar more. They have the value deal for $2.99 extra with a decent amount of fries (regular or sweet potato!!!) and soda (together, the entire meal ends up being somewhere between $8-10, based on what you order). The food is quite good. The burgers are beefy goodness, the choice of toppings is incredibly good, and the fries (both french and sweet potato) are delectable. The burgers are big too. The double is a big size, and I (and the others who got doubles) couldn't finish, instead going into food coma mode :) Coupled with outstanding service (they call everyone "Sweetie", and are very good about table clearing :) ) and I have to give Buns a 5-star rating. I really enjoyed Buns. I took my parents and grandfather there for a quick cheap meal. I appreciate their mission to "use the freshest, least processed ingredients" - fresh is always better than processed any day! The service was great - they not only bring your food out to you, they also clear your table for you, which, by all appearances, looks like you're supposed to do yourself. I ordered a turkey burger with onions and sauteed mushrooms, which was fantastic. The burger really tasted fresh (not like it had been frozen for months awaiting it's turn on the grill)! I would suggest, though, that you share an order of fries...none of us could finish our fries after the huge burger. The only thing non-positive (negative is such a bad word, don't you think?) Pre-veggie pledge, a couple of weeks ago, I had lunch at Buns as it was recommended by one of my dining companions who spent his college days at UNC...poor kid. Anyhoo, we decided to opt for a quick burger for lunch. Buns has LOTS of options for burgers and some other sandwich options. You can basically pick your meat, toppings, condiments, and bun by "creating your own burger". Note, if you opt for fries with your order, there are a crap-ton of them so you should perhaps share with someone or you will become pretty glutinous or waste a lot of fries. It is a sort of a self-serve place, you order, and they do bring it to you but you fetch your own refills and other things you may need. They don't come back to check on you. The prices were ok. Burger was pretty tasty. Can't complain, overall, was an ok fast food sort of option for a quick lunch. read more

I don't know why, but I've tried this place so many times to figure out why it's so popular and why so many people purport to love this place but it just has never really done it for me. The fries I got were so incredibly burnt and dry I just couldn't stomach them. No amount of sauce and salt could rescue those things. Went there for the first time yesterday. I had a single patty with swiss cheese, mushrooms, caramelized onions and mayo. There are tons of free toppings that you can add to your burgers. The buns are made fresh in the store as well as the hand-cut french fries and sweet potato fries. I picked the sweet potato fries. They also offer a variety of dipping sauces for the fries. The burger was wonderful fresh with a nice sweetness added by the caramelized onions. I was stuffed after eating my burger and there was no way I could eat all the fries. Buns is my favorite burger place on campus! The sauces are SO GOOD! My favorite is chipotle mayo - I can go through about 3 containers of sauce whenever I eat there. The burgers are massive and very filling. I ate here a lot before being vegetarian, and I was so delighted when I found out their menu contains a veggie burger which is absolutely delicious! It has lots of veggies including alfalfa sprouts, which may sound a little odd but they're pretty good. I gave this place four stars because their burgers (well, not the veggie ones) tend to be oily, which I don't like that much. The service here is always great and the servers are really nice! My family and I stopped for lunch on 12/29. We are from NY ,my wife and I have three boys and they enjoy their burgers and fries. The burgers and fries did not disappoint. Fresh made to order,singles, doubles. Outstanding. We ate around 330 and we were still full at 830 that night. It isn't often my boys say they are still full with no need for dinner but BUNS did the trick. The place Has a simple set up. Order at the counter get your number and have a seat. Ordered a single on white, with cheddar, bacon, lettuce, tomato, raw onion, ketchup, mustard, mayo. Also got French fries and a chocolate shake. It was my first time here, so I wanted to experience their standard burger. - burger was cooked on a flat-top rather than flame broiled - burger was wrapped in foil even though I was eating in-house which made the burger poach/steam itself - burger was completely overcooked, dry, and pretty flavorless - bun was shitty quality and tasteless (which I found to be most ironic considering it's THE NAME OF THE RESTAURANT) - fries were fresh cut, but only single cooked instead of double-cooked, so they were limp and soggy, not firm and crispy - shake was good Overall, boooooo! I don't give out 5-star reviews for anything without good cause, but Buns deserves it. Everything we ate was fresh and delicious, and the staff were super nice. Our party of three (including one 5-year old) were greeted immediately upon entering, and the lady at the counter was really helpful, even offering to cut the kid's burger in half. I had a double-stack burger with some spicy flavors (chipoltle sauce, jalapeno peppers, pepper jack,) and my wife had a veggie burger which she claims is the best she's ever had. Since our initial visit, we've been back four more times even though it's a 45 minute drive. It's that good. Sweet potato fries with curry mustard sauce. Seriously, get this. read more
