Great spot for a quick and filling meal. We tried the new sauced tenders as well as the hibachi trio fries. Everything was delicious! I've been before and tried their loaded fries and Mambo Wings. I first heard about Mr. Fries Man from Tik Tok and while driving from Greensboro, NC to Norfolk, VA a lightbulb went off in my head to make a quick detour in Durham to try this place out. I was with 3 other friends and after telling them to pull up the tik tok I saw they had no problems with stopping there for lunch. Be aware that there are no tables and chairs at this location there's only an order window and a waiting area to wait for your food after you order. After looking at the menu my friends and I decided that it would be the most economically sound to order their "Signature Fry Box", which comes with 4 different types of loaded fries; BBQ Bacon Ranch Chicken, Buffalo Chicken, Lemon Garlic Shrimp, and Honey Garlic Shrimp and Steak. Girl, my friends and I took some napkins and 4 forks outside, sat that box down, and tore that box up! While I enjoyed each flavor, I preferred the chicken to the seafood/steak and the BBQ Bacon Chicken Ranch was my personal favorite. Keep in mind that these fries are a lot portion wise so make sure you're hungry before ordering them. Came here for a late night snack and starting off there was only one guy working and doing everything so after placing our order we waited almost 40 minutes for our food and we only ordered two fry things. Once we got our food, it looked nothing like the picture, the chicken was not fully covered in the sauce, it was burnt and the chicken tasted as if it was sitting in the freezer with freezer burn for a while. All the "customer favorite" options had meat, but there were some options from "build your own" fries where you could include Beyond Meat as the protein. I confess I was intrigued about the crab options but just decided to go with junior grilled chicken since I was nervous, and added ranch dressing. The base price was good -- $4.15 for junior or $5.22 for regular. But the price goes up a good amount when you do choose a protein. For instance, grilled/ fried chicken was $10.26 for junior or $13.25 for regular. Beyond Meat was $16.15 for junior or $19.14 for regular. Oof! Or for crab and shrimp... $24.89/ $27.88. Even cheddar cheese raised the price by almost $2 further. Some of the mix options they list on the site are a slightly better deal, but only very slightly. Very curiously, they don't have standard poutine. That seemed an obvious thing to add to the menu, but no cheese curds or gravy on the menu even for build-your-own. (Unless the cryptically named "Hello" or "Smack" sauce is actually gravy-- though they are described as "sweet & tangy", so I assume not.) I will say that the junior size was a good amount of food for one person, even a pretty big eater. I assume the regular is probably enough to share. The quality-- it was good. I liked it. The grilled chicken was yummy-- had good seasoning on it, so wasn't plain/ boring at all. My wife got the fried chicken topping, and she enjoyed it-- it had a thin but tasty batter. The fries were fine-- middle-of-the-pack restaurant fries. The mix was tasty-- I enjoyed it. Personally, I would have loved a "side" option... I love fries, but a meal of just "fries" is pretty hefty on the stomach. Overall, I came away positive but not overwhelmed. I felt like the value for my grilled chicken + fries meal was decent, especially for near-downtown and given recent inflation. BBC The location is really nice, and near other restaurants that seemed fairly populated on a Tuesday night. I must say, I was really impressed by the number of menu options. John, one of the chefs, explained the whole menu to us. It was about 2 paragraphs worth of explaining lol, but basically you can mix any protein with any sauce or seasoning, and everything has cheese! John was also kind enough to give my brother a student discount. It got really quiet in the restaurant as everyone started eating - that's how you know it was good! So about the fries - the freshness made the world of difference! I had the Lemon Garlic Shrimp, which is actually their happy hour special, but I upgraded it to regular size. My brother had the Honey Garlic Steak and Shrimp, and ate it all before I could take a picture! He's a pretty picky eater, so I know he enjoyed it when his container was completely empty! I gotta say, I've been looking forward to trying this place since it opened and after all the wait my experience with Mr. Fries was very mediocre at best. The website says online orders take between 10-15 minutes and we ordered saturday night around 7PM and the food was ready for pickup five minutes later. Given the horrendous parking situation at Mr. Fries you'll spend longer waiting for a spot to park. Parking is drive up for takeout only and there's no close street parking. So plan ahead when it comes to parking to pick up your order. The pick up experience is seamless though. Your order is kept in a warming cubby that unlocks with your order code so you don't need to interact with anyone. A bonus for those socially awkward folks. I ordered the honey garlic steak and shrimp. I'll say the portions are insanely big, but not worth the price of $20. The sauce was excellent. I really can't stress that they have the sauces nailed down. The quality of the steak and shrimp though was lacking. The steak dried out and well done, the shrimp tasted salty and not very good. You'll have leftovers with these portions but fries never heat up well. My wife got bacon and chicken fries. The cheese was barely melted and the chicken was fried out and the bacon was kind of pathetic. She was not thrilled at all with hers. Overall I feel like Mr. Fries is a good example of too much of a good thing in an overpriced package. Who doesn't love loaded fries? It's a great premise that's execution isn't really worth the price. $40s+ for two orders of loaded fries that were not very good. It's just something I can't justify beyond the initial experience.
