Pleasantly surprised with a big outdoor patio and very friendly staff. We had beers and lunch; the food was nothing to write home about, but no complaints either. More that it was a very welcoming spot to sit and spend some of a beautiful day. Go for: lunch/late lunch/drinks Try: chips & guacamole.... but remember they are actually chips and basically a salsa with chunks of avocado in it. Met up close to 6 pm with a group of friends. The decor is very nice & hosts friendly. Each one of us ordered a different item. Out of 7, only three felt what they ordered was to their liking. Our server was nice enough, but never returned to ask any of us if everything was okay. We tried flagging her down even for water or drinks and weren't able to without intervention. Im a vegetarian & ordered the ( I may not have the exact name) cheesy curried fries. The plate came mounded with mushy, sauced fries with a hot cheesy topping. To me it looked horrible, but it's what I ordered and trying something new. The salt content alone stopped me from trying more than a fork full. It appeared the same went for 2 others in our dining group.... Anyway, I couldn't eat what I ordered. It wasn't the first time this has happened when I've gone out & probably won't be the last. Clearing our dishes we practically had to do ourselves - again because we couldn't get the attention of our server. Paying our bills was another looooong wait. My wife and I went last night. It's your typical American (Irish) pub. They have Switchback on tap which is fantastic, as well as Smithwicks ... So good show there! We got spinach and artichoke dip and Irish spring rolls (which were phenomenal) as an appetizer. Bangers and Mash were disappointing, more like well done hot dogs and bland mash potatoes w/ little gravy. Also their "traditional" Shepard's Pie is made with ground beef, which is pretty far from traditional. All in all, it's okay. I'd go back for beer and the spring rolls. On a side note .... Mediocre experience. Why haven't you put the dinner and drink menu on your website yet? Waited several years for this place to open, and I can't say that I'm going to rush back. Guys -- use your beautiful patio! A Friday night in the summer is the perfect excuse -- why wasn't it open? Overall, the staff were busting their asses, but service from the kitchen was dreadfully slow. Speaking of the kitchen, the Tavern Nachos were a great appetizer choice, but I could have done without the gristly corned beef sandwich and watery coleslaw. Burgers seemed okay, you won't go hungry, but don't expect to take home any leftovers either. By 9pm on Friday, the place was emptying out, which was fine because the volume of noise bouncing off the bare walls and ceilings when it was busy made it hard to converse with those next to you. My take: Come here for a beer or two before going elsewhere for the evening. read more

Very disappointed. With so few options in downtown Reading, I had been mildly excited for Bunratty's to open...ignoring the fact that it took years to do so. We went on the Friday opening night, and it felt clear they were still rushed and not ready. The decor was bland...from limp lighting to the plain painted drywall liquor shelf behind the bar, it felt a bit like someone's finished basement (and less like a cozy pub). They were fairly busy, which was a good sign. We were seated promptly at a high-top right by a sunny window...which was also good. Our server (and another server in training) came over and took some drink orders for us...weirdly, the beer menu was on a little photocopied sheet of paper, with some beers specific and others just a brand name. After a long wait (maybe 15 minutes), one of two beers came back...they were out of my beer, so I ordered another, and some just-arrived friends orders drinks as well. Twenty minutes then pass...and a few more drinks arrive, but they are also out of my newly-ordered beer...so I order again. Another 15-minutes pass and I receive the beer I ordered previously (which I thought they had been out of). Beer was kind of warm, kind of flat. Then our server disappeared. Never saw her again. After finishing our (singular) drinks after over an hour, we had to flag down the server-in-training for our check...which was given to us very unceremoniously (no "would you like another drink" or "is everything ok" - just a hurried drop-on-the-table-and-turn-away-quickly). So we paid and left, hungry (and went to Grumpy's Ale House down the street...which we then found out was shutting down the next morning. Two stars only because it was opening night, but after years of delayed opening, it still felt really rushed and not-yet-ready-to-be-open. Pretty disappointing. read more

I was perusing Irish restaurants on Yelp to pick one out to go to for Irish Breakfast on St Pat's weekend. To be truly honest, I picked Bunratty Tavern because of the reviews. It's true that some of them are not above par, but taking the time to read why they issued one or two stars, along w/ reading the owner's responses, gave me the thought that I'd like to give it a shot without assuming the worst. We'd been here before for drinks and an appetizer at the bar and enjoyed ourselves, so we already knew the place was charming. We recently moved out of the "City" and having several "authentic" Irish Pubs as our usual hangouts, we were glad to find a place that was at least as welcoming and comfortable as those we were already used to. Our Sunday breakfast experience was just as exceptional. We were here with our kids and they both loved their meals, one being the nutella and banana french toast...nomtastic! Our oldest is a vegetarian and she not only found plenty of options, she actually had trouble deciding what to choose and went for an omelette with potatoes...which were outstanding. My husband got the Irish Breakfast with all the fixin's and I heard no complaints from his side of the table, my favorite on his plate was the bangers. I ordered the corned beef and hash with eggs over easy. The hash was perfect, not too salty which is a frequent issue I come across. I devoured the first egg, with the yolk just as runny as it should be. But when I started on the second egg, I discovered it was only cooked on the outside and sealed the very much uncooked egg inside, so not just the yolk was runny, but so was the egg itself. And the fact that it was sitting on top of the rest of the hash, I found myself disappointed that I couldn't bring myself to eat the rest of the meal. I flagged the waitress down and explained the dilemma. At this point, the rest of the table was either done or almost done with their food, but I was still hungry. I asked the waitress to bring me some of those outstanding potatoes and delicious bangers instead of another full hash and eggs meal, to which she was happy to accommodate. While I waited, the owner (Jim, I think) came over to apologize. I am a former career waitress, so the undercooked egg, while it wasn't acceptable/edible, was just a mistake that I had not held against the cook or the restaurant. But Jim was very considerate to the situation and acknowledged the fact that they will make sure they pay more attention to prevent it from happening again. My potatoes and bangers came out shortly thereafter and they were both just as amazing as the food I had stolen off of my family's plates; and of course, more food than I needed at that point, so I was happy to share. They took the hash and eggs off the bill and the owner checked in once again to make sure the rest of my food came out right. We chatted for a few minutes about the decor and atmosphere and felt truly welcomed into his establishment and can't wait to head there again. Next time, we hope to catch some live music. read more

I was somewhat underwhelmed (possibly had very high expectations because Reading desperately needs a great bar and was excited to see the new spot) I had the specialty nachos and they were extremely spicy and we hadn't been warned that they were not like traditional nachos. The steak tips were good. Beer selection was not what I look for at a local bar - need more micro brew / craft beer. I mean, it wasn't *awful* but it could have been SO much better. The atmosphere sucks. Too much empty space around the restaurant and there was this seriously weird smell in the back. The bar is alright but there are only two TVs, one of each in the corners, so if you're in the middle of the bar, you're screwed. There were a few other TVs around the rest of the restaurant but none were turned on. Definitely NOT a good place to watch a game. Bare walls with hardly any personality. NOT a good place to bring a date either. The staff was alright. Our Irish bartender was a peach and the other one was your typical chatty, forgetful bartender. Another bartender was making drinks for the servers, so there were three all together, plus a manager who was kind of just walking around aimlessly behind the bar. We sat with two empty drinks in front of us for a pretty long time until someone finally came over to us to see if we wanted a refill, but by that time we had the credit card in front of us, ready to pay the bill and leave. The food. It wasn't good. My husband had the lobster roll special and he said it was good, but it was a ridiculously small portion. He finished it in about 3 bites and was picking at my meal after. I had the Shepard's pie, thinking it would be hard to screw it up at an Irish restaurant. It wasn't bad, but I've had better at pretty much any other Irish restaurant I've ever been to. I make a better one in my tiny kitchen at home. It was soupy, way too much meat gravy, with barely any vegetables. Presentation was atrocious. Think ground beef and gravy with a thin layer of stale mashed potatoes on top, all sloppily put together by someone who has never cooked in a kitchen before (picture attached). Solid chance I won't return anytime soon. Like I said, it wasn't bad, but there are so many other better places to have dinner at. PS -- I agree with another poster that the dress code is very strange. I found this place on my way back from getting a haircut and in my opinion it is a great addition to the neighborhood. It is the typical irish bar with an assortment of irish whiskey and beer like Guinness and magners cider. I would not say I am an expert in authentic irish bars, but this place is more authentic than a lot of other places in the area. Hugh O'Neils in Malden has a dance floor in back and I have never heard of authentic irish bar having a dance floor. Bunratty Tavern does not have a dance floor and uses its space effectively to service its customers. There is Grumpy Doyle's down the street, but it is only irish in name. Like I said, this place is a welcome addition to the area. Every good irish bar should have a shepherd's pie on the menu. And Bunratty Tavern serves a good shepherd's pie. It is very flavorful and it goes great with magner's cider on ice. This place has only been open for two weeks so I do not see how anyone can really give it a bad review at this point. I think some of the bad reviews are from the competition and I can't wait to see how long it takes for the competition to close up shop. Look at this way people, if a place has only been open two weeks and it already has over 20 reviews, whether good or bad, you know it is becoming a popular place. I anticipate with more reviews, this place will rise its rating to above 3 stars. You should go to this bar for the bar service most of all. There is very polite and attentive bartenders here and they blow the competition away. This bar definitely seems like a great place to go for Saint Patrick's Day. Great spot, good sandwiches, family friendly, love Irish music at 5 pm on a Saturday which was not too loud. You could here the music but it did not dominate the pub. I did not care for the gin and grapefruit martini but server brought me a new drink. They have daily specials and prices that are reasonable. The grill chicken sandwich was tasty and worth ordering again. Would I go out of my way to come back, "yes". This is relaxing local spot and sure place to go to have a quick bite and a beer. Love it here. Great atmosphere, good food, and great prices. Just what I was hoping for. This is my third time here and the first with one of my kids. I appreciate that I can bring her here early and there are a lot of other parents with kids here. But, I also really appreciate that it is adults only later. It is nice to go out on a date and not be surrounded by children for a bit. Only two wishes so far: 1) more vegetarian options. Having spent time in Ireland, we were excited to get a gift card from our friends to this pub. The first thing we noticed was that it was very loud, but it was a Saturday eve after all. The beer menu had some of our faves on draft--good IPAs and Guinness. The good menu looked authentic and the prices are reasonable. The steak tips were sweet and cooked as ordered; we enjoyed the fries over the mashed. The background Irish music and decor made for a nice experience. Had a surprise birthday party here about a month ago. Everything was amazing! Seriously could not have asked for anything more. They had plenty of reserved space for what ended up being over 50 people. The service was great and the atmosphere is relaxed and open. There was even a live band since it was Friday night. It was very affordable to have a party here! We had an open bar and buffet which probably cost at least 50% less of what other places had quoted us without alcohol. Everyone raved about the food and Eilish was super helpful and accommodating, making the whole process very smooth and easy. Would do it over again at Bunratty's in a heartbeat. Last year we took a trip to Ireland and had a dish called Boxty. When we came back to Boston we asked and researched almost every Irish pub in the area no luck. When we came to Bunratty we not only had exceptional service from the waitress but when we inquired about boxty (where to find, how to make). The owner literally went out her way to make it for us and gave us instructions. Wow! I have never had service like this in my 10 years of living in MA. Definitely recommend. We like this place. It give you the feel of some of the great Irish Pubs in Boston/Cambridge/Somerville, but right in Reading. We've gone for both dinner and drinks, and for breakfast. At night, the place is alive with a funloving crowd, live Irish music, a projection screen showing whatever game is playing, and an overall great atmosphere. They pour a great Guinness and the food is great, for your standard Irish fare. Breakfast was also a pleasurable experience. The food tasted great (I recommend the Eggs Benedict over their homemade corned beef hash). They have an omelette station as well. The wait was super long, and it was admittedly frustrating (our server didn't acknowledge it once while we waited nearly 30 minutes for the food). However, once the food was served, the manager walked over and offered his apologies for the wait. He told us that they got unexpectedly slammed for business, and the wait was atypical. We appreciated that (it's that type of customer service that so many places lack). We'll certainly be back soon. read more
