After reading some of the comments regarding Bump's customer service during this COVID era, I felt the need to express how Bump has added to my emotional distress during this time. For example, Ryan (the more athletic looking one, sorry Trevor) made a mistake on my order this morning and in the mixup I got an extra coffee. How am I supposed to make this up to them? How will I sleep tonight? Will my lack of sleep be from the added caffeine or from accepting an undeserved second coffee? I don't know. Stressful. Another example of added distress is from last month when Trevor (the one that smiles sometimes, sorry Ryan) asked me if I wanted a cup of "hot water" when I first arrived around 7 AM. What public-facing employee doesn't know that sarcasm isn't supported before 8 AM, especially at a coffee shop when Trevor knew I hadn't had coffee yet (let alone during a pandemic). So why do I keep coming back, you might ask. Well, I'm not a scientist, but I am good with numbers. If Bump's employees come into contact with hundreds (thousands?) of customers each week, and I've gone to Bump dozens of times during this global pandemic, how have none of us gotten infected? Perhaps you're putting the pieces of the puzzle together, and yes I'm suggesting Bump Coffee is the cure to COVID-19. (But for real, the coffee is the best in SD County and fully worth the $4 price tag. Do yourself a favor and pick up a cup.) read more

Coffee is not bad but not great. No visible menu, which I guess is an attempt to be cool, but when I got to the counter I felt like an idiot for not know what to order. Staff guy didn't make me feel any better. Just kinda gave attitude. My advice. Make people feel more welcome. I could go to a dozen other shop for mediocre coffee and be treated better. Coffee was good. My husband liked the empanadas. I probably won't go back until COVID is contained though because I just wasn't comfortable with their social distancing and mask practices. The barista wasn't wearing a mask and wasn't 6 feet away from customers at times, including myself. I had to back away from her to create distance. Other people working often took their masks off while standing close to other workers. Customers were eating right outside the doors so they didn't have masks on, obviously, but it was impossible to be 6 feet away from them while entering the establishment to order food. Customers also were walking around inside without masks, trying to grab napkins and talking to people in close range and coming within a foot of my husband who has a compromised immune system. They were out of the empanada I wanted so I went to VGs next door and VGs' establishment was doing everything correctly even though they are also in a small space- wearing masks, distancing, etc. For me, being comfortable and feeling safe when I grab food is important right now, esp because my husband is at risk, so I'll have to put another visit on pause. read more

We stumbled across Bump Coffee at the La Jolla Open Aire Market last Sunday. They're tucked away in the back by the 'food court' with all the tables & benches. I had seen this coffee stand during our two passes of all the aisles of the market. I was kicking myself for not ordering the coffee from THIS stand as 1) it was slow brewed RIGHT IN FRONT of you and 2) it was cheaper. Friend decided to buy two coffees here for us to try out (he cares about my food blog huh). I was hesitant as I just had an iced nitrogen coffee from a different just an hour before. Each hot cup of coffee is made to order and you can see them grinding fresh coffee beans for each hot coffee order. Hot water is then poured over the coffee and you wait for it to seep. After the coffee drips into the paper cup, the gentleman then pours the hot coffee into another cup to cool it down (I think). Their coffee is lightly sweetened with raw brown sugar (can be omitted or you can also ask for more) as well as heavy cream. Friend said this was probably one of the best coffees he's ever had. I decided to try their Iced Mojito Coffee. Yeah. MOJITO. And no, there was no booze in it. I wish I could remember this guy's name. It was either Ryan or Trevor. Both guys were incredibly fun and helpful. There's a fresh mint bush/plant that they hand pick the mint for each mojito coffee drink. They even muddle the leaves to maximize the mint intensity for this coffee! Their iced coffee is already made and refrigerated. I was a bit weary of this as the last iced coffee, just an hour ago, wasn't as great as I had hoped for (just my personal taste though). They also use organic heavy cream and raw cane sugar for this drink. I declined the cane sugar. I'd curse right now but it was a Sunday. This iced coffee SHOULD have been the coffee that I had first (& only) that day. The coffee tasted smooth with absolutely no acidity. You could 100% taste the muddled green mint in this drink. It was such a refreshing drink that I totally didn't need at that point (I started getting the caffeine shakes at church). My friend felt bad because he didn't realize how potent the previous nitrogen coffee was for me. This coffee vendor is absolutely worth a visit to the La Jolla Open Aire Market to try out. Trevor I haven't even visited Bump coffee but your sarcastic and defensive responses to recurring customer complaints on this thread have confirmed their very points about 1) not being considered 2) unfriendliness of owner and staff 3) rude responses and behavior. In the case of customer complaints, you would be more successful in validating how they Felt after leaving your establishment and asking them questions on how you might improve their experience. Invalidating someone and blaming them on top of it is not going to make your business more successful. read more

Bump coffee seems to have the same concept as Philz where all the offerings are pour over coffees. Bump coffee could be a nice option if you do not like the coffee served at the popular donut place next door. They are lucky to be located across the street from the beach and must get a lot of customers from both the beach and donuts. The selection and space is smaller which I did not mind. I like supporting the "underdogs". But the quality of the pour overs are not flavorful at all. They do have some savory and sweet pastries, but nothing gluten free. The baristas are moderately friendly. They are nice, but the coffee nor their personalities really convince me to return to this cafe. read more

I'm quite the coffee snob.. so coming from me, this is a bold statement; this is hands down the best coffee in San Diego. It's creamy, it's sweet, it's flavorful.. and that's straight up without milk or sugar. It hints with caramel and toffee.. and a slight kick of vanilla. Their house made nut milks (cashew in particular) really round out the cup perfectly.. and now I won't drink coffee from anywhere else. Don't expect lattes.. just simple cups of joe and cold brew.. with some teas on the side. Here's the bonus: coffee is inexpensive and fairly priced! ($3.00 for a pour over!). This place is like Philz Coffee, but worse. When the coffee shop only has a few methods of brewing, you should expect a high quality execution, but Bump Coffee failed to deliver. The pour over, when I had it, was done too quickly and too hot, so the beans got burnt and there wasn't enough time given to let the beans bloom before adding more water. The cup was extremely diluted, the taste was below average. It wasn't even busy when I got my cup. Maybe I just had a terrible cup made by whoever made it. But it definitely left a bad impression if this is all you do, it should be consistent regardless. Such a shame. read more

No vegan options to be found. I consider myself flexible, but my first order of a "veggie" empanada turned out to be bacon and egg. After that unpleasant surprise, I returned to ask for what I ordered. They apologized saying they all look the same (sure, I get it). But their actual veggie empanada was 99% egg with only a trace of something that may have once been a vegetable. Staying in Cardiff this week. Our buddy sent us here a few days ago. We tried the pour over, which was / is excellent, and I made a mental note about the empanadas. Walked back over there today to try some. On my stroll, right as I was about to turn the corner to Bump, this gal / jogger comes flying past me. She's going so fast, I'm thinking, "man, she must be in the olympics." I round the corner and look to see how much ground she covered in the 15 seconds that she was out of my sight - and she's just completely out of view. TFW you witness world-class talent. I've seen Messi a couple times, and it's like being in an ancient cathedral, awe inspiring. After rounding the corner, it's like another 15 steps to tuck into the strip center where Bump hides itself. I cover each step in the glow I've just witnessed, until... So here's the thing. Coffee is fine...I want to like it. I'm a local and I've been a few times....but attitude....no. I don't get it. You're not that cool guys. (Take a look at all the less than 5 star reviews, the owner responds and is a condescending jerk, so unacceptable, he's private messaged me being RUDE) I know that you think you are with your super trendy mustache, but drop the attitude. I won't be coming back. I can give business to 20 other good places between here and leucadia. Be happy, smile when I walk up to throw $4 at you for a cup of okish coffee. Calm down and be respectful. issues are the owner. Not cool and word spreads when you're local and in a tight knit community. After my initial post which had 3 stars the owner responded very poorly privately about me and my one sentence exchange with my 8 year old son. I got 5 kids I got out of bed to come to his business.
