Looking for a range late last year I hesitated after seeing a few reviews complaining about the staff being surly, but I signed up anyway and am glad I did. I don't know what "Bullet Trap" those other reviewers have been going to, but every single time I've been there in the past 6-8 months they've always been VERY friendly and helpful. Part of me hates to throw shade on other reviewers since I wasn't there with them, but after my consistently positive experiences I have to wonder if maybe the real problem wasn't the staff but the customer. Granted, the facility itself isn't the Ritz-Carlton, but if you're looking for a place where they'll serve you hors d'oeuvres between reloads there are a couple of other options available -- and they're priced accordingly. If, on the other hand, you're like me and need something affordable and can live without the white glove treatment you should at least pay Bullet Trap a visit and decide for yourself. read more

It's crazy being 25 and having a self revelation all of a sudden that I need to be Billy Bad Ass about my safety. 5 years ago I was soooooooo against guns and having them in the house. Now, I'm all like I wish a mutha would pop off......son. No, in all seriousness, I'm still a punk, but my safety comes first, and here I get to chose over 150 guns to test out at my leisure. It's a little expensive, but Jerome there is very knowledgeable about guns and rightfully so. He makes me very at ease about have a .38 in my hand. The staff is nice, some are a little rough around the edges, but I assume you kind of have to be when you sell guns, so I won't hold that against them. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE AND ATTITUDE(S)!!! I've been going to this range ONLY because it's convenient and I've tolerated this for too long. For twelve years and a member, customer service has always been severely poor on ALL levels. Since day one, as soon as I walk into the store front, the greeting is DRY, "if I even receive a greeting at all" and I've conclude they really don't want my business. The negative energy is always THICK even now more than EVER like an all time high!!! I can obviously tell I'm really not WELCOMED and they only HAVE to deal with me so I can eventually leave. Whom ever salesperson(s) at any given time, is behind the back rifle counter, never ASK to assist me while I'm standing there, obviously NEEDING ASSISTANCE and ready to spend money. Thinking back, I bought a 1911 a few years ago and they shipped the wrong pistol. I patiently & graciously accepted an alternative, but remember they had a poor nonchalant attitude back then. So now I ask myself and of course share with my friends and colleagues.....WHY GO BACK OR AT ALL??? Narratively, everything about the facility needs a major overhaul upgrade/remodel and it's likely the employees may be a reflection of ownership. Two years in a row I was turned away from Frisco Gun Club due to the high demands of the gun range during the Black Friday weekend. So Roger M and I decided to hit up Bullet Trap as they are owned by the same company as Frisco Gun Club. The gun range had no wait which was awesome. We arrived in the late afternoon and got lane #1. It kinda reminds me of my hometown gun range. Totally no frills, cheap targets (must buy theirs), and very dated target hangers. I have heard that they do not allow tourists or people without US Citizenship in this range. That's their right to refuse the business if they are inclined. Not sure how much of their business is lost as a result of this but we're both citizens. I read the rules and one that stuck out was no metal cased bullets. Apparently they make a ton of money off the spent brass so they don't want you polluting their ammo recycling efforts. Another reason is safety as the spent casings tend to bounce further back and have the ability to start a fire. The staff here were friendly. I mentioned I was from California and we talked about the bogus gun and ammo restrictions that were recently passed. I buy my ammo from Cabelas because they have no restrictions but they gave me a few more online retailers that are CA friendly/compliant. read more

After years of hemming and hawing, I decided this would be the year to start carrying a gun. Unfortunately for me, this would also be the year that every gun-toting Texan started stockpiling ammunition just in case the Democrats finally managed to outlaw guns. Enter the Bullet Trap. They consistently had .380 ammo when everyone else was sold out, even if it wasn't my preferred brand, and the pricing had my regular range beat. I rarely got the stink-eye for being a girl, even if the guys behind the counter weren't always warm and fuzzy to me. Eh, I guess I'd rather they know what the hell they're talking about than make new BFFs and these guys usually know their stuff. I've never used the range, nor have I priced their guns, so I don't have any input for those aspects. But if you're looking for ammo and have exhausted your other usual sources, Bullet Trap will probably have you covered. read more

I went to the Bullet Trap to acquire a new Model 1911. They, as many others, had none in stock. The counter man told me to go online to see if any other dealers might have the pistol; that the FFL transfer would be easily handled by BT. I asked if I could order one; he said that getting one on line would be easy. That BT might miss a pistol sale, they would keep a customer happy. I followed his advice. It was easy to do. They have a happy customer. The folks at BT have always been polite and courteous. Many in my family have learned to shoot with their instructors. Same with CCL training. A nice place, good people, good customers. read more

I've been here a few times. Not a member but never had any problem getting a lane. Once I came on a Sunday morning about an hour after opening and I had to wait about 30 minutes but that's not a big deal. I just used that time to browse. Basic gun range. No frills. Some of the reviews call the staff rude, but I've never had any issue at all. I came on a Friday night a couple of weeks ago and it was not crowded. I talked with the staff to get some pointers on my aim and they were very friendly and helpful. I can't remember the guy's name but he had a red beard. Anyway, he offered advice on how to improve my pull to the left and then we chatted a little about different handguns for carry. Their store has a really nice selection of new, used, and consignment guns of all kinds. The prices seem fair. For non-members, it was about $20 for the lane and a couple of paper targets. I brought my own ammo. You have to buy theirs if you use one of their rental guns. That's fair. The few times I've been here it has been a very positive experience. This review is for the gun range only. Just like others have stated it is very hot and swampy light conditions on the Range Lanes. After 10 minutes I was completely drenched in sweat and my eye protection kept fogging up and there were no defined markers on the ground or walls to know what distance you're shooting at. I didn't wind up staying as long as I wanted to and I brought half of my ammo home with me because I just could not bear the heat anymore. I will stick to the Gun Zone in Mesquite where they building is new and has air conditioning I would not recommend this gun range to anyone. read more

I love this range. Staff are above and beyond in not only knowledge but also courteous service. Seriously, their knowledge pool is beyond ANYTHING I've ever encountered in the civilian world. Bonus, the staff are not arrogant jack asses which is remarkably rare in the gun club scene. They have demonstrated nothing but professionalism and pride in making sure that EVERY customer receives the best service possible, that the customer is given EVERY answer to EVERY question in a way they can understand it. They don't "gunsplain" and they put "fit" above making the sale. Their consignment policy is excellent and as such they have an EXTRAORDINARY stock of otherwise difficult to find weapons and great prices. They have a HUGE array of rentals, pistol, rifle, and automatic, and staff that make sure you know how to operate them prior to use. The ranges are a little dated and could use an upgrade and TLC but are extremely functional. The AC being down is also an issue that limits comfortable shooting. Despite that critique they are the best in town for the price and the staff are EXTRAORDINARILY willing to assist on range with shooting tips and troubleshooting. The range fees are cheap, the target prices are cheap, rental prices are cheap, and membership packages are out of this world, especially for military, vets, LEOs. My only complaint is the ammo prices. This is my home... damn glad too. read more

This place is your basic gun range, nothing special. They have a few pistol range and 2- 25 yard rifle ranges. The perks about this place is that they allow steel casings on their rifle ranges where most places won't allow it. The one thing that stood out was the staff, they are cool and helpful people. I had a round jammed halfway down my barrel from using cheap ammo and he helped me get it out. So I appreciate that. They also have a good selection of guns used and new and very reasonable priced. read more

I used to have a membership at another DFW gun range, and I enjoyed it there. However, Bullet Trap is closer to where I live and right around the corner from my work so I decided to try it out. After my first visit I decided to go one more time before I got a membership, I wanted to make sure that the great service I got was not a one-time thing. The second tie there were other employees there, but the service was still great. I got my membership, they are quite reasonable compared with other ranges in the area, with great rates for vets and LEO. I have never received bad service at Bullet Trap. A few months ago we even did a little family & friends outing, we rented one gun and used my gun, with the membership discount the whole thing came to something like $80 for five of us, including gun rental and ammo for the rental. As others already mentioned, they do not allow steel casings, and they have also mentioned that they require you to be a citizen (I believe they may accept green card holders, though). The range is no-frills, it's a place to put holes through paper targets. The air conditioning is either too small or not working well, so it can get hot in the lanes. It can get hot in Iraq and Afghanistan too, just suck it up. :-) I am currently in the market for an AR-15, and I had a lot of questions, since I am used to a different weapons platform (H&K G3) from my home country. The guys I talked to during my visits were incredible helpful, they did not make me feel stupid for not knowing things but explained it all in an easy to understand way. I have been to other gun stores where the staff has been rude or rushed, but not at Bullet Trap. I highly recommend the range as well as the gun store if you are located in the North Dallas area. read more

The service at this range is horrible! The guy servicing us was dry and attempted to speak to us as if we were unintelligent scum. He gave a sheet of rules to read. One of the rules said that ALL bags had to be placed on the bench in front of you when in the range. So I asked if I was able to keep my cross body purse on me and his smart ass dry response was I don't see why you can't so I reminded him of their rule and he tells me that's obviously for bags with ammo etc. I told him no that's not obvious since the rule says ALL bags and doesn't specify only bags with ammo. After reading the paper he asks me if I have any questions and I told him no so he stares at me so I told him 1 thing from the list of rules that it told me to tell him and he says that's 1 and that theres 1 more thing. I told him that's a statement and not a question. While he's so busy desperately trying to belittle someone he's actually making himself look like the dumb ass. He didn't offer any explanation to his little reading test, when you ask a question he tried to be a smart ass. He was so rude that we walked out. I would not give this place my money. Two other staff member saw this interaction and said nothing. That says a lot about this place. Not only does it look like a dump there's no point in complaining when all the staff finds this type of behavior ok. Where you spend your money says a lot. Go somewhere where they will appreciate your service and treat you like it. read more

Worst gun range in Dallas let me explain, NOO A/C indoor ! It's older than your grate grandma. You will be sweating like crazy your eyes will fog up. Worst customer service in the history of Customer service. Only has 1 rifle lane. I've used to go to Bullet Trap for nearly 20 years. Just moved back to Texas a few months ago. I was told they can't sell me a gun due to me still having an out of state drivers license. Understand... But my wife did, and I brought her to buy the gun. They jerked us around asking for different docs then when we returned, they said no. My wife bought a gun at a great place with a Reputation much better than here!!!! Took the FBI not even one day to approve her. Asked a couple of gun stores about that law, they said no such thing!!! Now a 20 year customer gone forever!!!!!! I don't believe any of the positive reviews here, must be written by employee's. Talked to many who said they went down hill since new owners. read more

The place is super hot. Just like you read on other low-star reviews. People that didn't know were wearing jeans and long sleeves. They were sweating profusely. Also, there's one particular guy that is desperate to impose his will on everybody there. Just like the reviews mention. He started yelling and being rude to our group. I had already read the reviews coming in so I stayed away but the other two in my group got the worst of it. The location is in a bad area as well. So hot, rude service, and bad location? I signed up to get my LTC through Groupon and the experience every step of the way has been VERY smooth. For the class, Peter was the instructor and he was awesome. If you don't know already, the class is 6 hours long, but Peter made it enjoyable and it flew by. Upon completion of the class, he gave each of us specific steps on what to do next and again, I don't think the process could have been any easier. Aside from the class and Peter, the other employees are very helpful and knowledgeable on the 120+ guns they have for sell. There could be some cosmetic improvements to make the place more "modern" but that's out of their control. It's strange that it's owned by the same person/people as the place in Frisco and this place isn't near as easy on the eye. I'll continue to work with these guys! I am not much of a fan. They obviously cater to their members (and they should), but being in law enforcement, I figured that they would be accommodating. Hard to get new members treating people like this. Instead of treating me like a customer who they need to come back to make their business successful, I felt as if they were doing me a favor. The long and short, DFW Gun Range on Mockingbird will take care of you and I think (although not sure), that they are more reasonably priced. Best of luck with future members. I've gona a couple times, in the evening, it wasn't very busy and all of the staff was friendly. My only complaint was that I went the first week of November and it was a bit chilly outside and I wore a sweatshirt/hoodie and it was extremely hot on the range. I was sweating bullets! I briefly looked, but it look like they had a wide selection of guns to choose from and rent. Renting a gun to see if you like it sounds like a pretty good idea. There range fees for non-members seem reasonable. I may check out another spot before I decide if I want to become a member. I think if you go in the off hours, maybe early morning or later in the late afternoon/evening, you may get better service than if you went in the middle of the day or on the weekends. read more

Do they even care? Smart asses spouting out orders at customers across the room when I was trying to tell the crackhead with glasses, I needed a part for my pistol. Then telling me after i took my ENTIRE gun apart, "we don't sell any parts." At this point, I'm annoyed and fed up. I've never put my gun together THAT fast ever out of anger. This was the only range in town many years ago, but no longer. They have some competition now, but they still act like they're the only game in town. As many other posters have noticed, they don't really know the law and just make it up as they go along. I bought some reloading supplies from them and they claimed that they needed 2 (TWO) forms of I.D. LOL The range is a tad too warm in the summer and a tad too cold in the winter. Yes, other posters have noted that if you shoot the string, stick, or clips, you'll be charged exorbitantly. I've never had trouble with this though, because I never miss. My targets are just one ragged hole in the middle of the bull's eye. Yeah, the lighting is real dim in the range, but most shootings are in dimly lit back alleys or at home at night or in the parking lot at night, Also, animals usually move between bedding and feeding grounds during dawn and dusk, so most hunting is also done in dimly lit situations, so I just chalk up the dimly lit conditions to realistic training. It's a decent range and gun shop, but there's better, however, they still act like they're the only game in town with their attitude, actions, and amenities. They're my "Plan B" gun range and gun shop. read more

This review is in reference to having a firearm transfer done here. PRO: Electronic ATF Form 4473 so you don't have to manually write it all out which is nice. CONS: Charges $10 - $15 higher than the average charge for a transfer. Can take an extended amount of time after firearm is delivered to inform that it is ready for pickup (sometimes up to a one day delay). Although it is legal for an FFL to accept an out of state ID from a private individual for a transfer, they refuse to accept them and will only do FFL to FFL transfers. If you don't mind paying a little extra for a transfer with the possibility of having a delay receiving your firearm and with the restriction of only having FFL to FFL transfers, then they could work out for you otherwise there are other places that offer transfers that cost less with more options and faster service. read more

This place has gone downhill on selection. They used to have several Smith and Wesson revolvers. This time when I went in about 2 months ago they only had 2 or 3 instead of 20-25 of them. If I wanted a .357 or a classic model 29 (44 magnum) then you could forget it because they didn't have it. The help used to be friendly and welcoming. This particular time I went in I felt like it was the scene from the Wayne's World movie where Wayne plays some loud notes and the seemingly tired and bothered sales person shows up and says "Can I help you" He might of just came out and said "What do you want!?" "Or are you going to buy something?!" All in all I would give this place a 2.5 stars or a C-... It used to be a solid B+ (Their prices have always been more expensive which is why I couldn't ever give this place a 5 star rating) Unfortunately I will have to just find a different place to purchase a revolver. read more

Also, in case you are not already aware, this is the only gun range in the entirety of the LARGE city of Plano. There are other gun ranges you can find if you are searching for them in Plano, but none of these are allowed to use live ammo, the majority do tactical training with practice paint or rubber ammo. Bullet Trap remains the only allowed range, I am guessing (but not far off from the truth), because they slip the right money to the right people at the City of Plano to keep the "live range" licensing out of any other business's hands. I will further update this when I can link some evidence of this to the review. If you weren't going to boycott this range due to their treatment of you (especially if you aren't white) then you definitely should for their unfair business practices. The best alternative range to go to: Garland Public Shooting Range. It's outdoor, but they have great target ranges, and if you want to zero your AR at 100 yards and then shoot for 200 yards, they have the room to do that. read more

After reading some of the reviews about The Bullet Trap I have to say I was a tad bit worried I would not be a happy customer, however, just the opposite occurred and I loved my experience! As a woman this could have been an intimidating event but I have to say my evening there ROCKED. I grew up with a dad who owned weapons, both for protection and hunting. When I was younger I would shoot weapons with him and enjoyed the time. But life happens and after high school I've seldom picked up a weapon which bothers me because I know it's my responsibility to protect myself and my children in case some crazy person tries to hurt us. Last year I went to another Dallas gun range and the class was boring, it was myself and a friend who went and we got to shoot a small amount of ammo and I didn't feel confident enough after that class to take my own weapons to the range. If they covered gun law, it was more of a mention to push gun owners insurance rather than your rights as a gun owner which bothered me. I still did not have any confidence after the class and knew I needed to take a class again, which led me to The Bullet Trap. The reason I mention this other establishment is to point out the difference I felt after visiting The Bullet Trap in Plano and having Jeremy as my instructor. Again, I had no confidence in handling my weapons and no confidence in knowing the laws and when and where I can carry my Glock or my 1911 as a non CHL holder. So I was looking forward to the class and praying it would help build my confidence in both areas. Jeremy was funny, approachable, and excited to share his knowledge with everyone in the class. He was able to share real life experiences and share detailed information. Obviously, there is only so much time and a lot to cover so questions were welcomed which allowed him to share more details on any subject. The class included 10 people total. Because there is so much information I plan on scheduling private lessons with Jeremy to expand my knowledge. After class, it was range time. We were able to shoot 16 different weapons with five rounds each. I Love that the Bullet Trap started us off with .22s and worked us through .38 (wow they are loud), 9mm, then a 45 (which was my favorite)! Jeremy and his co-worker, Eric, helped us on the range. Eric was great too. Being able to learn about the weapons then having so many to shoot was the key for me to gain enough confidence to bring my own handguns to The Bullet Trap for range time. I will definitely be back. It helped that Jeremy educated me on my rights as a gun owner, and I learned I can carry my weapons in my car, concealed without a CHL. I am a 40 year old woman and felt welcomed and encouraged to ask any questions I needed to ask. Upon check out the rest of the employees were phenomenal as well. I can't wait to go again and have penciled in range time every other week for the foreseeable future. I will definitely go to The Bullet Trap again. read more

Extremely knowledgable staff. Everyone here was super accommodating, very friendly, and it looks like a fun atmosphere to work. Purchased a G43 and will also be taking my Concealed Carry testing here. The salesperson allowed me to test shoot the weapon before I purchased it and waived the lane fee after I purchased. They have a large variety of firearms and accessories and the lanes are in great condition with excellent lighting. I also noticed while shooting employees regularly swept the floors the keep the shells from getting all over the place and being a tripping hazard. As far as indoor ranges go in the DFW area, I think Bullet Trap is one of the better ranges. In the past couple years they have remodeled a bit, revamping the shooting lanes and the restrooms, making it a lot cleaner and more well ventilated (which is important in an indoor range). The indoor range has around 20 pistol lanes and a couple rifle ranges. On the weekends, especially Saturday afternoon, it can get packed and wait times can be 30 minutes for a lane. Each lane has a motorized paper target hanger so you can adjust your distance anywhere from 3 yards to 25 yards. For an indoor pistol range, 25 yards is pretty sufficient and longer than some other ranges, like DFW Gun Club on Mockingbird/35. Behind the actual pistol bays is plenty of room to maneuver around, and trash cans for spent targets are regularly cleared out and brass consistently swept. This makes for a very clean shooting environment. As for ventilation, in their remodeling they've really upgraded the venting, so you don't feel like you're inhaling all the gun smoke all the time. However, sometimes the drafts from the vents move your targets around, making it harder to judge your consistency on your gun. Also, it can get kinda cold in there. There's a sizable gun shop which carries basically any pistol you would want, and it also has a decent selection of rifles and shotguns (although for rifles and shotguns I would recommend going to a place like Bass Pro Shop in Grapevine). They also carry a selection of used firearms on consignment. I would say the prices are fair and in-line with retail expectations. You do get a discount on firearms if you're a member, around 5% maybe. The expertise though is a great service. The staff is very knowledgeable about the firearms they carry and offer objective advice and will only give you their preferences upon request. Very friendly and will basically answer any question you may have. They also offer regular CHL (Concealed Handgun License) classes, which in my experience were very well run and informative. Again, more expensive than some other CHL classes I've seen advertised, but in my opinion it is still worth it. Overall pricing can be a bit expensive, including range fees and range ammo. There are certainly less expensive alternatives out there, but I believe the added benefit of service is worth the added expense. Regarding Melissa's post about the safety at Bullet Trap, they assume you are at least somewhat familiar with firearms, or are with someone who is familiar. No one should ever shoot a firearm without proper instruction or familiarity. That being said, they offer a great intro to shooting class on Thursday nights. I've taken the class and highly recommend it to anyone who has absolutely no experience with firearms and has no one to really introduce them to the wonderful world of guns. read more

I just moved to the area and was looking for a range to go to that is convenient and has good rates. The closest to me was bullet trap. The first time I went there I was assisted without any problems and all my questions were answered without any attitude even if it meant that it was not going to end up in a sales. I was narrowing my choices between bullet trap or target masters due to location but decided to stick with bullet trap because of the membership with no hassle weekday range time. I went there again today to confirm my choices and was immediately greeted and helped with a courteous attitude. After talking to a clerk I was asked if I was helped after by another clerk. The previous comments did make me wary of coming here but through personal experience it has definitely made my decision set in stone that I will sign up at bullet trap and will actually go shooting tomorrow. The layout is different compared to the pictures so just like the comments it is from old experiences. Times do change so you have to experience it yourself. read more

One of them was to go to a gun range to practice shooting a gun that was given to me as a gift many years ago. I'd never shot it, didn't know how to load it and wasn't sure it would work although it still looked nice in the leather pouch. My guy friend planned a Sunday afternoon for us to go and target practice. When we arrived at Bullet Trap there was a 30 minute wait so signed in and spent time walking around looking at the guns and accessories inventory. There is a small seating area and vending machines to enjoy while passing time. Once our names were called we requested addition ammunition, eye and ear protection and several targets. The range was small but comfortable and pretty self explanatory in terms of being able to figure out where to go and what to do once we found our lane.
