I have been clearing blackberries and brush in my yard. It is a large property & somehow I lost my keys while working on it. I needed to get some backup copies made for my front door key. Home Depot, Lowe's, Ace Hardware - all 3 said they don't carry the blanks and cannot make the keys. So, I decided I needed to try a specialty locksmith. I took the key to Bulgar ( In Lake City area of Seattle, WA) and found out it was a high security lock/ key combo seldom used on houses - they were able to research the marks on the back and locate and special order the key blanks once I provided my personal ID. All the while they were very polite and explained it would take a few days. This was OK. I was still able to get in and out as I had 1 key - just wanted to order an extra for back up. Next Issue: I needed to replace the lock on my mailbox - I had removed the lock to bring in and match it for a replacement . I'd already been to Lowe's, Home Depot and ACE looking for the replacement. To no avail - they do not carry the right type of locks. Bulgar actually did have them in stock. Again - they are better quality locks than those carried at the local hardware stores. What a relief to finally find it after so many trips to so many stores! I could not look up the keys & mailbox lock and Key online because it had no names or numbers on it to identify it from - the pros at Bulgar even had difficulty finding it and determining exactly what it was - it is about 25 yrs old. They eventually solved my problem however. The cost to replace the mailbox lock at Bulgar is $6.95 if I install it myself which can be done with a small set of pliers and a small wrench. Versus ordering a replacement thru the USPS which requires 2 trips to the Post Office ( 65 miles to and back from my house ) and 2 trips - one to order it and one to pick up the keys once they replace it. It does not require a locksmith - your postman can do it or you can do it yourself. This is just a money maker for the USPS. People lose their keys every now and then. No matter how careful they are. It just happens. But the Bulgar guys helped me to configure a custom set up to. hook the keys to my belt or handbag so I wouldn't accidentally lose them again. This is the same set up they were using personally and it is not made up and sold pre-packaged anywhere. I now have 2 sets of them and I feel much more confident of being able to keep track of my keys while attending to multiple complex tasks. The workers at Bulgar the day I went in were very polite, knowledgeable and helpful and went out of their way to help me and save me money. They were looking for the most effective & economical solutions to my complex lock and Key problems! The situation was getting stressful for me with so many failed attempts to locate the right Locks and Keys! They did their best to put an end to my stress. They explained everything to me really well. They were very professional. I truly appreciate the level of good service I was given. It was just the kind of old fashioned service everyone would like to receive when faced with a problem like this. Helpful, problem solving and good natured and reasonably priced. A+ Service! When I left the store they even called me to follow up on the order and be sure they had ordered the correct number of extra keys I wanted. All in all - I am impressed and happy with their service . I will receive my newly ordered keys in a few days. And I will return to update my review. read more

Came in here about a couple of month ago to have a couple of keys made for work. It's not the normal keys you can cut at a kiosk so I thought I would give these guys a try. I gave my keys to the young man behind the counter. He looked at them for a few seconds and told me "these are security keys with these codes and I'm unable to duplicate these and you will need to contact the manufacturer." Keep in mind, The keys had a few numbers and letters on them but it DID NOT say "DO NOT DUPLICATE" I went back to work and contacted the manufacturer and asked about the keys and the numbers/letters on them. They told me those are just the model number of the keys so they can special order them. ‍‍‍ So I guess the young man behind the counter didn't want to do the extra work and told me he couldn't copy them or he just didn't want to help me. Bulger Locksmith rekeyed our condo building and handed out primary and spare keys to all owners. I lost my back-up key. None of the hardware stores I talked to had the blank. When I talked to Bulger, they said they did not make residential keys, period. I pointed out that their company had already replaced our buildings' keys, they lied and said they had not. They told me nobody would copy my primary key. They could have said (for example) "Your HOA does not permit these keys to be duplicated, " but instead they made up a story. How sad I am to see how this business has changed. We had used them a few times when we had a business and had been very happy. Brought a small safe in to see if they could open. Brought in on Thursday early was told they would call within an hour waited an hour and half. Went back to business was then told they would work on next morning and call within status. Never called I called them. They Asked to leave over weekend. We talked about what to expect. I agreed. Monday comes and no call nothing. I waited until afternoon. Called nothing had been done. They would call in morning. That would be Tuesday. Waited for several hours no call. So I called again. They were working on it and would call. Which they finally did. But it took three days to finally drill key hole out. Which we had agreed on this process Thursday. Lack of communication was miserable Then when we picked up I was given this sorry for the delay. Which i returned comment regarding communication and was left with nothing. We will not use this company again. read more

"Road Rage by Van 34" Was driving today southbound 405, transitioning to west bound 520 towards Seattle - see this Bulger Safe and Lock van driving unhinged - estimated speed of maybe 80, weaving in and out of traffic, creating a hazard and dangerous situation, as it was raining hard. You dont see this very often here in Seattle, so was compelled to draw some attention. I had 2 keys duplicated here. I've had a hard time finding a locksmith who had blanks for these keys (been to 3 already, plus several little key kiosks) but they had them here. $6 per key and about 30 minutes (I was getting multiple copies of each key) and I was on my way. They were pretty busy nearly the entire time I was waiting, so it seems like people like them. The first person who helped me at the desk (Auri) was super chill too. Can't speak to how they do for lockout situations etc, but for key copying they're fine. read more

I reached out to them when a key got stuck in our lock and broke off. It was drilled through and needed to be fixed. I called Bulger and explained what had occurred. I sent photos of the lock that needed fixing and asked for a quote. They said they would have to rebuild the whole mechanism to fit my old door and/or I'd need to find a replacement lock system that would fit my odd sized entry door (of which size dimensions they don't make anymore) - thus still requiring some major fixes. The estimate could not be given based on the heavy kind of work they predicted. They said even if they sent someone out to look at it and nothing could be done they would still have to charge their full regular house call fee of over $100. None of that sounded reassuring so I started looking elsewhere. I found an honest, kind, and hard-working owner/operator in Ravenna Locksmith (Howard Nevitt) who told me right away over the phone he would be able to fix the problem with ease, and did! Great help from Auri and Eric in the workshop Excellent company . I get the impression that they are proud to keep things working for decades maybe centuries. Got rare keys made no problem. Rebuilt and rekeyed a 50 year old Medeco lock. They made keys for my car that worked better than the brand new Toyota key that struggled to unlock driver side door. Bulger cut me some room key copies about 3 weeks ago that ended up not working. Apparently, it was due to the blank the automated grocery store machine had picked for my "original." My roommate and I arrived at 5:17 last night, Friday, and were crest-fallen to see that we had just missed operating hours until Monday, once I'd already rung the front door intercom. But just as we turned and we're walking away, Jeff, a long time technician appeared from the back and opened the door and asked if he could help us. I explained the problem and what we were here for and then I even had a different unique key that he hadn't even seen before to copy. And before I knew it he's offering to take them all inside to fix and recut them for me with no reciept, nor charge, after hours! What?!?! Have I time-warped back 40 years when small businesses and customer service satisfaction mattered? 8 minutes later he's at my car with five keys the 2 old ones fixed, 2 new ones just in case, and one that he thought would have a shot to copy my strange new lock, and even explained why the original I've been difficult to copy. It turns out he even knew and recognized my roommate's mom a local long-term businesswoman in the community, but I'm pretty sure that's not what was driving his service. I have used bulger for 25 years. I ordered 2 blank keys for a odd vehicle over the internet. Went to have the key duplicated. The person behind the counter did not want to help and said they are the wrong blanks. They fit in locks and had them duplicated somewhere else with no issues. Had a great experience getting a bunch of house/garage/mail keys copied here. They're open during typical business hours on weekdays, and you can pop right in for service or lock/key-related merchandise. Security and COVID safety protocols are tight: you have to buzz in, wait for someone to come to the service counter, and there's Plexiglas separating you from the employee behind the service counter. As of July 2021, masks were still required and everyone I saw was compliant. After you discuss what you need, you get a quote and an order slip, and you head out to wait in your car (there's a small but sufficient and well-paved parking lot). I was told it would take twenty minutes to have about 12 keys made, but it was only about 7 mins until they texted me that my order was ready--very nice. Payment was quick and pricing was fair and accurately quoted ($49 for 12 keys of various shapes and sizes plus color-coded key covers) and the keys all work beautifully (NOT my experience when getting copies made at Ace Hardware). read more

Love these guys. We use them for a variety of issues at work. Always excellent service. Most recently an issue around "clickers" for one property had us going in circles. Mike at Bulger was just on the ball and kept me up to date on the arrival of the order so I could get it in person and end the madness we were dealing with at one of our properties. It later turned out that miscommunication on another side gave him and I bad info on what we needed from the start, but even realizing all the work I did and the rush Mike did for me was for naught, I have no regrets that they are our preferred vendor for all things locks and clickers. Bulger was the developer's installer of the locks on my historic townhouse restoration project in Capitol Hill. The reference to use them came from the management company of the homeowners association. Buger sent Adam out last August, to "unstick" the historic front door lock that had recently been rekeyed (by Bulger, for the developer). Despite Bulger's having performed the original work, I was charged an additional $180. to oil the lock and cut two new keys. The lock was working when the tech left. This winter, when temperatures went down to the 30s, those new keys and the lock have failed again (January 2013). I called Bulger with the August invoice information last Monda. No response for days until I contacted the owner (Mike) who said he wouldn't honor any work on historic home locks. I asked that Adam come back out and fix the problem again anyway. Still no site visit to fix problem and I can't use my front door. TERRIBLE customer service and follow up!!! read more

The old guy tried to charge me 45 dollars for a latch, and asked for 240 dollars for installing 2 steel plates on my door. I realized why they call BURGLAR & safe lock. I needed to make copies of my apartment keys and Bulger is walking distance from my work. I came in, gave them my keys and picked the Seahawks keys for them to make the copies out of. Minutes later I had my new keys and paid a reasonable price for their services. I tried out the new set of keys when I got home later that day and to my complete and total surprise they worked perfectly. Who would have thought?! Oh, right... I thought that. Bulger has serviced our 24 unit condo building on Boylston for some years. They have NEVER done anything right. Nothing they install works right. We paid them to replace our 1930 ornate brass hardware. They put in a cheap crooked strike plate that doesn't fit the jamb and doesn't keep the door closed -- and then THEY STOLE OUR ORIGINAL HARDWARE which was easily worth $1,000 if not more. Bulger can't even install something as simple as a door closer. We have to call them back every month or two to "repair" what they screwed up before, and they always charge us for these service calls. I will resign from my HOA board, of which I'm currently President, if our building manager or our board ever uses Bulger again. Incompetent, rude, sloppy work and workmen. read more

Need car keys made? This is the place! Getting a key made for your car may seem like a simple thing, but if you have a newer car (lets say 2000 or later), chances are it has some sort of anti-theft mechanism built into the key that will need to be programmed. That means that you can't simply walk into a hardware store and have a metal key made. You need to have a key with the RFID chip in it so the cars computer will let it start. Long story short, I called the dealership to have this done, and was a bit blown away by the price! On the recommendation of the folks at a local repair shop, I called Bulger. They told me to bring the truck there, and kept it for about an hour (theres a Starbuck's up the street to the north where you can wait). I got 3 new keys that work great, and it was less than half the price the dealership quoted me! Very happy. Will definitely be using them again for all things lock/key/security related. read more

I brilliantly locked myself out of my apartment while my fiance was away and my landlord's office was closed because it was the weekend. Bulger Safe & Lock was recommended to me, but they weren't open yet so I just went online to get someone to come out fast. Sure enough, found a bunch of "local" guys who would come out for only $15 in the next 30 minutes to see what the situation was and how much it would cost - definitely too good to be true. It ended up being a local number that redirected to a call center, and when they sent out the local guy he was extremely sketchy. He car's back window was blown out, his side-view mirrors were busted off, and there was a magnet decal saying "locksmith" on the side of it. He took one look at my lock (only the bottom handle was locked mind you, not the deadbolt) and said that he could try and pick it but this brand is very hard and would most likely need to drill, which seemed odd to me. He also wanted to charge me $200. I happily sent this guy on his way with his $20 (he didn't have the $5 in change conveniently) and now that Bulger's was open I called them up and a man named Dennis was sent out in about 2 hours. When I asked about potentially drilling the lock on my handle they asked me "why would we ever need to do that?". Yes I waited a little longer, but Dennis showed up in a branded work van and dressed in a uniform. Not only was he extremely nice and knowledgeable, but the time between him looking at my door to the time when I was in my apartment was without exaggerating about 30 seconds. Oh and did I mention it only cost 99$ and I didn't need to replace anything? Don't do what I did initially, learn from my mistake and just go with Bulger from the start. read more

My house was burlgarized a few days ago. In broad day light, the asshole(s) punch a hole through double layered window on the side of my front door. They reached in and opened the door and screen door, then walked away with jewelries, electonics, and personal documents. The police suggested a deadbolt that requires a key on both ends. I contacted these guys and scheduled for a tech to come and change out the lock. The technication was professional, came during the scheduled time frame, installed the lock and cleaned up afterwards.
