I moved into an older home with a door that has a mortise lock, meaning you need to both open & close the door by twisting the key into the hole. It's very inconvenient. I lost one of the keys, but thankfully I had a spare. I went to Lowe's and Home Depot, but they were unable to make me a copy. They didn't have this key. I called this shop and they told me to bring the key down. This is a little stand inside of Ballard Square, a shopping mall. There was a line when I went, but I imagine it wouldn't be busy all the time. When it was my turn, I handed the key over and they made me several copies of the key. For 5 keys, it cost me $20. Keep in mind, they only take cash. I went home and tried the keys and they all worked perfectly! It was fast, easy, and affordable. I would definitely recommend if you're needing to make copies of keys and particularly any unique types of keys. read more

The integrated lock on my Kuat bike rack had failed, leaving my bike stuck on my car. I was incredibly stressed out. Employee took the time to make a steel practice key (and gave it to me afterwards) before cutting the permanent key just in case the practice key failed. An honest and reputable business! We called Ballard Lock & Key for an emergency lock replacement on a Saturday morning. After sending photos of the broken lever/deadbolt combo I was informed by BL&K that this was a pretty straightforward fix that I could probably do myself and they even explained what hardware I would need. Right at the top of the stairs at the 2232 NW Market st. building step right up with your key questions or business. I came while the owners - Bob & Christina were present along with their technician who I don't recall his name. He did have a puppy named "Oliver" though so there's that. They're all very friendly and engaging which is always nice especially when it's just errands, you're running. I brought in three keys I wanted spares for. $3 a pop, so $9 which is just the amount I was looking to pay. Bob lamented about his Square pos not working. He spoke about getting it second hand and even when he calls up 'Square' they can't do anything since it's second hand. He laughed about it, which is a nice attitude to have, but understand that annoyance. That said, bring cash. Bring your keys and cross off the need for key copies. Read these reviews, they're not lying. This is the place to go. Being a West Seattle person, I used to go to Burien for my car keys but they closed their walk in store and went mobile. Every mobile place I called and left a message never returned my call. I tried a West Seattle locksmith near me which I know be expensive and now under new management, they were completely clueless about the needs for my 2015 Kia, clueless. (Btw, somebody broke into my car destroying the door lock and ignition, so I bought a used set on Ebay and installed it myself, it's very easy to do, it came with one key/fob only). Anyway, finally I called Ballard Lock and Key. The phone person knew exactly what I was talking about, so I drove out there. Though I had the address I couldn't see any store front, you have to enter the building and go upstairs, which is also where the DMV is. They also have free parking in the back. Evan was behind the desk and quoted me a very reasonable price and got right to work making my new duplicate keys. And said he could also re-program my key fob for me. Cool! I could see the little machine reading my key before starting its routing/etching process. Now I can use just the key only and not have to carry around the fob if I don't want to. Another employee stopped in with some other projects. Everyone is really nice and helpful, no grumpy employees here, they are very patient with any questions you may have. Extremely friendly folks and very accommodating. I called them up on 12/24 to see if they could do laser cutting. I have a diamond shaped BMW key from a 2004 model vehicle. They looked up the car and said they could do the cut however they closed at 5pm, and it was 4:20 and I was in Bothell. I let them know I was coming and they said they would be there. I safely drove down, parked and showed up exactly at 5:00. They were expecting me and were able to make the cut. It took them about 5-10 min to cut both sides of the key. They charged $30 for the side cut key (laser cutting). I was able to do the programming myself after some online research. They key worked great, though was a little sticky. However after 2 days of usage it's pretty smooth and I have no complaints. If you need the key and programming it sounds like they partner with another company, which charges the same as the dealer. So if you need full service on a BMW key, I'd suggest going to the dealer. read more

called at 930 on A Friday to ask if they can duplicate a gate key, was told that they cannot tell without seeing key, but that they were open at that time. told them id come over and drove 25 min from Cap HI'll. shop appeared to ge closed with locked metal gate , sign stating hours 10-3, different from website and also different from what shop employee had just told me. looked at sign that said their shop at 2232 was open for key duplication, suggesting this location was different from the ones I was standing in front of. called number again to clarify where this key duplication location was and spoke with snarky employee whe said "you might have spoken to me, I'm not sure" and told me that the reason no one was there is that they open at 10, and added "if you just wait 10 min we'll be there." Eventually he showed up 5 min late, "are you waiting for me?" Couldn't duplicate the key, not their fault, but won't come here again for the passive aggressive customer service. TL:DR Ballard Lock & Key is Awesome and Bob helped me out big time. Seriously saved my bacon. I have a last minute house guest for 3 days and haven't yet made a set of spare keys for my new place. Not thinking, opted to not get copies Saturday and put it off till Sunday. Well apparently no Key Smiths are open on Sunday. I call Ballard Lock & Key and explain my situation. Told him I'd gone to two stores (Fred Meyer & a hardware store) and neither could duplicate the key cause it's "specialized." I described the key, and he told me the physical key by itself costs about $5 and he could possibly make me a copy. Bob asks me where I am, and I said the hardware parking lot in Ballard. He was en route somewhere, but at that very second was crossing the Ballard Bridge! He got to my location in 5 minutes. Our keys are a copy and a copy of a copy, so we told him they aren't the best but whatever he could do would be appreciated. He made the copy, explained to us why it wasn't an optimal key and showed us the areas of weakness. In the end I tried to pay him and he declined, because although the key would likely work he wasn't 100% sure. He also gave me the names and locations of places that could help on Monday in the event the key didn't work. Went home and the key works great. So happy. Bob beefed up a door lock for me recently and only charged me for the price of the Lock.. I gave a 5 star rating then, but now I am doing it again because Bob and his wife took time out of their day to Help me get my car out of Towing, all the way in Federal way., as it was stolen in late December and recently impounded to the Tow yard. I had no way of retrieving it, so I just asked him for help. He didnt have to help me, but He Did. Im not sure even a relative would have been so helpful.. He has restored my faith in good people.. Bob and Christina just finished rekeying and fixing a handful of our locks. They provided a very comfortable experience given that these are keys to our home. A few of our deadbolts were either worn out or not properly installed and had a good amount of play in them, and they were also able to address that as well - we now have some very smooth and tight tolerance locks, which I'd have to say feels confident inspiring when you lock them.
