Late review, but after a whole day of work, my team just needed a good meal that fills us up. We went every night for dinner- it was that good. While we came to Glendale, we were hungry and I typically always search for places on my Go-to App- YELP! But this time, my wife found this place, by just searching on her phone... I was too busy to search. Well, I must say that I was a bit speculative at first. We were in the Northern part of Glendale near Highway 134 and Highway 2. I thought were in the world will there be Sushi near us? But she found a place. BUKO JAPANESE RESTAURANT is located in a shoping center tucked in the middle of a residential neighborhood. You can easily miss this place. It is between various other Armenian business and has no large sign. Once we found it, I even thought is this place even open? Once we got closer, they have a few seat out side for dinning. Once you enter, the location will surprise you. It's not like many other large or trendy Sushi locations. This place has more of a Mom's & Pop's- Sushi- place feel. It is small, intimate and I felt at home with my family. Usually, you can feel the noise, the buisness and your aware that your eating at a resturant. It looked like locals or regulars only came to this place, which made it feel quite and comfortble. Just a good time enjoying some authentic Japanese food with the family, I even forgot that we were at the restaurant. LOL!! I didn't feel rushed, no large noise interruptions or distractions. The food came fairly quick, was delicious, well prepared and filling. Substantial amounts of well sized portions dishes were served. Went here for lunch with a friend. Friendly staff seated us right away. We both ordered the lunch specials. Mine had teriyaki chicken and sushi. Hers had pork katsu and tempura vegetables. They came with miso soup, a small salad, rice and a strange little scoop of potato salad I think. It was good but not magical. read more

The man who I suspect is the owner is kind and will throw a smile our way or will greet us directly. Love supporting this business because the food always tastes great. I have resided near Glendale for most of my life and have never noticed this place. It doesn't look very inviting from the outside and the inside is not the most aesthetic either but the food, the service and the prices were great. The sushi was so fresh tasting and the combo comes w rice, miso soup, salad, and a little mash along with the two main portions of the options. We chose salmon teriyaki and veggie tempura but there was also an option to add sushi, gyoza, chicken etc. instead! I especially loved the albacore delight and it's play on textures with the crispy fried onion, creamy sauce, smooth fish w the chewy "crab" meat and crunchy cucumber in the center! But I think most of all our server Tagashi made the experience so comfortable and memorable. He sat at our table to take our order and made jokes w us having us pick our straws out of a line-up and handing my mom a cooking fork when she asked for a fork. Buko is tucked away from the busier Downtown Glendale, which makes it a little easier to get to. It is in a plaza, so parking could be tough depending on the time. Staff is very friendly and accommodating, despite how busy the restaurant is. The prices are reasonable and range, as you have a lot of choices from chicken curry to cut tuna rolls. One order is enough if you're mildly hungry. If you're super hungry, definitely recommend the bigger options (example: salmon teriyaki combo or udon). Family and I have been eating their food since the beginning of businesses opening up after the pandemic. It's easier to get a seat than other sushi places and it has more variety. Customer turnover/wait times isn't too bad either. Amazing if you're looking for a Japanese restaurant in Glendale. If you're looking for higher end, super fresh, you may have to travel farther. read more

This was our second time ordering from Buko, so I know it wasn't just a one time good experience. DELICIOUS. GREAT QUALITY. Popcorn lobster roll, baked scallop roll, rainbow roll, eel roll, sushi, edamame, miso soup, you name it. Just solid and hits the spot. I won't be needing to try other sushi places. I loved this place as a kid. I came here regularly in the late 90's-early 2000's. Since then, management and ownership definitely changed it up. It's now a pretty timid and casual Japanese restaurant, no funny business, just easy eating. I would say that in recent times, the food has been okay. I've read some other reviews, and like others have mentioned: Buko does not give enough food for the amount of money paid. I think I agree with this statement. The portions get smaller and smaller each time I visit. Is the quality/taste worth mentioning? Yes, this isn't a subpar roadside Japanese restaurant. They truthfully care in the kitchen. I just want extra meat! lol Of course, I stop by every now and then for memory's sake. It holds a strong place in my heart as a childhood restaurant and I'd love to see it succeed. For $12 bucks you can get a pretty decent sized combo. Comes with salad, soup and rice and2 choices. This last time I splurged and decided to go with two items and pay the extra dollar or two. I had the combo with the spicy tuna roll and the sashimi. Fish was fresh and tasty and the rule was made just right. Again, if you're looking to pay $15-$20 a roll for something that's a work of art by all means go ahead. Here you're going to get some pretty tasty food for a pretty decent price. No, not necessarily a work of art but definitely something your pallet will enjoy. It's never really too busy for lunch so you'll always find a place and the staff is always friendly and eager to help. I have about 12 items to choose from for the $12 lunch special. Everything else is on par pricewise with other places. Quality overall it's pretty good. Food is always good. My husband likes the sashimi deluxe platter. And I love the two-item dinner special with saba and beef short ribs. The grilled saba is juicy and full of flavor, better than my home made broiled saba. And the Japanese salad dressing is probably more authentic than those in other restaurants. I lived in the area for 20 years had never been there. I guess maybe because of the location. In fact, I had been to the Armenian grocery store next to it a few times...it just never noticed it. I stumbled on it here looking for a good sushi place. We were pleasantly surprised. We don't each Japanese a lot, but probably once every two months or so. We like the sushi, Tempura, and Ramen. The sushi was excellent though of course I am no expert. The Ramen was average, I have had much better. Tempura..Great. We used to drive all the way to Monterey Park when we wanted really good sushi, which I hated(the drive)....anyway...now we have a local go-to place. I used to go here years ago when I lived just one street down. It was my go-to Japanese restaurant. One day, I decided to order take out (mind you it was quarantine season). I had sashimi and short rib bento box. It took them about 15 mins to complete my order and I only lived 5 mins away so by the time I got home and ate the meal, the food was still pretty fresh and warm... I paid maybe around $17 and it wasn't worth it. The sashimi was so fishy and not at all a "'melt in your mouth" sensation. The meat was overcooked, and majority of it was just the bones. I am so disappointed because I had thought this place had authentic taste years ago. I am still willing to give this place another shot in the near future and may update the review, but for now, my opinion is "do not recommend." read more

This place is great. We haven't eaten IN the restaurant in a couple years now but the takeout has been great throughout the pandemic. I love the sushi, the Japanese curry, udon, bento boxes. The quality is consistently good and my kid usually eats his food. I've also noticed that they switched to florescent lights since they reopened after the first wave of 2020. I don't know if that's a cleaning precaution, but I hope they go back to the warm lanterns in the future when we do go back to eat inside. read more

Went for lunch. I had the spicy tuna roll and chicken katsu lunch box. Chicken katsu was excellent. Crunchy on the outside and tender and moist inside. Wife had red roll and sushi combo. I'm so very bummed to write this review - we've loved Buko for years! But the quality the last few visits hasn't been up to par, and I just experienced maybe the worst service I've ever had?? I ordered one roll - literally one roll. And kept watching table and table get heaps of food. Finally asked what was what, and they clearly hadn't put it in or there was some mishap. No worries - it happens. Until I notice the roll HAD been delivered - just to the table next to me. (Why no one at that 5 person table didn't think to mention to their server that they didn't order it is confusing, buuuut anyway). They remade the roll but it took a wildly long time and my kid had already plowed through his two cucumber rolls and edamame. Their only solution was a lackluster "sorry" and they comped the edamame. Honestly? Not good enough. They should've comped the roll - again, the entirety of my dinner - because the whole thing was so screwy. I still paid the bill and tipped because I'm a sucker, I guess? But sadly this will be our last time at Buko. Hoping someone reaches out. read more
