Been in here three times. Everytime there have been more than enough employees just sitting around, when I asked a simple question each time met with scowls and dismissiveness like I was interupting. I always ask with a smile and friendly excited energy and always get a bad feeling in this store. Also everything is twice as expensive than elsewhere. They have a nice selection of tools and out in the lumberyard, and the people working are generally friendly. The major downside here is how expensive they are, everything is at least 15% higher than at the Home Depot in Olympia, so it only makes sense in a pinch. read more

So many problems with this place, it's hard to know where to start. Their inventory is unreliable. If you buy something, the odds of finding the same product when you return seem pretty low. This is especially true of paint; that base paint they mixed for you last week is likely to be out of stock or unavailable in the size you want (good luck with 5 gallon cans). They're capable of egregious missteps mixing paint as well. I had them match a white I needed using a 5 gallon Valspar base they suggested. Although touted as "self-priming" it had horrible coverage even with multiple coats. When I complained they admitted no fault, so I had it matched by Sherwin-Williams, who had a very difficult time (took 4 hours and 3 attempts), but ultimately provided a great paint. What was wrong with the Builder's paint? They mixed a shade of white using a clear base. Sherwin-Williams said, "it's like this paint has no white at all"). I wish I had known better, but Builders has no excuse for such a basic error. Their prices are high. A $4 soffit vent at Home Depot is $15 here. I'd be willing to spend 2x to support local business and save driving, but 4x is just insulting. Because they keep untreated wood in their outside yard (why??!!!), things like 2x4s are often sodden, warped or otherwise in poor shape. It's not uncommon to find maybe 1 in 4 acceptable boards. The staff are usually friendly and try to be helpful, but this doesn't offset all the negatives. Unless you quickly need something small, take the extra 40 minutes to drive to a big box store or a Dunn lumber or, well, almost anywhere else would be preferable. read more

I suppose when you are the only show in town (unless you want to drive to Olympia, et al) you are not going to have many reviews (only 4, with one not recommended, in the past 8 years at the time of this writing). Who knows why that's the case, but... I came into town to assist with building a fence at a family member's home. It was either buy lumber and cement here, which was more convenient, or drive to Olympia or Tumwater wasting time and spending money on fuel. We inquired if they do price matching, as the product was cheaper elsewhere, and were told no. So be it, what we needed cost around $50+ more and the cost of the gasoline to go elsewhere would have been about the same. The next day we returned with a nail gun, loaned to us by a friendly local carpenter, to get the correct nails; as well as pick up some more lumber. The nail gun owner stated he purchases all his nails from this fine establishment. We waited in line and upon reaching the counter the gal, who moved like molasses, had no idea and referred us to a fellow employee. This guy looked it over and stated he had no idea either (the model # on the nail gun was obliterated; it was an old, yet reliable, piece of equipment). We then inquired about the extra lumber we wanted to purchase and this guy referred us back to the original employee and stated we had to get back in line. The line was now 6 deep (remember she moved like molasses) and we said fuck it and left. Fast forward a couple of hours and the owner of the nail gun came to the work site. We explained our dilemma. He said something to the effect of WTF. He went with us back to the store, walked right over to the nails and obtained the correct ones needed to do the job. He also informed us that they have always done a price match on lumber. WTF? Yeah, this experience could've been better (2 stars)! read more

This yard has always had a poor selection of hardware and removing the nail bins made it worse. Prices are high to very high on hardware while lumber price is high and quality often below average. (If you need lumber or building supplies delivered Tanglewild in Lacey is cheaper [even in Mason County]). The only saving grace was the high quality of service but that is rapidly declining. Still some good people there but more and more clerks who are overtly rude and / or do not know what they are doing. Unless you just need a small item it is probably worth driving into Olympia . read more

This is a good business, definitely a huge plus since HD is 25 + miles away. The lumber I've bought is fine and the hardware side of the business is good too. Customer service is good however, You may have to wait a bit during busy hours to pay for items as the 2 or 3 cashier line usually opened can back up. read more

I went there to get a piece of plywood, and needed it cut to size. They said they did not guarantee accurate cuts...... I did not expect an accurate cut, but what I got was ridiculously far off. I took a pic and showed it to the counter guys...... they agreed, AND THEY AGREED TO GIVE ME A NEW PIECE OF PLYWOOD. KUDOS TO THEM! So the guy in the warehouse cut the new piece and it was fine, but he had a really pissy attitude. So GREAT GUYS on the counter, but I would not like to deal with guys like the warehouse dude. Again great guys at the counter!! Not sure I would have them cut plywood again..... Hardel in Oly does this for me with no problems...... and again I am not looking for super perfect cuts..... So my two stars avarages 5 for the counter guys and 0 for the warehouse guy with an attitude. read more
