This review is going to be based on my experience as a seller... If you plan on selling your clothes at this location you want to hear this. I brought 3 bags worth of clothing to sell. I walked in and there were 2 people in front of me. Both people ended up receiving all their clothes back (NOTHING was bought from them). Then, it was my turn. The person going through my items was "Ginno" - the store manager. He is absolutely the worst. In fact, my advice to all those planning to sell: if you walk in & he's behind the counter, just leave. There is no point in trying. He barely LOOKS at whatever he is going through. He literally picked up my items, unfolded them, and then just placed them on the counter to give them back to me. Side note: I own high quality, brand name clothing -- I wasn't walking in here with my H&M, Forever21, etc. and walking out shocked that nothing was purchased. He's rude, he's incompetent, and he will waste your time. Don't even bother. read more

I keep having really pretentious experiences at this location and it's really unfortunate. The first time I came here I was told that I had to make an appointment. Maybe because of COVID? They told me to wait 20-30 minutes and "maybe" they could appraise my clothes. I was fine with that. The workers were a bit snooty and flippant. I waited about half the time they suggested before they said that they were just too overwhelmed by the amount of clothes and that I needed to make an appointment. I am not sure if the workers had much experience in this area because it felt like the customer service was lacking. As someone who has worked in increasingly demanding customer service jobs with high levels of client requests where I haven't had a moment to catch a breath, I was a bit put off by the flippancy and inflexibility they had when it came to something like the simple task of appraising clothing. Of all the potential jobs a person could have...believe me, working in a retail consignment shop where all you have to do is look at clothes is the LEAST debilitating. Especially in a deadly pandemic with 10.1 million people unemployed. Nevertheless, I acquiesced and asked what times were available--to which they responded that they "didn't know" and that I "have to call". Why would I call a store when I am already there? Will they suddenly know what times are available once I leave the store and call them? Just take a breath and check your system! The second time I came to this location, I booked an appointment over the phone. The customer service was great. I was greeted by a much more pleasant rep. I left about 20-30 items with him. He mentioned he was running behind so per his request, I waited 30 minutes for him to finish and browsed the store which had exactly the same style of clothes in my wardrobe. I am someone with solid taste, both designer and thrift clothes, and a changing aesthetic and diverse apparel. But this guy accepted just about 0 of my items. I thought "well this seems kinda weird. It's not like I even wear the same styles." I've been featured in multiple fashion magazines. I know my shit is tight.... but I digress. There were rompers, simple dresses, a plain brown coat, skirts, jewelry, trousers, a necklace in my bag. The rep rejected my clothes because "the store is only representing 'sporty casual' right now as that's what's 'trending' ". LOL Something about that response was laughable to me as just about everything in the store was random, even the very clothes on the customer service rep-- ironically, Purple Overalls. If the process of consignment is this complicated and random, then just have people upload pictures of their clothes for the review process ahead of time and THEN have them come in to collect money or use the store credit. The process as it stands now, seems arbitrary. Moreover, the taste in apparel comes off equally so. Some of the workers can be very pretentious at times and have very little regard for others' time. What they see as "trending" is contextually unclear, nor does it seem to be represented in the store itself--from counter to clothing racks. I am giving 1 star. Although, the guy who took my transaction the second time was actually quite nice about it and I genuinely did love his outfit--those overalls were dope af--I really had no idea what he was talking about. But that "sporty casual" thing definitely tripped me up and made me laugh because it perfectly encompassed how obnoxious this store can be and how it really needs some serious infrastructure. If sporty casual means: no crop tops, no pants, no skirts, no dresses, no jackets, no rompers, no jewelry...then I am guessing it must mean "naked" because what else IS there? There were several other very full bags next to mine that others had left that had been rejected. It's just outlandish and obnoxious that so many diverse clothing items from clients are not "in" or "trending"... What kind of hipster stuff is this? Either humans have evolved passed needing clothes or this business model is clowning folks. Don't have people spend time and money coming to you if you don't have a consistent system in place, you lack good customer service, or are likely to turn them away based on your individual idea of something. Instead of this arbitrary and inconsistent pretentiousness, figure out what you're actually marketing, be consistent, and be willing to meet your clients' needs by making the process more convenient for them. I PERSONALLY witness two black people being followed around the store by employees. I was doing the exact same things as them but they were the only ones being followed. Another woman noticed like I did, and she immediately said something to one of the managers and it wasn't taken seriously. I then witnessed an African American woman attempt to tell the manager how uncomfortable she felt being watched and the manager basically made it seem like they just watch everyone. She talked over this lady and interrupted her so many times I just put my stuff back and walked with her out of the store. Very nice vintage store. My daughter found cute shirts 10$ each what a bargain. There are so many cute jeans Levi's guess and anything else you can possibly find. Place is so cute when you buy item you get a token to donate out of your purchase some money automatically to charities. I chose a children's charity but there are 2 others. Place has cool clothes shoes bags boots and earrings and other stuff. Adorable cute stuff. Definitely worth the $$$. You must purchase a bag we did not we just took stuff with out a bag. I always have som good luck at the buffalos in Brooklyn as opposed to the city. I got 4 items that came up to +$70 but I did sell clothes so I paid nothing out of pocket. Their stuff can be pretty pricey but sometimes it's worth it. Especially for me where buying shorts can sometimes be a hassle and I found a cute pair that fit perfectly. The manager helped me with an issue I had with my trade card but was able to settle everything. Can't really comment on customer service because it wasn't bad, but not good either. read more

I came with a bag full of excellent clothing to sell. I brought several great pairs of jeans and a cashmere Uniqlo sweater that I was willing to part with for very little. They took nothing. I was not cool, hip, or young enough. Then I felt that familiar bitterness. That sting of anti-nonhipsterist discrimination. I am surprised that this lady behind the counter would let an anti-nonhipster agenda get in the way of doing solid business. If you're going to force people to wait in line for 35 minutes to sell back their clothes, how about placing an employee in the line to sift through everyone's belongings and weeding out those whose clothing you deem "unacceptable" for Buffalo Exchange's "high quality standards". THAT WAY we don't have to waste half an hour in your store that smells like a combination of a Subway sandwich and unwashed hipsters. Furthermore, when I wade through the unwanted garbage that you call merchandise and find faded denim button-ups and rhinestone-covered skirts that my own mother would turn down (and, trust me, she has bad taste) I find it a little hard to believe that my brown leather jacket and denim jacket..both in excellent shape...are turned down by your prissy "buyer" (honey, you work at Buffalo Exchange, not Marc Jacobs...tone down the uppity). I Went there with my boyfriend recently and we found some of his clothes being sold, except they were from the pile of clothes that the buyers had rejected!!! This place is one of the reason people hate Williamsburg. I went here to sell some things, came with 3 bags of clothing, left with 3 bags. What did they buy you ask, one pair of roller skates (70's style) one look a like fendi bag. I know what you thinking, maybe you stuff was ugly, i had a ton of plain sweaters, plain white tees an hats, and a redic amount of jewelry and wallets and purses. The uber hipster behind the counter waved my things away. So when the choice came down to 19 bucks store credit or 11 bucks cash, i walked about the store....sweaty pit stains on white shirts, boots scuffed beyond belief and some of the ugliest jewelry and peeling wallets i have ever seen. I am fully aware that that things are used and won't be perfect, but there should be standards and maybe a little diversity. If you dress like a dirty hipster, u'll love it. But if you dress like an adult with a job who pays their own rent, don't even both lol :Sigh: i hate this place. read more

Hmm. What to say. I used to like Buffalo Exchange before I tried selling them clothes. Well, that's not entirely true. I've gone there before thinking I'd find something cool and fun and left feeling that not only did all the clothing smell of cigarettes, but that it displayed an absolute lack of taste in the men's department. And now I know why. Sam, the buyer, who rifled through my things didn't seem to really know what good guys clothing was. Perfectly maintained dress shirts were passed up because she didn't like the shade of blue. A hoodie from Spain didn't make the cut because of the way they had vented the end. A cashmere-wool blended topcoat was passed up because no one would need it now; does anyone seriously NEED anything they buy in a vintage shop? Meanwhile, a sign hung behind her saying that they were in need of men's clothing, in particular well-kept men's clothing from mainstream stores. Hmm. Then perhaps it's best not to hire NYU students wearing shredded rags to sort through people's items. But what made me incredulous, having shopped there, were the comments about how well the clothes were taken care of. I have seen wool sweaters that were obviously shrunk, or had holes or sections missing hanging from their racks for upwards of $30 or $40. As someone who takes damn good care of his clothes, I was pissed off. And the comment at the end of the experience, "When the store's full like this, we can't accept any old stuff. Sor-ry!" Well, let's just say that she earned Buffalo Exchange a one-star rating and one less customer. read more

Came across this place completely by accident. To be honest I've never really shopped in a thrift store before. So much fun! But I did not like while looking through a rack of clothes having some crazy lady push all the clothes on her end to one side, completely closing out my little nook I had going which made me lose my spot while digging for something good. Don't waste your time! Most of the clothing for sale is junky crap from forever 21 with holes and mystery stains. Forget about selling here! The buyers are rude, pretentious, and obnoxious. I brought a bag of designer label clothing (Marc Jacob, Vera Wang, and French Connection), that was in current season and amazing condition. I also had gently used items from Urban Outfitters and Asos. Everything was rejected. This included a dress that I previously purchased there (bad decision) and decided to sell back. Definitely worth a stop when in the area! I definitely prefer this location to the one in the East Village, and for a multitude of reasons. Reason #1: Not claustrophobic. The space is large and fairly well organized. There were no clothes on the floor or flung carelessly on the racks. It also wasn't as crowded! Reason #2: Kind employees. I didn't need any help as I was just browsing, but I had two very pleasant ladies chatting me up and offering to help. I spent a good 10 minutes talking to one of them about Marc Jacobs and the mess of his "junk stores" in the West Village. We talked about his bags and how many of them each of us owned.... (I only have 3, don't judge me!) Anyway, it was nice to randomly talk to someone about my Marc Jacobs bag obsession and know I'm not alone! Reason #3: Bigger selection. Probably because the store itself is bigger. Duh. Reason #4: It's clean and everything I saw was in good condition, even the shoes! Anyway, I saw some cute jackets for ~ $20, American Apparel "dresses" (you know they're just long shirts) for ~$8, reasonably priced shoes, and a decent selection of jeans. I ended up snagging a great pair of Joe's Jeans for $14!!! They fit wonderfully, and did I mention they were $14? Yeah. read more

This review is from a selling standpoint. I've sold to Crossroads before but thought why not try Buffalo Exchange and see if they'd offer me more money. I was completely wrong. It was partly my fault though, not really knowing who Buffalo Exchange caters to and what type of clothes they sell. The buyer whom was looking through my clothes was definitely interested in the more "funky" and/or "eccentric" items I had. I feel they they care about how an item looks and then the brand. Choosing something that looks great even if it was a no-name brand. Buffalo Exchange isn't where you want to sell your Zara or H&M stuff. They only took a couple items and the rest I took over to Crossroads and they took the rest of what I had. Which I completely regret because I probably should have just taken everything over to Crossroads and would have gotten more money. If you have more funky/eccentric/one-of-a-kind clothes come here. If you have more Zara/H&M/designer/on-trend clothing go to Crossroads. I'd recommend Crossroads over Buffalo Exchange for buying or selling any day. read more

Much better than Beacon's Closet for several reasons: 1) the staff is really upbeat and friendly, and TALKS to you! They will even offer to start you a fitting room if you are overburdened with your finds. 2) the racks aren't ridiculously overstuffed and dark. I like that you can SEE in here, and there is room to move around. 3) the quality of merchandise is better picked overall, and you don't have to worry as much about damaged goods as you do at Beacon's. 4) They actually organize the racks by size! 5) They don't blare the music so loud so that it is unpleasant to shop here, and the music is upbeat and fun. 6) Selling is not an unpleasant experience here. I sold a bit of stuff here recently and they went out of their way to let me know, in a friendly way, why they were taking some stuff and why they weren't taking other stuff. I didn't need them to do that, but they were so sweet about it. It's almost as if they are deliberately trying to work against the kind of bad reputation that Beacon's has. It's really nice, and pleasant. I can not beat the fact that I found SIX pairs of jeans that actually fit me, and I am challenged to find ONE that does in a retail store. But maybe I just got lucky and some girl with my shape sold a bunch to them before I arrived :-D read more

This is a review for buying back, not purchasing items in the store. The workers seem nice, that is to each other, and could care less that you're standing there. Don't even waste your time trying to sell things at this location, they donate 99.9% of it, even when most of the items have price tags still on them. Then they tell you they're "too used looking". Most of them weren't even worn! I stood in line for 30 mins mid-week in the afternoon and watched as everyone in front of me sold MAYBE 1 or 2 items at most. In short, waste of time. This is THE Buffalo Exchange to go to in NYC. I will say this: The buyers now are significantly less talented than say 5-6 years ago. Outside of that, I've found Supreme Parkas here for 30 bucks. ALL kinds of cool sneakers in good condition. People that gave this spot a one star are sensitive cuz their clothes were rejected. Lol, your feelings will be hurt if your clothes are wack and you try to sell here. Oh, they'll try to be nice to you about it, but you're still gonna feel a ways and rejected. It's part of selling used clothes so don't be butthurt. Because whatever they reject, Cross Roads trading company a few blocks over will buy from you for sure. lol. Significantly better selection than other NYC locations. Dudes who work in Streetwear dump a lot of their extra clothes here too. The come-ups used to be BOUNTIFUL. I love this buffalo exchange! I come here very often and I always leave with at least one thing. The pieces are great and I often find things that look brand new or have tags on them. The store is nice and spacious and well organized. The staff are super friendly and there's lots of dressing rooms. The type of clothes here are more recent and not really vintage if that's what you're looking for but you can still find unique and interesting pieces. The only thing I would change is I see a lot of stuff from cheap online retailers-- like the ones that advertise on Instagram and sell clothes that are too good to be true cheap and are really bad quality in person but other than that can't complain! read more

I don't like having too many choices. Even buying toothpaste from the drugstore gets to be a hassle when there are fifty different brands available, which is the main reason why I really, really, really like this particular Buffalo Exchange: there aren't racks and racks of clothing packed to the gills like Beacon's Closet, which can make thrifting more akin to physical exercise than shopping. Sure, there are plenty of crappy t-shirts and mediocre jeans to get through, but there are also Watermelon-printed Vans for $17 and lots of adorable summer dresses. As far as selling clothes here, I'm an even bigger fan. The salespeople are always friendly and fair about their choices. I sold a bag of items today and received, along with those aforementioned goofy Vans, about $60 in cold, hard cash. Some of the items the manager bought from me had been rejected by another BE salesgirl only two weeks prior, so be persistent, but also sensible. Nobody but nobody wants your octogenarian mother's size 14 flowered pantsuits. read more

My first Brooklyn Buffalo Exchange experience: Clothing: super cute, a little overpriced compared to San Francisco finds, but I scored a black tank and cute vintage looking sweater. All the racks have clothing arranged by size, which made it easy to find stuff. Employees: One of the new employees was super friendly and very helpful. Told me places to get wine, told me about consignment shops and overall extremely helpful. Then the employee at the dressing room correctly guessed that my shoes were Deena and Ozzy. Very impressive. So why I am giving this store only 2 stars? Purchase: The brunette 'trainer' lady who rang me up was super rude and did not bother to greet me. I have never ever experienced customer service that smelled worse than my dog's poop. She didn't say one word during the transaction, looked bored and distracted, and just flung the receipt at me. This store is pretty small as far as Buffalo Exchanges go, but it was the first in New York City and is still pretty awesome. I remember BEs based on what I buy there, and at this one, I found the best pair of jeans I've ever owned--a fabulous pair of dark Rock and Republics hemmed to the exact length that fit me. Somewhere out there is a girl my height and size that I would love to thank in person for passing these jeans along. My only complaint besides the size is the location. It's a bit of a walk from the subway and in a very dodgy-looking area. I'm not very familiar with Brooklyn, but I know I wouldn't want to walk there alone. I'd rather stick to the newer location in the East Village, where I assume other BE loyalists have headed. read more

You could be disappointed by the pricing they give to them or they even might take any of item, which could worth very well in another store. Love the cleanliness of the store and really appreciated the variety they had to offer. As a male, thrift stores shopping is a little difficult because they mainly have women's but the amount of mens clothes they had to offer was great. We went today to try and sell some clothes and only took one pair of jeans and two shirts which ended us up with $8.10 which is pretty sucky. For consignment, I would suggest another place, but for thrifting I would say A OK. Plus, I found a pair of 9/10 condition doc martens for fifty bucks which was perfect because thats the number one thing I look for when I go to thrift stores. Okay, let me just start off by saying that I truly love Buffalo Exchange. It's a northern cali based store that i grew up on. All my best vintage goods have come from this lovely establishment. So imagine my joy when I found out that one was opening right in my fab lil hood! I have gotten some great little finds, and its sucks cuz its just around the corner (literally in the same building) as the gym I teach at. So I seriously have to bee-line for my bike and peddle my ass home before I get too curious about what lies on the racks around the way. Cute little tops and dresses abound! On another note, I have recently felt jilted by B.E. They offer a clothing exchange and lately they've become even pickier than Beacon's! And Beacon's is just ridiculous when it comes to trying to sell your stuff. And my shit is cute, damn it! I didn't get a good chance to look around, the way one should in a store of this variety.... However, I did notice their accesory selection, and I like it. There is alot to choose from. I also noticed, there was a large mens selection. In fact, this was the first time I've ever noticed a store having a bigger selection 4 men. So, gentleman this should B your thrift store. I sold some clothes here too. They didn't take alot, but I feel they were nice about the whole situation. (more so than BC) I've been to other BE, and I feel this one is on par with them... Whenever I go to Buffalo Exchange I always have the problem of paring down what I'm holding in my arms to a reasonable amount. There is so much stuff to look through so it's going to take some patience. This is not a good store to just run into to try to find something; you have to be willing to spend some time pawing through the racks of clothes to find something that works for you. I've gotten some great purses at this location as well as dresses. That being said, it's easy if you know you want a dress to just make a beeline to the dress section and go to town. I love organization. I can't stress it enough (and it seems weird to say) but make sure you try everything on. Even if you know the brand or know your size. I have found many things in the wrong size section just because that's what it says on the tag. So even though everything is separated by size, it doesn't hurt to look through everything. So, I thaught lets try this place for once instead of "Beacon's Closet"...My first time here was ok. I took several pieces to sell or trade for something that may catch my eye. However, they don't have enough buyers so you have to wait a while 'til someone sees you and goes over every piece with you. It took too long and they took less than half plus didn't offer enough for certain pieces which were worth more. Their stock is designer names or trendy styles but there is not enough of a selection to pick from...I rather stick to a mix of designers and form my own style. I am sticking to "Beacon's Closet" where I don't have to wait with my bag and where there's plenty of goodies for me to get! ;) read more
