This store is cool with a capital C. First of all, the guy working there (didn't catch his name but the hipster-y guy with the glasses, you'll know who I mean) was the kindest, most helpful salesperson ever. My attention was immediately caught by the table of minimalist, metal jewelry. The pieces by Sophie, a local NYC jewelry maker, were really nice, but I ended up with some silver hoop earrings. For $18, they are a steal. There are some really nice things here - and unlike a lot of boutiques, you don't have to spend a month's rent to walk out with some choice updates for your wardrobe. read more

I've been shopping here since the day it opened. I lived in Greenpoint before the ferries, before the condos, when the "waterfront" was littered with broken bottles from the Polish liquor store. This used to be a go-to for local designer streetwear and hand-hewn accessories such as leather bracelets, beautiful talon rings, and nice leather boots. I've bought quite a few Uzi pieces over the years, own their "kimono" belt, etcetera. The menswear often had heft in the textiles and nice, dark woven motifs were easy to find. However, the curation has turned much more... *basic* in the last couple years. The jewelry in particular looks incredibly cheap, made of cheap metal, like something you could get at a mall for teens. The new-in section is full of unflattering ecru and terra-cotta cropped and body tops that look good on NO ONE. Alter turned from something you could wear to a high-fashion cast reunion of Blade, to the same milquetoast Cali Instagrammer stuff you can get anywhere now. I've actually been to their new outpost in LA and got a nice deep green summer jumpsuit there, so this isn't to impugn their efforts to reach a new crowd, but come on--this is NEW YORK CITY headquarters. We need STURDY materials and designs with an edge. Even the music in the store now sounds like the b-side to the Ingrid Goes West soundtrack. Please, please get back to the core Alter feel because it pains me to see the same minimalist geometric crap and boxy, ugly, chunky linen sacks that every other boutique sells. P.S. I recently had a positive experience with this store. I ordered a beautiful scarf online and was awaiting it's delivery a week before Christmas. When I arrived home to the lobby of my apartment building during the evening, my package was torn open where upon some jerk stole the item out of the bag. I was infuriated as anyone could imagine. I have lived in NYC for twenty years and never faced a mail theft/tampering issue until now, which only happens to be a federal crime. I contacted my local police precinct and they were unable to offer help. They instructed me to reach out to the postal police, whom were also unable to facilitate my request for assistance. I then opened an account with the USPS to file a claim online, whose system crashed. It was quite frustrating. I realize it is just a scarf, but after I spent sixty dollars including tax, I truly wanted to add this to my repertoire of winter items because I liked the unique color and attention to details. I contacted the customer service rep, Monica, and explained my situation in the body of an email. It took a couple of conversations and approaches, but Monica stepped up, and happily replaced this item. She even waited to resend my scarf until I returned to the city after visiting family out west for the holiday to ensure I would receive it, which was thoughtful and decent. Monica was professional, accommodating and communicative. Certain businesses would have done nothing to mitigate the problem I encountered, but Alter didn't. I appreciate their timely response and how my honest nature about what took place was acknowledged, and lastly, the affect of good customer service where resolutions are found to impact, and to satisfy the consumer. There is a men's shop right across the street, in case you have someone of the XY persuasion in tow. I really enjoyed browsing this stores. Lots of leggings, cropped pants, jeans, dresses, skirts and accessories. I really like that they have "Greenpoint" inspired T-shirts. The prices are good here, and they do have some items on SALE! I live in the neighborhood and was ready to have Alter be my go-to place for clothes. Then this happened: I bought a $60 (not expensive) sweater, wore a several times and it started to fall apart. I assumed it was defective and took it back in hopes of replacing it with an identical piece. I really liked it. Here's how it went down: I was told by the manager that he "could smell me on it" and that he couldn't be certain of how I had treated it. Yes, he told me he could smell me on it. He said that Alter has a 5 day return policy and doesn't care if something is defective because there was no proof that I had not destroyed this piece of clothing made in China in the handful of times that I had worn it. Somehow smelling me on it was proof of this. SMELLED ME ON IT, seriously. After an argument, he generously (and he told me how generous this was) offered to allow me to exchange the piece for something the same or more expensive RIGHT THEN - no credit, no coming back another day. So, instead of giving me a $60 credit and the chance to come back and shop again and probably buy something nicer, I was forced to choose something right then. As I took my exchange, he muttered, "I just lost $60." First of all, we all know that the store did not pay $60 for the piece, and second, you didn't lose the cost of one poorly made piece clothing, you lost all the money I would have ever spent there. So the value of a customer is less than one cheap piece of clothing. Got it. Good luck with that. read more

Though my boyfriend likes to pretend he is wholly masculine and doesn't care about aesthetics, he gets VERY excited every time he passes Alter, whether the mannequins are sporting teeny-tiny men's bathing suits and canteens, or sleek looking pea coats and fancy jeans. It is the perfect spot to pick up a little something for the man in your life. Fr the dude's Christmas present I dropped about $100.00 on a handmade Maxx and Unicorn leather wallet. I came here with my exceptionally scrawny hipster of a brother yesterday and we had a blast picking out a tiny little mod suit that actually fit his emaciated frame - and this for a mere $250 all told. There's a nicely-edited selection of small-label, vintage and reworked clothing in this eensy space, for a nice range of prices, but what really made the experience sing was the wonderful Emily, whom I instantly wanted to annex as a friend. (She also couldn't say enough good things about the two owners, always a good sign.) Will certainly be back, and not just cause coolness is thin on the ground in the GP (although it is.) There's a certain rawther awesome late-70s fair isle sweater that I plan to buy, wear and rock with a pair of cuffed straight legs and some vintage Fryes circa my mother. Just sayin'. read more

A nice change from the larger department stores you usually run into in Manhattan. Alter NYC is a small set of two boutiques in Brooklyn, each of which carries a small selection of trendy, "hipster" style clothes for men and women. Personally, I ended up stopping by here after I read a review in the New Yorker about their highly customized offerings. To be honest, the boutique did not really live up to the hype: their clothes are somewhat overpriced and their choices are very limited. Still, I ended up leaving the store with a nice shirt for $70 :-\ All in all, Alter NYC is different enough that I would stop by here again if I were looking for something special, like a jacket or a suit. Still, it would have to be something pretty damn special to justify the lofty price tag... read more

Prices Reflect Being in Brooklyn, and not on Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. Therefore Likely to leave store in a good mood. Only criticism is it feels a little precious. On top of all the great items they carry all of the staff is knowledgeable, nice and helpful. You will never have anyone following you around the store pushing product on you which seems to happen at way to many boutiques. Easily my favorite place to shop, extremely recommended. read more

I'd heard of this place from the NY shopping blogs and kept meaning to make a trip out to Greenpoint. It's near the G line which means nothing to me living in the East Village so it was a trip I kept putting off. I FINALLY walked out to the spot and was happy I did. It's small but the male sales clerk was super nice and helpful. It is one of those places where you have to walk out of the dressing room to see your outfit which I HATE but not a biggie if you don't mind putting on a little fashion show. It's not a HUGE deal. On the bright side, they carry Melissa shoes which is a funky, creative, edgy (all that good stuff) line of shoes. So, ofcourse I Ieft with a pair and have my eyes on the red heels for my next trip. If you are a fan of the Cheap Monday line, then this is a great store for you. They have tons of their stuff ad well as similar lines. I don't think I will make a trip too often because it is a bit of a trek for me but it is worthy of a few visits to check out their new stock each season. I went into this shop today on a whim and, even though I didn't buy anything, was really glad I stopped in. Emily, the awesome sales person, was really helpful and funny and not at all pushy. I totally felt like I was out shopping with a friend! There's a great range merch here for different sizes and shapes and almost everything I picked up was on sale. They carry several Canadian designers (which I love, being a Canadian myself) as well as some cute vintage (shoes!) and reworked items. Overall there was just great stuff! I also went to Dalaga across the street and think that the styles of the two shops are different enough that they compliment each other without cutting into one another's business. I liked both -Dalada seemed fem and pretty and Alter had more simple, staple pieces. Both=Good. Also, Emily told me that Alter is branching out and will have separate men's and a women's stores ready to launch near the end of the summer. Can't wait to go, this time with my manfriend in tow. I was having a delightful Sunday and had just downed a delicious Bloody Mary (or two... but whose counting anyway?) at Shayz Lounge when my friend, the ultimate Greenpoint resident, told me that I HAD to go in. Not one to pass up something so strongly recommended I walked in and instantly was bombarded by an abundance of beautiful things. Trying to play it coy, like the budget minded lady I am, I casually perused around the store assuming that everything would be ridiculously out of my price range. When I finally decided to check out the price on one of the dresses I was shocked to discover that it was only $55. I was prepared for it to be $500. This store has everything you need.... vintage, footwear, dresses, jeans, locally designed jewelry... and all at a reasonable cost... They even sell Vivienne Westwood for cheap cheap. Needless to say I ended up dropping a few bucks and did not feel any buyers remorse whatsoever... and my purchases paid for themselves with all of the compliments I received! Hoorah for Alter... I came in while visiting NYC after ruining all the clothes I packed. Honestly all I had on was a dirty tank top, mesh shorts with ketchup stains, and untied shoes. And it was about 100 degrees outside so I was sweating as well. But the guy that was working didn't think of it and my friend and I talked with him long after we bought a few items. They have a nice selection of clothes, you should be able to find something that excites you. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because the prices were just OK, and it's a small boutique so the selection is a little limited. read more

This is the first time reviewing a clothing store, but I figure I should say that Alter is one of the best clothing stores I've had the experience of visiting in NYC. Being the budding fashionista that I am, I'm slowly branching out of some chain stores and into other horizons, and Alter makes buying brands such as Cheap Monday very...erm...cheap and certainly hassle free. The store itself is very small, yet each piece that was selected seemed appealing and generally well made, though I went during the middle of the end of the year blowout sale, so the store was somewhat picked over. I'll have to take a trip back later on in the year to see what it looks like fully stocked. I'm not sure which of the owners was there (I believe it was Tommy), but he was very helpful and nice, something that I don't really expect from a boutique atmosphere (but who am I to judge). I walked out of the store with a smile on my face from nice service, and the pair of black Cheap Monday jeans that I snagged for under $50 dollars. I'll definitely be back. read more

While you won't find an extra big selection, you won't find anything boring. I had to edit this since over time I can't really describe Alter. It is just full of really cool, unique clothing for guys and gals and they even have really edgy jewelry. The coolest thing of all is that you can actually afford it. The guys in here are always really helpful but in a mellow way that isn't overbearing. My buddy picked up a vest and tie creation that he constantly gets complimented on. A total Alter original! I picked up a ruffled shirt dress-it is way too cool for a nerd like me. If you are a nerd looking to un-nerdify yourself, just go here and turn yourself over. You will be nerdy no longer. When Hubby and I first walked into Alter about a year and half a go we were not impressed. Though that should not be surprising since both of us are design directors in the fashion industry and are really picky about clothing. He's a LOT more picky than I am when it comes to clothing and he is very rarely happy with anything. That being said the last three times we have stopped by we walked out with bags in our hands. The first time we went in, we felt that the buy was a bit scattered and unfocused. It felt like they were trying to be something for everybody. Not something I look for in a small boutique where I really want a point of view from the owner/buyer. That all changed recently. there is a distinct point of view. It is hip but not the tragically hip that you see the wannabe's that infest Williamsburg as of late. Alter's take on hip is all about wearability and stylishness. Last time in I loved the leather harness that they had and the linen suit jacket selection. Even picky Hubby has bought several pieces from Alter. Another great thing about Alter is the staff. The times that we have been in they have been very friendly and knowledgeable always a plus. read more

Similar customer return policy that other patrons wrote about still exists. I purchased 2 Life After Denim Shirts that totaled $289. I later looked on the LAD website to see what else they sold and saw the exact same shirts, each being prominently advertised $50 off. The next day I went back to the store and discreetly brought to his attention that the manufacturer was having an advertised sale on the items I just purchased. His response was that they stood behind their policy written on the receipt but not displayed within eyeshot in the store, "ITEMS MAY BE EXCHANGED OR RETURNED FOR STORE CREDIT WITHIN 7 DAYS OF PURCHASE. NO REFUNDS...". Curiously he asked if I could return to the store the same day(Sunday) so I had hopes of a refund since I technically had 7 days. Nope no refund in the amount of the discount difference. This was a price the manufacturer set, it wasn't Macy's or a competitor retailer. Life After Denim also sent me retargeting ads on Facebook, (as I went on their site and ordered the discounted shirts showing good faith that I wanted the merchandise)of THE SAME TWO ON SALE SPECIAL DISCOUNTED SHIRTS! So if I were you I would take the advice the manager of Alter gave me at the time I requested the refund, and check the internet in the store make sure you are paying the fair price. They have a nice selection and I've gotten a couple items in the past(Deus Ex, Cheap Mondays)I am happy with. But more than likely you are being overcharged quite a considerable amount versus, say, the brand such as Life After Death, Globe or anything they have in the rack. You won't get your money back if you don't check the price before you hand over your money. FYI manufacturers, when they themselves, on their own websites mark merch down, pass the markdowns to the retailers, such as B&H Photo, Best Buy, Doc Martens, so customers are incentivized to purchase locally, and the store is given a credit in the discount amount. read more

Another chic boutique store on the Franklin St. strip in Greenpoint, this small store offers a cute assortment of clothing and accessories for both men and women. Many unique items, including really cool "crinkle" neckties from $24-34. As with any indie clothing store, prices can be high, but Alter tends to cater to a clientele looking for unique and vintage fashion. A much larger men's section than Dalaga across the street. read more

I am from San Francisco, and have a thing for fierce boutiques. So I was ecstatic to be visiting Brooklyn and discover Alter. The clothes are stunning, and unlike the average garb that stores like H&M and Urban try to pan off as hip. This place was truly unique, and after looking through the whole store I chatted with the "Alter Boys" . They are amazing, and so nice, once again, unlike the usual snotty sales people in clothing stores. They apparently built Alter from the floor up, and hand pick each and every garment, and even construct some of the more avant guard pieces! as someone who has owned two boutiques---I will say these boys bring it full circle. The store is Tiny Time, but packed with good essentials and then lots of stuff for the wishlist. The owners keep pricepoint in mind which is refreshing and they are amazing merchandisers--which can be tough in a tiny space like this. I liked that this store was so clean and easy to browse. The associates were very nice and welcoming. I just felt that the merchandise was so limited. While they had some great pieces, I felt like they only really carried 3-4 brands and were a little overpriced.
