The staff at this location were extremely pleasant and helpful. They gave me a choice of three vehicles and helped me clean the snow off of the vehicle, since I was picking it up during a storm. Absolutely DISGUSTING. They didn't bother to clean the truck AT ALL before renting it to us and it REEKED of cigarettes when we got it and there was literally a pack of cigarettes left in the back of the truck, which shows they clearly did not even bother to check it for two seconds. It's filthy, sticky, and smells terrible. I literally have a line of brown cigarrette residue on my hands just from touching the steering wheel. They did absolutely NOTHING to make it right, expect to offer that we could cancel, which would leave us with no truck and no time to find a new rental location. Now I have to drive for 14 hours in this smoke shop on wheels. There is no excuse for why they thought this would be acceptable to rent to someone. read more

Day of our move after ordering a truck WEEKS in advance, there's no truck for us. We are moving with no truck and a time limit. There is ZERO sense of care or urgency. We're being sent to Paramus completely out of the way via an Uber which costs even more money. The lack of competence and care for their customers is astounding. Renter beware of this place. Unreliable. My son rented a truck about a month in advance for his move back to Boston at the end of August. We showed up the morning we were scheduled to pick up the truck only to find they had just rented out the last truck and said there were no other trucks available in the area. The woman working there was less than interested in helping us, told us 'it is what it is', was busy on her cell phone and apathetic about our situation. When I asked why no one called to let us know they wouldn't have a truck, she said that she only works part time and wasn't there the last few days so it wasn't her fault. I asked to speak to a manager but she told me that the manager/owner(?) Sheila was off and couldn't be reached. We ended up going to Eagle Towing U-Haul in Parsippany which was more expensive but they were really great to work with and I would recommend them again. read more

This place was extremely disorganized. My first time renting a vehicle and it was a terrible experience. I was simply handed a contract and not explained any further information. When I walked in and began the conversation with my confirmation I was told there was no one with the name. It took a while for them to find our rental. The contract was handed to me with no further explanation and now I'm charged an extra $60 for gas because I was not told to refill the less than half a tank we rented for 2 hours. When I called they told me "we don't give you free gas." We weren't asking for free anything, but when it's not explained to refill tanks or you will be charged, there's no logic in that. I'd much rather have filled the tank for cheaper than pay this fee I was unaware of. All I got from customer service was "I'll talk to that employee, who was it?" How should I know I'm not scheduling your workers. I'll never rent from here again. Horrible experience. At least this $60 was a life lesson to never work with budget again. Maybe have the workers here explain what is expected in the contracts before you screw them over. I'd have no problem with fees if it was explained to us and we failed to complete the contract, but when you're thrown a contract with no explanation and no directions this is when miscommunication happens. I would like to say it loud and clear that Budget Rent-A-Car SUCKS! I speak specifically about the Caldwell, NJ location! First of all, they hardly ever answer their phone and it goes to the automated system. So, if you need assistance, don't hold your breath! You will be dead! Their service is not dependable at all! We were in need of a cargo van which we rented for 2 days! On the day of pickup, they called to say that the previous renter will not be bringing the van back in time for our 11 am pick up. What? That shouldn't be our problem. Get us another van as we obviously have plans to use a van on this day and the next! Soooo, not only did they never call us back, at least to say, "so sorry, we are unable to get a van for you", but they close on Saturdays at 2 pm! So, I guess we got screwed! No answer, as I called continuously for 30 minutes prior to 2 pm! Only automated! Do yourself a big favor, pay the extra cost and go with Penske Rentals! I just don't understand how a company can have such poor customer service! And Yelp has forced me to choose a rating which they don't even deserve 1 star! read more

I had the worst experience here. I reserved a car online at this location to be returned at a Budget location in Toronto, Canada. I received a quote of $235 with my discount (it would have been $275 without) and had planned to pick it up at 6pm, although I came in at 5:15pm. When I came in Jennifer informed me that there were no cars available, although I saw several rentals in their lot. When I inquired about them and asked why I couldn't use one of them, as they were in the same class of cars I was looking to rent, she acted as if she were doing me a huge favor by letting me rent one. The entire time she kept looking at her watch and saying how she's about to close so people need to stop coming in. Even as people would call she would tell them that they were closed or that they were out of rentals, which was clearly not the case. Strike one. Although I had stated on the reservation that I was going to Toronto, I had to ask for the non-resident proof of insurance card. Jennifer proceeds to hand me an expired insurance card. When I inquire about it being expired, she said "oh no, you'll be fine." Comforting, right? After pressing several more times she then admits that she doesn't know if it is an issue and she'll call her boss. Does she? No. Strike two. She already had taken my license and credit card, and runs everything before confirming the price with me. She then asks me to sign/initial the printout. I glance down at the price and the price has jumped from $235 to $409. When I ask her how in the world could a 20 hour rental with a small car having minimal coverage be $409, she can't give me an answer. I told her that there is no way that renting a small car for this amount of time would cost more than a round trip flight to Toronto and refuse to sign the printout. I ask her to cancel the entire thing, as I have had enough. She says she can cancel it but CAN'T GIVE ME A RECORD OF THE CANCELED TRANSACTION. This is where the hilarity ensues. I ask again for a record for myself. She tells me that "if the charge appears on your credit card statement just come down here next week and get all loud with someone til they take the charge off." What????? She prints out a plain white piece of paper that says "Contract Voided" - literally just a white piece of paper with those two words on it. LOL. I felt myself feeling like I was about to spazz out so I had my boyfriend come in and talk to her. After she realized that we weren't going anywhere without a record, she finally decides to stop being lazy and print out the record. It took all of an extra 30 seconds. I will never come here again and if Sal wants his business to do well he'll hire someone that has more respect for themselves and the company. Side note: Ended up having to rent my car at the Budget location at Newark Airport later on that night - and guess what? The charge was $235, after all. Whomp whomp. read more

Worst rental experience I've ever had. When I arrived, I was charged a $60 increase than quoted because of an hour time difference. I've rented cars for years from pretty much everywhere, among national standards rental companies, this is a non issue. And at other budgets I've known it to be a non issue.. After disputing this for over half an hour I managed to get my correct amount. During the trip, I was witness to an accident involving someone else. When the police arrived I realized should I be asked, there is no insurance or registration in my rental vehicle. I called the local number to resolve this was re-routed to national customer service, and no body helped me. Upon returning, I was told because I had a pet I would be charged a $250 cleaning fee. I did have a lapdog sitting in the passenger seat of the car, and I understand the logic of this but I was never made aware of this before. And I have rented vehicles with my dog before and this has never been an issue. Perhaps because I usually rent from jfk, where they can properly clean. Anyways, at the manager's suggestion I took the vehicle to have it cleaned elsewhere. I spent 1.5 hours driving to 3 different car washes in Caldwell NJ, (because one was full and one only did exteriors). Upon returning I was told that the car was still not clean. But the manager would do me a courtesy and charge only $100. I found this to be ludicrous, bc i has cleaned it, and had they not known about the dog previously they wouldn't have taken the gloved finger out. Also, the car had no floor mats, which would have really helped with the cleaning process. Anyway, I found this particular location to have a locally run, we do what we want vibe, very cavalier. But it has turned me off Budget in general, and i will be making sure not to rent from them in the future, at any location. read more

I wish I could give this location half a star. First and foremost, the place looks like a complete disaster. Sal--the Owner / Operator-- also "owns" another one at Willowbrook Mall. I had a horrible experience with him penny pinching me for returning a car "late". Had I known that he operated this one I would never have come here. He is really rude and does not come off as professional at all. His appearance is like he just rolled out of bed, forgot to shave and is barely alive and just barely tolerating "these people" who are customers. I showed up for a vehicle and he was very abrasive and just horrible with customers. Not just me, but the other people wanting service. He seemed argumentative and like he had something to prove. Even over the phone he was telling customers what he COULDN'T do. If you tell people what you CAN'T do, you'll never get a chance to show them what you CAN do. Business 101. The worst part is, I have a corporate account. However, even with a pretty good deal...I'll never, ever go back here or any of his locations again. read more

You got the camera out of my personal car which was left unlocked in your lot and kept it safe for me until I returned my rental car and then - in addition - I forgot my LAP TOP in the rental car after dropping it off!!! I didn't realize I left the lap top until I was home in Brooklyn. You helped me ship it back to Brooklyn. Your business was fantastic. You guys went above and beyond. You were honest and contentious and didn't make fun of me for being extremely forgetful. So huge thanks to Sal, Mark and Katie. I have rented many many vehicles in my days primarily for my company needs, I will pass by three possibly four other car rentals to come to this location: with my initial experience here I was a bit taken back that they didn't offer pick up and drop that is a HUGE bonus, but the gentleman I dealt with was so pleasant even encouraging me to go online and reserve to bring my rental price where I desired it to be: Got there it was the fastest most efficient process I took longer getting my self situated in the vehicle after we did our walk around than the entire process: I had no idea in the coming months I would be shopping for a new vehicle and during this transition this rental location would be very beneficial to me: on my second visit I inquired about the gentleman who assisted me because of his wonderful customer service, But let me tell you I was now getting Superior Customer service, Her name is Sheila and I tell you No lies...... EXCELLENT her customer service her patience when looking for my reservation her consistent assistance, just genuinely great customer service very efficient you are really in and out his spot here I will always travel to so worth it, renting a vehicle has always been a frustrating process the wait the initial reason you renting if an emergency the paperwork...... The absolute worst. I made an appointment through Costco to pick up a car at 10am. I called and confirmed the reservation the day before. When I arrived I was told the car was still at Newark airport. The car didn't arrive until well after 11 - and we still had to go through the whole rental process. While we waited for the car, the employee explained how none of it was his fault and when the car finally arived it was explained to me that it wasn't that guy's fault either. This place is terrible. I rented two trucks in the past week and was floored with the customer service at this location. Sal was helpful and courteous and explained everything clearly. I will not be returning to U-haul at 1.99 a mile ever again. I had no issues with returning the equipment on time, full of gas, clean and with no damage, so I can't speak to how that would have gone, but I do know that Budget is a much larger company than Sal, and that all of the parts of the process that he was involved with went smoothly. read more
