Classic Southern breakfast--very much what Grandma used to make type of food. Portions are huge, prices are very fair, and staff were friendly. Do I think it's worth a line out the door? Probably not but if you go before 8AM definitely worth that wait length. It's a very congested building, small (probably original & supposed to be charming)--but you will be sitting on top of other people and when you have to leave there will be a lot of bumping into people as you shuffle to get out the door. I went with the country sausage platter with hash browns. Being a homemade biscuit maker myself (the only thing I can bake), my criteria is based on its flakiness, its internal gooeyness and a well browned top & bottom. This place had it all. This place is just a great quality, good old hearty breakfast place. When you think "large portions", think bigger and you have breakfast at Bryant's. I've had a number of things off of their menu. Eggs are fresh (you can get them cooked anyway you like), bacon delish, grits are creamy, and the biscuits/gravy are a true southern delight! They offer pancakes in a bunch of flavors. It's like Forrest Gump, but for pancakes...plain pancakes, strawberry pancakes, blueberry pancakes, BACON PANCAKES!!! Yeah, they taste as good as they sound (I've tried every flavor I just listed). So here's my advice on this place....GO EARLY and GO HUNGRY. They have quite a bit of seating, but I've watched that place get over 30 people deep by 9:30am on a Saturday. Coffee: The people at Bryant's have their priorities straight. While you're waiting in line to place your order, you can grab a mug or a go cup and fill up on coffee. The coffee is standard Folger-y diner fare, but I swear they add some extra caffeine to it - I was buzzing for hours. Biscuit: The biscuits are amazing. They're perfectly fluffy, slightly salty and have a lot of flavor. It's like they're baked in heaven every morning and delivered to Bryant's by a pack of hangover-curing angels. And the breakfast special comes with three of them, which is more than any sane person can eat. Bacon: Bryant's bacon was a little greasy, but it wasn't super crunchy, tough or salty. Scrambled Eggs: The scrambled eggs were light and fluffy. They had a tiny bit of runniness to them, but it was a patchy, inconsistent runniness. Pancake: Bryant's doesn't do regular bread pancakes, so they gave me a potato (hash brown) pancake instead. Whatever - it was so good, I don't care what it's made of. It was salty and greasy and flavorful. Love! Grits: People, grits are a blank canvas. They're the 8.5 x 11 white paper of the breakfast world - they need something on them to be interesting. The texture of Bryant's grits was right on, but there was no real flavor. Service: You place your order at the counter at Bryant's. They give you a number and nice ladies in shirts that say witty things about gravy come and bring you your food. Our first visit to @BryantsMemphis was on a Sunday at 8:40 am. It was pretty busy, but the food still came pretty quickly. I ordered the Breakfast Special with bacon (2 eggs, 2 pieces of bacon, 3 biscuits with gravy, & grits). It was made fresh and every bit of this tasted good My wife ordered the French Toast Breakfast (2-3 eggs, 2 slices of bacon & 2 slices of French toast). She liked the eggs, but decided she would go for the pancakes on the next go around. The coffee was good. It is mild, not bitter or bold, which is how we like our coffee (i.e. not like Starbucks). Note: There will be a line when you walk in (& it may go out the door at times). This is not people waiting for a table, it's because you order at the counter as you walk in the north door. There appears to be plenty of seating, even on a busy Sunday morning, even some tables outside for the warmer times. Some tables are 'family style', meaning you you may be sitting with other parties, which we chose to do. That's fine, be courteous and eat with your mouth closed. :-). Why, oh why didn't I read more reviews before I thought to myself "The gravy bowl is really cheap, it's probably small, I should get something else, too..."? Yes, the gravy bowl is less than $4. No, it is not small. Get an additional biscuit on the side to slop of some of the spectacular amounts of gravy involved and you'll be good to go. Added cheese to the bowl which was a darn good idea (I'm from Wisconsin, we add cheese to everything - it's a good life choice). I loved the gravy - great consistency and not too inexplicably spicy or peppery. Just thick and creamy and oh so delicious. Also split the cinnamon roll french toast with someone and it's as decadent as it sounds - a cinnamon roll sliced the long way in thirds and grilled up as french toast. Was served with a side of fresh strawberries, which was a nice touch. A table mate got an omelette that looked good, but 1) came with 3 biscuits which seemed like overkill and 2) at $8 seemed a little pricey in comparison to the other stuff. If I'd have been sitting there with that slightly pricey omelette looking at everyone else's specialty plates, I'd have been disappointed. Save the omelettes for Denny's. I've heard mixed reviews but my daughter and I went today and it was delicious. There was a line but it moved very quickly. My daughter got the omelet and it was chocked full of sausage and cheese, the eggs were light, fluffy and thin. I got the breakfast, it came with 2 eggs (how ever you want them) meat, biscuits, gravy and grits . Both our meals came with 3 big biscuits each and they were fantastic, you can taste the buttermilk.
