Brown Bear Baking seems to be the go-to bakery on Orcas Island. I ended up going with friends when we went into town, and the next morning, we all had Brown Bear goodies for breakfast, courtesy of Mike K. and Gino G., who provided a lovely spread for all their hung over wedding guests. I was impressed with the food, and was especially pleased with the variety of savory options. The quiches were fantastic. I tried the tomato kale and the salmon and would recommend both unreservedly. I also liked the ham and cheese croissant (oddly, I've had two ham and cheese croissants this year, and they were both on Orcas Island) and the peach croissant. I didn't get a good look at the bakery itself, as I did this weird thing I do sometimes where I waited outside while my husband and friends got their pastries and coffee, as I don't really buy pastries or drink coffee and wanted to avoid going inside and having to write a Yelp review (if this makes no sense to you, don't worry, it's my problem). I can say it was busy, though, and probably a good place for people watching. In fact, it's maybe the best place. The day after the wedding, when all us guests had gone home, Mike and Gino got an amazing omen for their marriage: they went to Brown Bear and saw a uh, mega-famous talk show host who owns property on Orcas Island. We'd been joking about seeing her all weekend, and I guess The Secret works, because she appeared before the newlyweds at the bakery. Anyway, if you like pastries and quiches and coffee, hit up Brown Bear Baking while you're on Orcas Island. Who knows? You might walk away feeling personally blessed. read more

Pretty good baked goods right in the heart of Eastsound. Small bakery without a menu as they have rotating items featured in the window. I ate here a couple times years ago when visiting and then again each of the last 2 mornings while visiting Orcas. Staff was friendly and attentive. Bakery was clean and lively. Gorgonzola & Chive Scone - 5/5 really the best thing I've had here. So good, love the density, cheese and chive combo. Soft and chewy inside, crusty outside, but not too hard. Currant Scone - 3.5/5 - no need to get one of the Gorgonzola & Chive one is available. Orange Morning Bun - 4/5 - a bit too crispy on some parts. Wished it was a bit more doughy. Quite sweet, I did like the orange hints throughout. Croque Monsieur - 3.5/5 - would have been so much better if they warmed it up, but they didn't even offer to. Big disappointment and taking away a star just because of it. The cheese, sauce, ham, and asparagus were all pretty good, although tepid. Not many options on the island for a quick breakfast or snack to go. Regardless this is a great spot, if only for the Gorgonzola & Chive scone. read more

This place is pretty much everything you would hope for in a bakery while on vacation. They had a nice selection of sweet and savory items, everything tasted as good as it looked, and they had a nice selection of places to sit and enjoy your tasty treats. I had trouble making up my mind and the staff helped me make a decision with solid recommendations. My waistline wasn't happy after being there a week, but thats my problem, not Brown Bear Bakings problem. read more

The shop's hours are limited to weekends but they are worth the extra work. We came at 11am on a Saturday and fortunately the line wasn't too long. Once you're finally in it's a little chaotic between people coming and going and trying to figure out your order. Luckily you're greeted by a beautiful display of all the baked offerings. We ordered the Very Berry Muffin, Bear Paw, Passionfruit parfait, ham and leek quiche, and homemade granola. Our total was around $50-60 so these pastries are not inexpensive but they're worth the price tag. Everything we ate was delicious and high quality. My highlights were the passionfruit parfait and quiche. We tried to get some pastries before our 8:50 ferry but unfortunately there were already a number of people in line when we came at 7:45. Such a great bakery! Super quaint with awesome baked goods that did not disappoint. The service was great and the only thing that was difficult was deciding which of the amazing tarts, pastries, muffins and cakes to decide on. Everything we got was incredible. We had the most amazing treat after a morning hike. My kids both had tarts. Chocolate for my son and Berry tart for my daughter. They were both absolutely delicious! I had the more savory option with prosciutto, onion, and egg. I also had an oat milk latte while we watched the pastry chefs make more treats. This was a really fun excursion for us and I highly recommend. Don't let the long lines deter you. They were making new things and putting them out as we were there. We got hot sandwiches (mushroom and Swiss, and pastrami) and we got some pastries. The sandwiches were perfect. The pastries were good too. The croissants are thicker than regular ones. But they taste amazing. The orange pastry was my favourite. We got 2 savory croissants for breakfast the next day. This is the only bakery on the island and they are quite popular so be ready for long lines. They are definitely worth the wait bc 1) pastries are delicious 2) one of the only few places open for breakfast / lunch on Mondays. I got the chocolate Cherry cookie and my daughter got the chocolate muffin. They were both insanely good, but so expensive. The staff was super sweet, my child was fully covered in chocolate and they gave me a wet wipe, to go napkins and a box for her muffin right around d closing. Wonderful light lunch at the Brown Bear. We were greeted promptly with the lunch sandwich menu explained to us. We decided to split the Reuben and mixed greens salad. We grabbed a table on the front porch to watch life go by. Our sandwich came within 5 minutes, piping hot and oh so gooey delicious; the bread thick sliced and was the star. The salad tasted like it had just been picked. On our way out we grabbed breakfast for the next day. The apple, gruyere, sage savory scone did not make it home - it was fantastic and very light on the cheese, which was great. Great bakery, my husband was in love with his bear paw, the croissant Pomme was good but not as flaky as I'd hoped. I can't remember what we got the last time, but they have a lot of different options. They have a cool outdoor seating area and small tables too. Prices are up there, but I guess that's island life. Best bakery in town and a must visit if you are at Orcas island. The queue is usually huge, as the food is simply worth it. Bakery items are buttery soft and delicious. Highly recommend! They have outdoor seating as well, but if it's full you can simply walk to the nearest east sound waterfront park and enjoy your meal with a stunning view. read more

Really yummy and worth the wait. We drove straight off the ferry to BBB. Line was to the corner and slow moving. Those in line chatted as we observed folks carrying out large boxes of sweet treats with worried FOMO glances but the kind locals in line assured tourists that they bake and restock all day. We carried out 3 croissants: ham and cheese, feta and spinach, and peach. Also grabbed a bag of the house made granola for $12. All delicious. Glad we caught it on Monday. Brown Bear gets amazing reviews for a reason - it's the best bakery on the island! We were only able to come in once during our trip, but we each got two pastries (one to eat the day of and one to save for breakfast the next day). Some of the best pastries I've ever had. From a delightfully moist currant scone with a sugary, crunchy exterior, to a deeply flavorful blueberry muffin, my family and I loved everything we sampled. The highlight may have been the brioche bread pudding, which was a perfectly sweet custardy blend of fruit and rich brioche. The staff was extremely friendly despite the weekend morning rush. I always make a point of stopping at Brown Bear when I go to Orcas, often even a few times per trip if I have any say in the matter. This time around I got the chocolate muffin (which let's be real, is a delicious, unfrosted cupcake), a stack of sea salt chocolate chip cookies (which were "for later" as in like an hour later), and the cream of asparagus soup, which hit the spot on a crisp day! I miss the hot sandwiches, which I gather are a casualty of staffing problems? But I am also confused because it looked like there were so many people working there? It seems like there has to be a more efficient way to make this place work (maybe have two people taking orders and then different people assembling them? As it is, the order taker is assembling your order, which takes forever and looks incredibly stressful!). The line is very long and moves glacially. Really, much of this is the fault of customers who, despite having waiting on line for like 30 minutes, never seem to have even the vaguest idea of what they want when it's their turn. The space is small but cozy, with lots of outdoor seating. Definitely worth a stop when you're visiting Orcas, but don't show up starving because you're going to be waiting for a while. read more

An absolute must when spending the night or hopping around the San Juan islands. I got myself the freshly baked smoked salmon quiche n it was no joke! Followed that by their fresh n flaky crunch in each bite, marzipan croissant. It complimented beautifully with the macchiato latte but I'd go with a drip next time to avoid the overkill :). Try n go early to get a table by the window (or just anywhere) -the cafe opens early by 8:00 am, bakes fresh goodies through the day n stays pretty busy with holiday makers continuously swarming in n out! Don't come here expecting buttery, flakey croissants :'( They are more bread-y than anything and sooooo expensive. The lavender latte I got was also unsatisfying. It did not taste like lavender at all :( The worst part was the wait though. For such average tasting and expensive things, we waited FOREVERRR. The line is out the door but it honestly feels artificial because once you get inside you can live witness the glacial pace at which this place is run. Kouign Amman!!!! Best ever. Observation: if you don't like them, you've never had them. Advice: order the day ahead, and pay over the phone, and give them your name. The next morning walk to the head of a line, which will no doubt be about a mile long, and retrieve your pastries, while people waiting give you the evil eye thinking you've jumped the line.
