This place is fantastic. The ham and cheese croissant was the perfect breakfast before exploring the island this morning. Their lattes are also quite wonderful. Nowhere to sit inside but there is a great view of the kitchen while ordering where you can see all the fresh goods coming out of the oven and the pounds of fresh butter about to become delicious pastries. As long as it's a nice day there is a lovely garden area with benches and picnic tables to sit as you watch people going about their business in the quaint little town. Highly recommended. read more

On our first visit to Orcas Island, we were in need of a good cup of coffee and found it here. Twice in two days! The staff were incredibly helpful, welcoming and friendly. The baked goods looked amazing and as we are gluten-free, we assumed that there was nothing for us. What a surprise to find that their blueberry muffins are gf! This sweet little cafe is an added jem around Eastsound. I walked into get a coffee and was immediately greeted by friendly, warm smiles. After seeing the fresh quiche on display, I ordered a slice and have to say- Brown Bear Baking has got it down. Nearly $40 for two coffees and pastries? Our pastries weren't even warm. I know being on an island things cost more, but not this much. Service was OK, but it would have been nice to know they are cash only before being rung up. Espresso was good, but not worth the price tag. read more

In my thirty plus years of enjoying Orcas Island, this bakery now ranks as one of the best reasons to visit. We found ourselves timing our morning walks to coincide with their 8:00 opening (though closed on Tuesdays) We also walked longer to burn extra calories, so the Sasquatch cookies combined with the amazing scones, wouldn't add extra pounds! We sampled their quiche, soup, bread, scones, and cookies. They rated 100% on all. Friendly service, clean interior, and nice variety. If you see it and want it, buy it, or it may be gone a few hours later, though they were bringing a new batch of scones out of the oven about 2:00, one afternoon. read more

My brother and I stayed in Eastsound in May 2017 while biking Orcas Island for two days. Best part of each ride - without question - was sitting in the garden by the bakery after the ride, with a great cup of coffee and fresh pastry. They bake throughout the day; service is the best; and the view on Eastsound is excellent. Wish it were closer to my home (Chicago)! read more

I give it a 5 for the food. Husband and I shared a hot pastrami sandwich. Don't remember what sandwich our daughter had, but she said it was delicious. We also got a cinnamon roll and a serving of fruited brioche bread pudding to share. Both excellent! Only thing is on here it lists the menu as being $10 and under. Not so! For the 2 sandwiches and 2 desserts, no drinks, it was $43.73. I feel that was a bit pricey read more

The best thing about Brown Bear Baking to me is to get a coffee and a goodie (there are amazing ones to choose from - sweet or savory!) and watch them baking in the open kitchen. It's kind of magical on rainy days but always great. Staff is friendly and the atmosphere is such that you never want to leave. Amazing smells come out of that kitchen as they are baking and it's fun to watch the process. read more

I love Brown Bear Bakery!! We came here last year when they had just opened....and I could not wait to come back here again. They were our first stop on the island and we have come here 5 days in a row. Scones are out of this world - some of the best I have ever had! Great coffee, and we also like the quiches. Nutella croissants. Yum. Staff is super friendly and helpful. They are a very popular spot so occasionally the wait will be a little long or they won't have what I want (eg, today we wanted one of each of their quiche, but they only had two types left. I snagged a croque monsieur instead.) Tomorrow (Tuesday) they are closed but we shall be back Weds! read more

Simply awesome ! Seating is an issue only because they are so awesome you might have to wait for a seat, but then again they are only about 50 feet from a public beach so order something delicious and take a seat on some driftwood and enjoy the view! Love Orcas Island read more

Fantastic croissants and coffee. After two nights at Rosario, breakfast at brown bear was the best meal we had on the island!

This was one of the best memories of our trip to Orcas....they had raspberry GLUTEN FREE (thank you!!!) muffins which were AMAZING and almond and hemp milk for our hot chocolates and lattes (Yes, we are one of THOSE families with food intolerances). The owner is friendly and inviting. We HAD to go back another day and they had banana walnut gluten free muffins (thank you again!!!) which were also super yummy and a killer smoked salmon and goat cheese quiche (I just did not eat the crust) which was a velvety smooth custard with deep flavor. They smoke the salmon themselves. The baked goods were top notch, the ambiance is warm and the owner is super nice. I am going back next time I visit the island....probably daily. read more

After stopping by the day before for some of the best coffee from Seattle (Victrola's) in which we drooled at the bread pudding but were too full from lunch, we came back the next day. The unfortunate part was that the bread pudding doesn't come out until around 11am, but we had work to do and waited around. The owner was soooo friendly and accommodating. We sat at the bar that faced the open kitchen occasionally hearing the story of how this great bakery came to be. Eventual it was time to taste the goods....so worth the wait! I can't say enough about this gem! I read so many good reviews about Brown Bear Baking that it was on my must hit list. We enjoyed it so much the first time, that we went back again. The pastries are amazing. 27 layers in the croissants? WOW. There were three in our group, so we were able to sample and share a variety... the croissants, scones, sasquatch cookie, and fruit brioche were all superb, I do have to say my two favorites were the smoked salmon quiche with goat cheese, and the croissant with frangipani!
