As an out-of-towner, when you get to NJ/NY area, it is a stated requirement to get a slice of pizza. Several people who live local recommended Brooklyn Square Pizza. It wasn't bad, by any means. It just didn't Wow me at all like I had hoped. I tried a slice of cheese and a slice of their upside down pie. Decent tasting. The best part about it was the counterperson, super friendly and offering me more slices since it was toward the end of the night and the two I had gotten were a bit overheated (though I prefer crispy pizza anyway). Every time we go we get one slice of whatever is behind the glass, it's never a miss and always delicious. that's not the case in any other pizzeria as the pizza is usually sitting and a lot of times they use cheap mozzarella so it taste very plastic as you better ordering a whole pie.. I'm a huge fan of Brooklyn Square Pizza and have frequented the Jackson and Manalapan locations multiple times. I was in the area, so I stopped by the Toms River location. Parking and seating were both plentiful. I usually order pies when I'm at BSP, but this time I chose a few of their slices. The pizza was tasty, but I prefer my own pies since they are piping hot and made to order. If I'm in the area, I would return but my fave location is Jackson since it's the original and it's larger. read more

Finally got here Thursday that just passed, November 12. An acquaintance I know is obsessed with this place and I've heard many other people talk about how good their pizza is. I didn't try their signature square or upside down square whatever it is that everybody loves. I'm testing all pizzerias in the area based on their single slice Neapolitan. They have this signature sesame seed crust which unfortunately I don't think goes with pizza. The slice is a little on the small side. It was three dollars even using cash price even though he gave me the wrong change at first. The establishment seems like a nice place to sit down and eat. They're doing plenty of business. The guy working the phones and the register seemed nice enough. The slice was light on cheese and a little small compared to the competition. I will tell you the sauce flavor is excellent, but I wouldn't give them a better rating than average for that type of pizza. Perhaps someday when I'm invited to someone's house or I have a group of people I'll order their signature Brooklyn Square pizza and we'll see. I know that on the weekends they're extremely busy, so you have to order way ahead and you can do it online. read more

I have been going to Brooklyn pizza since it's early Jackson days and have always loved it today I Ordered from Tom's River and will now not return. I ordered a chef salad on the slice app. Received the salad. Slice app listed turkey ham and cheese over house salad. I received a chef salad with ham turkey provolone roast beef and giardiniera. I called to say I got the wrong item and called it the wrong name. I was first told to call the slice app because that was incorrect to get my money back, then was told they would make me a new one and to come pick I said I would but with traffic it would be another 45 mins to hr so will they replace the whole order, then another man got on the phone asking me questions I tired to explain that yes I may have called it the wrong name but it's still wrong. I could hear a man in the back yelling about how I was incorrect and if I wanted a new salad to come Pick it up. I got frustrated as just hung up. I then called the slice app to get some of my money back and they called the restaurant directly and told them I was wrong! I ripped apart the salad and ate it. This was a $50 order for a large pizza half sausage and an incorrect salad. I want to say this customer service was not up to par in my book and I will not return to Tom's river location. I don't think the Jackson location would ever treat anyone that way! read more

The Toms River location is a lot smaller than the Jackson location. This one is also located in a small shopping strip with ample parking. Make sure to order at the counter and grab your drink. The first time I have had their food. We have normally just ordered pizza. The food is a 2. I got chicken parm- chicken was various thick tenders and breasts- angel hair( seemed to be cut up or broken). The sauce was as if poured from a can of crushed tomatoes with no seasoning at all. The bread was supposed to be Italian bread but the texture and crust was not at all authentic. I guess next time we will have to stick to pizza. There was no effort in the meal I got. To improve this: use chicken breasts, use a meat Malloy to flatten it. Then prepare it. Make tomato sauce and have it cook for a few hours. Use seasoning, garlic, onion, etc to have some flavor. Get better bread from someplace else. Don't cut up and overcook the angel hair. read more

Just had pizza and fried zucchini sticks. Eggplant Ricotta was very good. Would have it again but probably will try some of the other offerings next time. It is a busy pizzeria, we are in with table service that was very good. It is noisy, and the doors do not have a vestibule to protect you from the cold air coming in with the customers. So unfortunate, I really liked this place, I had ordered many times in the past, but I won't ever again after tonight. I tried to order by phone, but for the first time, it was difficult, the guy didn't seem to understand me too well, talked over me too much to even hear me. I had to repeat my address and order multiple times (one large pie, half cheese/half pepperoni, I don't live far, it's not hard.) When I gave him my order, he complained he had a line of people and I was wasting his time with my small order. I have a houseguest visiting from out of state, was hoping to show him how good the pizza is here in NJ, but no one wanted to eat anything from this restaurant after overhearing how I was treated on the phone. I ended the call by telling the guy we didn't want them making our food, and I thought that was clear. They made it anyway, and delivered it. My brother paid for it (he said he didn't want more trouble, plus it was bad weather, not the fault of the delivery person), but we're all too freaked out to eat it, considering the way the phone order went. I recently stopped by this pizza place while in the Tom's River area. Was in the mood for a Sicilian slice and saw good reviews on this place. I ordered 2 Upside Down Square slices and 1 Buffalo Chicken slice. The square slices are definitely the way to go. They were delicious. The sauce, cheese, and crust all tasted great. Friday night is generally pizza night for our family. We love trying different places and this is one of our favorites in the area. We love their square grandma pie and regular cheese pie (which includes sesame crust). They have an extensive menu too. Someday we'll try something new but for now the pie is our go-to. If I could give the Italian food here ten stars I would. Most reviews focus on the pizza, yet the Italian food is underrated and in my opinion even better than the Upside Down square pie. Why ten stars? I've given many local pizzerias perfect reviews of five stars, yet the food here is decidedly restaurant-quality and at least twice as good. It's consistent perfection that tops my previous favorites. Chicken Parmigiana - a large portion of around five pieces of chicken makes this an incredible value, with spaghetti that's among the best I've had -- all of the pasta is al dente, every time. Chicken Grippo - the best chicken parmigiana in vodka sauce I've had anywhere, served over an incredible penne vodka. Their pasta is a high-quality product that's likely imported from Italy. Chicken Saltimbocca - apologies to Nino's, but this is the greatest Chicken Saltimbocca I've had anywhere. The chefs here are incredibly talented. Chicken Murphy - the best portion of the most tender chicken, served with a deliciously generous quality assortment of potatoes, peppers and sausage. I thought I've liked this at other pizzerias, whereas I love it here. Baked Ziti Sicilian - I found a few years ago that eggplant goes incredibly well with baked ziti, and this comes baked out of the oven and piping hot also topping my previous favorite place to order this dish. Apparently I need to broaden my horizons further since I usually stick to these top five dishes, and what's amazing to me is that I haven't had a bad meal here. I've also had salads and shrimp dishes that have been great. The consistency and generosity of the portions is astounding. The only drawback is that the Italian bread could be fresh out of the oven as I believe they mentioned they get it shipped from a bakery, but it still works to sop up any of the wonderful sauces. It's funny because the pizza to me here is an afterthought because of how amazing the entrees are. I do also enjoy the pizza, which is rated by many as among the best in the state, although I love ordering from here for the Italian food specifically. read more

Was in NJ visiting family, and my brother-in-law picked up some pizza from Brooklyn Square. Over the few days I was there we had it several more times, both fresh and reheated (it freezes great.) I found this thicker pizza to be a pretty good Sicilian, but when compared to the standard thin pie it's just too much dough for me, personally. But oh those thin pies... Holy crap this is good pizza. Every element adds to the experience. Chewy base crust texture. Crispy edge crust. Rich and flavorful sauce. Melted mozzarella blend that has great salty sweetness and that wonderful stretch. I think we had the Peter's Special and the Honeymoon, but I never saw a menu and just ate what was served to me.
