Black Forest - Sausage Basket; bratwurst with sauerkraut, mustard and French fries

We came into Black Forest on a Tuesday evening for Trivia. Black Forest on Smith Street is a very cute German bier garden. It has the rustic vibe and community atmosphere down pat to keep it feeling like a neighborhood watering hole with traditional German fare. We ordered our German pilsners (which tend to have a maltier taste) and I also had the Grapefruit beer which was a little too sweet instead of tangy/sour for what I was expecting though I still enjoyed it. We came hungry so ordered the pork tenderloin schnitzel with spicy kale and potato salad, a pretzel, and a couple brat wurst with fries. The bratwurst were personally my favorite, and I loved the German mustard they came with. The portions were well sized and the sausage meats were juicy. The pork tenderloin schnitzel was good, but nothing for me to immediately write home about. I enjoyed the spicy kale and pickled potato salad maybe more than the schnitzel itself, though next time would come in just for the brat and the beer alone. This is a great neighborhood spot I hope to return to soon. Oh and we got 6th place in trivia! (Not much thanks to me on that one...)

Really solid neighborhood joint. I first heard of this place featured from an episode on Eater with…read moreGeorge Motz saying he loved coming here, funny enough the day I went, which was 1/24/26, George was eating dinner at the bar. It's a cute place, nothing fancy but a place you really can come hang out any day of the week. If I lived in the area I could see my myself ending up here any day of the week. I guess that's why when I went with fellow Yelper Sara L she said she has gone many times and wanted to take me since she knew I would enjoy it. The food: Gebackene Champignons- Fried Mushrooms- OK to preface they are kinda plain and boring the first few pieces. But the more I ate it the more I was like wow, these are actually good and kinda addictive. I enjoyed these and I enjoyed they gave a nice big portion. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=Y_iTTjKvV5hLy-880SZzlA&select=wXMnSOv4x6gNG-gHh3t40Q Potato Latkes- These were on the specials page and they were good, nice crunchy and fried well but these were mixed with something since the taste was a bit different and the color wasn't that nice golden brown color you associate with latkes. Goulash- This was a dish George had and honestly, they were amazing. Highly recommend. I thought the flavor but more importantly the texture was amazing. A lot of times when you have slow cooked beef, they could sometimes get stringy and chewy, no not here. Also the spätzle was a really great pairing. Mussels- These were some fat ass mussels. The flavor of them was good, the night I went they were spicyyyyyyy. This was a well made dish and i appreciate their creativeity but I do prefer a simple garlic shallot butter and white wine where I want to drink the broth afterwards. The broth on this was too spicy too drink. Roasted Boneless Pork Chop- Pork chops are always a gamble and the one here was just OK. The sauce it came in was nice, kind on the heavy side but a delcious cream sauce. The pork was cut super thin and unfortunely they came out dry and chewy. The fries were a nice shoestring fry which were nice and crunchy. https://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?userid=Y_iTTjKvV5hLy-880SZzlA&select=14_-Katrn9Glu-wA65-CHg

You know... I'd never thought that there would be a day where I love a turkey sandwich this much…read more The clean turkey really is so delicious. The combination of the sweet pickles, white onions, and arugula is a match made in heaven for the turkey breast. I usually am not a fan of arugula bc i find the taste to be too much but the flavor is very subtle in the sandwich. The red wine vinegar isn't overpowering if you thought that was off putting and they put the perfect amount of mayo. I had this sandwich 4 days ago... and I am still thinking about it :( The ultimate warrior on the other hand, is complete opposite of the clean turkey. With the decadent pork shoulder and cheese, it's a warm and toasty and melty sandwich. Really love the addition of mama's lil's peppers I really like the sesame bread. Makes the world of a difference!! The strawberry orange juice wasn't a hit for me. Barely tasted the strawberry I can't wait to come back and try the other sandwiches!!!

My main gripe is just the value of the sandwiches here. Pricing is very steep with most sandwiches being around $17. With this much money you would expect a lot of food, but they are very stingy with the meat. I ordered the droopy and, as you can see in my picture, you only get 4 slices of roast beef. For this price, that should be double! If you charge me a lot I will expect a lot!

I stopped by Brooklyn Burgers & Beer during a work trip to quell a burger craving. Menu looked…read morepromising but unfortunately it just didn't quite hit the mark for me. Let's start with the good - the service and ambiance were on point. I went on a Sunday evening around 7pm. It was busy inside, but since I was a solo diner I was seated immediately by the bar. The servers were friendly and attentive. Probably 3-4 different people checked in multiple times throughout the meal. Where I struggle is with the actual burger itself. As a non-resident New Yorker, for me $22.50 is a lot to spend on a burger and fries. It needs to rock my world at that price point. And it just didn't. I got the B&B Burger. The onion ring tasted like it had been refried a second time to make my burger. The bread was crumbly like it was on the verge of going stale. The actual beef patty itself was decent - good flavor. Usually I can overlook an okay burger if the fries are top notch, but these fries were under-seasoned and also 'just okay'. I also got a side of Chicken Tenders. These were good - no complaints here. I really wanted to like this spot, but not sure this would be a return visit for me.

My friend was as turned off as me due to what happened (read my previous review) and he headed for the proverbial "Hills". This left me solo and hungry. I started walking northwest knowing I'd find something pretty good. Low and behold Brooklyn Burger and Beer looked like just what I wanted, so I walked in, grabbed a stool at the bar and jumped into their menu. What a difference a 1/2 mile makes! This place was perfect and its menu was choke full of bargains and bonuses. This place was cute; I mean the bar was front and center and was very impressive but the table seating was charming too. Their lunch menu has a great "build your on burger" which i had a blast doing: Burger Cheddar Cheese Bacon Grilled onions Lettuce Tomato Mayo / BBQ con The service was exceptional, the ambience was very "Taverny [sic]" and my lunch was delicious!

This place is definitely one of my go-tos for cheese if I'm in the area - and they will let you taste/sample cheeses that you're curious about. They also often have samples of one or cheeses, as well as samples of other foods, on a display table near where you enter the store. There's also a good selection of crackers, Jams and preserves, beer,non-alcholic beverages. They sell breads from She Wolf Bakery and they often have cookies from The Good Batch.
