Staff was friendly and we were server pretty quickly. The Pan Fried Pork Buns were extremely filling as they were huge and had a lot of soup in them. My biggest regret was getting the Shrimp XLB as I might as well should've ordered regular instead. Reason being the shrimp had no taste and were just kind of there. Tucked away in a tiny plaza I almost missed it. No sign or large awning that said mom Dumpling to make them stand out. Luckily my friend wanted to eat here or I would've never knew they existed. The dumplings here were very good and the space is fairly large. I doubt many people know this place is here cause there weren't that many guest during our visit. Hope they do well here. read more

The consistency here is really notable, it's not often that I can't point out a single dish that was lacking. - XLBs are stuffed full of soup (see pics). I think they are the hardest XLB I've ever tried to pick up with chopsticks because of that, but they taste so def worth Value: 4/5 - This restaurant targets the upper middle tier of price points. Nowhere near a McDonalds but also far from a fancy restaurant. My wife and I spent ~$70 between the two of us (tip & tax included) and had some leftovers to take home. Price is reasonable for the quality of the food, but made more worth it because of the low wait (I feel like this place is still undiscovered). Comparable to Dumpling Home in SF but no wait. A nice local dumpling spot, in a plaza amidst the apartments of SF State! Parking: There's some parking in the plaza lot, as well as residential parking along the streets. Came on a weekday for lunch, so no issues. Food: -Pork XLB ($10.98 for 6pc): Very soupy but with a thin wrapper that still held together. Pretty dang good for a mom and pop restaurant! -Pan Fried Pork Baos ($12.98 for 6pc): Would get again. Similar soup-iness to a Pork XLB but in bao format. They let us know they overcrisped the first batch but were gracious enough to remake another batch with no extra charge. We tried both batches, and honestly both were good. 2nd one (how it was intended to cook)--golden and crispy on the bottom outside, but slightly soft and fluffy on the inside from all that warm soup! ***Note that this dish does take longer for cooking, for those in a rush. -Chicken Fried Rice ($12.98): Really enjoyed, especially if you want to add a carb dish. I good amount of chicken, and rice was super aromatic with egg. Definitely enough wok-hay. Should have asked for bowls because both me and my bf are super messy with rice on a small plate lol. -Mongolian Beef with Garlic Sauce ($16.98): My bf liked it most. Generous pieces of fried sliced beef that soaked up a sweet and sour, mildly spicy sauce. Sauteed onions were really good tossed in. The Special House Pan-Fried Pork Bao and the Napa Cabbage with Pork did not taste the same. It was less flavorful and they seemed to have skimped on ingredients. Who would have thought this homey dumpling restaurant would be tucked away and hidden within the grounds of SFSU/Park Merced?? What a great find in my opinion! We came in a little after the lunch rush around 2 PM, were warmly greeted by the staff and quickly sat. As you walk in, you can also see a big glass window where the staff fills and makes fresh dumplings. We were super hungry and quickly ordered our food. The staff made sure our table had everything we needed and even provided us sauce trays with vinegar and ginger. Shortly after, our food came out promptly one after the other. **What we ordered** - House Special XLB (soup dumplings) - These classic XLBs were delicious! The dumpling skin was perfectly thin, the broth was so flavorful with a soft and supple pork filling. The addition of the vinegar and ginger really elevates every bite you take. - Sheng Jian Bao (panfried pork bao) - This is a must order, I mean look at the perfect golden bottoms! You've been warned, but these baos come out piping HOT! The different textures from the crisp bottom of the bao, the smooth and comforting broth and juicy pork filling is pure happiness for me. I LOVE adding some of their house chili oil into these bad boys! - Dry Cooked Green Beans - We needed some greens in our diet, but these were so yummy and had just the right amount of "wok hay" for that flavaa. - Shrimp, Pork and Chive Dumplings - Another classic dumpling! The combined flavors of the shrimp, pork and chives really come through and worked together so well. They had just the right amount of skin to filling ratio. Overall, the service was great! All their XLBs are very soupy, flavorful, and the dough is thin but sturdy. Kind of the perfect xlb. You have to try their numb & spicy one! We also tried their beef brisket noodle soup, cucumbers, and pig ears, and fried tofu. All of these were pretty standard! XLB = 5 stars! Ordered via phone for takeout (FYI, Doordash is a few $ more per dish even for takeout). Dry fried green beans ($13), Xiao long bao (6/$11), beef rolls ($11). Those XLB were fantastic! SUPER soupy inside, skins were thin but never broke, top was small and not hard at all. Very impressed. Green beans were standard, would have liked there to be some jalapeños or red pepper for heat to kick up the dish. It was simply stir-fried with garlic, and not flash-fried to "dry" because it was more on the oily side. Beef rolls were disappointing. Beef itself was good and not as fatty as other places, though was more thickly sliced. The disappointing thing was that the filling consisted solely of beef, hoisin, tiny bit of cilantro (it wasn't even in the half of a roll that I ate), and LETTUCE inside. That was my first beef roll with lettuce--where's the cucumber and herby chimichurri-esque sauce? The green onion pancake was quite thick and chewy, no flakiness; I didn't mind this, as I'm a fan of most green onion pancakes, though flakiness would definitely elevate the roll. Came to Mom Dumpling with friends and it was pretty good! I would say their direct comparison is with Dumpling Home in Hayes Valley. It's a slightly more upscale presentation but not quite as pretentious as Din Tai Fung or Dough Zone. We ordered many classics and everything was pretty good. My favorite were the dry fried string beans which were sufficiently garlicky as well as the traditional XLB which was impossibly thin on the wrapper but also super juicy within. It was a bit of a letdown that there was no ginger accompanying the dumplings (there was vinegar in a pour jar on the side though). I was pleasantly surprised by some of our starters. In particular the chili oil spiced pig stomach was a winner. The texture was really nice compared to the pig ears which were a little hard to chew given how thick they were cut. I also enjoyed the sweet potato pancake more than the green scallion pancake this time. It was a little less oily and more flakey. The sweetness from the sweet potato was also very pleasant. For noodles, we shared the mala beef dry noodles which yielded the requisite tingles and made the dish fun. 8 of us were able to eat our fill for about $24 each with tip. Not too bad! The meat was not cooked properly inside one of my dumplings. The meat was raw and I could have gotten sick. I also saw some questionable hygiene practices while I was eating. For example a man preparing meat wearing gloves was touching other things not sanitary then returning to prepare meat. I didn't feel comfortable eating anything after the improperly cooked meat and unsanitary food handling. The service was very good though, but they need to work on food safety and hygiene. read more

It's hard to give Mom Dumpling only 3 stars because their food actually tastes pretty good but the portions are really small and the prices are a little high for the amount of food you get. I guess because they're located in a little tucked away neighborhood, this is really for the convenience of residence living around Park Merced. I made a reservation based upon another reviewers but there really is no need. You will probably be waiting for service though as there's only 1 girl who can take your order apparently and none of the other guys can do anything except clear your tables. We were so delighted when this little hidden gem opened in the SF State area. We've been here many times before I decided I should write a review. We've had many dishes from here, ranging from their dumplings, noodles, and appetizers. Their dumplings are definitely to die for, great texture and flavorful filling. Their Dan Dan noodles were one of the best I have ever had because the noodles were cooked to perfection, the sauce were just the right amount of spice and savoriness. Now moving on to the items from the photos. Crab & Pork XLB - I don't think words can describe how good this is. I've had this XLB from popular places like DTF, and the one from Mom's dumpling are way better. I even took a phot of the fillings. The XLB are topped with some crab meat. When you bite into the XLB, there is an explosion of pork and crab juice slapping your palette. The wrap is the right thickness where the XLB won't break just by simply picking it up. I can probably eat 2-3 order of these by myself and will want more. Salt and Pepper Wings - okay, honestly, we were hesitant on ordering this, because salt pepper wings at a dumpling place can't be good right? Well we were wrong. The wings were crunchy on the outside, flavorful and juicy on the inside. The chili they use were different from other places, but it was just as good. Pork Wonton Soup - the soup was very umami; perfect when it is extremely cold outside. The wonton filling had that meat bouncy texture, which is the best texture for a wonton. Cucumber with Garlic Sauce - this is one of my favorite appetizers here. I am not sure if they marinate their cucumber in this garlic sauce because it is so flavorful. Heads up, your breath will stick for a while after eating this, but worth it! This place restaurant is very clean and quiet, and very friendly staffs. Lately I've been hitting places I've bookmarked to try. Yesterday hubby & I ate here. We sat down around 11:40am. They opened at 11am. We were given a two sided laminated menu. Then we waited and waited. The primary reason - only one person in the dining room who wore multiple hats. Order taker, bus boy, runner, cashier, bagger of take out orders. He must have a system. He came over with his smart tablet and keyed in our items. Then he went over to another table and did the same. After that he delivered baskets and dishes to earlier diners. And then he either bagged to go orders or handed out to go orders. These were only a few tasks performed as we're waiting. Our food - delicious once it came item by item. Our first item delivered was the pan fried pork baos. He forewarned us that it'll be hot. Our first bite - hot!! Oozed broth. Yum yum. Other items - * shrimp and pork with chives steamed dumplings * pork XLB * deep fried sesame dumplings Everything was delicious. Great meat seasonings. Hot. You really didn't need to enhance it with vinegar, soy or chili that was on each table. 4 stars for the food. Would have been 5 stars if it weren't for the slow service. read more

This place is gonna piss alot of people off if they do online orders! I placed an order for pick up via their online website. When I went to pick up, guess what the first thing I see on their front door "10% OFF YOUR FIRST ONLINE ORDER". It was NOT advertised on their website or at check out at ALL! I paid full price for my dishes. Anyways, I was NOT acknowledged when I walked in. Several people in the kitchen probably saw me, the kitchen was separated with a large glass from the dining room. Servers were serving the indoor dine in customers. I waited until someone from the kitchen came out with 2 orders, one of them being mine. I asked him can I get a price adjustment for the 10% discount for my first online order and he said "I can not do it since you paid online already." I told him I didn't see that advertised on the website. He told me "He did not know". Ok then! I ordered a variety of items including their "famous" Xiao long bao, chicken dumpling, shrimp chow mein, chicken fried rice, dry string beans, and crispy sesame balls. The Xiao Long bao was the biggest let down. The soup inside was sour. Meat quality was so so. The chicken dumpling however was good. Chow mein had tiny little shrimps and very oily. Fried rice was not bad. Sesame balls were small and oily. It was a mix bag. Half the dishes were good and half was not. I guess you can judge for yourself. From what I seen for the 10%. You are supposed to scan a QR code on their door to get the 10%. Seems like they're offering that to customers who have already been there to attract them to order online versus someone like me trying them for their first time..no discount. I would like to start out by saying that my shrimp chow mein and chicken dumplings were OK. I'm here about my pork dumplings. I bit into it and IMMEDIATELY spit out. It had a sour and rotten taste and aroma. I asked my husband just to smell it and he was repulsed and asked what's wrong with it. The meat inside was gray and the odor was so strong and pungent. I'm glad I followed my instincts and spit it out instead of trying to keep eating it. Food poising is real and I wasn't about to risk my health! Although the taste of the other two dishes were ok my stomach is turning as we speak. (Update for this review 30 minutes later.) I indeed threw up. read more

This place has been on my to-visit list, and I'm glad that I was finally able to try it out! The restaurant sits in a little shopping center behind parkmerced apartment building. Parking is abundant on a weekday. We came around noon and we were the only ones there. Service was fine. They make those dumplings right in front of you which is cool. Since we were sort of in a rush, we tried their pan fried pork bun and scallion pancake. Food came out relatively quick. Scallion pancake came out first, and it looked pretty good. It's got layers, and fluffy in the middle. You can tell it's homemade. Although I do wish they were crispier, some pieces were not up to my standards of crispness lol Now, you have to try their pan fried pork bun!!! It's so far the best I've had in the Bay Area. I've been trying to find the best juicy bun place in the Bay Area and have tried at least 5 places that specialize in them. I can say that Mom Dumpling has the best so far. However, the plaza became semi-famous 7 years ago when Park 77/The Lister was featured on Bar Rescue...for their infamous couch. That "Casting Couch" is probably THE most action this plaza has ever gotten! Anyhow, the bar has since closed and the plaza is back to being the little known plaza. Hopefully, with the arrival of Mom Dumpling, it will change that. Because dumplings.... Specifically XLB and SJB...people go cray over these squirting dumplings. Opening this week is Mom Dumpling at the former Fang Yuan Kitchen. This is their second Bay Area location (original is in Pleasanton). They're open for takeout, delivery (American + Chinese 3rd party delivery apps), indoor dining, and limited outdoor dining. I messaged them on yelp about outdoor seating and when I arrived, there were no tables outside. When I inquired inside, they kindly brought a table outside for us so it seems outdoor seating is available upon request. For their grand opening, it's 10% off for online takeout orders (via their website). With the mandate lifted, staff didn't wear masks. First dish arrived in less 5 minutes with subsequent dishes arriving every 5 minutes. Arrived around 3:30 PM to an empty restaurant and it seemed the staff was resting since it was off-peak hours (sorry! I know I eat at weird times). A M B I A N C E Casual with same décor and ambiance as the previous restaurant. There's about 10 tables inside with an open kitchen and dumpling making station so you can oversee the action. This place used to be Fanyuan Kitchen, which was one of my favorite Chinese restaurants in SF. I came here today and saw it is Mom dumplings. I came in, people here are very obliging and welcoming. I got pan fried bao, bowl bowl chicken, hot and sour soup, and beef noddles. I liked all of them. The pan fired bao is one the best in the city, it is very juicy inside and crunchy outside, the bowl bowl chicken is just tasty. Beef noodles are my favorite. The soup is so right on point. Even though it was spicy, I wanted to drink it all. For the bathroom. It is not clean. I took a photo of the molded celling and it didn't smell too good. Came in today after work for a quick bite with a friend. I've been here many times. And love every time of it. However, this time was .. off. Sizzling beef & string beans was extra salty. Fried house pork bao didn't have much flavor. Thin sliced pig ears was kind of hard to chew. Service is still amazing. Very polite, attentive, fast service and food came fast. Their uncle (I assume) was wrapping dumplings at the back table, but he got up and left many times and left the HUGE BOWL OF STUFFING UNATTENDED! Even tho the weather is cold and chill, the outer layer of the stuffing was changing colors. And yes, they steam the dumplings in over 200 degree and yes it will kill all the bacteria and flies stuck in there, but looking at a hygiene pov, please don't leave it out on the table all to the open view. read more

Came here for the second time on a Saturday during lunchtime, the restaurant was busy with diners. Fortunately there was still a table available so was seated right away. This has become one of my favorite dumpling places to go when I'm in the city. Food: House Special Pork Xiao Long Bao: Steamed perfectly with delicious pork and soup filling inside, this is really their signature dish. Shrimp Pork and Chives Pot Stickers: Pan-fried to perfection, so tasty with plenty of filling inside. Shrimp Pork and Chives Dumpling: Steamed with same filling as potstickers but I prefered the pan-fried pot stickers style. Thinly Sliced Pig ear w/Spicy Sauce Nice large plate of pig ear with slightly crunchy to soft texture with light spice was also very unique and flavorful. I loved the Pork Xiao Long Bao (XLB) or soup dumplings. Juicy, and the wrapper isn't too thick. It was my first time ever trying Pan Fried Pork Bao or Shen Jian Bao (SJB) at any restaurant. Fun to admire, but not for me because they aren't the easiest to dip into sauce or pop into your mouth. They're crunchy. Reasonable price for a large bowl of Hot and Sour Soup. Fun menu, one that I dream of. Owners are super sweet. They can speak Cantonese and Mandarin and are from Shandong if I remembered everything correctly. My friend spoke Mandarin with the owner's son who served us. He told us that Mom Dumpling opened Mother's Day 2022! Not on Friday, not on Saturday, but truly on Sunday, Mother's Day. So adorable!!! He was actively taking feedback on how to improve our dining experience (FYI: There's a typo with Appetizer 48, which is missing the English noun...maybe pork belly?). Restaurant is near San Francisco State University (SFSU). Plenty of indoor seating. Parking lot lines are a bit unclear, and I suspect it might be difficult to park in the lot when the shopping plaza is crowded, but there is street parking. read more

One of the best XLB I've tasted. Better than Shanghai Dumpling in Millbrae and close to Ding Tain Fung Tapei, IMO. XLB - Skin is so thin. Meat is not too porky. Filled with soup. Vinegar dipping sauce is not overwhelming. The thinly sliced ginger is another sign of authenticity. read more

Everything here was realllyyy good, the dumplings are all fresh and made right in front of you. I forgot to take a pic of them but I swear their good lol. Very comparable to dumpling home, they also have the pork bun soup dumplings and they taste equally as good to me. The dough might be slightly thicker. We ordered to-go and thought the food was really good!! Ordered the shengjianbao, beef noodle soup, green beans, and pig ear. The baos were nice and soupy and the flavor of the broth in the noodle soup was spot on. Green beans had a great garlic flavor. Located in a quiet area with plenty of parking around.
