It has become our go-to spot for celebrating birthdays, anniversaries, and other special occasions. I had the opportunity to meet the owner during a business interview (while c-19) and was genuinely excited to meet the person behind such a successful restaurant. I've eaten this sandwich at over 100 places including the originator, Philippe in LA, and this was the best I've ever had... 10 out of 10!! We usually pick a seafood spot, and this time I was working in La Mesa so Brigantine seemed to be a good choice. I had been to Brigantine before, but many years ago. When I parked in the busy, but large parking lot, I noticed the small pond outside, and the old school feel of the restaurant. The old school feel continued as we walked in. The restaurant was large, with a small bar in the corner, which was packed on a Friday afternoon. There is fishing memorabilia everywhere. We were seated in a large, comfortable booth and greeted readily by our server. I first noticed that the small plate in front of me was dirty. So I sent it back. I understand that can happen so it didn't seem like a big deal until my cousin started drinking his beer and noticed that his glass was broken. It seems like this place could be a bit more careful about the dishes they use. Anyway, my cousin's favorite seafood pasta was no longer on the menu, but our server inquired and they were able to make it for him. I thought it was great that they could do that. We shared the calamari starter and I had the wok-seared ahi. I will say that everything was good, but not memorable. There was nothing that I ate that I would specifically return for. Our server was very good. He checked on us several times and my water and iced tea were refilled regularly. All in all, I think it is a cool-looking older restaurant with some retro appeal. I love the brussels sprouts, I love the halibut and the clam chowder is pretty good. This time I decided to go on taco Tuesday and trailer tacos four dollars for a fish taco seems pretty amazing. I also decided to try the Carne Asada taco they call it marinated skirt steak taco. The fish one was nothing special. I would definitely not come here for just fish tacos, but the Carne Asada was so flavorful and really tasty with the avocado salsa. I would come back for that. Came here on a Saturday afternoon as we were in the area and it was close. I have only ever been to the Del Mar location. The patio looked busy as we were walking in but we were promptly greeted and seated. Server came by to get drinks but we had been chatting and were not ready. Got drinks ordered and needed more time for food order. Kidlet was not happy about the food choices and had lots of questions. Ended up with: Fish taco plate ($18.50) for me, kids fried chicken ($10) for kidlet and fish and chips ($25) for husband. I swapped out the cole slaw and kettle chips for fries on my order and there was no up charge. I had a glass of Seaglass Riesling ($10) my husband had the Bourbon Peach smash ($14) I can't remember what the bourbon was in it but my husband requested Basil Hayden's and it was a $3 upcharge. Fish tacos: the fish was hot but the cheese was not melted. It was a lot of cabbage in there, most ended up on the plate. Fries were hot but super salty. Husband's fish was hot and flaky. He said his fries had no salt. Kidlet's chicken was nasty. Husband and I each had a bite and were surprised that kidlet ate any. It tasted like freezer burnt chicken that was cooked. It was super hard and super rubbery. Kidlet had fruit as a side and gobbled it up. As a consolation let kidlet get a kids sundae which was just ice cream with hot fudge. It comes with whip and a cherry but kidlet is not a fan of those (neither am I). Service was very slow considering it was not super busy inside. Our waters got empty (all 3 of them) before we got more and while I wanted to check out the dessert menu (there was something that looked like the hula pie from Duke's we saw go by) everyone else was over it. I tried to look at the dessert menu online but they do not have it (or drinks menu) online. Overall it was a meh meal for $82.50 + $7.01 tax for a total of $89.51. It was a mediocre meal for the price. I did like the decor of this location (it looks like there is the hull of a ship inside) but the views at the Del Mar one are better. I don't foresee myself stopping by here again, as it is pretty far from where we live and we don't get to this part of town. read more

We have been dining at the La Mesa Brigantine for many years and can say unequivocally that their food and service is consistently great! We easily made reservations thru their website and were celebrating our 30th anniversary. We were seated a nice window seat booth as requested thru the online reservations. Our meal started with a fresh yummy basket of bread and butter. We ordered one of my favorite starters of Crispy Brussels Sprouts with chorizo and blue cheese... a great way to start off your palate. Hubby ordered his favorite the Macadamia crusted Mahi Mahi and I ordered my favorite the stuffed Sea Bass (it is usually ordered off the "special" menu), both cooked to perfection and topped with wonderful sauces - delicious! We ended our meal with a warm peach cobbler which they topped with vanilla ice cream and salted caramel drizzle - need I say more? As you can see all portions are quite large and oh so tasty!
