    SURF & TURF

Came back to City Tacos after previously leaving a 2 star review, mainly because my son really wanted to give it another shot. I'm glad we did. The person who took our order was friendly, the place was clean, and I appreciated that the menu clearly listed everything included in each taco. I ordered the surf and turf and the birria taco. Both were tasty, but the birria stood out for me. It had a really nice kick and ended up being my favorite. That one alone would bring me back. The only downside for me is that they still only offer canned and bottled drinks. Not a dealbreaker, but something I'd love to see improved. Overall, definitely a better experience this time around and I'm glad I gave it another try.

City Tacos is definitely a spot worth checking out. They offer a wide selection of tacos, which makes it easy to try something new each visit. My personal favorites were the surf and turf, Mexicali, and the pescado. The SDCA taco was ok for me, I'm not really a fan of beans in my tacos. Overall a solid place with something for everyone, especially if you like experimenting with different taco combinations. And check out their sauce bar!

City Tacos brought out a super unique January 2026 taco of the month - the TETELA. AMBIANCE DJ was playing jams that got people moving and grooving! Loved the energy tonight - Viva La Mesa! I already knew I loved City Tacos, but the La Mesa location far surpasses the other two I've been to. I used to live in North Park and that location was my go-to. Having visited La Mesa, I'm never bothering with Nort Park parking again. Our tacos came out super quick and were SO fresh. The salsa bar is great. There's tons of seating. I have legitimately zero complaints. This will absolutely be a recurring visit now that I live in Lemon Grove. The Camaron Enchilado is my #1 favorite taco in San Diego. I also tried the Friars Fish on this trip and will get that every time going forward.

My friends said I had to try City Tacos and mannnn I'm glad I did! The tacos down to the tortilla were all so delicious. Even the tortilla is tasty! I love that they have a salsa bar and self serve water. It keeps me from bothering the staff. The staff did all work hard and even cleaned up our trash. My least favorite taco was the birria since it was a little fattier than I was used to. The creamy green sauce was a favorite of mine and I enjoyed the cilantro. The bathroom could have used a deep clean- it was like a bar bathroom. 'nuff said.

Went here on Friday 3/6 Was really craving some tacos and a place with only tacos on the menu I thought ya know had to be good. Unfortunately that was not the case, I got birria, carne asada, and fried fish. I will say the fish taco was definitely the best, good sauce and good fish. The birria was flavorless and I find it weird no consome which makes the birria taco. The carne asada was super cold when I got it, which a huge scoop and a very bland guacamole. They do have a cute little patio in the back and salsa bar. The salsa was okay. The staff was nice and it was pretty busy so I may could have just ordered the wrong thing. Non the less I unfortunately will not be returning to try anything else.

Love coming to City Tacos--especially on Fridays when the farmers market is open or on Taco Tuesday. The tacos are always good, consistent, and full of flavor, and the salsa bar never disappoints. It's hands down my favorite taco spot in East County so far. Always a solid choice when I'm craving tacos!

We come here almost every time we visit SD. Quick easy satisfying, with plenty of unique flavors and good standbys. I'm losing track of what my favorite orders are but from this visit: Carnitas - already so good but with the chicharrones on top?? Girl. Shank - a lil wet but the corn tortilla can take it. Surf n turf - got an extra thick corn tortilla with this one I didn't like, and the shrimp was mushy. With the asadero cheese and aioli this is a really heavy taco. Salmon caribe - I liked this but my partner didn't. Maybe the flour tortilla? Cocito californiano - would not get again, it was really wet and too murky of flavors. I think the guac and pico and aioli was too much. May be good without aioli. Tbh I didn't even know arugula and black beans were in there - they kinda just got drowned the in sauce. I swear we got lettuce instead of arugula. Recall from prior visits: Scallop dreams too saucy Sonoran fish tacos solid Hearing family rave about the Cameron enchilado, crunch time shrimp, papa con rajas, and elote. If you order online $20+ you get free chips and guac or churros!

Yum....yum...yum.....This place was so yummy! We ordered a few different tacos as I wasn't sure what to expect when it came to the taste, texture and overall flavor of the tacos. I was pleasantly surprised with how good the tacos are. Some of them needed some extra lime and salsa but overall they were really good. The place was clean and was really busy. I didn't realize from the front looking in how much space they actually had toward the back and outside. Definitely looking forward to the next time we try this place.

Taco of the month, and a POLLO CITY
    Michaela I.

Taco of the month was a giant rolled potato taco, they weren't kidding with giant. I love their papas con rajas so this was a treat. Crunchy fried corn rolled taco and smooth creamy potato inside. Also got the pollo city which was good, light, sweeter than I thought it would be. Finally, we shared the frijoles charros which I always enjoy. The meat flavors all complement each other very well. We went on a Sunday afternoon and it wasn't crowded, service was quick, we were in and out.

Service was great! She helped me pick out the Maui taco and it was the absolute best! Moist, mixed with so many flavors that blended perfectly! I want to try everything else on their menu. They have a spacious interior and back patio. There is also a front area with a few bar stools. Music selection was superb.

Today I chose off the vegetarian menu... and oh my did it out do the other tacos I got.. I order the city zucchini.... Soooo good!! So much flavor!! It's a must try!! Always live the vibe of the La Mesa outdoor patio also. Order something you've never tried!! It might become your favorite!

The woman at the register was very nice and the cook seemed to carry a great attitude as well. I noticed many customer coming were returning customers which is something I always like to see. California burrito was packed with meat and cooked to absolute perfection. I could actually taste the carne asada over everything which is honesty rare for me. The guacamole was not oozing out nor was it overpowering the taste of the whole burrito. The size of this thing was as about the size of my forearm! Filled me up for sure!! 6 rolled tacos with guacamole, sour cream and cheese was also perfectly cooked. Perfect amount of crunch on the ends and not too soft in the middles. Plenty of meat in the rolled tacos as well, which you could also taste well through all the toppings! We'll definitely be seeing you again soon Chuy's!!!

I ordered a California burrito and asked to swap in adobado pork. No hesitation, no side‑eye, just a nod and a "you got it." That alone puts them ahead of half the shops in the county. The burrito itself delivered. The adobado came through with that deep red glow and smoky tang, the kind of flavor that feels like it's been tended to, not rushed. Fold that into fries, cheese, and a tortilla doing quiet, reliable work, and you get a bite that hits all the right notes. Rich, bright, salty, satisfying. It's a simple thing done well, which is exactly what you want from a neighborhood taco shop. Chuy's isn't trying to reinvent the wheel. The service was nothing to praise but it was just a simple take my order and get me my food with a welcoming. Cost - The cost is a little bit less than average to average. The big thing for me is the burrito sizes are large. They're more long than bigger in width but they're filled with whatever you order. They also give you a free side of tortilla chips on the side which is a great addition. Food - I've tried a breakfast burrito, a steak and bacon burrito and the hot Cheeto burrito. The quality is great, meat is juicy and flavorful. The bacon came out crispy in my breakfast burrito but not too overcooked. The hot Cheetos burrito was done in a way where the chips don't get too soggy and this makes for a great experience. The side salsa bar has a great selection of salsa and toppings to add to your burrito at no additional cost and all have great flavors. The tortillas have a great taste and the burritos themselves are not super greasy on the outside but have plenty of sauce on the inside. Quick Summary - The food honestly just hits the spot and especially for the price and free chips with the selections at the salsa bar. The burrito was incredibly moist and flavorful, with shrimp cooked perfectly. We paired it with the green avocado salsa and the habanero pineapple salsa fresca--both delicious, with just the right amount of heat. The Jamaican drink was refreshing and not overly sweet, which I appreciated. The only letdown was the zanahorias; they were bland and tasted mostly like vinegar. Aside from that, I'd definitely come back.

I wanted to find a sit down spot that could deliver that same citrusy, flavor packed experience and this place was everything. We came in pretty close to closing without realizing, and I hate doing that because I know how it feels working in food service, but the staff still maintained such a great attitude. We were told to seat ourselves and while the inside was way too hot to sit comfortably, the outdoor patio was perfect. Our server brought out water and menus almost immediately and even after realizing they closed at 8pm, we never felt rushed at all. The menu is full of mariscos classics like ceviches, aguachiles, tostadas, and larger plates. Prices range from affordable to a little higher, but the portions definitely reflect that. My husband and I both got tostadas to start. I got the La Special and he got the aguachile tostada, and thinking the portions would be small, we also ordered carne asada fries and a California burrito... which we definitely didn't need... BUTT I am glad we got them because YUM! The tostadas were a 100/10. The portions alone felt more than an appetizer/snack. The La Special was loaded with raw shrimp, cooked shrimp, and octopus, all super fresh with great texture. I just wish there was a little more avocado. The aguachile had that perfect citrusy, spicy kick that makes it addicting. Incredible, and I mean it. Our server also brought out a variety of sauces like chipotle crema, green salsa, red salsa, and sour cream. I added some chipotle sauce to the carne asada fries, which already came with guac and sour cream, and it took it to another level. The portion was huge, especially compared to places charging $20+ for fries. These were around $15 and came with crispy fries, flavorful meat, and a good amount of cheese. The California burrito was $12.99 and really filling with carne asada, fries, and cheese. The tortilla was soft but held everything together well and it hit exactly how a California burrito should. I seriously left with no complaints. The service was amazing, the food exceeded expectations, and this is definitely going into our regular rotation.
