This was my third time attempting to go to the Boll Weevil restaurant. The other two times I heard it had recently changed a management (not sure) and both times the food was very overcooked, but I overlooked that thinking they probably had a new cook or something. My Granddaughter wanted to try it and we were close by so we came in. It's one of those 'seat yourself' situations, so we had to walk past five dirty (plates still on the tables) and we found one towards the back that we sat in. We sat there for 20 minutes while the waitresses walked past us, looked at our table, gave other people menus, but just totally ignored us the whole time. We finally ended up leaving because it was just ridiculous. I don't know what their issue was other than just being understaffed and could care less if someone walked out or not. Haven't been here in forever ... came in and the ambiance is cool country style . They have 50 cent games for kids to play ( be prepared to spend $10 on games ) Server was friendly and knowledgeable. The food was hot and yummy !! Fried zucchini was perfect , we also ordered a mushroom burger and it was delicious ! Big enough to share ! Ambiance has been upgraded! Service was good, but was not our usual waitress which is Kelly (she's awesome!) We ordered something to share because I was not hungry. It was a bacon cheeseburger and frings. We got our hamburger, but I wanted the frings with my meal! We were told they were "backed" up in the kitchen. I watched the window for 15 minutes. The entire time it was empty! NOT happy, this visit! We sent our frings back because my husband was done with his half of the hamburger (I didn't touch mine) We've been coming here for years. My favorite burger shop in Lakeside, CA - my second favorite burger shop overall. I love their ' 1/2 pound Steerburger and fries' lunch special from 12 to 4PM. I always get great service here. I make it a point to eat here at least monthly. Their booths are very comfy. read more

If you are old enough to remember the Boll Weevil commercials in the 80's, this is the restaurant they filmed them in. A San Diego institution back then, only a couple left. Opened because the owner of a high-priced steak house in the Midway area needed to do something with the aging steaks. So they ground them up and made steer burgers... Boll Weevil was born! But you gotta say the restaurants are old and dusty, but we love them. Best burgers, best onion rings, best good old fashion hamburger joint anywhere. read more

We love the long term team members and the upgrades you have made to the place, however, the cutting of the onions has to stop. No one wants to put little chunks of onion on their burger which will fall out and if they do, they can cut them up themselves. Ok, so this is not about our Server, Tracy, who was absolutely wonderful. This is about a crispy chicken sandwich and a couple of characters who identified themselves as the assistant manager and the Manager so let's call this the "Bridget and Shiloh" show. First my wife and I sat down, and decided on what we would eat, Paula ordered a crispy chicken sandwich and I ordered the Friday special double bacon cheese burger. When the food came, and rather promptly I might add, Tracy laid the chicken sandwich down in front of Paula, and whooooaaaa...that's it? A deep fried piece of chicken on a bun, no cheese? No sauce? No well actually no presentation at all. So yes, Paula was shocked and disappointed and for the first time ever, just told Tracy to take it away. Well I am sure Tracy had to tell some one and here is where Shiloh comes to the table and with out any niceties or introductions says, "why didn't you like your chicken sandwich?" Paula explained that it was unappealing, quite boring and simply wasn't what she expected and the menu description was underrated . Whereas Shiloh responded, "well next time ask", then she walked away. Assuming that Shiloh was some kind of manager, despite the fact that she was waiting tables as well, it was hard to identify that fact. When I approached her to tell her that the way in which she handled our interaction was absolutely unprofessional and at no time during the entire conversation did she 1. identify herself as a manager or 2. even offer the kindest " sorry you were not happy with your meal". She also told me that she approached us that way because she sensed an attitude on our part. Where does a Manager in the service industry ever tell a guest that they have an attitude? After that we decided to leave this place and never return. At the register, enter stage right, Bridget who tells us she is THE Manager! As we begin to tell her of our experience, she interrupts Paula and says " I have already heard Shilohs side" and yes I want to hear yours" well I'm here to tell you as a 45 year veteran of Restaurant Management, Bridget's mind was already set on what kind of "customers" we were. Again, at no time prior to Paula completely losing decorum, did this "Manager" ever apologise for anything. Rather, she sided with her employee and mimicked the same attitude displayed by her assistant 'Shiloh'. Two things happened here that we regret one Paula dropping the 'FBomb' which I have never seen her do and us ever stepping into this restaurant. Final parting shot...as I was leaving the restaurant, I looked at Bridget and said, "good luck with future business" which she most aptly replied to me in front of others " Sweetheart" don't worry WE have plenty of business!" My guess is that their financial numbers year over year are way down...but that's just a guess based on the way Management runs the place. read more

They have a cute little play area for kids that my son LOVED. But the restaurant didn't feel that clean to me and it had a slightly unpleasant odor. The food was REALLY greasy. I had a garlic cheese burger and the grease was dripping off with every bite. The fries were greasy too, but not as bad. Nothing was really seasoned. My son's burger was very bland. However the fried pickles were in spears and they were pretty darn good. The waitress I had was really kind when she checked on us. After our kids' baseball game, the team was excited to try Boll Weevil, but the experience was incredibly disappointing. As soon as we walked in, the woman at the front seemed flustered and visibly unhappy that we arrived. She immediately asked how many people were coming. We explained that we weren't sure yet and that a few more players might join us. Instead of working with us, she told us they were unable to provide service and insisted that more people would be coming in after us and that they "only had two cooks." When I asked if they were refusing service, she repeated--rather sharply--"we only have two cooks," as if that explained the attitude. If staffing really was the issue, a simple, polite explanation would have gone a long way: something like, "I'm so sorry, we're very short-staffed right now and won't be able to accommodate a large group today." Instead, the moment our large group walked in, we were met with rudeness and unprofessional customer service. Unfortunately, this experience left such a bad impression that we won't be returning. read more

I'm surprised do to the fact that even though the restaurant was very busy was clean, including the bathrooms. It's affordable place, free convenient parking. I had a mess up order that was messed up on a week and a half ago we had called the same day and had our name written down so they can remake it today. We all and a lady answered the phone around 315. Supposedly she was alone and the manager doesn't get there till 4 o'clock. She said her name wasn't ran down and I had asked them if there's any problems. How do you guys address it if you don't have the managers number, so she asked for my number and name and said she would call back 20 minutes later I call very rudely she says I told you a manager comes in later on. I'm the only one here very rude, then hangs up the phone abruptly I believe people who cannot take care of their customers and work alone should not be operating a business on their own as it will create tension with the client instead of making something right she's arguing on the phone and hanging up in my face as we have been coming here our whole lives and this was one of our favorite spots to get burgers read more

Total scam place in advertising ..Big sign lunch special $9.99/up with drink purchase.12-3 PM Walked in and waitress was very slow to give menu and I said I wanted to get one of those lunch specials and then order a drink,as required. One special..grill cheese for $9.99 and all the other lunch items were the price of a full dinner and no deal at all..$25/with drink and tip isnt a lunch deal. After sitting 10 minutes for that required soda and saw the (1) 9.99 grill cheese offer I cancelled the soda. Your price are more than similar places so no drink requirement should be required. I say you get far better value for your money at other known restraunts chains and would definetly not fall for Boll Weevil scam deal. The small plastic containers for peppers, pickles, onions have been replaced with very small ceramic dishes that contain very small portions. Slices of purple onion are no longer available, the patron now gets small pieces of onion that eventually fall out of the burger when eating. Pasticware has been removed from the table and must be requested. Small things that make Boll Weevil are now gone seemingly because someone in management felt the need to fix something that wasn't broken! Shame. read more

Stopped into this Boll Weevil for lunch with my son. I used to eat at the location that was on Miramar Road DECADES ago before it closed. I was in the area and thought it would be fun to try out the same place, different location. I found the atmosphere and food to be just what I remembered. I had a chocolate shake, fries, and the classic Steerburger. They bring you a tray of condiments when you first sit down - there is a container of yellow sauce they call "Steerburger sauce"..which to me is what makes Boll Weevil the place it is. It is a very unique sauce...if you eat a burger you really need to put this on it. I remembered the Miramar location had a giant turtle shell on the wall with menu items written on it. I have no idea if it's a real shell or just a replica..but I found one on the wall here just like I remembered at the Miramar location and snapped a pic. the shake was really good too. It was real ice cream, milk, and chocolate syrup..not something out of a machine. Boll Weevil is NOT a fancy restaurant. Yes, the seats have some rips, and it is dated looking inside.... But that is how it is supposed to be. They have video games, a juke box, and all the stuff you remember form the old burger joints. The Boll Weevil is NOT fancy like Burger Lounge or Islands... it is a simple burger joint with an older vibe. I love both of those places as well. But if you just want a basic burger with some killer secret sauce - and you don't mind the "basic" surroundings - it is a solid burger. I will be back next time I am in town. read more

We haven't been here in awhile - years actually - because the food quality had dropped so dramatically. I was skeptical, but willing to give them another try. I was pleasantly surprised. The decor is the same as always, but the beer menu has improved with newer craft beers as well as your old mega-breweries. The best thing is they're back to their delicious burgers and onion rings! Everything was cooked as requested and arrived to the table nice and hot. The service was friendly, courteous and prompt.
