The Brigantine used to be a favorite spot but some things have gone down. We had dinner at the Brigantine in Del Mar w/6 people. Not one person enjoyed their meal. Lobster tacos-horrible, Seabass w/scallops not good. Seabass was so dry & scallops were raw. We had oysters and 2 people got sick later that night. Just a total disappointment. I've been for happy hour & that's great. The house salad is amazing & so is the clam chowder. The service is subpar. The ambiance is great! read more

To begin, the food quality is what brought this rating down to a 3. The location, decor, service, view, and cleanliness all are 5's - but the food is a 2 or 3 at best. I had the macadamia crusted mahi and it tasted like, and looked like, a frozen filet that was used. The rest of the food was the same quality, and very disappointing. If the prices were lower, than the food quality would not have bothered me so much. Unfortunately, you pay great food prices for very average food. I've never been to Brigantine before, and after holding onto a gift card for a couple of years my husband and I decided to finally give it a go for our anniversary. He'd been there several times over the year but only for Happy Hour, which I've heard good things about. When we arrived for our reservation we parked across the street (meter parking), or there was also an option for valet parking ($7). Kyle was our server. He greeted us and got our drinks going while we took a moment to decide on food. Our dirty martinis were pretty good. We ordered a BLT wedge salad split, and some bread was brought to the table as well. Kyle gave us a run-down of the specials and I opted for the Surf and Turf special, while my husband ordered the macadamia crusted mahi mahi. My first impressions of our food was that the plating was a little underwhelming (see my photo of the skimpy asparagus stalks laid out like sad little green crayons), but everything looked tasty overall. After digging in, sadly we learned that looks can be deceiving. My husband enjoyed the taste/seasoning of his mahi but we both agreed that it was terribly dry, overcooked and chewy. On my plate, the mashed potatoes, asparagus and seasoning of the filet was lovely, but the lobster was lukewarm, a bit fishier tasting than I was accustomed to and the melted butter was just that - butter that resembled olive oil with zero garlic flavor to complement the lobster. The final nail in the coffin was that although I had ordered my filet medium, it came out rare (see photo). I ate from one edge in, but stopped when I made it about 1/4 to 1/3 of the way because I just couldn't stomach the deep red center. When Kyle had a chance to come check in on us, I expressed that I absolutely was not looking for any kind of discount or free meal, but just wanted the chef to be aware of my filet being super undercooked. He acknowledged that it was definitely not cooked correctly and offered to have it thrown back on the grill, but by that point it had been probably over 20 minutes since I'd stopped eating and I didn't have the desire to eat any more. He understood and then brought us over a dessert menu, and we ended our meal with a mud pie. When our check came, Kyle did in fact add a generous discount despite our protests (and of course, we tipped on the pre-discount total to thank Kyle for his service and attentiveness, as the food quality obviously had no reflection on him). I guess I just don't understand the hype for Brigantine. Ours was seemingly just one underwhelming experience in a sea of positive ones, so perhaps this was just an "off" night for them. Such a great experience! We dined here on a Saturday for the races and sat up in the corner of indoor area. We had a party of 8 and one server. We made a reservation in advance for a table indoors and NOT near children. We were originally seated on the outdoor patio on the sun next to a large family dining for brunch. Luckily the moved us indoors and were able to accommodate. Overall the food was great and service was an 8/10. It was a busy day and we were a large party. Drinks took a little longer but nothing to discount the experience. The salmon tacos were amazing as well as the chowder. Everyone loved their entrees. Happy Hour after a workout at the gym is a thing right?? My bestie and I went here after the Chuze Body Pump class with Michael (so good!) and it was Wednesday which meant half off bottles of wine! I will start by noting how spectacular the view was! Seeing the Pacific as well as the race track. A very beautiful touch to see the sunset as trains pass by. Unfortunately, the service was not so beautiful. I have never had a dine-in experience where we were asked to sit ourselves. Service was slow but average. I had gotten the burger which I felt was kind of thrown together and looked sloppy. I ordered it medium well; however, was way too cooked. It came with a side of truffle fires which were okay. A special place in Yelp Hades for restaurants that don't respond to polite critiques ( on their contact us site) from customers. Unusually slow and uninspired service. Server disappeared for long periods of time ( perhaps too many tables to cover?), wasn't at all friendly, and made me resent leaving a tip ( as he hovered over us with the mobile credit card machine). No one checked to see if our food was ok, water refill took 10 min, and we had to get up and ask for the check to be delivered. Food ( lobster tempura tacos w fries) was adequate but nothing special. It's a popular spot for sure but as a local, I'll doubt I'll be back. Businesses should review and respond to comments sent to their "contact us" web sites. Really our food here was two stars at best but the review would've gotten five if we were based on server alone. Our server was Tate and he was amazing. He was a gregarious and funny and needled us and just the right way. Super attentive and didn't forget anything that we asked him for. We were large table with many children and I thought he just did a great job. I would have him as my server and any restaurant and be super happy. And it's not his fault the food isn't great. We got a surf and turf that cost $125 as a special. The steak was so over cooked it look like it came from McDonald's and The lobster was pretty much flavorless and chewy. I got the chicken Cordon Bleu which is a very cool thing to have on in modern menu and one of my favorites. My first couple of bites were pretty on impressive though when she got to the mix it was tasty. It has a blue cheese inside so that was different and I like blue cheese. But my potatoes were frozen pretty much. Tape did bring me new potatoes but it took a little bit obviously in by then I was almost done with my chicken itself. Clam chowder is pretty much our favorite thing to eat at seafood restaurants and this clam chowder is a little on the watery side and also tastes like bacon. Which I do not like. As for the consistency my kid literally drank it through a straw. M We had spent the day at the races so we were hungry and ate all of our food but overall would definitely not eat a dinner here again. I've been to the bar before and had some oysters or cocktails and that has been fine but a $600 dinner? No thank you. For $600 I can think of 10 restaurants in Delmar that are heads and shoulders above the food here. But... I would move the server to all of them because he was awesome. read more

Go for the view, not the food. Mandatory valet fee for any restaurant parking. Food: Food was a hit or miss at best. Starting with the best: the calamari was tender and cooked perfectly. The pacific oysters were nothing crazy but good. The Mahi was okay but accompanying veggies were overdone and very difficult to chew through. The surf n turf special was $125 and wasn't exactly up to par. The lobster was tough and asparagus was tough. The ribeye was much more well done than medium rare that we asked for. Ambiance: The scenery was on point. The restaurant has a great overlook of the racetracks and the open view was beautiful. The sky is always great. Service: Our waiter Connor was wonderful and great job w app recommendations. He checked up on us and had great knowledge of the menu. Parking: Other than VERY limited street parking amidst fast paced traffic, you must pay a valet fee for any parking near the restaurant ground. Overall: Although the restaurant isn't bad, there are offerings in the Del Mar area for a much better experience. I don't think I will return to this Brigantine location. read more

This restaurant is outstanding. Perfect service, perfect food...just a truly lovely experience all around. They know what they are doing and I couldnt find a single fault in anything. I don't say that often. We came for dinner Saturday evening before going to Beyond Van Gogh at the fairgrounds, which ended up being a perfect choice since its right around the corner. The efficiency was unbelievable and we were never waiting too long for anything. In fact, everything came out lightning fast. It could have helped that we came for a 5:15pm reservation but still...top notch. Drinks: I am always drawn to jalapeno margartinas so i got the cucumber jalapeno on the menu. I will say it is a pass. I couldnt really taste any of the flavors (nope not even spiciness!) and it is half the size of a regular margarita (which did taste much better from sampling). For 2nd drink I got a moscow mule and it was very well-made. Im particular on that drink and a lot of places dont do it well, but it was excellent here. Food: Shared the octopus app (w/ Crispy chickpea, Bilbao chorizo, charred kale, tomato & pickled red onion with Romesco sauce) and I got the swordfish entree with risotto and broccolini- dining companion got the blackened salmon. Everything was divine and the presentation was wonderful. How do they get these beautiful, perfectly executed meals out so quickly? I was in awe of how timely everything came. I'm such a sucker for swordfish and it was perfect. Sampled the salmon and it had that great "seasonal" taste of fall/winter. Slight sweetness of the complimenting butternut squash puree and all the ingredients worked wonderfully. If you like salmon you will love this entree. Seafood truly shines here. The octopus was very good but perhaps *slightly* tougher than the perfect cook and I wasnt a huge fan of the chickpeas in it that were a tad hard. The pieces of Bilbao chorizo was really wonderful. Overall it was a very good starter and made a beautiful photo. Excellent presentation. Fresh bread on request -- the dark bread was tasty, the white, not so much. Service: Our server (Vito) was awesome and super attentive. He was very present throughout our stay and we really enjoyed talking to him. From ordering, receiving food, getting bill, being charged...everything was so timely and without any faults. I really gushed throughout our stay at what a perfect experience it was. As a Native San Diegan, this is an iconic location near the ocean that deserves more effort from the slow and negligent wait staff. The GM Joaquin was extremely professional and classy over the phone, and he accommodated our reservation request. Unfortunately, the service went downhill from there... When we arrived for our reservation, the Host Taiki seemed a little confused when seating us. He gave us 2 different types of menus and failed to explain what those 2 different menus represented. Although we were outside of the partition for the bar area, it required me to ask him three different times in three different ways before he said that one of the menus was the bar food menu, while the other menu was the traditional dinner menu. This is not rocket science, as the communication needs to be clearer. Also, he failed to notify the wait staff of our table number when he seated us. He is the first impression of the restaurant, and everything starts with him, so he clearly needs more training... When we sat down, we waited over 10 minutes, yet the server did not show up to our table to greet us, nor were we offered waters. I took the liberty to walk up to the bar and request 2 ice waters. Then, we waited an additional 10 minutes for our server Brooke S. to finally arrive. That's a total of 20 minutes just sitting there and staring out the window at the beach with no waters. The restaurant was not that busy, yet we were concerned that we may never see Brooke S. again, so we went ahead and ordered both our appetizers and our entrees when she finally arrived at our table. Unfortunately, our server Brooke S. failed to check on us, refill our waters, nor even thank us for coming at the end of the dinner after she almost dropped our boxes of food on the floor. We even had to take our dirty plates and place them in the service tub ourselves, which was only 2 feet from our table! She oddly took 2 dirty plates, but left 2 other dirty plates on the table when we needed to make room for our entrees... The service was absolutely atrocious! Brooke S. was lazy, unenergetic, and lacked basic manners with respect to not even thanking us at the end of the meal nor sending us on our way with a smile and genuine appreciation for our visit. In fact, one of the other servers was nicer to us as we exited the restaurant than our own server. This was basic protocol that any server should employ, but she wanted to do the bare minimum just to get by. She was not new to the service industry, rather she knew that she was being lazy and just doing a halfway job, because I can tell the difference... I grew up in the restaurant industry, and my family owned Italian restaurants all over San Diego. This was a Denny's type of service at a sophisticated restaurant that is has a minimum of a $100 per ticket price point! Now on to the food... The food was actually delicious. From the Brig Classic Calamari to the Spinach Salad to the entrees, the food here is special. We had the Sonoran Swordfish Tacos and the Macadamia Crusted Mahi Mahi. Although the Swordfish was blackened on both sides (I prefer cooking slow & low), it tasted good. The ranch-based crema was outstanding! However, the portion sizes of the coleslaw and chips were too small. They were more like samples than entree portions... The Mahi Mahi was perfectly crusted and seasoned, and the polenta and butter-based reduction was the perfect accoutrement to a great dish. We finished off the meal with the decadent Mud Pie for dessert. The restaurant has beautiful ocean views and excellent fare by the Chefs in the back of the house. However, our server Brooke S. needs a reminder that "Alright y'all" doesn't cut it here in Southern California at the end of the meal, and especially in my hometown. You need to step it up in these parts cowgirl, otherwise the competition will send you packing back to the South in a Texas hot second. read more

Oysters rock was VERY good. Lots of cheese, lots of toppings that add a lot. Depending on who you ask, the amount of accouterments might detract or mask the oysters themselves. Not a problem for me. I forgot to ask where the oysters were from unfortunately. The calamari appetizer was a flat out disappointment. Small portion, and not what I was hoping for. The style of calamari was more of a "cafe style" calamari strip. I'm not describing it well, but it was like cafeteria calamari, not actual pieces of squid. Still enjoyed it though. The fish n chips were phenomenal! Loved the batter and the fish was fresh. Garlic fries were delicious. Beautiful take on a classic dish done right. The Louie seafood salad was utilitarian in nature. Crab meat seemed fresh, but the shrimp could have been snappier or fresher. Shrimp had a grayish hue to it as supposed to a deep red. Greens were fine. The crab cake sandwich was very good. Crab cake itself was fantastic. Great crab with a crispy coating that was delightful. The kettle chips were so fun and tasty. I was surprised by how satisfying the cole slaw was. I could not stop eating it and it was such a nice surprise addition. This was my favorite dish from our meal. Parking is $7 valet only unless you want to try your luck with the beach street parking. They do take reservations, and I might suggest making one to ensure a good table + view. This is a great date spot, so folks prepare accordingly. A great special occasion venue. I was looking for a place to stop for lunch on my drive home to Long Beach from San Diego. I had 3 hopes: 1) delicious seafood with a really good menu selection 2) close by the ocean, hopefully with a view, and 3) not too expensive (inflation is no joke). Brigantine granted all my wishes, like a magical genie! Lol. The crab cake sandwich was so delicious, as were the garlic parm truffle fries! There was a nice amount of crab--they didn't skimp--and the outside was lovely and crispy. The mustard aioli was also really good. It wasn't too crowded on a Monday at 1pm. My server, Jay, was friendly and chill, as was the server assistant dude. Wonderful service, ambiance and food. The outdoor seating was aesthetic. The only downside is there's no self-parking. You must pay the $7 for valet. The food is excellent. They gave us two loaves of bread as starters and we finished the whole thing while waiting for our oysters and entrees. The crab and fish salad was healthy and surprisingly filling. If you have any cravings for fried food, you can't go wrong with the fish and chips. The fish was perfectly fried and the fries were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. Each Brigantine has its own character. This time we visited the one in Del Mar. we started with the calamari. We'd had it downtown and lived it. Happy to say that it was every bit as good as downtown. It was soft and had a great breadcrumb coating. For the entrees we had the tuna and the pork chop. The tuna was served rare and was perfectly seared. The pork chop was tasty but a tad over cooked. Pork is one of those dishes that need to be cooked enough but crosses the line to overcooked quickly. It was good, but not excellent. The cinnamon apple crumble was good. My husband was disappointed that he had to settle for regular coffee. I would have thought that an upscale restaurant would have espresso and/or cappuccino. The other issue was a very boisterous large party. While they were eating it was fine. Otherwise, people were out of their seat visiting people, clogging the aisles and making too much noise without regard to the other diners. We would return again, but will be more careful when making the reservation to check and see if there are any large, celebratory events at the same time. read more

Came here for late night drinks, desserts and snacks. We were all dressed well, just coming from a church service. Service was great even with a table for 24. I was glad the server still served our group bread and butter! My friend had a filet with a wedge salad and his wife had shrimp. Other friends had salads and appetizers. I made a reservation for a party of 6 by calling the restaurant, as my party was too big to make reservations online. The process was simple. There is valet parking for $6 (not including tip), and paid street parking (2hrs roughly was $6.75). Parking was available on both sides of the restaurants, by the beach. My husband and I parked and walked up the hill to the restaurant. The view was nice, so we didn't mind getting in the extra steps. We arrived 10min early, and were told that we couldn't be seated until 5pm (our reservation time). We were then seated outside, but there were heat lamps. The service started great, but then as more people started arriving, the place got loud and the service became very slow and inattentive. But there were seriously 2 male servers... and they were trying really hard to find a balance to attend to that whole backside area, which consisted of quite a few tables. Food was brought out fairly quick though. The virgin piña colada was delicious! All the food tasted great, despite the halibut dish, which was very dry. The blackened salmon was delicious too. My brother-in-law said his swordfish entrée was delicious. Overall, good food, good ambiance if dining outdoors. Service was great initially, but started changing once things got busier. We recently dined here for happy hour on the patio with our dog. You can't beat the views and it's practically across the street from Del Mar Dog Beach. But the food...wow. Happy Hour prices are great. We had oysters, sliders and a surf and turf taco that was phenomenal. You can order that on the non happy hour menu and it's only $7 versus $6. Great tip if you aren't super hungry. And the margarita is huge and I think only $8. But besides the fact that they don't skimp on size or alcohol...the margarita is not overly sweet and delicious! We had a small meal here early one Saturday afternoon. We split the clam chowder, house salad and the sand dabs. The clam chowder had a nice flavor, but there were only a couple of clams in an entire bowl! We love the clam chowder at Broohy Brothers in Santa Barbara, which is chock full of clams, so in spite of the good taste, we were disappointed in the Brigantine's clam chowder. The salad was good. The sand dabs were a little fishy, which is unusual for this restaurant , and the kitchen was stingy with the lemony sauce which came under them. The risotto accompaniment was really good. read more

Brittany did a great job with our party of 13! Our glasses were never empty and she recommended some great dishes! I ordered the macadamia crusted mahi which was delicately prepared and fresh. It was over a bed of risotto and came with a side of carrot and green beans. We sat outside on the back patio which was well covered by umbrellas and spacious.
