Surprisingly there are few dinner options in the Stockade District on a summer Sunday night. One of those options is Brickmen's, but given the choice again, I'd prefer to go elsewhere. While the outdoor deck was nice, if not unpleasant and buggy on a sticky summer eve, we were largely ignored by the wait staff out there. It took a long time to get our server and every time we saw them again, it came with an apology even though it was not particularly busy that night. None of the food at the table was exceptional, especially for the price, and the Lollipop Style Chicken Wings in particular were disappointing in this regard. read more

Decided to try this place for a late lunch (or early dinner) and it was great. There were two of us and we both followed the waiter's recommendation for our main course. Tagliatelle Bolognese and Cobb Salad. They were honestly as delicious as they could be. SEAN, OUR WAITER, was truly WONDERFUL. Besides his informed approach to recommending our entrees, he was such a nice nice guy. He framed his personality with professionalism. He was attentive and not over-attentive. He was interested but not intrusive. In terms of conversation, he followed our lead and made the interactions smooth. It was 3:30 on a rainy Tuesday afternoon and the place was kinda slow. Often, that means service and food can be "not so great" in some restaurants. But, not here. Service and food were terrific, despite the fact that there were not many customers at that time. The dumplings were good but lot of short rib, kinda dry, needed some more sauce. Tops of dumplings end up being dry which is hard to avoid so annoying to eat. The roll was good def heavy. It has shrimp steak cream cheese all tempura fried with some sauce. Minimal shrimp/ steak. Mostly rice. Pretty big roll though. There is outdoor seating as well and am outdoor bar. Partly covered. Very nice vibes but it was too hot to sit outside. The indoor bar was nice and you could see into the open kitchen. The manager was walking around speaking. The Cloudy peach was really good and it comes with a bubble. The lavender lemonade was good (they were out of the lavender syrup at the time but I didn't mind). Made a reservation, arrived about 10 minutes early. We were quickly sat and provided water. Over 10 minutes of waiting for any other sort of acknowledgement of our presence we left. We aren't exactly hidden away either, we were seated right by the server workstation right next to the kitchen. Literally every employee walked by us many many times. Was looking forward to trying a few things off the menu, but I have found service is a great indicator of food quality. So we left, no seemed to care about that. Brickmen Kitchen & Bar is an incredible culinary experience. The menu is continental American Cuisine with an amazing eclectic flair. All the food was prepared impeccably. The presentation was mouth watering & enticed our taste buds. The presentation was "only surpassed" by the taste which was both delicious & delectable! The service was both gracious & efficient. The restaurant's decor is a testament to the work & dedication put into it's design & build out. Overall, "uptown Kingston" should be ecstatic to have such a beautiful family & dog friendly establishment. Our 100 lb. Bernese Mountain Dog, Millie, gives Brickmens "two paws up." Service was very good and attentive. Lively and helpful waitstaff were all great. We had the sea bass with an orange-based sauce which was way too overpowering on the slightly overcooked fish. The two sides were excellent and portions huge. The complimentary duck fat fries were interesting but despite being given a very large complimentary basket after seating we only ate a few. I don't know why either because they *sound* delicious. The fish was the only thing on the entree menu we both found interesting but we were both mildly disappointed. In hindsight I would have ordered the $125 seafood tower appetizer as dinner for both of us. I dk, maybe it was because neither of us were starving but we ate very little of what we ordered other than than the slightly dry fish. I don't think I'd go back, I'm afraid. Ambiance in the restaurant very different than the bar side which in retrospect might have made the experience a bit more fun for my birthday dinner out. read more

We ate at Brickmen last night and just read the scathing review in the Times Union. We couldn't disagree more. First, who cares what color the outside of the building looks like? The TU does. Who cares what color the tables are? The food was very good and certain things were excellent, including the Kobe Sliders, the Shrimp Tempura Roll and those complimentary Duck Fat Fries. I keep wanting to like this place more than I do, because the deck is lovely and the staff are very friendly, and the venue still has some of the Williamsburg-hipster vibe left over from the much-missed Boitson's that preceded it. But the food is very hit and miss and, when it misses, the quality is very, very poor. It's tricky to know what to order. I recommend the Brickmen Roll for all its indulgent, creamy crunchiness. But all the other "Asian" dishes, including the other rolls and the Asian Salad, are laughably lacking in any kind of genuine Asian flavors. And on the other hand, I had one of the best steaks of my life here the first time I went. My guess is the menu is just too all-over-the-place to allow for consistent quality, and they'd be better off sticking to a more limited flavor landscape. Plus, yes, it seems like a great idea to give people free fries before anything else, but they're fried in duck fat -- what if you're vegetarian? Or looking to have a light meal? read more

Outstanding new spot in the old Boitson's space. From the owner of Ole Savannah, the hand of an experienced operator shows. Great "choose your own adventure" menu vibe -- order delicious heavy apps like lollipop wings or sliders, well-composed salads that punch above their weight, raw bar items, sushi, steaks, pasta, sandwiches ... all under the same roof as a top flight cocktail program. Went for lunch -what a great find! The place is beautiful-sat at the bar but the hostess gave a tour. There's a full restaurant side, and an enclosed back space with a full bar & outside tables. All very tastefully done. The food was delicious. Had prime rib sandwich and the blackened chicken sandwiches; both with the side salad-all so very tasty. Come for the ambiance but not the food. The upstairs decor is beautiful. I loved the light fixtures and the awning that kept diners eating in the shade. It felt like a well decorated casual restaurant. We ordered multiple salads and appetizers. The walnut cranberry salad was really tasty, sweet and clean tasting. The focaccia margarita bread was good but, it had very little cheese and flavor on top. The bolognese was terribly bland and had a gritty unusual texture for pasta. The drinks were standard and the server never offered to get us new drinks after finishing them quickly. Overall disappointed and won't be back unless invited by friends. read more

I grew up in Kingston and have seen many restaurants occupy the spaces in uptown. Some were decent, some were fantastic and I miss them, some were so awful and didn't last long. I live out of state now and was "home" visiting my family. I went to Brickmen with my husband upon recommendation from my parents. It was one of the top five meals I have had in a restaurant. We were blown away and intend to dine there again on our next visit. The menu was fantastic and everything we are was phenomenal. It's just ok....When entering the restaurant, you walk directly into the bar area, but need to maneuver from the front to the back in order to meet the hostess and be seated. This is not immediately obvious, so we initially stood at the front for several minutes until I spotted a tiny hostess stand. This is directly next to the kitchen and the bathrooms, so my husband and I were awkwardly standing in the crossfire of a busy section of the restaurant while waiting to be seated. The menu offers no clear cuisine focus, but has a lot of interesting options, but be warned, little is offered for vegetarian or vegan diets-We were given an order of duck fat fries to start. They were tasty, well seasoned, but clearly not for all dietary needs. We ordered the short rib Thai dumplings, Ahi tuna and strip steak. They never served the dumplings, forgot them, but not charged for them. The ahi tuna was cooked well but served with an overly sweet ponzu sauce, the steak was cooked well, but way over salted. The waitstaff were friendly and attentive. You will be charged a surcharge if you use your credit card, which is not indicated on the original check. The Brickmans decor, hence its name, gives a nice nod to local history and industry, but otherwise has the feel of a restaurant one would see that is attached to a chain hotel. I hate to say it, overall, it's an elevated Applebees. Some are going to really enjoy this place, others not so much. read more

What a new classic in Kingston. We had the sushi tacos and lollipop chicken and the bloomin onion was not as good as Applebee's but still very recommended! Next time will get the cake pop dessert tower, but was too full to try this time. Great place to watch sports. read more
